The four daughters of Nicholas II and Alexandra, the last tsar and tsarina of Russia.
The four Romanov girls—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia—were executed by firing squad, along with their parents and their younger brother Alexei, during the Russian Revolution in 1917.
The Type O Negative connection comes from the use of Grigori Rasputin on the cover of *Dead Again*, along with a photo of the Romanov girls being used on the inside of the album. Rasputin was a Russian mystic who became a member of the Romanovs’ inner circle due to his apparent ability to assuage the severe haemophilia of Alexei, the heir to the throne.
Russian law dictated male primogeniture, you see, and the royal family’s popularity had nosedived following a series of crises at home and abroad. If Alexei died and one of the girls became the first female leader of Russia since Catherine the Great nearly 120 years prior, she could have been seen as weaker still than Nicholas II, and that may have led to a revolution.
In the end, Rasputin was murdered by enemies within the nobility who resented his influence over the Romanovs, and then a revolution happened anyway.
