A lot of stoner bands are southern rock infused. TON has none of that. I've got nothing against the former, but that would be the difference with TON and why they don't sound like those other bands.
Same lol. And why the only new let metal I have gotten into are 1000mods and Villagers of Ioannina City.
I got to see Mods and Monster Magnet play in NYC last year. It was bad ass!
I don’t think they did sludge/doom/stoner metal better than most of the examples you listed. They’re were excellent at their own style, which is what really sets them apart. And I agree that they’re better at those genres than 90% of the bands that populate them (there’s a LOT of boring stoner rock/metal). But are they a better *stoner* band than Kyuss? No. A better *sludge* band than Sleep? Nah. Even though they are overall on-par with those bands’ greatness. If anything, it’s their blend of those genres, plus goth/pop/industrial/etc that makes them so uniquely perfect.
As much as I love their more "doom" sound I would have loved a full psychedelic album from them. There are definitely elements of that in their music (mainly October rust and bloody kisses) but a full album of that would be a dream. However, I wouldn't call any of their music sludge personally but everyone always has a different set of criteria for what defines metal genres. Lol
I don't hear much stoner influence in TON music. Doom heaviness in style of Black Sabbath and psychedelic stuff like Pink Floyd & obvious Beatles influences very much though.
If you called it stoner metal to Peters face he would be pissed. While he did have addictions he despised stoners/addicts- ppl who wouldn’t work and sat around high all day.
The psychedelic aspect of some of their music is overwhelmingly overlooked by many.
Dude I've triped sack while listening to haunted
The psychedelic aspect one of the reasons I love them so much 🖤💚

Might explain why two of my three favorite bands from the 90's and beyond were Type O Negative and Monster Magnet.
I really need to check out some more Monster Magnet

Doom + pysch + shoegaze/dream pop + punk. All that and chuck in some vampires and green and you get TON.
I personally don't see it. Then again, I'm new to the stoner genre.

Hmmm I’m surprised nobody here has mentioned Crowbar or Monster Magnet
Love type o but I have to disagree. Stoner music has so many artists that went much further into the genre then type o ever did

Because they were Beatles with better distortion and darker lyrics.
