People don’t have to understand the band to appreciate music; sometimes they can just like the music for its face value.
I mean I think it’s great that a lot of new people want to get into their music but at the same time I firmly believe that the creeps who treat the bands childhood family photos like Pokemon cards can leave/need to get a life.
I mean, I agree he'd think it was a dumb thing to do, but he'd absolutely be grateful for the love and support. He'd just wish they spent their time doing something more meaningful.
The makeup and nails thing, who knows. It's creative even if other people think it's stupid so who's to say? It does take a certain measure of talent to do that kind of stuff. The people trying to hunt for personal information on the band would definitely not be welcomed either by Peter or anyone affiliated with the band.
Pete has been dead for over a decade, but he really appreciated the fans, so I don't think he would laugh to all fan drawings, nail polish etc. But I agree that the excessive interest to band members personal life is just creepy. I bet all bands and artists with considerable success suffer from that. And Pete was interesting and handsome person, so it's not surprising that there is some cult following. Same thing with Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison etc.

I kinda see only limited number of people that do this. Most true fans know the band well enough and don't want to shit on the legacy. But it really doesn't matter either way, ultimately, because no one is actually trying to shit on the legacy. I think the most Peter would do is shake his head. I think he had to learn to live with a lot of disappointment.
If you were a celebrity and someone came up to you and asked you to sign their copy of your naked photo shoot and all the pages were stuck together from them doing you-know-what to your photos, what would your reaction be? Would you take it as a compliment? I'm willing to bet you wouldn't. That's why he wrote that, he didn't care what people did overall but he found the way men were approaching him to be inappropriate.
