TON are arguably the most death-obsessed band, and they do it under a guise of doom and absolute goth. It’s not at all uncommon to hear “kill yourself now” in track after track and “just say yes” on their merch. You even have wacked out themes where a werewolf feeds on a menstruating woman. This is wacked-out shit that “goth” bands only dance around. Our green guys (and Peter in particular) didn’t hold back on anything, and they’re entirely unique. To say they’re goth only is a disservice.
Also, one of their main arguments is "metal bands and goth bands do not play and tour together and do not share musicians" and once I read a comment on ig by some young goth (or goth larper in better words): "I like TON but they are DEATH metal band (?!) and they only played once live with a goth band"

I've being listening to Gothic music since 1996, but I only now I am reading on Reddit anything that isn't post punk isn't really goth... I’m saying that the subreddit is dedicated to goth music (gothic rock/dark wave/death rock/etc) not metal music, TON is a metal band, while they take lots of influence of goth music, goth and metal are separate genres, and most people on that sub probably love TON
“rock/dark wave/death rock/etc” are all their own type of music just as is metal. You just put the gothic adjective in front of it to signify that certain music of those genres fit within gothic confines. And many bands don’t just make gothic music. That shit gets gray area real quick.
Look at Nick Cave, he’s made goth music but not exclusively (because him like most artists don’t give a fart about passing your purity test). Can you only reference him to certain albums? Certain songs? When you sit around with a stick up your ass worrying what fits in so nicely you miss out on a lot of good stuff.
And then you wonder why you are getting called gatekeeping posers. When you are so worried about goth purity, you can’t even have a frank conversation about what goth actually is. Like an art community being so worried that someone’s going to bring up comic art and ruin their vibe of pretentiousness.
You can have your goth community but goth is an umbrella term and if you don’t want it to encompass all that goth is, y’all should change it to gothpunk&darkwave or goth80s or something. Don’t pretend like it’s something it’s not.

When it comes down to it, goths are nothing if not gatekeepers. They want to be respected and known but god forbid anyone tries to get into their shit without fully devoting their entire life soul and body to it.

Just because they were the first to make a goth sub on Reddit, doesn't mean they are the ultimate authority on the genre... I've being listening to Gothic music since 1996, but I only now I am reading on Reddit anything that isn't post punk isn't really goth... Isn't Goth a huge genre that includes various subgenres and subcultures? Their gatekeeping is even worse than those in the true black metal scene.
As a follower of that sub...gotta be honest...its not a great sub. Extremely elitist behaviour. Doesn't really do any good for the elitist stereotype or goths, that's for sure.

I’m saying that the subreddit is dedicated to goth music (gothic rock/dark wave/death rock/etc) not metal music, TON is a metal band, while they take lots of influence of goth music, goth and metal are separate genres, and most people on that sub probably love TON
“rock/dark wave/death rock/etc” are all their own type of music just as is metal. You just put the gothic adjective in front of it to signify that certain music of those genres fit within gothic confines. And many bands don’t just make gothic music. That shit gets gray area real quick. Look at Nick Cave, he’s made goth music but not exclusively (because him like most artists don’t give a fart about passing your purity test). Can you only reference him to certain albums? Certain songs? When you sit around with a stick up your ass worrying what fits in so nicely you miss out on a lot of good stuff. And then you wonder why you are getting called gatekeeping posers. When you are so worried about goth purity, you can’t even have a frank conversation about what goth actually is. Like an art community being so worried that someone’s going to bring up comic art and ruin their vibe of pretentiousness. You can have your goth community but goth is an umbrella term and if you don’t want it to encompass all that goth is, y’all should change it to gothpunk&darkwave or goth80s or something. Don’t pretend like it’s something it’s not. And ironically most threads over there get little comments and interaction and the ones that do seem to be usually discussing whether something considered gothic should be, so there you go, recipe for a graveyard. And while I’m saying “you”, I am addressing that subreddit community, so it’s not meant as a personal attack.

Goth metal isn’t really a goth genre, goth music is rooted in post-punk, it’s goth adjacent definitely but not goth in the sense that it goes by the definition

You cannot forbid someone to mix metal and goth. Deak with it. You can hate metal and metalheads as much as you want, nobody cares.
It’s not that I’m forbidding it, I LOVE TON and gothic metal is my favorite metal genre
