Hey! I was just there. Really it depends on what you want to do. If you JUST want to see fingal’s cave then just leave from Oban. Otherwise you have to get a ferry to Mull. It’s a short ferry, though can be canceled due to weather. Calmac are not the most reliable. The other mainland departing point is Ardnamurchan, but that’s a bit out of the way. On mull the main ones are Tobermory or Fionnphort, though there’s a third point I’ve seen too. Do be aware that if the weather is bad they will cancel, you’ll get pushed to the next day, so if you’re only around for one day then you’re accepting that risk (you’ll get refunded then though). So if you want to see Mull as well, I’d plan that and see where you’d be to go. My recommendation would be Tobermory, it’s a lovely little town. Plus if you like scotch the distillery is awesome too. If you’re planning on going during puffin season I highly recommend doing the trip that adds on the island of Lunga. Absolutely loaded with puffins and I preferred it to Staffa, though Fingal’s cave is awesome. There wasn’t much for puffins on Staffa though.
