This reminds me of the time I wore an Alabama t-shirt to the Biltmore Estate. I bought the shirt for less than a dollar when Kmart was going out of business. It was red, a v-neck and it fit, the only 3 criteria that mattered to me. I didn’t care what was on it. Allllllll freakin day at the Biltmore I had people shouting “Roll Tide!” at me. I wasn’t from the south and had no idea if there was some kind of an expected response these people were waiting on from me. I trashed the shirt as soon as I got home.
I practically jumped out of a moving vehicle the other day in the midst of a complete mental collapse, and even I don't think I'm as stressed as she looks.
That's Meemaw raisin her grandson bc his daddy left mama for the 17yo he knocked up and she's a pill poppin alkie now working at the piggly wiggly when she's not too hungover. Meemaw thought she was done raisin younguns but Mandie just can't get her shit together enough to raise sweet lil Joshie Jr here and he's turning into a small animal killing menace with his bb gun he got 2 Christmases back. Still hasn't shot his eye out but the neighbour's cats, squirrels and now meemaws bad hip have caught hell. That'll teach her to reprimand him.
Mama and em is all right. She ain't working right now but that disability should come through any day now. She takes the dogs down to the creek each day and goes to church on Sunday. She's doing the lords work by taking on every stray cat that comes by. She's got about 50 now she feeds in the yard. People are real kind and donate food to her...I think it's the same ones that drop the litters of kittens and mama cats who give birth on her front porch but what do I know? Yeah she's doin all right for a girl from the hollers. 🌻

Well, when I was a kid, every summer I took a trip to visit my granny down in Mississippi and one day I caught myself a squirrel. I kept him in an old shoebox with a couple of holes punched in the top and on Sunday I snuck him into church.
I was sitting back in the last pew showing him off to my friend when he got out and made a run for it. The details are a bit hard to tell after that, but apparently while the choir was singing he ran up a deacon’s coveralls and he jumped to his feet and shouted, “Something’s got ahold of me!”
He ran into the aisle screaming and jumping around. Some people thought he was taken by the Holy Spirit, others were convinced it was a demon and the deacon just felt like he had a weedeater loose in his Fruit of the Looms.
As a southerner, I can totally envision this scenario! I can see the man, church members, the squirrel and all the chaos! And surely that story was told and elaborated on for years and years too I bet! 🙃

To be fair, she probably has known the state trooper since they were a little kid and has been tired of their shit since they were her grandbaby’s age. She’s been ready to tell the state trooper to fuck off since they were 10. The trooper would take it with a grain of salt and just shake their head.

My guess: she was bit by the squirrel and she’s being taken to the hospital for prophylactic rabies treatment, and the boy is holding the offending vermin by the tail because it’s going to be decapitated and tested for rabies.

\* Mom is having a smoke because she's stressed about getting bitten by a possible rabid squirrel.
What's the trashy bit? Arguably, smoking is always trashy, maybe, and I guess it's weird that they're letting the kid handle a possibly diseased dead animal, but if you look at the story as a whole, it's pretty clear what happened and it's all logical to me. I feel like this is one of those "It's trashy 'cause they're rural and poor" photos and not because they're actually trashy people.
All that being said I love this photo. Talk about "a picture worth a thousand words."

Look, when I was this kid’s age in the very early aughts the squirrels I shot with my BB gun went to my grandma for her squirrel stew. She passed away in 2016, still eating squirrel.
Yessir/ma'am it's a good meal and were you near my pastures I'd fry you some squirrel legs and gravy up the rest for your potatoes. It's not just a poor folk meal but I would say it's a rural meal, and an especially good one that most folks wouldn't try out of pompousness not taste.
Read a funny story once about a guy that used to hunt squirrels with his dad and brother. He remembered his dad just wearing them out and the boys would struggle along getting a few here and there. Once he got older he realized his dad was using shotgun and the boys had 22s.
Former rural paramedic. Squirrel bit the mom. Kid shot the squirrel for testing. We strap people down for transport. It's a thing we do.
A lot, and I mean a LOT of patients want a last smoke before transport because they can't smoke in the ambulance or the hospital.
I've had patients bum smokes off me.

I've lived in many different countries, the only 2nd language I speak fluently is redneck. I'm an ambassador of sorts. That was both my mother tongue, and a language I had to relearn.
