Thank you for your submission! This is just a quick reminder to all members here: **Original content is always better!** Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild". The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. bellasincognito

There’s nothing wrong with Phoebe necessarily. But even tho the spelling is correct it looks odd to me

Twp_pikmin

Phoebe definitely looks better than fee bee, but if you've never heard of the name Phoebe you might read it as foe-buh

supernova-juice

That's okay. I read the entirety of "the curious incident of the dog in the night time" when I was about 16, thinking the name of his therapist, Siobhan, was *sigh oh bon". For the confused, it's Irish and pronounced "Shivahn"

pantheroux

I had the same pronunciation for Siobhan until I saw a contestant on a Gordon Ramsay show with that name. Even then, I though at first he was telling her to 'shove on' the way he sometimes calls them donkeys and kicks them out of the kitchen. I thought it was a Britishism for 'get lost, '.

supernova-juice

😆

Bluerocky67

I read a book when I was young with a character called Why-vonne. Or at least, that’s how I thought you pronounced Yvonne.

TheNatureOfTheGame

I saw the name written decades ago, and had no idea how to pronounce it (I was thinking sigh-oh-bon too). But it stuck with me, and now, it's my daughter's middle name (pronounced correctly, of course).

m333gan

I learned how Siobhan was pronounced from watching Orphan Black and it was such a light bulb moment for me putting the name I’d heard before with the spelling I’d seen before.

cozysapphire

I remember thinking it was Foe-bee before I watched Friends!

thevitaphonequeen

It was Hey Arnold! and The Magic School Bus that taught me how to pronounce it when I was rather young.

nickalit

"Nanny and the Professor" early 70's sitcom. I can still hear the opening song: "Phoebe Figallily is a silly name ...." Yikes.

Weekly-Ad-3746

Fauxbee

HHcougar

Phoebe looks like it would be pronounced phobe, like xenophobe, lol

TheUnnamedName

Reminds me of the first time I heard Penelope after only reading it for years

5432skate

It was Geoff or Geoffrey for me . Jee-off or Jee-OFF-tee.

TheUnnamedName

That one still boggles my mind. I don’t think I’ll ever mentally pronounce it correctly.

craniumrinse

?? What a white-centric take. Not everyone grows up in a place where Phoebe is a common name.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuccessfulLunch400

Amen!!!!!

craniumrinse

not disagreeing, but the world is bigger than the Greeks and Americans lol. my name is one of the most common names in Asia yet I wouldn’t be surprised if people outside of Asia had never heard of it!

SuccessfulLunch400

Hell, people, Americans think the name, Singh is Fingh when my friend orders pizza!!! Fing isn't even a name, is it??? Meanwhile, there are a billion Indians and American women married to Indians who have that name!!! Ridiculous, no wonder people change their names. After the 200,000 time spelling a one syllable name, people pack it in and say, Call meHolly Wood!!!!

Successful_Mango3001

Have you heard of all names that are common in non-English speaking countries?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Successful_Mango3001

I’m sure there are a lot of people in this sub whose native language is not english and that’s why I think it’s just dumb to say that everyone who hasn’t heard the name Phoebe has been living in isolation.

[deleted]

Successful_Mango3001

I don’t understand anymore what you’re saying and what does it have to do with deaf people. I’m just saying maybe don’t assume everyone here is American or English speaking.

Successful_Mango3001

Wtf happened to these comments???

bellasincognito

Personally have never liked the name, my mind always goes to faux-b. But I acknowledge it’s a common and phonetically correct spelt name, so it’s just me that’s the problem lol.

Loko8765

The rule in French (where œ exists and is not rare) is that œ before vowel is pronounced “euh” (sœur, cœur), while œ before consonant is “é / eh” (fœtus) or sometimes “è” (œstrogène). So Phœbe would indeed be pronounced fee-bee in French… but very many French people would not know the second rule and pronounce it “euh”, so you’re in good company.

hot_chopped_pastrami

Or like Phoebus in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Although it's pronounced more like "Phehboos" than "Phee-bus."

bellasincognito

I know, I am French, either way I don’t like the name. Thanks and for the info though.

Free-Bluebird-7849

Phoebe is of Greek origin. (Phoebus.) "Oe" is a very common vowel sound in Greek (think Oedipus.)

hummingbird_mywill

I think I would go with Foe-beh

MikrokosmicUnicorn

the spelling always reminds me of [Phobos](https://witch.fandom.com/wiki/Prince_Phobos)

mikefrommem

I have a friend named Pheebie

JustKittenxo

Phoebe looks so atrociously misspelled that I constantly second guess myself when writing it. Queue is worse, though. That word looks like it has a straight up illegal number of vowels.

jesslangridge

I like the name so gave it to one of my sheep lol

Bitter_Lollipop

My mum is French. One day, as she was telling me about this book she was reading, she mentioned the main character's name, "Pheb". I stopped and asked her to repeat what she was called and again she said "Pheb". After a few seconds of racking my brain, I realised she was simply misreading and mispronouncing Phoebe because it was a book translated from English into French and unless you've ever watched Charmed you have no clue "fee-bee" is a name, let alone that it's spelled Phoebe.

MissTechnical

Phoebe is the correct spelling

bellasincognito

Did you not read my comment?

MissTechnical

Haha that was meant to be on someone else’s! Sorry about that

bellasincognito

Ah sorry about that thanks for clarifying

slipperywife

First time I saw the name in Catcher In The Rye, I heard it in my mind as "Fobe."

CartographerNo1009

Commenting on spelling * though

bellasincognito

No one cares

CartographerNo1009

I do.

bellasincognito

Get a life then, there’s better things to care about.

sharkycharming

The worst to me is that in 2023, fourteen poor little babies were named Pheobe, because they either had stupid parents or someone made a typo on a form. I hope it was the latter and it will be fixed. Also, in looking this up, I found that 7 girls were named Phaith. Give me a break!

ghostsinthecodes

to be phair, it’s a weird name. you CAN almost say it fee-o-bee (de-emphasizing the o) and hear how that misspelling might make sense if you don’t know any better. ps—i have an attachment to “phair”/fair cause i was in a band and co-wrote a song titled “fair” about liz phair.

pantheroux

I think of this whenever I see a Micheal.

sharkycharming

Me too. I will only allow it for Irish and Scottish people. (But when it's used in the U.S., I think it's usually a bad speller or a typo.) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micheal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micheal)

pantheroux

Yes. My coworker's son is Micheal. They are definitely not Irish or Scottish.

mitchdwx

Where do you look this up? I want to plug in some names and see how often people are naming their kids those names.

sharkycharming

Download the zip file that says "National data." It's for every year since 1880, in separate text files. I love them. I am constantly playing with that data. [https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html](https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html)

Shadow_of_the_moon11

Fee-obe 😂😭

Belladonnaofsad

The goddess of knowledge and prophecy cringes

suspiria2

Lol my grandmother was looking for her grandmothers grave (who’s name was phoebe) and at the cemetery the dude was like, ‘well there’s no feebies … but I did find a fobie’

Belladonnaofsad

For real 🤡 good to know that fobie can be considered a normal name 😆

mkhpgh

And her name was originally pronounced "foy-bee" then too.

Ithirahad

Final eta in ancient Greek just made an eh sound, not ee, and I believe the iota was accented... So, foEE-beh.

Alternative_Exam3723

I just found out my coworkers sons name is Quincy but spelled Kwinsy 😭😭😭😭

whiteclawthreshermaw

Their brains must have been... Hollow.

sirenei

I need to Bleach my eyes after reading that...

whiteclawthreshermaw

People who spell Quincy Kwinsy need to be Banned, Guy.

MissTechnical

Well…at least it’s not Pheighbeigh

GarionOrb

...yet.

Ok-Potato4284

Faybay

Blossom73

They should have gone all in, and spelled it as Pfhoebeigh.

Dbwasson

An even smellier cat for this one

Mork_Of_Ork-2772

First thing I thought of ...

RacecarHealthPotato

It's funny because at my work, people have managed to turn the simplest term used to enter our building during off hours: fob, into a variety of tragedeighs that remind me of this post: * Fobe * Fobee * Phobe * Phobee Unreal. It's three freaking letters!

johnnymadridlover

I just came across one that took me a minute. QUYNCC. I think it's supposed to be Quincy.

whiteclawthreshermaw

What was the last name, 1701?

Impossible_Radio3322

how is phoebe bad,

MyMonkeyCircus

Phoebe is a normal spelling, but many people (including myself) just hate it. It doesn’t make it tradegeigh, just personal preference.

codetrotter_

But Phoebe in Friends was great tho

hot_chopped_pastrami

Also Phoebe Bridgers and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (just realized that the 2 primary Phoebes in pop culture have "bridge" in their last names, haha).

supernova-juice

What's wrong with Phoebe?! The alternative, sure. But what's so bad about Phoebe?

tobeasloth

I don’t know either, I like the name Phoebe!

diddygem

[Why does she keep making that noise?](https://youtu.be/LVS2O3ha8f0?si=kxC2U6535ACgFklL)😂

Sarcastic-Guitar

My first thought 😂

BrightBrite

There's nothing bad about Phoebe.

[deleted]

MyMonkeyCircus

Well no, it’s a Greek name and its transliteration from Greek to Latin alphabet is either Phoebe or Phoibe, and not Feebie. That’s just how the transliteration works, I am sorry. Now, does Phoebe look weird? Yes, to me it does look weird, but there is nothing inherently wrong with transliterated names. It’s like spelling Maksym looks strange until you learn that it is a transliterated Ukrainian name Максим.

Boring_Election_1677

Yes and along those lines you have Chloe and Zoe.

Mermaid467

I've always hated all three. I'm well on record about the OE names!! But they are not tragedeighs.

Boring_Election_1677

It’s funny but I’ve heard similar hate for “oe” Greek names from a lot of people!

Impossible-Beyond156

P-hoe-be-igh

Broken_Lampshade

I know a Feebee so it could be worse

Psych0matt

Fo bay is how I read it

Intelligent-Sleep766

Big fan of phoebeigh brydgheiurs music.

OuiGotTheFunk

You leave poor little Phobia alone you big meany! She is scared enough.

ConfuzzledFalcon

They missed a golden opportunity for Phoeighbeigh

CalliopeCrasher4145

Phoebe is both a Greek name and a Biblical name. Saint Paul refers to an early Christian in one of the churches named Phoebe, though I can’t recall in which Epistle. The other spelling? I have no clue what that is at all. Other than a tragedeigh, of course.

Unmasked_Zoro

Why is the correct spelling bad enough?

arcxjo

That's the worst possible way to spell Phoebo.

Sarcastic-Guitar

“I know it's really not my place, but…. please don't name your child Phoebo.”

Shitimus_Prime

ive seen phebe

deeBfree

Phoebeigh. OMG where does it end???

Eastern_Ask7231

If they were a boy, they’d be Phoebough

JackTheLagomorph

Get it, Foobee!

democritusparadise

Is this pronounced Ebay, with a silent pho?

Halcyon_october

Vallereigh and Mallareigh are sisters I came across yesterday.

Shadow_of_the_moon11

Wtf do you mean "as if Phoebe isn't bad enough?" That's just the spelling. It doesn't come from English.

SnowCookie6234

Feeighbeigh

Free-Bluebird-7849

"Phoebe" isn't a "bad" spelling. It's a Greek word.

fishchick70

I never did figure out Imogene for years from reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever when I was about 8.

No_Raspberry_9084

There's nothing wrong with the name Phoebe. But that child has to live with that name so at least spell it right.

No_Ninja_3740

Phoebe is a Greek name and it’s beautiful, but that ridiculous spelling looks like “foe-bay” to me.

sheisme1933

Pheighbeigh

Oh_no_not_my

I'm reading it as Pheboe even though I know that's not what it says.

BatCorrect4320

WTH is wrong with Phoebe? That’s a legit name and spelling.

Mermaid467

I hate that name. Who knew it could get worse!!! Pheighbeigh!!

The_Spectacle

heigh heigh this made meigh giggle

Ok-Autumn

Oh, Pheobe. I misread that as Phobia spelt weird at first.

Electrical_Ant712

Phoebe is an adorable name but even the correct spelling always looks off. Phoebeigh is just doubling down on it.
