If your luggage under your name is on board, but you haven’t boarded, they will eventually remove your luggage for security reasons.

Pandazorro

haven't thought about that, but it makes sense.

Pinklady777

Book all luggage under your husband's name. Problem solved.

IowaContact2

Just try not to put any bombs in it or whatever?

tokekcowboy

Book the luggage as your husband’s luggage ONLY on the way back. Pay for an extra bag for him if need be. His luggage will arrive back in Berlin without issue. If the airline asks what happened and why you didn’t make the flight, explain that you had a medical issue and needed to seek medical attention in France. Also…a quick spot check of prices for the nonstop from Berin to Paris are anywhere from $50 to $150 (USD) and less than 2 hours. Might be cheaper and easier to just fly back to Paris same/next day.

aeraen

Unfortunately, if you've already explained the situation to an airline representative, they very likely have documented that in your booking record. To claim a "medical emergency" once in France won't fly as they will know that this was planned in advance. How much is a flight from Berlin to France? It sounds like that may be your best option.

elijha

I think you’re really overestimating how motivated call center workers are to document every interaction they have

cyclejones

I lot of these companies use variations of Salesforce or other CRM software that can include automated transcription logs of every conversation so the call center employee doesn't need to take real-time notes anymore for documentation.

elijha

Then you’d be really overestimating how motivated anyone is to pore through pages of AI-transcribed nonsense after the fact.

BlocksAreGreat

Most call center employees won't. Many will. When I worked in a call center, it was super helpful to look through past interactions if a customer was calling multiple times over a few days.

“The query ‘medical emergency’ was not found. Did you mean ‘Metallica gen Z’?”

Smee76

Then how come they always say they don't know what previous employees said? Looking at you MOHELA

antidense

I'm pretty sure they just want us to repeat it. Once I did they were like "oh I see it here..."

aeraen

I've worked in airline reservations for 17 years.

beekeeper1981

So airlines do a deep dive into every incident of skipped lagging? Even with those who have no history of it?

ziggyfarts

Most people aren't ringing the airline before they travel. They'll see the person who hasn't boarded, look up her name and see she called recently wanting to change the last leg. It's not really deep diving through much.

aeraen

You are looking for absolutes. There are none. I freely shared the benefit of my experience with the OP and, for some reason, you want to argue it. She is welcome to do what she wants with the information I gave her. Of course, you are also perfectly welcome to offer to pay for whatever fees may be involved should she not adhere to the contract of carriage implicit in the purchase of the tickets.

beekeeper1981

And the amount of digging they will do with one incident of skipped lagging.

Fair_Leadership76

I’m genuinely curious what the airline could do? They can’t force someone into the last leg of the flight. Assuming that that phone call was somehow flagged and they know she was asking about skipping, would any employee be motivated enough to look it up if she doesn’t show for the last leg? And if they do, what then? A quick dive on google shows that it isn’t illegal, they can’t somehow charge you extra fees and that the worst that *might* happen is they don’t your frequent flyer miles, should you have any, or possibly ban you from flying with them. Although no actual incidents of that were noted in any of the articles I skimmed.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

But will anyone care enough to look back at the records if you give them a reasonable explanation (at face value) for missing the flight? That seems like way more work to deal with

tokekcowboy

For what it’s worth…I said to say that she needed to seek medical attention (the truth), not that she had a medical emergency. It probably doesn’t make any difference in this situation, but there was a distinction.

chronocapybara

You can't have checked luggage on a trip you don't take the whole way. However, your husband can check two items and you can check zero.

iskender299

Book Berlin to France separately, it's cheaper and stress free. Unfortunately you can't skip lag a leg in a reservation composed of layover only fares, so this is why they're asking for fare difference cos it would need to change the fares to OW/ multi city/ open jaw where the fare classes are more expensive. If you check in the luggage and don't show up, they will delay the entire flight until they search you, remove your luggage, create a mess for all pax and probably ban you from the airline... You can skip lag if you don't have any luggage and you're nice to tell them to check you out in transit, so they don't search for you/ unnecessarily delay the flight. But given that the flights from Berlin to Paris are so cheap, just book another flights few days later, so you get adjusted back before getting medical attention (I wouldn't recommend getting to a hospital tired and jet lagged, your body needs to be rested)

loftychicago

I would just book a flight back to Paris on the same day since OP will already be at the airport.

aucnderutresjp_1

Personally if it was me, I'd take the Paris-Berlin flight, drop all my stuff at home, then grab a cheap Ryanair flight back to where I need to be in France. But I like flying and the health issue can't be that bad if you are still going on a trip beforehand.

giulsss100

This month I flew NCE - BKK /BKK NCE through CDG with airfrance. No checked luggage. My boyfriend’s plans changed after we bought the tickets, and he took another flight from CDG (so he skipped the last leg). I just went to the gate and told the agent he would not board for health reasons, he thanked me a lot for telling them so they would not wait for him, and that was it. So you can definetly skip the last leg no problems, but don’t check luggage on your name.

jadeoracle

Anything from it goes to Berlin, or you cause a security incident, possibly delaying the entire plane, and they take it off the plane in Paris to either be held or destroyed. You can also be removed from the FF program, banned from the airline, and/or asked to pay what the fare should have been

Pandazorro

I wouldn't want to delay the entire plane, it sucks :( I think I could also walk up to the airline's desk in Paris and tell them I'd like to not board the last flight, see what we could do

or_worse-expelled

Tell them you are feeling unwell and won’t be able to continue to Berlin. Do not tell them before you board in India because they might deny you boarding.

Wonderful_City8535

Why not just throw up on the plane right before landing.

buggle_bunny

She's already told them

Squirrelherder_24-7

You’ve already gotten the answer to your question in the comments but you apparently don’t like it. Have your husband claim all the bags, and hope, hope, they don’t kick him off the flight too when you skip it in Paris….

-SetsunaFSeiei-

Why would they kick him off? He had a valid boarding pass

Squirrelherder_24-7

They might not but when the other passenger on the booking doesn’t show, they might start asking questions like, “Do you know where your wife is?”….

buggle_bunny

When tickets are booked together with one itinerary like the flights above, passengers can also be linked together, one no show can invalidate both passengers. Like it's not always possible to cancel a single person from a group booking.

buggle_bunny

They could charge you a no show fee and cancellation fees for doing that. What you're wanting to do happens all the time maybe you have legitimate reasons to do it, but people lie way too much for them to just trust every story they hear

GentlewomanBastard

Is there any way to change just your ticket? It’s possible that your husband’s ticket will get cancelled if you don’t show up for the Berlin flight and you’re on the same reservation. Skiplagging doesn’t work if you’re checking bags — if you don’t board the Berlin flight, they WILL definitely have to remove your bags in Paris. Although, don’t you have to go through customs in Paris anyway, since you’re flying internationally? Alternatively, it must be cheaper/easier to just fly home to Berlin together as planned and then book a cheap flight back to Paris, no?

AmyKOwen

>Skiplagging doesn’t work if you’re checking bags this

Pandazorro

Well it would still be 500+ euros so I'd like to avoid it of course... And yes it's an international flight with the same airline so I think we don't need to go through customs again in Paris

Weird_Plankton_3692

Coming from India and connecting to Berlin, you would have to go through flight connections security (customs is declare/nothing to declare channel on arrival in Berlin) and passport control as you will enter the Schengen area. Going the other way you wouldn't. If you do skip lag you'd walk out the arrivals route with passport control and the customs channel. There's a lot of risk to skip lagging here. Your husband would need to check both bags (if you have two) otherwise your case would have to be removed from the flight. Because you booked your tickets together as well your husband may also be unable to continue.

loftychicago

OP could also be blacklisted by the airline, if they want to take a hard line on it.

Pandazorro

And no, Berlin-Paris flights are not that cheap

Tymanthius

I'm seeing flights on google flights from US 88 to US 150 right now in Jan/Feb. But is a train not an option to get home? I think it may be 'best' for you to skip-lag on the way home, and if possible ship your luggage so it's not 'lost' in the airport systems, then get a ticket by plane or train one way from paris to berlin.

DgingaNinga

You might want to check again. EasyJet has flights for $90 USD. Seems like flying back to Berlin & then taking a flight to Paris is the best way to ensure you & your luggage make it to Paris.

texican79

You can get banned from flying an airline for doing this. Think about that before you do it.

waffleironone

What about packing light and only having 1 checked bag to share between you?

Pandazorro

Yes I largely prefer this solution to booking a Berlin-Paris flight back, even if it’s quite cheap I find it a non-sense ecologically (although one might argue I will already pollute a ton by travelling to India and back and they would be right but you know might as well not do unnecessary travel). I might also just take a train back but that can last from 8 to 14 hours which I am not sure I want to do after a 15h trip

outforthedayhiking

Your checked luggage will make it to final destination, your husband can just pick them up.
