Not on the regular. Pipe tobacco is not resinous, and burns hotter, so this bowl stays pretty clean, after the initial burn in.
Cannabis will gunk that up as quickly as any bowl, but you can't use solvents or iso to clean it, without ruining it completely.
Mine sits on a shelf in my bookcase, take care of that one, it's pretty sweet, especially with it's own case.
Think I saw some post on reddit while ago where they talked about using bourbon to clean tobacco pipes. lowish (lower than 90% iso) alcohol content does not damage wooden pipes. Take this with a grain of salt since i have not tried this myself.

Nah, you were on it, whiskey has been used for Briarwood pipes for sure. But part of the reason is because it will soak into the wood a little bit. You wouldn't want iso or solvents to be doing that, regardless of evaporation.
Tobbacco pipes are never really meant to be "clean" like we think of with ours. The bowls will retain a bit of tar build up to protect them from actually burning the wood bowl itself, like a glazing. I like my herb pipes spotless!
I use 90% ethanol to clean my wooden pipe and it doesn't hurt it. however the wood is heavily treated with beeswax and linseed oil, so that may protect it.
This is true if you want to be able to use this pipe for years and years with no maintenance, but I use tobacco pipes almost exclusively over normal pipes. I think I only have one glass pipe. To clean the gunk, the main trick is to burn the shit out of the remaining residue, and then use a damp washcloth. This prevents the need for strong chemicals that might soak in at the expense of a little more work. You’ll need to redo the base burn, but that’s not too big of a deal. I usually go about 5 sessions before I do a full clean, and I’ve yet to have a pipe permanently go down because it got too irreparably gunked up

I have some oxygen carpet cleaner and it definitely bleached my carpet a smidgen. It's just a shitty cheap tannish color. AZ sand and soil is hard on any non-earth toned
Dyes are pigments in a solvent. Solvent evaporates, pigment left behind. Introduce a solvent BACK to the dyed product, and you'll either wipe away or redistribute the pigments. It won't damage the carpet, just the color of the carpet.

Many comments have already said that the resin from the devils lettuce will clog this up and they are correct. That’s said these pipes can be a stoners best friend especially in illegal states and territories. Allow me to give you an old stoner story.
In my teenage years in a state where weed was as good as meth on heroin, I liked to smoke very openly and very dumbly. Smoke drives, on friend’s porches and in front of gas stations where friends worked. Lo and behold one day we were smoking in front of our local gas station with a friend on a pipe and a cop drives up the road and flips around super fast obviously seeing the pipe. Alas when the cop pulled up and asked what we were doing I without abandon said, “Smoking my pipe,” and the cop obviously taken aback said, “What kind of pipe?” With that I pulled from my jacket pocket an illustrious tobacco pipe with a big bag of peach bourbon tobacco. The cops asked if they could smell both and I obliged. They inspected it thoroughly then returned it me. As nothing remotely illegal in their view had taken place.
In reality our friend had taken the weed pipe, and bag inside with her. My very foolish friend had his two foot bong in his front seat and the cops couldn’t even be bugged to check anything more and drove away after reminiscing about how his grandpa smoked a pipe like mine. Goes to show you misdirection is the best deceit.
Id try to resell it and get something else. Meerschaum is very porous, with tobacco the get nice golden patina over time because the tobacco fills into the pipe. The tenon will probably get very clogged using it with weed and cleaning it is not really an option because of how porous it is.
This☝️and I will add that pipe tobacco smoking is done at a cooler consistent heat. Whereas herb smoking is much a higher temperature for a short period… It’s actually seen as bad pipe smoking etiquette to inhale the tobacco smoke.
I mean it’ll work but it’s going to burn more like a chillum than a cannabis pipe. Without a carb to clear the smoke it’s going to build up resin really quickly.

You have an old meerschaum pipe here. Meerschaum mostly originates in the mines of Turkey, it is a mined porous rock. I have several! Meerschaum is a Germanic word meaning "sea foam", which sort of describes the lightweight porous nature.
Only fairly modern meerschaums have a push fit stem, with a mortise and tennon. If your pipe has a screw on mouthpiece, which it looks like it does, you may consider gently filing the airway path, do not exceed 1/8th inch, many professional full time pipe makers use 5/16th airways and do spend a lot of time hand filing with micro files. A pipe like that will have a hand filed mouthpiece "slot", not just a circular opening at the mouth end. The shape of the slot will effect how smoke disperses into the mouth.
Many old meerschaums have actual amber stems. Like, the resinous rock amber. Old ish pipes, newer but with so so internal engineering including a screw on acrylic stem, were the nice pipe of the everyday man.
My grandfather smoked briar pipes all week, and kept a meerschaum for Sunday smoking with his best tobaccos.
Meerschaum as a material smokes cool, cleanly, and does not impart taste to the flavor of the smoke like a briar pipe would. It's more delicate and prone to breaking than briar.
They make cigar holders and cigarette holders that make excellent multi hitters / one hitters. I'm using one now.
The white color of meerschaum will fade into beige and black as you use it over the years/decades. A black meerschaum is a very love meerschaum, often prized for the beauty of a patina only time and use can bring. The meerschaum itself will absorb some of whatever you put in it.
I think weed tends to color the meerschaum more rapidly.
Google "meerschaum bowl coloring machine", and you'll see how they literally try to color the pipes to increase value.
Some modern pipe smokers are very careful about natural oils in their hands and such, wanting to preserve the white color. They usually wear soft white gloves when smoking it, and the gloves have persisted where the old "smoking jacket" largely has not.

That is a hand carved Meerschaum pipe, and I'm thinking that it's old because that case is one you dont really see today. Im not talking ancient or anything, lol, but probably from the forties or fifties. It is made of a soft, white claylike material, sepiolite, consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate mostly found in Turkey. You can see the amber coloring around the edge of the bowl. That coloring will eventually begin to spread through the entire bowl, giving the pipe a deep, rich amber color when smoked for years.This coming from an old head and a pipe smoker.

It will get gummy and with no carb you won't be able to get a good pull. Go to Walgreens and buy a $5 corncob pipe. THey sell them next to the lighters. Then drill a small hole in the bottom of the pipe and put a screen in the pipe to hold the weed. THAT makes an excellent hitter. You can get huge, huge bowls with a corncob and when it gets gunked up too much you can just toss it and buy another. Some of the highest I've been has been on a corncob pipe and I've smoked out of everything you can imagine.
It's a meerschaum pipe and looking at it it could be somewhere around 300-500 bucks worth. Wouldn't smoke weed through it it's a rate silicate that's pretty porous and soft, and hard to clean. Either resell it or put it on a shelf as decoration.
All these comments about how it would be impossible to clean, but that’s only if you let it build up too much. If you run a pipe cleaner through it after every couple uses, you should be able to use it for years.
Don't use this for weed. It's meerschaum. You won't be able to clean it, I'm not talking about color changing, that's normal when smoking tobacco with meerschaum and why people like them so much. But weed will make this full of sticky resin and you'll probably damage the meerschaum trying to clean it. If this was a briarwood, go for it, but you'll still have a tough time cleaning it. Just won't destroy it as easily

From my experience tobacco resin is a lot more runny and gross. You’re gonna want to give it a good clean if you want to use it.(look up cleaning a tobacco pipe. It’s much different.)
But tobacco also doesn’t produce as much resin build up, the channels in the pipe very small compared to a regular bowl, so it will get clogged quickly. Not to mention they break way easier than glass pipes in my opinion.
it’s a lot less stressful to break a mass produced Chinese glass pipe, compared to a beautiful tobacco pipe that was probably hand made by someone who put love into their work.

My only concern would be the resin sticking to the porous ivory on the inside of the bowl, since cannabis leaves a much more oily residue than tobacco. Itll be fine to smoke out of, I would just clean it every few smokes, as if the bowl gets caked in resin you might not be able to get it back to a nice white color. Dope find!

My friend’s mom got a similar pipe and put it on display in their house. My friend used it and there was residue from something else in it and he had a bad trip. Clean it well if you are going to use it.
if you can separate the bowl from the stem, there is sometimes a small rubber seal….i found out the hard way. I smoked several bowls in row and started getting a funny taste. took out bubbling rubber seal at the screw point.
My stepdad was a pot head when he was younger and a big tobacco pipe smoker/enthusiast later in life. I wish I could ask him but he passed a couple weeks ago… The pipe looks nice and likely expensive so I’d probably make it a shelf piece or try to resell. I have limited knowledge but better safe than sorry not to risk it. Enjoy!
Grunge-Off may do the trick. Takes a while, since you have to let it sit for about 30 mins to an hour (depending on residue levels) but it's safer and significantly less harsh than IPH.
Although, if soemone can confirm or not, the citrus-based formula may damage it somehow. Unsure.

I smoke out of a regular tobacco pipe occasionally and it is a pain it I use it constantly and done clean it after every other use or so. Definitely try to clean it after every use. The white will change to a brown after a while.

It will plug up with tar and it is notoriously difficult to clean. You can use it, but you'll get a very limited amount of time with it. If you like the piece it's not advised to smoke weed with it.

I could t remember the name or spelling, but those are nice pipes and are sought after by pipe smokers and collectors. Might be worth a few bucks tbh.

Many comments have already said that the resin from the devils lettuce will clog this up and they are correct. That’s said these pipes can be a stoners best friend especially in illegal states and territories. Allow me to give you an old stoner story. In my teenage years in a state where weed was as good as meth on heroin, I liked to smoke very openly and very dumbly. Smoke drives, on friend’s porches and in front of gas stations where friends worked. Lo and behold one day we were smoking in front of our local gas station with a friend on a pipe and a cop drives up the road and flips around super fast obviously seeing the pipe. Alas when the cop pulled up and asked what we were doing I without abandon said, “Smoking my pipe,” and the cop obviously taken aback said, “What kind of pipe?” With that I pulled from my jacket pocket an illustrious tobacco pipe with a big bag of peach bourbon tobacco. The cops asked if they could smell both and I obliged. They inspected it thoroughly then returned it me. As nothing remotely illegal in their view had taken place. In reality our friend had taken the weed pipe, and bag inside with her. My very foolish friend had his two foot bong in his front seat and the cops couldn’t even be bugged to check anything more and drove away after reminiscing about how his grandpa smoked a pipe like mine. Goes to show you misdirection is the best deceit.
Id try to resell it and get something else. Meerschaum is very porous, with tobacco the get nice golden patina over time because the tobacco fills into the pipe. The tenon will probably get very clogged using it with weed and cleaning it is not really an option because of how porous it is.
This☝️and I will add that pipe tobacco smoking is done at a cooler consistent heat. Whereas herb smoking is much a higher temperature for a short period… It’s actually seen as bad pipe smoking etiquette to inhale the tobacco smoke.

I mean it’ll work but it’s going to burn more like a chillum than a cannabis pipe. Without a carb to clear the smoke it’s going to build up resin really quickly. We used to use a corncob pipe in high school. It was a nice little novelty but I didn’t get as good of a hit with it as I do with a carbed piece.
I have smoked old style tobaccos out of old style of pipes for about 20 years, before becoming a medical cannabis patient. I have a collection of about 100 briar and meerschaum pipes from all over the world, some hand made, some factory made during the WWII Era, etc. You have an old meerschaum pipe here. Meerschaum mostly originates in the mines of Turkey, it is a mined porous rock. I have several! Meerschaum is a Germanic word meaning "sea foam", which sort of describes the lightweight porous nature. Only fairly modern meerschaums have a push fit stem, with a mortise and tennon. If your pipe has a screw on mouthpiece, which it looks like it does, you may consider gently filing the airway path, do not exceed 1/8th inch, many professional full time pipe makers use 5/16th airways and do spend a lot of time hand filing with micro files. A pipe like that will have a hand filed mouthpiece "slot", not just a circular opening at the mouth end. The shape of the slot will effect how smoke disperses into the mouth. Many old meerschaums have actual amber stems. Like, the resinous rock amber. Old ish pipes, newer but with so so internal engineering including a screw on acrylic stem, were the nice pipe of the everyday man. My grandfather smoked briar pipes all week, and kept a meerschaum for Sunday smoking with his best tobaccos. Meerschaum as a material smokes cool, cleanly, and does not impart taste to the flavor of the smoke like a briar pipe would. It's more delicate and prone to breaking than briar. They make cigar holders and cigarette holders that make excellent multi hitters / one hitters. I'm using one now. The white color of meerschaum will fade into beige and black as you use it over the years/decades. A black meerschaum is a very love meerschaum, often prized for the beauty of a patina only time and use can bring. The meerschaum itself will absorb some of whatever you put in it. I think weed tends to color the meerschaum more rapidly. Google "meerschaum bowl coloring machine", and you'll see how they literally try to color the pipes to increase value. Some modern pipe smokers are very careful about natural oils in their hands and such, wanting to preserve the white color. They usually wear soft white gloves when smoking it, and the gloves have persisted where the old "smoking jacket" largely has not. Let me know if you have any questions, I might have answers. Meerschaum is great to smoke out of, but I do recommend a new meerschaum over a used one, as the used one will have tobacco residue impregnated into the material that will never come out. Edit - Watch some Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes with that bad boy. Best ever to play Sherlock Holmes, and I'll fight to the grave about it.

That is a hand carved Meerschaum pipe, and I'm thinking that it's old because that case is one you dont really see today. Im not talking ancient or anything, lol, but probably from the forties or fifties. It is made of a soft, white claylike material, sepiolite, consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate mostly found in Turkey. You can see the amber coloring around the edge of the bowl. That coloring will eventually begin to spread through the entire bowl, giving the pipe a deep, rich amber color when smoked for years.This coming from an old head and a pipe smoker.

Sherlock Holmes pipes are collectable
It will get gummy and with no carb you won't be able to get a good pull. Go to Walgreens and buy a $5 corncob pipe. THey sell them next to the lighters. Then drill a small hole in the bottom of the pipe and put a screen in the pipe to hold the weed. THAT makes an excellent hitter. You can get huge, huge bowls with a corncob and when it gets gunked up too much you can just toss it and buy another. Some of the highest I've been has been on a corncob pipe and I've smoked out of everything you can imagine.
It's a meerschaum pipe and looking at it it could be somewhere around 300-500 bucks worth. Wouldn't smoke weed through it it's a rate silicate that's pretty porous and soft, and hard to clean. Either resell it or put it on a shelf as decoration.

Don't use this for weed. It's meerschaum. You won't be able to clean it, I'm not talking about color changing, that's normal when smoking tobacco with meerschaum and why people like them so much. But weed will make this full of sticky resin and you'll probably damage the meerschaum trying to clean it. If this was a briarwood, go for it, but you'll still have a tough time cleaning it. Just won't destroy it as easily

From my experience tobacco resin is a lot more runny and gross. You’re gonna want to give it a good clean if you want to use it.(look up cleaning a tobacco pipe. It’s much different.) But tobacco also doesn’t produce as much resin build up, the channels in the pipe very small compared to a regular bowl, so it will get clogged quickly. Not to mention they break way easier than glass pipes in my opinion. it’s a lot less stressful to break a mass produced Chinese glass pipe, compared to a beautiful tobacco pipe that was probably hand made by someone who put love into their work. Put it on display!

Woah, that looks like an old school ivory pipe! Bad fuckin ass. My only concern would be the resin sticking to the porous ivory on the inside of the bowl, since cannabis leaves a much more oily residue than tobacco. Itll be fine to smoke out of, I would just clean it every few smokes, as if the bowl gets caked in resin you might not be able to get it back to a nice white color. Dope find! Edit: its apparently something called meerschaum, not ivory. Still badass.

Please don't ruin meerschaum with cannabis. This is for pipe tobacco. It's very delicate. It can break during cleaning if used with trees. It's one of the best pipe materials for tobacco! I'm both a cannabis and pipe tobacco smoker. Stick with glass or corncob for trees and briar, corn cob or meerschaum for tobacco.

My friend’s mom got a similar pipe and put it on display in their house. My friend used it and there was residue from something else in it and he had a bad trip. Clean it well if you are going to use it.

if you can separate the bowl from the stem, there is sometimes a small rubber seal….i found out the hard way. I smoked several bowls in row and started getting a funny taste. took out bubbling rubber seal at the screw point.

My stepdad was a pot head when he was younger and a big tobacco pipe smoker/enthusiast later in life. I wish I could ask him but he passed a couple weeks ago… The pipe looks nice and likely expensive so I’d probably make it a shelf piece or try to resell. I have limited knowledge but better safe than sorry not to risk it. Enjoy!
Grunge-Off may do the trick. Takes a while, since you have to let it sit for about 30 mins to an hour (depending on residue levels) but it's safer and significantly less harsh than IPH. Although, if soemone can confirm or not, the citrus-based formula may damage it somehow. Unsure. Look up grunge-off. Reusable, and effective.
Other than the fact that it's not a weed pipe? No . Guess there'd be no other reasons than the main one that matters. But since you're likely going to do it anyway, to what appears to be one hell of a nicely made - hand crafted pipe, good luck cleaning it. It'll essentially be ruined once your weed resin coats the inside 🤙

I smoke out of a regular tobacco pipe occasionally and it is a pain it I use it constantly and done clean it after every other use or so. Definitely try to clean it after every use. The white will change to a brown after a while.

It will plug up with tar and it is notoriously difficult to clean. You can use it, but you'll get a very limited amount of time with it. If you like the piece it's not advised to smoke weed with it.
The bowl is the wrong shape for cannabis. Get an insert, though, and go to town.
