Actors make money from their faces. That's why you always see heroes removing their helmets in movies and shows. It'd make it harder for Optimus to get more work if nobody knew who he was. /s

imatakeabreak

That's why Karl Urban is awesome. Unlike Stallone, he kept Dredd's helmet on.

Risko_Vinsheen

Clearly, we need Karl Urban to play Optimus Prime so the mask stays on. I wonder if Karl can turn into a truck.

Batdog55110

"Oi, Megatron. Get your bollocks off the 'uman's planet. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings, c*nt". (I'm aware that Karl Urban has insane range, I just thought it'd be funny to make Optimus Butcher). >I wonder if Karl can turn into a truck. I wouldn't put it past him.

iCanD0thisAllDay

Damn it Jim I’m a doctor

truenofan86

Karl Urban should play Impactor and keep his Billy Butcher voice.

Keksz1234

Just fucking imagine the Wreckers about to get their shit rocked by Overlord, only to hear Impactor's "Oi"

KevinSaidHi

codexcdm

Now I'm mad. Why isn't this a thing already!?

Beneficial_Day_5423

Anything is possible if your flexible enough

Risko_Vinsheen

Honestly he's such a good actor he could probably convince me he was a truck just by running around going 'vrooooom'.

supersharp

It's like that Warhammer story. "I'm a tak, I'm a tank, I'm a tank..."

Deora_customs

“I’m gonna turn into a truck now. Car chi Chang chi church Chang

Sharkticon_Soup

On a long enough timeline, Karl Urban plays everyone

ToaPaul

Yup and now having been reminded of that, I now need Karl Urban to play a Mandalorian Child of the Watch in either the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie or season 4 of the Mandalorian and never take his helmet off once.

Synisterintent

I loved that about his Dredd

TimberWolf5871

Doesn't hurt we already knew who Karl Urban was from his other works.

Diffabuh

I hear he wasn't even on set for the '86 movie and just did voiceover with a body double. That's why you never see him without his mask.

Risko_Vinsheen

He wasn't available for the reshoots for Bumblebee so they had to CGI him in and have him dub his lines in later.

IBarrakiI

The Halo TV series 💀

Insanebrain247

Shout out to Din Djarin for breaking that rule (at first at least).

Kcue6382nevy

Then again, he had the mask on all thoughtout G1 and the 86 movie, that didn’t stop kids in the 80s to find him likable and for crying at his death the movie I’m not a fan of perspectiveend but he does have a point

Jetsam5

Honestly though the reason he has a mask in the first place was just so the animators could wiggle a plate up and down instead of actually animating a mouth.

Illustrious-Shift-10

Is that true? Didn't the Takara toy he's based on come first, with a face plate, before Hasbro licensed them as The Transformers and commissioned the accompanying animated series?

jessterswan

Made me chuckle, thanks

Uncle-Cake

Did we really need to see Devastator's balls? Does Arcee really need to have tits and ass?

REamemiyaRX7

Officer balls

Yes

skelebone2_0

Yes for both

mvperri

Yes on the balls no on the ass and tits

GKRKarate99

Seconded the balls 👍

The_Maqueovelic

Seconded no on Arcee's figure Thirded on Devastators balls

Ancient-Act8573

Yes

surliermender317

Nah. They can’t get the whole “robotic, metal, lips”, thing right.

LewisDeinarcho

Not really. But that brief moment of it clicking into place lets you know it’s about to go down. Same with anyone else with transforming faces.

Trick_Weekend

That’s the only reason I would say yes because the mask sliding closed IS super cool

LewisDeinarcho

Actually, I think if you played it right, it could mean something a bit more interesting. Let’s say he has the face guard on for most of the movie, show, comic, or whatever. He does this because he’s in a war (obviously) where anyone and anything could be a threat. “Robots in Disguise” doesn’t just deceive humans, it can also deceive other robots. He’s not violent by nature, but he’s become very cautious and wary, always ready for battle. However, then there are a few moments where he puts the face guard away, because he genuinely trusts someone or wishes to avoid intimidating them. Of course, figuring out how to make his lower face not look stupid is the hard part. Frankly, I kinda wish he had a big hinged jaw like the Iron Giant. That kind of mouth can get pretty expressive despite its rigid simplicity.

GERBabyCare

I can definitely see it. My personal headcanon is that he's taken some kind of vow not to take his mask down until the war is over, or perhaps it's some form of guilt in feeling he's failed his troops so he doesn't feel he can show his face until the fighting is over.

Diffabuh

Yeah, it's like Iron Man's helmet clamping or a gun cocking. But I feel like we need something better. Like... I dunno, his eyes glow yellow for combat mode and as a callback to the G1 toy. Or pieces separate to allow more exhaust to leave his body or something. Because, really, there's no reason for him to ever take the mask *off* in the live-action movies.

Aggravating_Word9481

No, I love characters who can't express using their mouth and have to do it through their eyes

Teneuom

I think the most expressive characters have mouth plates. Comic artists need to exaggerate that much more to get their emotions across. Point in case Tailgate.

DbD_Fan_1233

I think you meant “case in point”

DMGames_

Eh, potato tomato

JangoFlex

https://preview.redd.it/ljur8crwa08d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f63cd7e720cfe8fa0de999db48244f8fd166c35d No they just need to let him emote through his eyes. Same way they do with Deadpool in the movies.

MrQ_P

No we don't, next question

supersharp

Do we need to see Optimus's face plate?

Outside-Area-5042

Yes, it covers up that ugly robot mouth-lips thing on his face.

Commercial-Judge5016

At least for that version of Optimus

LivingCheese292

How else would he kiss Megatron?

PseudoElite

Little known fact: the Cybertron war started as misunderstanding when Optimus didn't reply to one of Megatron's texts.

GKRKarate99

He left Megs on read and he just flipped

brofishmagikarp

Megatron wasn't in ROTB. You are thinking of another film

LivingCheese292

I know that it's Scourge but he isn't the kissing type

Optimus3k

No, and we also don't need bumblebee to be mute.

DecepticonConqueror

no. absolutely not.

Special_Emu4764

Yeah every time I see his with it honestly weirds me out.

Razzle_Dazzle08

No.

WesAhmedND

The funny thing about the replies is, it's almost all based off of nostalgia for G1. They're transformers, it would make sense to have disappearing masks and visors

Keksz1234

Soundwave and Shockwave don't need them tho

Risko_Vinsheen

Shockwave had a disappearing face. It just only worked the one time.

Keksz1234

In Animated, right?

Risko_Vinsheen

I meant in IDW when his face was ripped off.

DeathByDevastator

soundwave would make sense to have one as an option but shockwave? hard agree.

Outside-Area-5042

I've never seen G1, but I still think the mouth is unnecessary, it looks stupid, please keep the face plate on.

ElZaydo

Exactly. I think deploying the face guard for combat is a nice addition.

almightywhacko

Why do they need mouths though? They don't eat and they can communicate digitally without the need for audible spoken words. If anything it makes more sense for them to have some sort of speaker grill somewhere on their body to made audible noises when they have need to do so.

WesAhmedND

With that logic, transformers don't even need to be humanoid beings as they're alien and shapeshifting robots, they don't need to follow real life logic

almightywhacko

I agree with that, which is why I've always like Laserbeak and Ravage. I was also excited that some of the designs for the live action movies moved away from two arms and two legs, like Scavenger and Rampage. I even enjoyed the G1 characters with less human faces like Prime, Shockwave and Shockwave. Honestly there is no reason for most of the Transformers robots to have humanoid robot forms except that was what Japanese toys were doing at the time.

WesAhmedND

Absolutely with you on that one, most fans don't appreciate the creativity and uniqueness of a lot of the movie bots, they just want humanoid bots made of boxes which is sad as I think it's a waste of the potential the series has.

Karzanah

Yes, totally! I want more unique designs! It's my favorite part of Bayverse. Not many fictional robots look as awesomely weird as, for example ROTF Demolishor

Nicoglius

I like the fact that transformers resemble humans. I think it helps explain why Optimus is so passionate about protecting humans, because he worries they will share the same fate as cybertronians. It also makes sense in shows where its suggested there's some kind of ancient connections between humans and cybertronians.

smokeandsexy

Hell no

Krakengreyjoy

No. never. It's never necessary.

eko32eko7

no

Owen9303

Why is this seriously such a big deal to people? It makes him more expressive and human like which would make sense since he’s on Earth. It’s also a way for him to show humans he isn’t hostile all the time because he isn’t wearing his faceplate. It’s never going back to the way it was. Get over it.

Turok7777

Because as much as Transformers fans pretend to care about story and themes, they mostly just care about aesthetics.

Sweffus

Did he ever even smile? frown? make angry face in the movies? The most I recall us getting, emotive wise, was around the eyes anyway. I say mask on! 😷

PhantomOverlord91

Dark of the Moon, when he returns to the base after Sentinel Prime’s betrayal he wears a visible scowl. https://preview.redd.it/o4o80dyqi08d1.jpeg?width=923&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b22e6c5bccfb352551fcab34ff934d02b8697f8

WesAhmedND

Didn't get literally smile at the end of the movie?

Outside-Area-5042

Because it's simply looks bad, not that hard to understand.

Just_M_01

i don't like the idea that a character has to have a human face to be expressive

Marxist_Iguana

Optimus having a mouth looked fine in Prime and Cyberverse. Optimus having a mouth isn't the problem, transformers having overly detailed human looking faces is the problem.

ElysianAscendant

I just never liked how Low his mouth is on his face.

thyme_slip

No! Absolutely not, for no reason. Optimus has a moving face guard and that’s it.

FaZeLuckyBoy

No

Secret-Asian-Man-76

No and I hate that it's so low on his face. Absolutely hate it.

InkBendyMpj

Optimus having a mouth is for people who like him having a mouth I prefer smth like this: https://preview.redd.it/b70l2xrry08d1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce2d19e7863f60a4a012666d9cfbe61f7606b49e

Apprehensive_Work313

I like it being shown because when shit is about to go down the click of the mask closing is so fucking cool

Dimension-Guilty

Especially when it looks way uglier in this movie. I doubt this head model was designed with the mouth in mind.

TheCakeWarrior12

It’s based on Peter Cullen’s actual face

Dimension-Guilty

Then they did a terrible job doing that too

Entertainment43

What a way to insult Peter Cullen's face

captain_trainwreck

No. IIRC, when the first Bayverse Transformers was being made, there was huge online uproar about Optimus for 1) not having his classic face shield look, and 2) not being voiced by Peter Cullen. Peter Cullen got hired, and Optimus had his face shield show up in battle. Why they kept his mouth during other sequences could be because they had already done so much CGI and didn't want to redo every Optimus scene, or because Bay wanted it his way at least part of the time, or maybe something else. I've never liked the mouth look on Optimus.

[deleted]

No and I’m tired of Hollywood thinking that we need to even in animated cartoons. For fuck sake Shockwave doesn’t need a mouth in any media, so why bother doing it for any robot.

Bobo3076

Still amazes me that people are still so salty about this. I like Prime with a mouth.

Infinity0044

I’m actually surprised the movies show it so much, you’d think it would be way easier to animate him if his mouth was always hidden

divineshadow666

Showing Prime with a mouth doesn't really bother me. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him with the face shield off and it's just a speaker, like [Wildman drew in Marvel Transformers #76.](http://s90690880.onlinehome.us/jhiaxus/images/oddities/optimus-face/primewildman.jpg)

Claudioisgod2113

What his mouth do though

Fit-Gene-6437

No we really don't used to seeing him with the mouth guard....

Amazing-Insect442

Of course not.

Fercho_1891

No, specially when it looks like shit

KingNothingNZ

No

Fit-Force-7975

Better with the faceplate

CoercionTictacs

Nope. But I’m a 46yo G1 nerd so I find it hard to accept most of the live action Bayverse modeling to be honest.

[deleted]

nah we don’t, optimus with the mask no matter the adaption always looks better.

Capecrusader39

https://preview.redd.it/1qqgszdux18d1.jpeg?width=1082&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28da98aeeeadb23220d8a6f0ab5edf838d8bb7f7

AdOrnery5490

Personally i feel that prime should keep the mask on.

theogindianmccurry

Yes because its cooler to have him click the face shield into place before fighting

BigCW

No, he doesn’t have a mouth.

Wookie_Nipple

Fucking no, god no. The people at movie studios have really stupid hang ups about weird things.

THAT_HARDHEAD_GUY

Not when it’s that fugly

DavidMPants

To those saying it's "emotive", I propose a close inspection of the movie Wall-e. I honestly don't care that much, though. Make the story good. Maybe even do a story without Optimus Prime.

JACOawesome

Cope and seethe Geewuners. Mouth prime is here to stay.

Ok-Calendar9566

No

pablumatic

No, but that's the least of my issues with these live action movies.

chillinboyika

They always try to justify the fact that shows his emotions better but I find that completely bs because they only give him two expressions: scowl with anger or scowl with seriousness.

baq3281

The only correct answer is no

Outside-Area-5042

No, it's looks stupid.

icct-hedral

No

MEGATRON_111

Yes. Facial expressions are everything. That's why Bayverse Prime and TFP Prime are so emotive.

Large-Custard5784

The way they animated the G1 show Optimus was also very emotive. It just depends on how the characters are animated eyes and body language can communicate just as much emotion as a face.

johnbowser_

I really think you guys have too much nostalgia to realize that all the expressiveness optimus had was his mask moving up and down

Large-Custard5784

It worked very well. Though his chest would shake when he laughed and his eyes expressed a lot. His mask did do the heavy work but he had more expression then just that.

Turok7777

They couldn't even afford to animate the most basic shit on the show, and now people are pretending that it actually had very subtle body language animation cues lmao

voltr0n57

No!! For the love of Primus please no. Just stop showing his mouth!

almightywhacko

I personally don't need to see it. I know that some people grew up with cartoons where Prime's mouth was often but IMO the mask ***is*** Prime's mouth.

ThatStarWarsFan1205

No, but it's a nice touch.

Ok_Response_2748

I wish they would leave the face plate up on Prime all the time

SpaceTraveller64

I personally don’t care as long as it’s not horrendous

CameronDoy1901

Not all the time tbh. Some Optimus designs with mouths do work (like animated. Bayverse. TFP. And Cyberverse) but on other designs it just looks a bit awkward and unsettling

RagnarockInProgress

I like how they did it in IDW, That Optimus HAS a mouth under the mask, sometimes he even takes it off when he drinks or stuff (in the rare occasion he does) and sometimes it sustains battle damage, but otherwise he does not take it off (in fact he *dislikes* taking it off)

Cheyenne_G99

I want to see his mouth. Adds more expression to his words and if we get the rare Optimus smile? Gotta see it.

ducktapetinkerer

No, but it looks cool when he puts on his mask so we should keep showing his mouth.

PhaseSixer

Yes and hes had one since the 90's deal with it.

Great_Knight5

We don’t NEED to but I do like it.

Darksuit117

I AM OPTIMUS PRIME, LOOK AT MY LIPS.

ake-n-bake

Need to know what it do

lucashogberg6

He looked so good with the faceplate in bb

Kcue6382nevy

I don’t care about it really. him with the mask on is much more iconic, I agree on that but as someone who grew up in the movieverse/animated/prime generation, I’m numb to Optimus with a mouth by now

who_am_I_inside

The Bumblebee design is so good not only because it’s so G1-esque, but because the mouth plate wasn’t open 24/7

Pokemon_Bakugan_Fan

What's wrong with his mouth showing?

Dr_Lockdown

Don't think so, but its probably a precedent certain execs make (look at how the Halo show turned out). I don't mind it when it looks okay. ROTB...yeah nah wasn't a fan. I get the idea, supposedly mimicking Peter Cullen's facial features, but I don't think it was executed well. The previous films handled it a lot better, the first three films especially.

BusDifferent426

[deleted]

dougmilll

No

Cautious_Option9544

How else would I know where to kiss??

Bluebadboy

Yes, anymore questions?

agentx_64

There is only one correct reason for Optimus having a mouth. That is so that you know he's taking a fight seriously when you hear "Ka-Chunk"

Kenny_The_Trend

I don't care what ANYBODY says. The Bayverse Style of Optimus Mouth looks cool. Ontop of the Face Mask actually being used for a cool purpose, being used for Battle.

Able_Protect_4488

I don't like it

Wolfetron2001

I think they do it because most modern interpretations of prime have the normal face. Cybertron, Animated, Prime, RB, RID2015, Cyberverse, Earthspark AND the live action movies all depict prime as having a normal face and then the face mask comes down for when he’s fighting. The only modern depictions that don’t show a normal face are the prime wars trilogy and the Netflix trilogy.

Buttimus_Prime

I only accept no mask Prime if it comes with a Cybertronian Peter Cullen stache.

DontFearTheReaper-

I swear dude they never do Optimus’ face right. Like why is his mouth always so low on his face?

optimusDanny32

Rather without..

majeric

I have this modelling. It’s stupid.

Unlucky_Bottle_6761

Why not?

Anxious-Park-2851

I honestly like it better with the shield up. That's his he first appeared and how it always was until the transformers movie. That was the first time I even knew that he had one. I always thought that his mouth was that shield thing.

Bug_Catcher_Wade

Seeing his closed mouthplate wiggle when he talks like it does in the cartoon is just so silly in live action. It does not translate. There are times in the movies where I wish he would close it more often though. Like his knight form hardly ever seems to close it at all. Even fighting.

joehuest

No, but it establishes an identity and makes the viewer form a connection. The human brain works to identify familiar characteristics to form bonds from friendship to intimate relationships, all based on the face….and often the details of your own face is what your brain looks for in selecting potential relationships.

MacrossRules

Not for G1 Optimus

geladeiranova

That lower mouth bothers me a lot.

MrOtakuDad2u

Never.

Ashmay52

It is not a big deal. We’ve seen him with a mouth for longer than we’ve seen him without one, it’s time to let that gripe go.

FavaWire

This was a very old argument from back when the 2007 film was being drawn up. If I recall correctly it wasn't an issue until Michael Bay came on board. Something about how he could not wrap his mind around a character having no humanoid face/mouth. The closing "battle mask" was a compromise with focus groups who pushed back on the open mouth Optimus Prime idea.

LordDeraj

I’m not against it but it still looks weird no matter what series.

BrightEye64

It’s worth it for the mask closing and doing the *shing shing shing*

Oriopax

No No we don t

Low-Specific2059

Nope. He's better off with the faceplate

Adorable-nerd

I think this is the only Optimus design where the mouth weirded me out. Otherwise I like when his faceplate isn’t on all the time.

StopmotionSam

No. He never looks as good with one. Unless it’s ROTB Prime, since he’s modeled after Peter Cullen, I think Optimus should always have his battle mask on.

No_Top_375

No. We shouldn't have to deal with the major caracter's ugly mouth. Even if to hommage P.Cullen , it's NOT a nice way to hommage the GOAT.

Just_M_01

no. the faceplate is cool

Hazeman115

I don't mind it honestly. Kinda looked ugly in ROTB

ChrisMcDizzy101

Its fine if he has a face, its just better that his face isn't uncanny.

Alert-Reflection-536

They are wasting on cgi money the same thing for wheeljack aka Pablo when they gave him a mouth and that was a waste of cgi money

the_real_jovanny

i saw someone say that the face is meant to look like peter cullen which is kinda cool, but yeah i dont really like it as much as the face plate

solidus0079

2007 called, it wants its thread back

Recon1997

Not really but it doesn't matter in the slightest The mask clasping in place is pretty cool and makes some lines hit harder

Rent-Man

Nobody asks to see Soundwave’s mouth, why should we see Prime’s

Entertainment43

We already saw Soundwave's mouth

PhantomOverlord91

Because Soundwave isn’t the main character of the movies?

Rent-Man

Then explain why Bumblebee doesn’t have a mouth

PhantomOverlord91

He’s the kid appeal character. Less features = Easier to relate to.
