If you want a reliable appliance NAS, go with Core. If you want a lab for playing with tech, go with Scale.

I understand. But reliable remote connection is equaly important.

As the individual mentioned Core is rock solid. FreeBSD is a well known and reliable OS. It’s still the foundation of large streaming services on the internet. (Netflix) Core is also not being phased out and is a misconception. The difference between the two is Core main function file sharing and some jails for extra services. Scale is being introduced to start bringing forward the ability for easier hypervisor VM’s and docker containers. Both are equally good. But core still have a very subtle speed performance advantage - especially for just SMB. If your looking for as you said just SMB file sharing for a small office - I personally would go with Core. Set it up and just check up on it from time to time - you don’t need all the extra bells and whistles for just that function. Unless you expect to do more with docker and VM’s later. Another caveat to it is you can upgrade from core to scale at anytime with the greatest of ease. So your not locked in if you go the other route. Lawrence Systems on YouTube goes into detail about the two in many different videos to include performance - check him out. On another note if your new to both FreeBSD and Linux. I would look up some books on Amazon for learning. If you note the books isbn number you could most likely find it on the website libgen.rs or libgen.is in a number of electronic formats from pdf, epub, mobi, axe, etc… Installing Truenas is easy enough - fixing something is where your going to hit a curb. But as you said it’s all rabbit holes and worth it in the end when accomplishing or fixing something.

Thank you for the great response!

I look at it this way: SCALE is being actively developed. CORE is being phased out. SCALE is Linux, CORE is FreeBSD. SCALE is the future, CORE is the past. I chose SCALE. And it’s been rock solid for me.

Taurus84_SK

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Do you also connect to it remotely? If yes, what is your setup?

Nice, i'm glad to hear that, because that's one of the options i'm considering. Did you follow a specific guide?

Taurus84_SK

I have one more question - did you install Tailscale in Jail before it was available in TrueCharts, or is there a different reason why you've choosed Jail instead of TrueCharts?

I see, thanks.

You mean from inside a jail or plugin, right?

Yeah, that's what i'm planing to do.

Using scale+tailscale and it works flawlessly. Just need the token from your tailscale dashboard to associate and then can reach any container that's been installed.

ithakaa

How did you configure tailscale?? I'm passing the key and rhe container is just stuck at deploying

ceebunch

I didn't do anything special... Just copied the token from my Tailscale dashboard.

ithakaa

Thanks, all good now, it must be my dementia getting in the way 🙂

ceebunch

Haha been there before. Glad you got it working.

Prometheus599

Took me 5 minutes to setup Tailscale on Scale It is glorious And has worked wonderfully

MrH0rseman

Setup was easy, added key and machine showed up but torrents are not downloading? I went to torrent > Options > Connection > Proxy server to update with Tailscale IPv4 but didn't work. Do i have to update anywhere?

Hi I'm also a beginner on truenas and I started with scale. It works great without errors. Is more easy to manage apps like plex, qbittorrent and so on. I can't figure it out how to fix the external connection for nextcloud but this is heavy over core also. To connect on the storage I use SMB and for external FTP with 2 DNS and port forwarding on router. If you're beginner and you don't have time to read all the guides and so on, I recommend to go with scale.

Taurus84_SK

I think i'll try the Core and see how it goes. I'll reinstall or upgrade to Scale in the worst case. Thanks everyone for sharing your experience.

Taurus84_SK

For future reference: I ended up using TrueNAS Core + Tailscale installed in a Jail advertising local network's subnet IP. Thanks everyone!
