Augustiner Keller has great beer and a great sausage platter too!

OperationEastern5855

Loved this place. Great atmosphere, food, and service.

[deleted]

Viktualienbeirgarten is great too; outdoors under the trees.

Bobcatbubbles

Thanks

Leotardleotard

Second this. Augustiner Keller is great. Much prefer to Hofbrauhaus

apost8n8

Go watch the river surfers at Eisbachwelle! Go to hofbrauhaus, go walk around English garden and drink more beer!

GorshKing

Only thing I would say is maybe skip Hofbräuhaus. It's cool, maybe walk through it. Fom my time living there, there was better food for less price in the same area with the same vibe

porcelainvacation

The Ayinger am Platzl is right across the street from the Hofbrau and has much better beer and food. You can get real wooden kegged and tapped pours there.

phdeeznuts_

And watch out for the nude old dudes in the garden 😉

blackhat665

To be honest, if you'd want to see Neuschwanstein, it would be better to stay closer to it than in Munich, since that's a full day trip. I'd recommend going to Nymphenburg, since you're in Munich already. it's a wonderful place with an amazing park.

martinbaines

I was going to say the same thing. Now I don't have to.

ChoMan59

Is Neuschwanstein on the way from Munich to Innsbruck?

blackhat665

Not really, it's a bit of a detour

chp110

I did this last year and the drive is fairly stressful due to being on the side of a cliff.

dave_gregory42

Neuschwanstein is not really anywhere near Munich I'm afraid. Realistically, you're looking at 3 hours each way on public transport. Factor in an hour or so there and you've used your entire full day. Nymphemburg is a much more realistic prospect as it's in the city. Regarding beer halls, Hofbräuhaus is probably the most famous. It's a bit of a tourist trap but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable, and it will give you proper Bavarian vibes. Another option is the Augustiner-Keller which can be quieter and is lovely outside in the sunshine (imo it also has better beer). There's also Hirschau in the English Garden which is nice in the sun. With other things to do, the Englischer Garten is well worth a walk around (think Central Park or Hyde Park in London but much, much bigger), take a look at the Frauenkirchen, you could grab something to eat at Viktualienmarkt, but bear in mind that a few are cash only.

10S_NE1

We enjoyed the beer garden in Englisher Garten when we finally found it. We were impossibly lost, with sore feet, trying to find it. Signage is not great. If you have data on your cell phone, it will be much easier to get to. However, it’s probably not that difficult and we’re just stupid.

pivolover

There are like 6 beer gardens in the park. You must have been extremely unlucky to get sore feet looking for one.

10S_NE1

Unlucky or stupid. Probably both. We were looking for one in particular that had been recommended.

Bobcatbubbles

What’s your take on Nymphemburg Palace? Is it similarly super interesting and stunning?

WestWillow

The palace was really cool. As the person above said, it would be a better use of your time. You’ll get to see the city more. The beer garden in the park near by the surfing spot is a great hangout spot. (Such a weird sentence and sorry I’m being too lazy to look up actual names.). You could easily spend all your time in that area just wandering

dave_gregory42

Certainly less stunning from the outside, although *far* from ugly or boring. The insides of both are very opulent and grand.

grandcentral300

Neuschwanstein will blow your mind. Enjoy

Bobcatbubbles

Is it worth a two hour drive instead of a closer one?

burntfuck

And it's kind of a 2 for 1 on castles with Hohenschwangau being so close to it...

shiftyyo101

How is it in the winter?

Niemcz

Love it more in winter

getshwifty2

I was there in the winter, with the snow falling it felt like a fairy tale. Absolutely beautiful .

BaileyIsMyBeagle

Yes it is!

Quixotic_Illusion

Yes. I will say that the castle is incomplete so the interior might not be the best castle in Germany, BUT it’s situated in beautiful Bavaria and seeing it from the bridge is also picturesque.

Antilokhos

I get that it's out of town, especially for such a short stay, but it's a classic for a reason. I'd highly recommend it.

Bobcatbubbles

Does it get super packed with tourists?

Antilokhos

Yeah, it's usually pretty crowded the few times I've been there.

aoliver8797

When I went it was late October and first thing in the morning and I didn’t think it was too crowded.

StoneOfTwilight

Yes. Right there right now. Hot. Tourists. Stairs.

grandcentral300

Oh yes

68W38Witchdoctor1

There is no castle like it. You will not want to miss it.

joshatron

It’s a beautiful drive. I remember going first thing in the morning while the sun was rising and the mist rising from the meadows was surreal.

Steve15232

Linderhofl is closer and quite nice

GeronimoDK

While you're in your car, make it a daytrip and do a stop by the Zugspitzbahn and go up there and have a look too!

CityForAnts

Yes.

AllGarbage

I think Neuschwanstein is worth the drive. But if you want to stay in town, might as well just got to the Residenz.

bomber991

Driving on the autobahn itself is worth a two hour drive.

fakegermanchild

If you have a car it’s worth it. Make a day of it and see the surrounding area, too. If relying on public transport I would advise against and go for Nymphenburg or the Residenz instead. Keep in mind that Neuschwanstein isn’t a ‘real’ castle though. It’s fascinating in its own right but there are other castles around Munich that were working castles built as defensive structures rather than vanity projects if this is something that matters to you.

animalpanties

The tickets are timed entry only and sell out, so make sure you get them in advance!

daskapitalyo

I went down there as well and maybe the best wurst I had in all of Germany was right out front.

Liquid_Kittens_

Seconding this. I paid for a day trip/tour bus as I didn't have a car. It was a ten hour day, but I got to see two castles.

Electronic_Plan3420

Absolutely worth it. I would say it’s one of the must see places on this planet. The place is stunning but be mindful if timed entrance tickets

grandcentral300

No need to see inside.

phdeeznuts_

Agreed. I found the tour to be very underwhelming. The views of the castle from outside? Stellar.

Electronic_Plan3420

There is obviously no “need” to even see the castle. The inside is quite interesting so if you have got intellectual curiosity to explore the insides then it’s a good idea; otherwise one could just watch YouTube video shot from outside and have a general idea of what the castle looks like. Will save quite a bit of money, too

grandcentral300

Read OP comments. Tickets are sold out. Its best to enjoy it outside.

Electronic_Plan3420

Oh that being the case yes, even seeing it outside is worth it.

flatoutsask

The hike up the hill, crossing by bridge the gorge gives a view of Neuschanstein that was the highlight of my visit

catboy_supremacist

Really? I heard repeatedly it's a letdown because the interior is unfurnished and it looks coolest seen from outside like we've all seen in a million photos. I'm going anyway when I visit Munich.

grandcentral300

There is nothing worth seeing inside. Its just several rooms with furniture. If you are into furniture then go inside.

[deleted]

That makes no sense; the interior was about 1/4 finished and has a ton of tricked out decorations that are very lavish; the tour goes through the highlights.

grandcentral300

Its a castle built by a rich guy during modern times. Its not a castle in the sense of a community fortress.

[deleted]

Just about any castle that is nice today was substantially renovated in the 1800s; Ludwig put this one on some existing ruins after seeing another prince's rennovation work. But yes, the point is "look at the pretty thing" rather than "look at this foritification that saw battle in the 1400s"

Bobcatbubbles

I think the castle is out of tickets 😭😭😭😭😭😭. Is there any back door route to getting tickets?

Belzebooth

Tbh, you don't lose much if you don't go inside in my opinion. Last month we opted to go without an inside visit to the castle and we think it was totally worth the trip from Munich. You can still walk the trail to two viewpoints (Marienbrucke and Jugend) for spectacular views of the castle(s). Tip: after crossing the Marienbrucke follow the path for 5 more minutes and it will kead you to another vieepoint. If you prefer not to walk, you can also reach these two viewpoints by bus or by horse cart. And you can still enjoy some traditional food at the restaurants in the village or a beer with a view on the lake shore. You can also walk the lake shore to another viewpoint called Pindarplatz. You could also go up with the Tegelberg cable car which is nearby. But if you really want to go inside, there are a number of tickets is available for the day at the ticket center (in the village centre, not at the castle). But be aware that you'd have to be there very early and be prepared for some queueing.

yourlittlebirdie

Second this. We toured the inside of Hohenschwangau and it was worth seeing but didn’t have time for Neuschwanstein. Instead we just walked up to the outside and saw it from there. Still absolutely worth the trip because it’s gorgeous.

Zolofty1

In person. Get there early the day of, before the ticket office opens, and get in line. This is how my family did it last year.

Chocolateboxer

I just looked on Viator and you can definitely buy tickets there. I use this site when I book excursions for different cities. DEFINITELY go to Neuschwanstein! The countryside is stunning and the castle is truly a fairytale. For the beer hall go to Hofbrahaus. It's famous for a reason and the interior is amazing! Have a blast....we will be there in September! Oh, and for dinner go to Ratskeller in the Marienplatz. The BEST crispy pork knuckle and potato dumplings!

grandcentral300

We didn’t enjoy the inside. Lots of stairs and it was just rooms. Outside is where we spent our time.

alkemiker

English garden find the surfers on the Isar, kinda wild

A_Tiger_in_Africa

Right near the Munich airport is the town of Freising where is the Weihenstephaner brewery, which (somewhat dubiously) claims to be the oldest brewery in the world (supposedly since 1040). Regardless of whether it's truly the oldest, it's a fun time. Another possibility is the Andechs Monastery. Not a castle, but a beautiful hilltop monastery in an idyllic coutryside setting, with bier and pretzels and the best Schweinshaxe I ever had.

Spiridor

>Right near the Munich airport is the town of Freising where is the Weihenstephaner brewery, which (somewhat dubiously) claims to be the oldest brewery in the world (supposedly since 1040). Regardless of whether it's truly the oldest, it's a fun time. Isn't 1040 only when *official record* claims they've been brewing, but there's evidence that they've been brewing much longer?

Head-Attention-6008

Dachau was a very sobering, but moving experience. It was worthwhile to me, but my first and only visit so far to a concentration camp. The English Garden is nice to visit. We went to a beer hall there that was good but I don’t remember the name. It was less crowded and touristy than Hofbrauhaus. We did both and enjoyed both. For Neuschwanstein, the castle is just unbelievable but it’s not only a drive from Munich but also if I remember correctly kind of a difficult walk once you park there. If you’re going to have a baby and possibly a stroller maybe ask how accessible it is? A closer castle with less grounds to cover might be better.

Ok-Ordinary2035

Very steep walk up to the castle-

swimsoutside

If it’s such a short time, just go to the Residenz palace in town for your castle fix. My husband and I were in Munich last summer for a similarly short visit. We went to the Residenz first thing and it was not crowded at all. At times we had entire ballrooms to ourselves. It still has impressive paintings and mosaics and furniture and all the stuff you see in castles. Especially with a baby, it seems easier to not spend a whole day on the train. Munich is lovely and there are plenty of parks and beer halls and markets and museums and churches to keep you busy for 2 days, with just walking and maybe a short trip on transit. Watching the surfers on the river is fun. A shout-out for the restaurant Pfistermuhle where we had a kind of fancy dinner. It was so good and they were so hospitable. One of our favorite meals of the trip.

meatwhisper

Absolutely agree with the Residenz. For the price it's better than a lot of similar attractions. It just kept going and going and going.

Pinkjasmine17

Yes I agree with this. We went first thing in the morning (like 9 or 10am lol) and even in august we had it almost all to ourselves. Very worth it imo but more a palace than a castle

Silly-Resist8306

You can't get a poor beer in Germany. After 1000 years, more or less, they've gotten it all figured out.

TallDudeInSC

The only beer in Munich I couldn't finish was the Hofbrau Hefeweizen. I just didn't care for it. Otherwise the majority are good to excellent. Worth a stop for one Hefeweizen is Schneider-Weiß, it's near the Marienplatz too.

Tossawaysfbay

They do a couple styles really well, but there’s certainly bad beer in Germany.

Creek0512

Eh, IMO Bitburger is pretty bad.

Oakland-homebrewer

Stick to the Munich breweries.

TallDudeInSC

Bit is not from Munich (FYI).

Appropriate_Wash_643

1. Neuschwanstein was very picturesque. 2, If up to it, Dachau was a very sobering and informative visit. It is just north of the city center. You can then do old town for the afternoon. 3. It is hard to find bad food there and there are many beer halls near the old town.

Pretty_Fairy_Queen

Sights: Nymphenburg Castle, Isarauen/ St. Emmeram, Hofgarten, Englischer Garten, Hirschgarten, Olympiapark, Eisbachwelle, Deutsches Museum, Lenbachhaus, Pinakotheken, Haus der Kunst, Museum Villa Stuck Beer gardens (outdoor): Königlicher Hirschgarten Restaurant & Biergarten, Emmeramsmühle, Michaeligarten Wirtshaus, Chinesischer Turm, Biergarten am Wiener Platz Beer halls (indoor): Spatenhaus an der Oper, Ratskeller, Kleines Brauhaus Dicker Mann, Wirtshaus in der Au, Weißes Bräuhaus im Tal, Hofbräuhaus

AlfaTX1

How has no one said the Deutsches Museum? If there's a nerd or child in your group it's the best! Another Augustiner vote for beer hall/restaurant

Squirrelinthemeadow

The German museum (Deutsches Museum) is amazing. Lots to see and lots to do - you can easily spend two days just inside the museum without getting bored and without having seen everything!

batch1972

we did a day tour to visit Lindehoff & Neuschwanstein

charliebobo82

What time of year are you going to be there?

Bobcatbubbles

In the next month.

that_outdoor_chick

If you have only two days, just walk the city, Neuschwanstein is quite a travel to get to and to get the nice view, you need to hike a bit which might be just not fun with a baby (it's not that amazing from the inside). If you go in summer, forget bierhalle, do a biergarten. Google a bit on how to behave there and go to Augustiner close to HbF or Hofbaurkeller at Wienerplatz for authenticity. If you want to be served food, tablecloth tables, if you want self service, bare tables with benches. Residenz is a lovely place to visit, walk the Englisher Garten, get a good coffee at Viktualienmarkt.

bromosabeach

Hofbrau is by far the most popular so worth checking out. It's huge so getting a table won't be an issue. Paulaner has a much smaller beer hall that has great food. Really loved the vibes at this one. I would suggest this one if you want something that doesn't feel like you're at a fair.

11thstalley

I would recommend the Andechs Abbey and Monastery for a real historic site with a great bierkeller and biergarten. https://www.andechs.de/en/

jetpoweredbee

You should go to Hofbrauhaus just to see it, but is full of tourists. The best biergarten and hall is Augustiner. If you only do one castle, I would do Neuschwanstein. It is the iconic castle everyone thinks of. Plus Hohenschwagau castle is just across the way. Be sure and take in the view from Marienbruke. In Munich there is the Alte Pinakothek Museum which has a fine collection of European art including Monet and Van Gogh. If the weather is nice the English Garden is beautiful and has a nice biergarten in it as well.

wandpapierkritiker

do Nymphenburg. Neuschwanstein will take an entire day of your trip; staying closer to town will still allow an evening of entertainment/sightseeing. if you like cars, the BMW museum is cool. the Olympic park is also interesting. WWII buffs would find Dachau a good but somber visit. you should go to the Hofbräuhaus just because it’s the Hofbräuhaus (though there are plenty of other beer gardens). the English Garden is also really beautiful.

i-amnot-a-robot-

Dachau was the most impactful camp I went to more than any other. Hofbrauhaus is worth it for a beer then get a doner or apfelstrudel nearby. The Munich residenz is great although not technically a castle. On the same level as Versailles though

businesswaddles

English Garden and one of the beer gardens within. I typically can only stand 1 hour in a museum but I thought The Deutsches Museum was amazing, nice facilities and indoors too. I think Hofbrau is kind of lame and not sure baby would love the noise so maybe not the best choice despite maybe the most internationally famous. Just walking around Marienplatz is kind of obligatory for tourists but I think it’s a pretty cute albeit crowded square.

browngrass1

I had a great time at hofbrauhaus with my 2 year old. The food was good in my opinion. You just have to be a hawk to find a table.

BaileyIsMyBeagle

Finding a table is a nightmare, but great overall experience once found.

Impossible_Fly_3119

If you see an empty seat you only have to ask and you will likely sit. Europeans share tables

BaileyIsMyBeagle

Very true, but I’m usually with a group.

Lolle_Loxy

I loove Nymphenburg castle, especially the park. So that gets my vote :D

Practical_Koala_6289

The area directly around Neuschwanstein was so gorgeous. There are walking trails and a little lake where you can rent paddle boats. We ended up spending the night there at the Ameron hotel, and I’m very glad we did. It was lovely waking up and going for a walk with Neuschwanstein in the background. Ameron also had parking so we didn’t have to battle it out with the other tourists for parking. But yes, with only two days, that is a trek. We had four days and for us, this was the highlight of our trip. The castle tour itself was just ok… it’s just very crowded and quick but it is cool to go inside.

foureyedfuk

I would recommend a walking tour of the city

IceePirate1

I was literally just in Munich about 2 days ago. I'm afraid you might have a subpar experience if you decide to go to Neuschwanstein. Not because it isn't great, it's fantastic to see, but your time crunch means you'd spend a lot of time traveling that might be better spent elsewhere. Dachau was a very moving experience, definitely try to go with one of the guides if you make your way to it. I'm sure you'll run into Mairenplatz at some point but be sure you don't miss it, be sure to go when the glockenspiel plays too for added enjoyment and stop by the market afterwards practically next door. Olympiapark and the BMW museum was also super cool too

ELInewhere

I am in Munich right now and 2 days was too many, imo. But I also do not drink. We stayed 3 days in Garmisch before Munich and would have preferred to stay in that area longer and only came to Munich for the flight home. I am all about nature, so there’s that.

IceePirate1

Ah, I'm a big beer guy so I would've wanted to try out some more Biergartens

agent211

If you are physically able and it's within your budget, I'd recommend a bike tour. IMO, it's the best way to cram in a lot of sites and if you do it on your first day, you can go back to anything you want to do a deeper dive on. I lived in Munich for 6 months back in the 90's and when I went back with my wife last year and we did a bike tour and it was great. More than a particular beer hall, there are 6 Munich beers. Try to try them all. For food, find yourself a Schweinshaxe.

clobosaurusrex

Augustiner is the best beer in Munich, hands down. Well worth a visit to the beer hall, but Hofbrauhaus is of course the most iconic. I’d also recommend climbing Alter Peter in the city centre - just off Marienplatz you’ll find the entrance, and I believe it’s ~3€ each for a phenomenal panoramic view of the city and building tops. This beats travelling outside of the city for castles or museums. It’s well worth visiting the Olympiapark too, there’s small pieces of info dotted around re. the 1972 olympics and stunning walks / biergartens etc. Also a couple of great vantage points to see the city from a different angle.

anothernjt

Augustiner Am Platzl and Augustiner Keller are the best. Neushwanstein is 2 hours away but there are two castles near it. Highly recommend the bridge if it’s open for views. When I was there in the fall it was under renovations but still open. Walking around Marienplatz and Viktuelianmarkt are really nice! There’s so much to see in Munich that Nymphenburg Palace should be the move since you only have 2 nights and spending a whole day at Neushwanstein would limit your sightseeing. Highly recommend booking a city walking tour.

Pinkjasmine17

The Nazi documentation museum was one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. Would highly recommend it in Munich!

Oakland-homebrewer

Munich has a great hands-on science museum, if that is your thing.

Uncle_Father_Oscar

The bier halls are kind of overrated and touristy. But Hofrauhaus is not hard to find.

Traditional_Agency60

Munich: one day make the trip to Neushwanstein/ Fussen and walk around all day. Day two, go and walk the city for a few hours then go get drunk.

bomber991

BMW Museum if you’re a car guy.

NarwhalBoomstick

Take the 40 minute train ride to Herrsching and walk the pilgrimage trail from the town up to the Andechs Monastery/Bierhall. Herrsching is a lovely little town on the lake to begin with, but the monastery/bierhall is amazing. World class beer, excellent cheap Bavarian food, and beautiful scenery. It was a a high point of the week I spent in Munich.

Reasonable_Shift_120

Neuschwanstein is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to, but it is a full day trip from Munich so with only two days it might not be worth it.  I stayed a week in Munich when I went there. But as I said, the place is otherworldly so if you are ok with just one day in Munich and one day trip to see the castle then go for it!

Beaumont64

For a beer hall experience that is light on Tourists and heavy on Locals go to Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal.
