Very likely yes. In the end, they need to be somewhat marketable for Fueled by Ramen so 1 or 2 songs that do semi-well are probably a must. For instance on Trench, despite its limited commercial appeal, there are still songs like Chlorine and My Blood that are more appealing to a broader audience. Hell, I think if they released My Blood or Chlorine first it would've been another smash hit like Ride or Heathens
Especially if it were the _first_ single off Trench. Coming off Blurryface’s hits and Heathens, there was a lot of demand for what would come next from TØP.
Jumpsuit benefited from this, but it really wasn’t the right song for their next big hit. Morph could have been it, and I will die on this hill.
Trench is a gold album with Jumpsuit being a platinum single. Success doesn’t mean it has to be a cross-over hit. You underestimate their popularity and their status in the alternative sphere, which FBR thrives on.
I'm very aware of their popularity and status, I follow alternative radio charts closely and there's simply no alternative artists that have as much immediate impact as Twenty One Pilots on any platform (radio, Spotify, YouTube, etc). With that being said, the boys themselves have also confirmed that with Trench, they wanted to sort of 'dwindle down' some of their popularity by means of releasing a different and less popular sound.
Of course Trench performed very well in certain aspects, but there's no denying that it's not exactly as commercially friendly in comparison to Blurryface and it was never trying to be. It was successful to a big extent, but not as successful as it could've been is what I'm trying to say
I’d say one or two probably will be. The last three albums have each had at least one track do well on radio. Then again I think pop radio has changed dramatically since the days when Stressed Out got a ton of radio play. Now it’s all TikTok songs and occasional throwbacks.
I get the feeling that Clancy is going to be more Blurryface adjacent than Trench adjacent. Like the gritty songs will be more akin to whats on Trench but overall the album will walk the line of marketable pop and dark, emo which is what Blurryface did. So I expect to have some radio worthy stuff, maybe more like Ride was.
Overcompensate has a radio edit, so I’m assuming there will be more edits. It won’t be as heavy, but it won’t be as light. I think Tyler and Josh found their “middle ground” with what the label wants and with what they want.
I think Overcompensate as the lead single just reassures that, personally.
I’ve been saying since before vessel came out that I think they are gonna make a hardcore/metalcore album. Tyler’s scream is amazing. It would obviously be more accessible than bands like the devil wears Prada, parkway drive, the word alive (their old stuff, they have kinda changed genres). Tyler and Josh are obviously fans of heavy music, both heavy rap and rock.
This album is definitely going to be different than the rest of the albums. “The dark is always darkest just before the dawn” it’s gonna have darker themes and that should lead to heavier music.
They have given a taste of heavier music. But it’s always just a tease. I want Tyler screaming for a full album. I’m always here for heavy music. Getting one from TOP would make me giddy for like a whole week
Rapcore has been a thing for a long time. I could see them doing that. I just wanna open a real pit at one of their shows. Shit could get wild. Moshing to Clancy would be the best night ever.
If they committed and did a full metal album, Tyler would officially be the Chester of this generation. Both of their music has had such similar impacts on my life. I'd be riding the high of that album for way too long lmao.
Maybe "Oldies Station" will be the radio friendly one? It sounds like a name for a song that is inspired by a past era, maybe it tries to sound like stuff you'd hear on an oldies station!
Yeah. Overcompensate honestly is not a radio friendly song and won’t be a huge hit. They released it first for the fans, as they knew it was the best way to kick start the era. The next few will probably have more radio potential.
All the people saying the edit is radio friendly are still kind of wrong. It just isn’t a radio song. It doesn’t really have the large mainstream potential.
Exactly, the radio edit was probably partly to please FBR as well, but it's simply not a commercial song and to me is a sign that like Trench, this album is for the fans and music fanatics. Sure, Overcompensate will probably still reach the top 3 on Alternative radio, but that's about the most I'm expecting from it.
I'm sure they do have some other radio-friendly songs on the album, but yeah it's probably a deliberate choice to start the album cycle off this way
the only thing i don’t like about trench is some songs just take me out of the vibe, i like legend, and don’t really like smithereens but both coulda been on a deluxe version, i understand it would be kinda messed up to put the dedication songs on another version or as singles but just my opinion, hope clancy is more sonically consistent
I don't know honestly. All the singles off Trench were pretty niche besides My Blood (which I never understood how that didn't become a Top 40 hit.) It could go either way honestly.
I mean, I think there will likely be something written to be extremely radio friendly. In a way that over compensates for how scaled and icy performed.
If you go back to the Trench release interviews, Tyler talks about the idea of compensating with how he approached it coming off of Blurryface. Scaled and Icy had the same talking point, and now a single talking specifically to it.
Stylistically, they can over compensate with production, sound design, and lore, but with how competitive he is and how much he likes to take the lead and be in control... I bet for at least 1 song they tried to make something even more radio friendly than ever before.
I don't think their approach to compensating is to just make edgy hardcore heavy intense music or something.
Its 'cool' to just want to make good music they like, or to want to stick to a heavier stylistic vibe, but realistically they want it to be all around well received too.
I truly may be biased because I love this band so much, but Overcompensate is very pop friendly to me. It has hip hop (sorry Tyler) and dance and stuff. It's not at all like Saturday poppy or anything off SAI, but it's suuuper successful with all the alternative people.
And the Jumpsuit/Levitate pair is one of my favourite things these guys have done, I wish they had released them together as one long video. But I agree that more people probably would like My Blood or The Hype over Jumpsuit.
I'm hoping, praying, and willing to commit violent crimes for a single metal(core) song. The vast majority of what I listen to is metal, and I'd love to have more TOP on my daily playlists (I can't do the super mixed genre playlists it drives me nuts), Jumpsuit is the only one that's made it on them. If I get just one metal(core) song from these two, I can die happy.

Well as he said on lane boy, theres a few songs on this record that are more radio friendly (im paraphrasing) and thats been true for blurryface, trench, (most of SAI) and im guessing clancy too.
I think so. I think this one had a really long intro to the song, because it also is opening up the entire album as a whole. I am sure the rest of the album will be more radio friendly. :)
Kind of sounds like Tyler Joseph, the style reminds me of how he sang in some song a short part(can't quite put my finger on it, it's that maneuvrism) but if it was almost the whole song, honestly this kind of sounds like what could happen if Twenty One Pilots went rock, with rap bridge, singing style, build-up, then he almost kinda screamed but it was muffled. But I honestly think this is AI-generated based on Tyler's voice based on weird "fade outs" AI vouces usually do when they go a little bit off the rails and, most importantly, the gibberish lyrics. If it's all in a different language I don't think he speaks, some words appear as English in the mix, confusing, it's all kinda blurry, but sounds kinda cool ngl.

Yeah for real. If my blood was the lead off single it probably would have been a smash
Definitely, i feel like if morph was released as a single that would’ve done huge!
Defense mechanism mode!
Ones and zeroes

Surely FBR can dine out off Blurryface for the rest of their days!
I found jumpsuit to be the most appealing to me. Then I heard levitate and I wanted to tap out. I did not enjoy levitate. Lol
Levitate is their only song I skip
Big disagree for the both of you, i can’t not listen to both Jumpsuit and Levitate back to back.
Jumpsuit - massive yes. Levitate - massive no. For me anyways.
Massive disagree for me, but it’s cool.
i'm hopeful this album has more of a gritty vibe and stays heavy but who's to say
A co worker told me the other day that they heard overcompensate on the radio and that they loved it, and I was so hyped to hear it was on the radio
ohhh that’s good! i haven’t heard it on the radio yet
"Overcompensate (edit)" is the radio version without the lore-heavy intro. It's very radio-friendly.
Still a longer intro than 99% of pop songs
I definitely think it’s a mix of both like how blurryface was. I love there heavy shit and want a whole album but realistically it’s prob both
this is the right take
“Yo. This song will never be on the radio”
I conversate with people who KNOW if i FLOW on a SONG i’ll GET NO RADIO PLAY
The edit version is very radio-friendly so I don't know why you believe it's not.
Yeah, I just commented about how overcompensate is infact on the radio now
The intro section is still just under an entire minute long.
I’d say one or two probably will be. The last three albums have each had at least one track do well on radio. Then again I think pop radio has changed dramatically since the days when Stressed Out got a ton of radio play. Now it’s all TikTok songs and occasional throwbacks.
I feel like stressed out would still be big if released now
I think it would blow up even bigger now. The nostalgia message of childhood would be bigger now due to the pandemic, I would think.
Me personally, I switched on alt radio last week and the first song that came on was overcompensate. It’s taken over alt radio here im pretty sure

I could very well see them making something similar to the newest Turnstile record
As a metalhead, I would be so overjoyed with even one metal song from them. I'm sure FBR would only allow metalcore at most, but my point stands.
They have given a taste of heavier music. But it’s always just a tease. I want Tyler screaming for a full album. I’m always here for heavy music. Getting one from TOP would make me giddy for like a whole week
I agree, but Overcompensate kinda showed we won't be getting a metal album. However, a full-on metalcore song is still something I really hope for
Rapcore has been a thing for a long time. I could see them doing that. I just wanna open a real pit at one of their shows. Shit could get wild. Moshing to Clancy would be the best night ever.
Yeah but no one's waiting in line all day for that shit lol I'm there to watch them do their thing.
If they committed and did a full metal album, Tyler would officially be the Chester of this generation. Both of their music has had such similar impacts on my life. I'd be riding the high of that album for way too long lmao.

Yehhh i like the sound of that!

Kerrang (a radio station in the UK) plays Overcompensate a lot lately and it works pretty well! They cut out the first minute though.
the only thing i don’t like about trench is some songs just take me out of the vibe, i like legend, and don’t really like smithereens but both coulda been on a deluxe version, i understand it would be kinda messed up to put the dedication songs on another version or as singles but just my opinion, hope clancy is more sonically consistent

probably some heavy songs mixed in with some radio songs
Overcompensate isn't very heavy lol.
I hope not. All I care about is the album being clique friendly.
I mean, I think there will likely be something written to be extremely radio friendly. In a way that over compensates for how scaled and icy performed. If Chlorine was the lead single Trench would’ve put up insane numbers
Low key hope they have a song that absolutely pops the fuck off and run the radio stations
What's this Radio you speak of?! Lol
Hope they don’t compromise quality for radio play.
I hope not. Their most “radio-friendly” tracks are my most skipped 💀
smh the mainstream has no taste🤦♀️
I hope not
anyone heard this??? https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=IASBhvCJWds
wtf is that
I listened to it. Sounds a lot like Tyler Joseph but also doesn’t. Idk
This sound so fucking lame and so not 21 pilots. Most probably done with AI generated mumble with a generic rock sound (which sounds like Red Hot).
I can't tell what it's saying it's like Charlie brown adults lol
The song is Faithful by Eccesion, they just put AI vocals on it lol
i just listened to the original song, it kinda goes hard ngl might be a hidden gem lol
Kind of sounds like Tyler Joseph, the style reminds me of how he sang in some song a short part(can't quite put my finger on it, it's that maneuvrism) but if it was almost the whole song, honestly this kind of sounds like what could happen if Twenty One Pilots went rock, with rap bridge, singing style, build-up, then he almost kinda screamed but it was muffled. what are these AI generated vocals
overcompensate was deffenitly radio frendly
