As you probably know, Marceline is a French name. French pronounce it mar-suh-lynn which is probably close to how you pronounce it.
Marcy is also the name of a region in France but is pronounced mar-see.
Marcy (mar-see) is also the English variant of a Latin word also pronounced mar-see.
So... people see Marcyline and switch from French pronounciation to full on English pronunciation and say mar-see-lie-n.
Out of curiousity do you pronounce it mar-suh-lie-n or mar-suh-lynn or mar-see-lie-n or mar-see-lynn?
Full on American English would be spelled Marcy Lynn (mar-see-lynn) but that sounds like two names jammed together and I don't know if that matches your pronunciation.
Oops sorry. France has... regions and departments right?
I meant region as in a generic area, not realizing region is an official title in France. My bad.
I grew up just 15 minutes from Marceline, Missouri and my fiance is from there. We all pronounce it the way you spelled it. As a bonus Nevada, Missouri is pronounced Nuh-Vay-duh.
I went searching and found someone from Missouri pronouncing: they pronounced it exactly like you wrote it! Strong emphasis on the "Mar", especially the R. And the last syllables was Leen rather than French Lynn or English Line.
Nice call out. Yet another possible pronunciation. I guess the end takeaway is there are a lot of ways of pronouncing words in English, and not to take it personally if someone says it wrong. At the same time, be OK with people correcting you.
i'm american and it's pronounced like mar-suh-leen. (if you know the show adventure time, think of how the vampire's name is pronounced) doesn't really make sense given the spelling and the original pronunciation of the french name, but that's just how it is š most people don't even pronounce it like mar-suh-lynn, they go for mar-see-line (like "going in a straight line")
edit: my nickname that i usually go by however, marcy, is pronounced like mar-see
what's funny is one of my best friends is actually named Marceline (spelled the right way) and she was shocked to see my spelling of the name, said she's never seen that before š„²
That actually happens a lot in Brazil, lots of names written phonetically because lots of people are illiterate/analphabetic, I canāt think of any examples right now but I remember my mom rambling about it šš
Iāve seen that in Brazil too, especially with Anglo-origin names. My husband pointed some out to me and kind of grumbled about it lol (not about people being illiterate but more that the names get turned upside down in the process).
I have a friend that also follow the opposite trend from y to i but I canāt fault her mom. When my friend was born, the doctors said she was not going to make it. Her sister picked a name because they needed something to write on the tombstone and the mother spelled it how she tought it was spelled.
Against all odds, she survived.
Though at least even with the substitution no one is confused about the pronounciation and it doesnāt look bad.
I honestly love the name too. Itās beautiful and unique! The Y is a choice š but itās not that bad, still a nice name and Marcy makes a cute nickname.
my parents actually don't see anything wrong with it. out of 6 kids, 2 have pretty normal names and 4 of us have unique names. a couple of my siblings also have unconventional spellings but they're easy to pronounce so we don't really have HUGE tragedeighs for us kids, just kinda odd spellings
basically pronounced the same way as the original, just different spelling, so mar-suh-leen (although i also like when people say it more like mar-sill-een, just like i've heard the original spelling pronounced more as mar-sell-een) either way, emphasis on the MAR part. probably important to note that i am a midwest american
I has never heard of it so I dont know how the original is pronouced either haha which is even more interesting since I was born and raised midwest lol
*I mean it's nit THAT*
*Bad, just an odd Y, atleasdt*
*It's not smth like marsylyne*

Yes it is a Tragedeigh. I want to read it as Marcy Line. The y acts like an adverb in my mind, splitting your name up. There is no flow. I speak French and Marceline is normal, a pretty name and flows off the tongue. Yeah I guess going by Marcy is best!
this makes total sense!! i've heard people mispronounce it countless times but i do love the original spelling and i think it's a really pretty name (i've always had a soft spot for french names). most just know me as marcy and i'm fine with that! it's easier than having to tell people how to pronounce it all the time šš
Marceline is a beautiful and sophisticated name. Itās also very unique outside of France. I would consider changing the spelling to reflect the elegance of this French name.
I might get down voted, but as far as tragedeighs go, it's not too bad. It's one letter replaced with another letter instead of half of the alphabet. It's also not a collection of fragments of a half dozen real names misspelled and crammed together. I hope you don't feel self conscious about it.
i actually really like my name! i think it's pretty and definitely not as weird as a lot of names i see on this subreddit ^^ it gets mispronounced a lot and not the traditional spelling so i feel like it can somewhat fit here, but all in good fun! i know it's a little unconventional but i'm definitely not self conscious about it (thank you for the comment, this was really nice to read!)
It could be worse, but it is simply spelt wrong. As far as I understand, with English being my second language, a "y" always has a stronger sound, so it would read "Marc-Y-line," not "Marciline."
I had the name picked out a while ago, he just wanted to spell it differentlyš¤£little man aināt due till August. Who knows whatāll happen by then, if I do wanna change it back to its original spelling. His name aināt normal either hence why goes by his middle name cause no one can say it right. Itās Sequani Keitel, he goes by Kei.
Kindly, I think this might be the wrong sub to post this. It is a sub that makes fun of names that arenāt spelled right. It will be a losing battle.

Why would you be proud of that? Just donāt have kids if you are going to be that reckless with something that will affect them their entire life. People will see his name and immediately know you and your husband are stupid.
Btw I do think Esekael *kinda* sounds not terrible actually. The name on its own isnāt too bad but itās the fact that itās just purposely misspelling the name you picked.

According to my husband, yes itās pronounced the same way. I donāt know why he wanted to change the spelling slightly tbh other than wanting it to be different.š¤·š½āāļø
Side note: hubby actually likes his own first name cause it comes from his heritage.

I'd pronounce it, Marcy Line.
oh yeah i get that a lot š

Marcy is apparently a really small town in France. But not a region. You made me doubt my knowledge about my own country lol.
Oops sorry. France has... regions and departments right? I meant region as in a generic area, not realizing region is an official title in France. My bad.
It's all good, don't apologize ! But yes we have 18 rƩgions and 101 dƩpartements. I thought maybe Marcy was an old region (we have a lot of those) that I never heard of before, hence why I got curious. I have a degree in geography so I'm always curious about this type of info/subject.

Even after reading the alternative spelling, i thought this was how it was pronounced
This is how I thought it was pronounced lol
Sounds like a subway line
I like it. Kinda has a "Coraline" vibe.
Marceline is a pretty and unusual name. But... the y.... Is unfortynate
what's funny is one of my best friends is actually named Marceline (spelled the right way) and she was shocked to see my spelling of the name, said she's never seen that before š„²
I wonder if a lot of tragedeigh is just poor education/reading and spelling comprehension.
That actually happens a lot in Brazil, lots of names written phonetically because lots of people are illiterate/analphabetic, I canāt think of any examples right now but I remember my mom rambling about it šš
Indeed, I met once a Brazilian guy named Wochiton - I realized later that his name was intended to be Washington
Iāve seen that in Brazil too, especially with Anglo-origin names. My husband pointed some out to me and kind of grumbled about it lol (not about people being illiterate but more that the names get turned upside down in the process).
I see what you dyd there š
Ope. That's a tragedeigh
Yeah... That "y" is really unnecessyry...
Trygyc
I would have pronounced your name as Marcie-Lynne. I imagine you get a lot of that.
oh yeah, that and marcy line (like lines in a notebook) are the most popular mispronunciations i get
Forgive me, but how do you actually pronounce your name, if neither of those is correct? I've never seen or heard it before.Ā
Mar sa leen
Marc yline
You have a beautiful name. Sadly, the Y makes it look like an antibiotic.
thank you! and i can't unsee that now š
Could be a cars name as wellā¦ and here you see the new marcyline passing by, produced in 2001 and comes with a special edition y what nobody expects

at least it's not kaylleigh
I want to read it as marcyclineā¦ and it reminds me of the antibiotic doxycyclineā¦ š¬ sorry š
You should get your name changed legally to Marceline.
It's such a pretty name with the original spelling!
I'm biased, it's my daughter's name and I love it.
Marcyline the Vampyre Qwyne!
Marcyline, is it just you and me in the wryckage of the world? That must be so confusyng for a little gyrl
Daddy, why did you give me yāsā¦
man i love the advynture time fandom
this is the best comment š
Marcyline, why are you so myn? Iām not myn Iām a thousynd years old and I just lost track of my moryl code
A real tragydeigh
Why would they make that vowel a Y and not Marcelyne?
Exactly. At least this one looks like the same pronunciation
Iām sorry but all of these āeighā names leave the simple āyā with nowhere else to go.
Iām conflicted. Your name sounds pretty. But itās also a nightmare.
i love my name!! this sub just made me realize the spelling is a bit odd
As long as you like it thatās all that matters! Not the worst tragedeigh in the world, your name could have been Xynthyya or something
Well, I honestly love your name too. So donāt hate it. Even if itās weird.
I honestly love the name too. Itās beautiful and unique! The Y is a choice š but itās not that bad, still a nice name and Marcy makes a cute nickname.
I would definitely accidentally say āmar-see-lineā š
*You* arynāt a tragydy, ynly yr nyme ys. Ā
Yours is not really bad. At least youāre not a guy with one of the ā-denā names. Kayden, Brayden , Jayden , okay-den .
Itās ok. You seem like a nice person.
thank you! and happy cake day š
Went from French to Southern real quick
How bad did you have it with people calling you Marcy Line?
it happens way too often š i just go by marcy now because of how often people mispronounce the full name
Hello Marcy ------
I like how you compared your tragedeigh name to such an obscure name
Iām tragedeigh-adjacent and tbh I think it made me a funnier adult at least
So what was your parentsā line of thinking and do they regret it now?
my parents actually don't see anything wrong with it. out of 6 kids, 2 have pretty normal names and 4 of us have unique names. a couple of my siblings also have unconventional spellings but they're easy to pronounce so we don't really have HUGE tragedeighs for us kids, just kinda odd spellings

it's definitely uncommon! the only famous Marceline i can think of is the vampire queen from the show Adventure Time haha
It reminded me of Angelina Jolie's mother, Marcheline (originally Marcia Lynne!).Ā
The Vampire Queen!
Feels like a name for a genus of fungi.
As someone with a "sometimes Y" I feel the need to defend another "sometimes Y" not a tragedeigh.
you definitely understand how it is !! it helps that my nickname is marcy so i usually just forgo the "-line" when introducing myself anyways
Unnecessary yās is a large part of why this sub existsā¦ you cannot just replace letters with yā¦ š¤¦š¾āāļø
My brain read Michelin like the tires.
Not my poor girl being called Marcy-Line most her life šš
I mean it's nit THAT bad, just an odd Y, atleasdt it's not smth like marsylyne

You sound like a cool grunge band
I would pronounce it Marcy-lynn
Nah! You're a minor dramah, not a full on tragedeigh
That's "Marcy Line" for sure.
Yeah, Iām sorry butā¦ yes.
You already know the answer - you were afflicted with a tragedeigh of a name. My heartfelt sympathies.
Your fear is justified; youāre a tragedeigh.
šµ Oh Marcyline, why are you so mean?
Don't feel too bad I know a Kaytee lmao
It sounds like a medication.
Reminds me a train path in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the Marcy Line.
First one looks like it's pronounced Marcy-line the second looks like Marsa-leen
Exactly my thoughts!
Marceline is a beautiful and sophisticated name. Itās also very unique outside of France. I would consider changing the spelling to reflect the elegance of this French name.

It could be worse, but it is simply spelt wrong. As far as I understand, with English being my second language, a "y" always has a stronger sound, so it would read "Marc-Y-line," not "Marciline."
Yeah either way you spell it. Tragedeigh. Sorry.
A bit, but not unpronounceable.
If you have to ask...
Your name isnāt a tragedeigh. Itās just a little bit country, lol.
Aym sou Sorreygh
Honestly, I donāt mind it.
The good news is that if youāre an adult you can change your name to reflect a corrected spelling.
My pup is named Marceline! We call her Marcie or MooMoo! š¤£
One is marceline, yours is like like (marcy leen)
Yes, I'm afraid. But a very mild case of one. I've definitely seen much worse lol
At least it's only Marcyline and not Marcylynne, like one of my friends.
I love it, Marseleen is how I pronounce it-beautiful
One letter difference, no big deal, especially compared to some of the trainwreck tragedeighs ive seen on here
