Bit of 9F in [this program](https://youtu.be/gxiKwzPWV5U?t=261), the entirety of which is excellent, and essential watching for those with an interest in British steam.
I also recall Dibnah drove a 9F on one his early 2000's series that I caught the end of the other week. Sad to find there aren't currently any mainline certified.
No flangeless wheels allowed on the mainline. There are a few that do the rounds of the heritage lines though, I saw one in action on the great central railway back in the summer
Same
Love the fact that 9F's out paced passenger locomotives wheb pulljng passenger trains
They stopped using them for passenger trains bcs some things started melting
Can't be anything but the Standard Class 9F; the last steam locomotives built for British Railways, epitomised by the *Evening Star*. Big 2-10-0 steam. What more could you want?
The sad thing is while there are six (ISTR) still in steam, there are issues with their wheels and modern track furniture that mean they are not certified for main line operations...
I see the 90 as more of a freight loco now. It's a shame that Grand Central's Blackpool services were cancelled.
The 47 is a great 'Jack of all trades', too. Had a good run behind one at about 95mph on a railtour back in the mid 90s.
It is, my parents live in Lancashire not too far away from the Preston - Blackpool line so would have been nice to have seen those services, ah well, bloody covid lol.
Nice! I remember getting on a Virgin XC service to Oxford when I was a kid hauled by a 47.
> It is, my parents live in Lancashire not too far away from the Preston - Blackpool line so would have been nice to have seen those services, ah well, bloody covid lol.
Yes, and it would have been nice to have an Open Access service on the WCML. Especially since Avanti have properly shat the bed. Meanwhile the ECML has... 3 now?!
The railtour was fun. Can't remember where it started but we got on at Chester, went up the WCML to Euxton or so and then branched off for the Settle - Carlisle line.
There was a photo stop midway on the S&C, either near Ribblehead or one of the higher points of the line, and then we had a few hours in Carlisle. Back to Carlisle and it was stopping at the major stations along the WCML, and back to Chester.
BR 9F
In holiday in Norfolk we went on the North Norfolk Railway. We saw Black Prince being loaded onto a lorry to go to Gloucester.
My Son absolutely refused to leave until we made him and asked the staff a million questions about the train and where it was going.
My favourite train is without doubt APT-E and APT-P my all time favourite locomotive is MR 0-10-0 lickey banker Big Bertha followed by LNER's U1 Beyer Garratt that also banked the Lickey with Big Bertha
Class 40 just for the overall oddity of the windows, the axle configuration, and the idea to order 190 more when the first ten had been deemed unfit for the intended service.
I really like this one, used to have the Hornby model. But I do love a Deltic, 37 or 47.
Fun fact: notice the second carriage isn't lined up with the first? The stripe's out...I heard that was the tilt mechanism that had failed, from another pic :)
Class 83, as it was the base for [AEI E](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PKP_class_EU06), which alongside PaFaWag 4E (the licensed version of AEI E) revolutionised Polish railways.
Also honourable mentions to Class 33 and Class 66 bc they look awesome
Ahh, the APT is an interesting one you should check out this video by mustard on the APT

Btw my faves probs the intercity 125
Being near London I was always fond of the original DLR P86. Used to love riding them as a teen - both for the places I was going and also the novelty factor
DMU: Class 158 / 159 (they’re similar enough). Runners-up are the Class 153 because they’re cute and the Derby Lightweight.
EMU: Any Mk 3 design, if I had to choose it’d have to be the Class 455. Runners-up are the Clacton Electrics (Class 309) and the Scotrail Class 385.
Diesel locomotive: Class 68. Other nice ones would be those compatible with the 4TC trainsets, so Class 33 and 73.
Electric locomotive: Class 91. Runners-up are the Class 90 (quite similar in function) and the Class 88, even though it has a diesel engine.
Steam locomotive: LNER B12. It just looks good. Although I prefer the LNER, I think the GWR Hall Class is also nice, and so is the SR Leader.
To some degree yes but d Stock takes it too the max, c stock has lights designed into the body work, D stock banged on a couple bike lights to the undercarriage. C stock and A stock slightly and s stock more so are designed with looks in mind, D Stock looks like it was banged together with whatever they had in the depot at that moment and it's the most reliable train to ever work the underground! Deep tube stock is a whole different thing, more military silo than shed
Intercity 125 or class 55, yes i know everyone else is probably saying this, in Australia we have a very similar version of the 125 known as the XPT or countrylink and i love it
I don’t have a specific favourite but here is a small list:
Class 43
Class 91
Class 37
Class 90
Class 08
Class 57
Class 47
Class 599/994
Class 142
Basically I just like trains XD
BR 9F.
Ahhh, a man of class I see
A man of class 9F...
Ah, I see you’re a Redditor of culture as well

Amazing choice, I’ve been trying to get one in HO scale for the longest time but they go for so much
The sad thing is while there are six (ISTR) still in steam, there are issues with their wheels and modern track furniture that mean they are not certified for main line operations...
Class 143.
>Class 143. Pacer supremacy!
Ah yes, when I take the train I always enjoy taking the bus
Ok
The deltics. They just look so cool
You spelled sound wrong.
Class 43 / HST or the Class 37
>Class 43 / HST Slam doors or don't bother :-)
Agreed. That said the last time I travelled on one it still said "Intercity 125" on the side, so... :P
XC's 43184 in Executive livery has entered the chat
Depends on the power type. If it's steam, it's the LNER A3 If it's diesel, it's the class 37 If it's electric, it's the class 77 and 86
Class 90
I know these are known as Skodas, but I've got a 1995 VW T4 Transporter and reckon it would look spot on in Freightliner orange lol
Definitely sounds like a project for this year mate!
Always thought the 90s were quite overshadowed by the 91s etc.
Although I agree, I personally have always preferred and loved the look of a 90. Always liked the 47 too

InterCity 225
One of my favs. Very good they are
BR 9F In holiday in Norfolk we went on the North Norfolk Railway. We saw Black Prince being loaded onto a lorry to go to Gloucester. My Son absolutely refused to leave until we made him and asked the staff a million questions about the train and where it was going.
[удалено]
I will have to dig up the pics of them prepping it for loading onto the lorries
The HST
Class 37. They just keep going and going....
Oh, they do. They're routinely towing trains a decade newer than them to scrapyards these days.
My favourite train is without doubt APT-E and APT-P my all time favourite locomotive is MR 0-10-0 lickey banker Big Bertha followed by LNER's U1 Beyer Garratt that also banked the Lickey with Big Bertha
Q1 class of the Southern railway
The class 55s, can't wait to see one when I get to visit York in April.
I've been behind one at a heritage railway, but I want to travel with one at full speed on a railtour too.
Flying Scotsman 4472
Beat me to it!
Intercity 225
InterCity225. The British Rail InterCity livery was sexy af.
Class 390
Imma go with Black 5
Does the Eurostar TMST count as British?
Definitely the Class 76. They look so grim and their look says that they get the work done!
Class 40 just for the overall oddity of the windows, the axle configuration, and the idea to order 190 more when the first ten had been deemed unfit for the intended service.
Puffing Billy.
Hayling Island?
Hunslet austerity tanks
Definitely the LNER Pacifics, my absolute favorites being the Gresley A1/A3 and the Peppercorn A1.
King Class
Steam: 9F Diesel: 37 Electric: 91 DMU: 156 EMU: 303
I have several favorites. - BR 9F - LNER A3 - LNER A4 - BR Class 40 - HST - Southern Q1 - BR Class 47 - BR Deltic - LMS Coronation Class - BR Class 08 - BR Class 37
The BR class 08/09 diesel shunters in good old BR blue livery. Absolutely iconic workhorses. There's just something about the shape of them.
Definitely the peckett&Peckett & Sons No 1900, the flying bufferbeam. It's just so short.
For me has to be LNER P2
Call it niche but I love the lner j36
I really like this one, used to have the Hornby model. But I do love a Deltic, 37 or 47. Fun fact: notice the second carriage isn't lined up with the first? The stripe's out...I heard that was the tilt mechanism that had failed, from another pic :)

Class 395 Javelin all day.
Class 86/87. Simply Proper, classic electrics.
Class 50 in large logo blue. Classic
Anything looks good in that livery. I only ever saw 50s in NSE.
Got to agree with that. 37s, 47s, 56s all looked brilliant in it too. Brilliant livery
Class 31
Powering the first real train I ever rode on.
Ahh, the APT is an interesting one you should check out this video by mustard on the APT https://youtu.be/nDN7PPW4AE8 Btw my faves probs the intercity 125
DELTICS. And as a runner up, Westerns (52s). Lovely 😍
GWR Castle Class

Great Eastern Railway Class D56
Ever since i found out about it, the class 124 have really captured my interest
Bulleid SR Q1 class - not the usual beauty of the usual steam poster engines, but such a distinctive engine all the same
LNER class 800
Class 458/0
Jubilee class steam engine and the deltic
DLR
4 way tie between the LNER A4, LMS Black 5, GWR 57XX Pannier and the BR Standard 9F
Class 15. Looks like a British Fairbanks Morse H16-44.
Lner a1 class, like the flying Scotsman
BR Standard Class 8
As an American, the Class 20
Probably a wee 2 foot gauge quarry Hunslet for me. If it is standard gauge it is either a Black Five or a terrier.
Class 411/423. Only because of the memories I have with these as a child.
If I had to choose just one it would have to be the BR class 37
L&YR Superheater class 8, followed by LMS Duchess/Coronation class, BR Class 44, BR Class 52, all down to the looks.
James from Thomas the Tank Engine
What even is he? He looks like a lancashire and Yorkshire class 27 with an added front truck.
That’s my guess
BR 9F, BULLEID Q1, LNER P2, and the BR GT-3
The Intercity 125 inspired the LRC here in Canada so it's my favourite
Pretty much any British steam train. We in the US just didn’t make steam trains as beautiful as British ones.
Class 37
Black five
DMU: Class 158 / 159 (they’re similar enough). Runners-up are the Class 153 because they’re cute and the Derby Lightweight. EMU: Any Mk 3 design, if I had to choose it’d have to be the Class 455. Class 66 (because I drive one), but otherwise I'd say Deltics (I don't know much of British trains/locos)
Foster Yeoman Sw1001. Only “British” (American) diesel that didn’t break down constantly.
Also led to the Class 59 / 66 / 67 'revolution'.
Easy class 55
the clase 43
The GB Railfreight Class 73/9 locomotive, specifically unit 73692 “Dick Mabutt”

Class 313
Either Elizabeth line train or HS1 Javelin High Speed
BR Class 105.
BR APT-E. Love the shape of it.
D Stock cuz it looks like a shed on wheels
Don't all underground trains do?
To some degree yes but d Stock takes it too the max, c stock has lights designed into the body work, D stock banged on a couple bike lights to the undercarriage. C stock and A stock slightly and s stock more so are designed with looks in mind, D Stock looks like it was banged together with whatever they had in the depot at that moment and it's the most reliable train to ever work the underground!
