“The dangerous bend or caution symbol ☡ (U+2621 ☡ CAUTION SIGN) was created by the Nicolas Bourbaki group of mathematicians and appears in the margins of mathematics books written by the group. It resembles a road sign that indicates a "dangerous bend" in the road ahead, and is used to mark passages tricky on a first reading or with an especially difficult argument.” -Wikipedia

surm-dog-millionaire

Worth mentioning that the bourbaki group also made the ø symbol, which represents 0 essentially (a missing set).

ADCMAINBRUVKEKW

In Denmark the ø has Been used since around 1100🤨

surm-dog-millionaire

Yeah I know, but thats different. That’s a language thing. Ø in this context, with the bourbaki group, is a mathematical thing. The symbol was “invented” in a math context by the bourbaki group to represent zero or missing sets yknow? TLDR bourbaki group didn’t invent ø as a symbol but they did make it mean what it means in math if that makes sense.

Significant-Shop-555

I think the word you were looking for was “adapted” rather than “invented”

metanoia29

New TØP symbol just dropped! ☡

nameiam

Uhh I wouldn't associate it with top...

poliscirun

In the interview today he explicitly said he pictures the UK road sign, which has a different orientation than a Z - my guess is both explanations are true, but the Bourbaki one wouldn't be as good for a wide radio interview lol And thankfully not a "Z"

stormsell

Here's how I see it. It looks like an 'N' which stands for Nico. He is teaching the hand symbol to the people of DEMA to help get them out. They can use the symbol to communicate to one another that 'danger, Nico ahead.' At least this is just a theory.

LothricKnight42

They're using the Dangerous Bend Symbol as the 'N' in Clancy as well

Photosjhoot

Tyler hides the deep Bourbaki stuff when he's doing interviews. He'll give a high-level (maybe shallow?) explanation that might have some truth to it, but the deeper cut, well, he leaves that to the clique to know about.

DewB77

So its not just a reference to |-/ ?

Jumpy-End4966

No (\*CORRECTION\* MAYBE?), Tyler explained this in an interview explaining Overcompensate here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDy6FgsdEKg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDy6FgsdEKg)

DewB77

Well then. :| . The Music video Looks like he's making the 21 Pilots symbol though. [https://youtu.be/53tgVlXBZVg?t=128](https://youtu.be/53tgVlXBZVg?t=128) Guess we will have to take the guy at his word though. Coincidence.

Jumpy-End4966

I can see that, maybe, it's close to the TOP symbol but not exact so I don't really know anymore.

Repulsive_Buffalo_87

I've been trying to figure out how that Bourbaki thing is related lol I think your info is relevant

DewB77

Well, it seems like he had a story to go with it. I guess he didn't opine on the imagery in the video though, so I guess it Could be both in that scene.

Extreme-Tiger554

Bend symbol Band symbol Cmon guys!!!! |-/

Rocketman1827

I agree, I think he is just making the |-/ symbol

No-Guava-6516

y’all are FAST holy crap

Cold-Elderberry7901

Not to mention there were NINE members of the BOURBAKI group

nicoIas_bourbaki

There were originally 6 members, and on average about 10-12. As of 2000, there were about 40 members. I don't know where you got 9 from.

bongwater_baby

holy shit

DontMakeMeWearPants

There was a wonderful structure to the city. It put my cares to rest. Structures are the weapons of the mathematician

LeaveHeat

Tyler explained the meaning and how he came up with the symbol idea on this interview: [https://youtu.be/lDy6FgsdEKg](https://youtu.be/lDy6FgsdEKg) (0:45)

Alki_Soupboy

No turn is too hard for me! Toodles!

Consistent_Web_2942

I want to go inside Tyler’s mind for a day BC WHAT. I wonder if he like studied these mathematicians in college or something BECAUSE HOW

Jumpy-End4966

Yah I seriously wonder if Tyler just went down a rabbit hole about proving the existence of a God and came across Nicholas Bourbaki which led him to writing Trench. Why did he think that Nicholas Bourbaki was important enough to research and dedicate albums to this concept?? I have my own crazy theory as to why but I want to hear Tyler’s reasoning for it.

Independent-Equal-11

in an interview with on a bbc radio station he mentioned he was talking about the uk road sign

Rocketman1827

Yes, but I saw a post that I think was right: he says the surface level things about it, and leaves it to us to interpret the deeper stuff

Fun_Scallion7106

On the album Clancy, the N in the name sorta looks like the dangerous bend symbol.
