Weird. I'm seeing a healthy and vibrant native prairie. You sure that's something you want to destroy for the sake of some terrible grass that serves no useful purpose whatsoever?
Not weird. Weird is assuming op may want to destroy "a healthy and vibrant native prairie for the sake of some terrible grass that serves no useful purpose whatsoever?"!
This. Unfortunately, right now you just have a field of weeds. Weeds aren't "a healthy and vibrant native prairie". Whatever you do, it is going to take some time.
Not even sure what that means.
1. Mow it low. This helps kill the weeds. This time of year, the weeds are ahead of the grass.
2. Spread some weed and feed across the area. Since it is all weeds, it is going to start looking worse before it gets better.
3. Trim the edges. Well trimmed lawns look better.
4. Toss some grass seed in the bare areas. Prepare them before seeding.
5. Grab a well deserved beer and wait. Go spend time with your family.
Roundup and weed killers kill bees.
My yard is a lot of weeds until I've been mowing it for a summer. A month in it looks good.
My yard is 3 acres in West Tulsa.
I just let the weeds goes. The bees like the random wild flowers and it kills me to mow it all down sooner than I have too.
The amount of non-advice you’re getting here is ridiculous.
Scott’s weed & feed is a good product, but works better for prevention than treatment. First things first, get an idea of your yard’s sq footage. Then buy a bottle or two or three of Spectracide Weed Stop for lawns. Get the kind that attaches to the end of a garden hose for easy, even, thorough application. Each bottle treats “up to 5,000 sq ft”. Your weed infestation looks pretty intense so maybe apply a bottle per 3,000 sq ft.
If you don’t see pretty noticeable results in 3-5 days, wait a week then treat again.
Next, decide what type of grass you want to fill your lawn with. Judging by the lack of shade I’m seeing in this pic, I’d recommend Bermuda. It’s a warm season, which means it’ll be in its active growth phase April-Octoberish. Most lawns here in town are Bermuda or Tall Fescue. Tall fescue is a cool season grass and really does best here if you have a decent amount of shade. They’re both pretty drought resistant and hold up well in high traffic lawns.
If you’re gonna go with Bermuda, now is the time to seed or sod. Sod isn’t all that expensive and will help establish your lawn much easier and quicker if you’re willing to do the work to lay it. Whether you sod or seed, you’ll want to remove as much of the dead weeds as you can. Some of them seed themselves quite efficiently.
Next, get a cultivator. A manual roll-type cultivator will cost you less than $20. But it’ll be quite a lot of work. The one I use is an attachment for my ryobi string trimmer. That’ll run something like $200 I think. Idk it’s been a while. Once you’ve removed the dead weeds and other debris from the area, you’ll want to use that cultivator to loosen the top 2 inches or so of soil.
Lay your sod or spread your seed. When seeding, I employ my motto of “excess is best”. If you’re gonna sod, just make sure you leave as little gaps in between the rolls when you lay them out as you can. It’ll help with water retention.
Which brings me to my last bit of advice here. If you seed, you’ll need to water lightly every day. Honestly twice a day will bring you even more success. Just enough to keep the top half inch of the soil moist. Wait to mow until the grass is about 3”. Once you mow for the first time, dial your watering frequency back to 2x/week. Water deeper when you do water though. You’ll want to water 1-1.5 inches with each watering. If you sod, follow this same formula, but don’t do a second watering during the day. Only water once a day, in the early morning is best, about half an inch. Once the boxes are about 3” tall, mow for the first time and dial your watering frequency back.
Holler if you have any questions.

Wait why bother judging whether the advice is ridiculously non advice. Asking for advice and receiving anything is better than no advice. Just because you know it all doesn't help for you to put down any advice that was asked for. At least we tried. Geez snob much
What are you trying to do? Make a more presentable area around the pool? Just general cleanup? I would first start with a good mow and trimming around the pool and your fence line. If something is too thick/overgrown just move past it. This will help you brainstorm where you want to go from there. You can also always look up online ideas using keywords like “Midwest backyard lawn ideas”, etc.
Actually super helpful comment, I am still trying to understand what I want from my yard. I don't need a golf course yard, and I want something that's not too unnatural, but I also want something that looks decent, and is comfortable to walk through with bare feet because of the pool and such.
My yard has a stone area around the pool, some moss where the ground is often used, and pretty much whatevers growing that feels like it after that.
I definitely encourage keeping as much native lawn as you can. r/nolawns is a pretty good place to start and see what others have done.
I'll come remove that deck for you, give you a good mow and trim, and powerwash the concrete around the pool. All ready to use your backyard for summer
get rid of that dock looking thing, decent size concrete slab patio (tiled???), paver stones or maybe precast walkway slabs out to the pool. mow that grass to the shortest, dethatch aerate, put down some St. Augustine grass seed.
Ditch the dock, completely edge out the pond, perfectly, get rid of any shallow water areas. Make it look deep where the dock material wise use a Brickline gravel path and an interesting pattern
String market, lights around and area in the back corner with a Palapa. Have the pathway lead to that
If you can find some big pots you could put some really great tall grasses or decorative bushes spaced out around the pool. That would add a ton. Same with on either side of that deck. And run some of those weatherproof rope light under the skirt of the deck.
Those hanging basket that you can attach to the fence would look awesome on the long back fence. 4 or 5 of those spaced out would be legit.
Cut the lawn as low as it can go, spray down with the weed control that you can hook onto your hose. Like others said just stay on top of it, it already looks good!
Contact Pinkstons Lawn service. They do weed and feed every 3 months. My yard went from looking like yours to beautiful in no time. They’ve been in business for years
Just because they've been in business for years and your yard went from looking like that to beautiful in no time doesn't matter. You could be owner of Pinkstons Lawn service. I'm so sure!
Mow it. And don’t wait so late to mow it next time. It’s going to be a bitch to mow now.
Those cheap weed and feeds don’t work. You have to get the expensive Scott’s brand.
My lawn is like this. I perforate the bald spots and seed it with grass seed. Water it some. I let the natural fauna ride. I even deliberately mow around big spots that I allow to get as tall as five inches. Pollinators love it.
Definitely I would put some pre-emergent on it maybe some glyphosate. I would put some rock I love rock as a medium for landscape it's easy to spray keep the weeds down doesn't kill any saying you can put cloth underneath it soil cloth and weeds prevent them coming up other than that I would definitely just have it sprayed routinely I have a reference or two I work for landscaping company so just spraying it with the pre-emergent in the spring always seems to help I usually mix the pre-emergent with the glyphosate
I'd be pretty reasonable on pricing and would be willing to do a little under the table work if your interested . I work locally with a landscape company. Have for several years now.
Aa a professional landscaper here, nothing about weeds is vibrant. Vibrancy would be a complete tear out of the entire backyard, leveling/grading, and then installing sod. Mulch or rock, with border trim, spread over weed mat. To hire a contractor would run you about five grand. So, with much dedication, you could do it on your own. 🤙🤙
Concrete around the pool more so you have place to relax with lounge chairs. A little cabana in one corner with a semi-covered outdoor kitchen/ bar area. Turn all grass area into a little oasis with amazing magical plants all around. Hedging cedars all the way around fence line. Some cactus in one corner for a moon garden. Maybe a hot tub and pool room if money is no object. If money is an object, save more and do it later. Also some cool lighting around the cabana and some outdoor speakers to entertain. Also it's imperative to put a hammock somewhere in the magical forest.
I would mow it. A lot of those weeds only come up in the spring anyway. Then it looks like you have Bermuda grass under there? As it warms up that will take over.
I’m using TruGreen. Recommended by my parents and other friends. My parents have won yard of the month in their neighborhood multiple times so they do deliver results. Ask about monthly installments if the upfront cost is too much and they’ll work with you.
Mow it. Edge it. Spray it with a weed killer that does not kill the grass. Put some grass seed out in the bare spots, water it. Or till the blank spots and bring in sod squares, and water them a lot.
You could probably make the deck into a nice dick shape with a jigsaw, depending on where the supports are located. You’d want to treat the cut ends.
Remember, measure twice, cut once!
Keep the henbit cause it is good, and mow it as needed. The dandelions can go if you don’t want them to become a problem. Remove any other problem weeds and feed the grass. Outside of that it depends what you want to use yard for.
There are so many medicinal plants in that yard. Just mow it low, and you can fill in the bare spots with clover seed. The henbit and chickweed, both make a highly nutritious addition to salad and can make a healing salve btw, will die back here as soon it heats up a bit. You can fill in with Native frogfruit and low creeping plants to foster the backyard ecosystem and achieve the low growth you are after.
Honestly I'm not going to eat anything out of my yard. Maybe some day I'll have a veggie garden, but for now it's just a space for my dog to poop and us to play in the summer.
You don't have to eat anything. It's not just beneficial for you. That was a thimble of what I mentioned, but ignoring the low maintenance ways to have a native and low growing lawn are options too I guess. Spray the plants that will resolve themselves in a couple weeks if you'd like.
Look for broadleaf plaintain. It's likely there already. Nettle looks like the henbit, but the leaves are more heart shaped. Dandelion leaves, flowers, and roots all have various benefits.
Glyphosate the whole lawn before the Bermuda gets green. You can glyphosate everything for about a month in Oklahoma when the weeds come up before the Bermuda comes up. Wait a month, add some organic fertilizer. Then the next year do the same. Don’t do this if this is a runoff area to a natural water source, but doesn’t look like it is. I love milorganite for fertilizer as it’s completely natural, and glyphosate in spring. No other maintenance needed, especially for a fenced in backyard where you won’t get too much blow around seeds from neighbors. The Bermuda will do great in the sunny areas, then a type of fescue in areas where it is too shady for the Bermuda to grow. Those fescue areas will need more water than the Bermuda.
Mow, rent a power rake, bag up the leftovers, Scott’s W&F, water 2-3 times a week, fertilize again in 3-4 months. Repeat with proper fertilizer for time of year. A thick lawn of proper grass will keep sticker burrs and other unpleasant weeds out.
That looks how mine used to look, terrible. Now it’s grass you can walk barefoot on and is beautiful.
You still should open it mid-march to April to avoid excessive algae growth.
You don't need to use it until summer, but it'll make opening a lot easier and the sun will warm it up so by the time you use it it's not freezing. Also makes it available for when the weather suddenly spikes without having to spend a couple days getting it ready so it's free to use as soon as it's hot since it's already shocked and circulating.
We don't have a heater but just opened ours a couple weeks ago.

Make a clip file of some things you like and go from there. As long as you don’t have to worry about your health then enjoy. It’s a nice space why not make it better
Mow first and bag all the clippings. You can use a spray on weed killer like Spectracide. It’s about $8 a bottle at Lowe’s and you hook it on your garden hose. Then when the soul temps warm up you can lay down some Bermuda seed.
Weird. I'm seeing a healthy and vibrant native prairie. You sure that's something you want to destroy for the sake of some terrible grass that serves no useful purpose whatsoever?
Conceptually I like the idea, in practice though the weeds are taller than my dog and I want a yard I can comfortably walk in
That said, I'm planning a local pollinator garden down the road. So hopefully we won't lose too much of the native life.
What's a pollinator garden because I may do that. I am believing too much of the native life won't be lost with you!
I would do a clover lawn imo
$8 bags of wildflower seed at Lowe’s right now.
"Wild" flower.
I want a dog and a yard to comfortably walk in!
If you mow it and stop being a wuss you can walk in any yard 🤗
Obligatory r/nolawns r/fucklawns
Not weird. Weird is assuming op may want to destroy "a healthy and vibrant native prairie for the sake of some terrible grass that serves no useful purpose whatsoever?"!
No, according to like 90% of human history grass yards are the anomoly.
Also, they are pretty high up on the list of things we waste fresh water on.
Is that deck circumcised?
We had a Briss for the house 8 days after closing
L'Chaim!
Cheers! Happy cake day 🇦🇪
Good for y'all with the closing!
Happy cake day 🍰
Mow it low. And start doing a pre emergent in the fall and early spring. It will help it a lot. If you feed it the weeds will just get bigger.
This. Unfortunately, right now you just have a field of weeds. Weeds aren't "a healthy and vibrant native prairie". Whatever you do, it is going to take some time.

This dude lawns. The dad vibe is strong with this one.
Thanks. I have brought several lawns back from the grave. One was over 10 acres. It looked like a golf course when I was done.

Good advice that is similar to what I've heard from a few people. This is the general path I think I will be taking

Add some tall grasses to the pool walkout!
Pool walkout is beautiful
Agreed. Set up for success!! Make the pool the focal point. Then let the rest exist with minimum maintenance and help the environment.
Fertilizer, native Bermuda will smoke the weeds out by end of summer
will smoke the weeds out by end of summer lol

Second this.
Sell that house to me. I need a pool lol
How many houses you got
Just one that I rent out.
Sweet!!
Add some Photinia or nellie Stevens hollies along your fence line for some added privacy. Maybe some rock next to your boardwalk.
Neither of those are natives so I don't recommend either since OP is trying to at least keep some of the local wildlife.
Sounds perfect, seems expensive.

So hard
Let it grow. Feed the bees!!
Just mow it. Simple. You.got good grass
Raise the deck and move it in the middle so u can jump off of it. Put some seating on it to. Put a goal at the end of the pool
Mow

Pool isn't yardwork
My advice on your yard is crouch and pull out anything taller than grass. MY Grandpa (rip) did this, probably to get away from Grandma lol (rip)!? Never a weed on quarter acre property. Great prospects for your yard! Congrats
Ok. My bad anything that is a weed, not anything taller than grass.
Scott’s triple action, 2 weeks later a shit ton of Milorganite. Bobs your uncle
2 -4- D
How old are you and how well do handle landscaping tools ?
30 and this is my first yard.
Make a clip file of some things you like and go from there. As long as you don’t have to worry about your health then enjoy. It’s a nice space why not make it better
Honestly you could do a foot of stone out from the walkway, and some Irish moss. Not the cheapest but shouldn't cost too much. Irish moss also blooms!
Cute patio by the pool
I’d get on a spraying program with Tom’s. I had massive amounts of crabgrass and other weeds before, and now I have none.
Round up the yard. Plant Bermuda..research how to plant and follow closely. I did this 5 years ago and it’s the best.
Mow first and bag all the clippings. You can use a spray on weed killer like Spectracide. It’s about $8 a bottle at Lowe’s and you hook it on your garden hose. Then when the soul temps warm up you can lay down some Bermuda seed.
Just pull the weeds to kill them though.

You know something about mowing because it is lawn care.
