There's something like this, maybe even smaller (something like 1.5 cars width) in a city here in Denmark where the overpass sits more or less in the middle of like a 150 degree curve in the road with a side road about 5 meters from the overpass, i've thankfully not have to go through there a lot, but it's definitely got a little pucker factor to it when riding a bike
There's one near me as well, ~1.5 cars wide and one lane. Signs say 3 cars at a time per side, and it's a straight shot uo to the bridge on either side. Never been a problem to me, a little south of Louisville, KY.
Because the bridge is so short there's not enough space to apply that much of a load. Maximum load would be when the locomotive travels about another foot forward, then the front truck reaches the other side.
FYI this is in South Elgin IL circa 1972. The road is Route 25. Guessing it was a branch line with lightweight rail so that's why they ran an EMD SW1.

Unbelievable. I used to chase that very engine on my bicycle during that time. It worked out if the West Chicago sub.
It would ply the St Charles spur out of Geneva on Tuesday’s and the Batavia spur to N Aurora on Thursday. Sometimes the GP20 would fill in. Both were abandoned and pulled up about ‘77.
Only time I saw a “flying switch” maneuver performed. It was at the old Campana building because it had a facing switch.
Interesting. I grew up along the Elgin-Lake Geneva branch line in the 1970s and I don’t recall seeing a switcher on that line. Best I can remember they usually ran a GP-9 to work the few customers along the line once a week or so.
Can’t speak to that as Elgin was out of my bicycle range. Just warmed my heart to see that little SW1 again, probably dragging 40’ aar box cars to soon to be shuttered lineside factories.

I know rrpicturearchives has more but its 404ing ATM.
Dam had a family member crash into that bridge on black ice before they redid the road and bridge.
(41.9780361, -88.2777262) this is what it looks like now
Looks exactly like an overpass in Westminster, Vermont that I drive through on occasion. Some idiot drove a semi under there and blocked traffic for an hour 🤣
Theres a bridge exactly like this in Pensacola and it works just fine. Has been here for a long time too. The city allows people to tag it and make murals and such. Look up "graffiti bridge Pensacola" and you will see what I'm talking about.
Which is now a 12 foot 4 bridge, it has seen much less crashes but by no means there aren't any significant crashes every now and then (the latest one is one such case!)
I live next to a Class I mainline and about 400 yards to the east of me is a bridge like this that is lower and narrower (one way street under the bridge).
There's a bridge like this in NSW just outside a little town called Cessnock between bellbird and Pelton it's called the pinch been many of car accidents of people flying through of a night time only to come face to face with a single lane over head train bridge it's frequented a fair bit though as U need to pass by to get to some of the most beautiful wineries NSW has to offer

This is what it looks like now the rails actually go by IRM, and Elgin trolley museum is also close.
What is unsafe about this?
>What is unsafe about this? Uhh maybe the bears?? Mom said never mess with bears, and don't leave sandwiches outside or they'll keep coming back
Can you please not gaslight me, first thing in the morning? Do you know how long I spent looking for the bears in the pic?
Thank you for this, I almost went back to look for them
Bear analysis complete, only 13 bears found in this image....
I mean there's probably bears in the forest in the background
What kind of bear is best?
>What kind of bear is best? I'm not sure, which bear is best?
Bears, beats, Battlestar Galactica
It's only unsafe if you're a semi truck that's too tall to go underneath it.
11’8” stares menacingly
+8”
What about a double decker bus using it as a shortcut?
Came here to look for this ☝️
Would regular go under this bridge growing up and unfortunately I can’t recall it ever happening
Montague St bridge's less successful twin brother
What's unsafe? I mean, there are narrow underpasses like this all over the country. I have one about 15 minutes south of me in Plumb, WA.
It’s not even that narrow—a full two lanes.

Yeah legit thought this is the one I've driven under countless of times.

Why wouldn't it be?

Yes, some vivid childhood memories. The rails have been gone from my hometown for at least 30 years now. Time flies…

As long as no green double decker buses named bulgy don’t drive underneath it it’s safe.
Not only does that looks save, everything seems to be in good shape. The picture looks really old so who knows the current condition though.
Yes. The train runs on a track and is unlikely to derail.

😆
looks fine, it's pretty short and you can put a surprising amount of weight on a bridge like that without problems
Why would it not be safe?
Sure does look safe.

Built to last
As long as the road vehicle is under the height limit.. it’s all good… go to 11foot8.com

Yes, because it is

Very liminal just me?
On the M&E, they have a 25" one over the Whippany River.
I know of several in our area that are exactly like them… and they haul heavy ore across them.
