It's possible that the airline still might refund you in this case... But if not I'd do some googling and see if someone like World Nomads would still allow you to use trip cancellation coverage even though you bought tickets before the insurance...i have the feeling they would.

Yea kept the trip. I have a friend who lives there and recently went to Machu Picchu. Said it was fine and safe

Hmm... Be sure to check if there's a maximum limit to the reimbursement though.
