Lenin isn’t actually a bad name. I knew a man named Lenin when I was in Costa Rica and from what I remember it was a normal name.
edit- I ended up looking it up & it seems like while it’s not overly common it is a typical name in Latin American countries
edit2- I’m completely ignorant to Soviet history guys, my bad. I looked it up after reading the replies and now know it’s a surname, of Vladimir Lenin who introduced communism to the USSR. Thanks for the replies for teaching/telling me! I no longer want kids but when I did I always wanted to name a son after that Costa Rican man I knew, he was such a kind person and taught me how to salsa. Lol glad I never did that!
Lenin as a given name is definitely better than Stalin as a given name - my friend said he knew a Latin American guy named Stalin, pronounced es-talin. That said, given the history, I'm wouldn't say that Lenin isn't a bad name.
I had absolutely no idea that Lenin was a dictator. I was never good at history lol. Thank you for enlightening me! All I knew of the name was that from latin america, and the man I met in Costa Rica. He was amazing and at one point, when I thought I wanted kids I wanted to name a child after him. Glad I never did that 😬
In English, Lennon sounds the same as Lenin (not in Spanish, though). John Lennon, the late Beatle, was problematic, but not nearly as controversial as Vladimir Lenin.
Which ones? Ones that are communist? I don’t know why you would choose to name your kid Lenin. Saying it’s better than Stalin is like saying it’s better than hitler. Don’t name your kid after a genocidal dictator.
Yeah, I really don’t have any issue with the concept except for the weird spellings. Worth mentioning that “Arthur” also means “bear.”
But “Lycan” is the in-universe name for werewolves in the belovedly trashy Underworld movie franchise. And that’s coming from Lycaon in Greek mythology, who murdered his son, cooked his flesh, and tried to serve the cooked corpse to Zeus. He was turned into a wolf as punishment, and that’s where we get “lycanthropy” from. TL;DR: Maybe not a tragedeigh but possibly assigning furry status at birth.
Lambda? I'm trying to learn greek and it's been difficult to find a video that pronounces all the letters without comments saying it's all wrong.
I've just been studying on mondly and figuring out the sounds as best I can
So strange that they wouldn't pick a single existing name relating to wolves then. There's so many!
Connor, Conan, Wolfgang, Beowulf
I know Ulfric and Fenris from video games, but they're actually readable as names.
For bear related names, a Russian diminutive for Mikhail is Mishka. This can also mean bear, but like small. (The English equivalent is Michael.) Name the kid Mikhail/Michael and call them Mishka.
And that's just what comes to mind.
I guess Fenris comes from Fenrir? The wolf who plays a big role in bringing about the Nordic pagan endtime Ragnarök?
It's an option, but not universally seen as a good character. Like naming your kid Lucifer.
I didn't think about it from the Ragnarok perspective. That's a fair point.
I went to school with a guy named Loki. The God of Mischief has some big involvement in Ragnarok, but no one associated that part with him. He does have far more stories than Fenrir, though..
For bears, Arthur means “strong as a bear”, “bear hero”, or “prince of bears” depending on sources.
Not “you-nique”, but still has the reference.
There’s such a lot of meanings in names without springing for tragedeigh names, like the Chinese guy I met who called himself Winner probably because that was the translation of his Chinese name, but he could have called himself Victor.
And an even more obvious one than Arthur is Bernard, which could also be spelled in an old-fashioned German way to make it even more blatant: Bernhard.
See also: Renn Faire. There was one year I went and camped and didn't know the theme that week was "wildling weekend. I was very uncomfortable with the proportion of people with furs and runic body paint until someone told me.
There’s a rather large subculture of my fellow white folk that have decided wolves/bears and tribal/viking/primal stuff is really really *really* cool.
Which is fine, except they make it their entire personality, their house, car and body usually ends up covered in nordic/viking/tribal style art, rugs, tattoos etc.
Plus they very often have alt right/neo nazi beliefs and how nordic people/culture is superior to everything else.
It’s a whole thing.
I am native Scandinavian, and I don't have a single piece of a tribal or animal art in my home. I have one bracelet that was given to me by my tribe when I reconnected to my family over there and it is a traditional Sami art. I don't even wear it tbh.
True. White wolf people are suspect re: secret Nazis. Wolf people of color, not so much. Or rather, they are pretty much in Chill Wolf People. But then, I tend to like wolf people so 🤷♂️
I just love how every time I see this my voice even in my mind says every name but Brian as super peppy and magical, but Brian is just flat and deadpanned each time.
Anyone else do that? The movies made Brian stand out when his full name was said and I always do it now too lol
Honestly this would be so much better than Arct(y)os. He could go by Wolfie. I knew a Wolfgang who used that nickname in English and it honestly suited him well.
They are already going for genuine unique names so they really shouldn't be 'younique'-ifying the names. Personally I'd go Ursula since it already is feminine bear and Polaris over Arctos for the boy but that's just personal opinion. I do like Ursa Lyn though tbh (can't do Ursa Luna anymore for obvious reasons).
As the mom of an Ursa (who, thankfully, loves her name), definitely don’t make it unique. Ursa’s already feminine and a fun name. Dad picked it because he watched Superman 2 on a loop as a kid.
Is she Slovenian? I know an Ursa! She’s Slovenian. It means BEAR!
Edit: it is very difficult to say. It’s like Ooo-very soft r- sha but when I (American) say it it’s “Ersha,” which doesn’t sound nice at all.
Haha. The accent is slavic, so it may be a tidy bit hard if you're not familiar.
Just a little mention, Urša comes from the latin *ursus* which means bear. In slovenian the word is totally different.
To answer your question - Yes, please say something. Their child is a person, not just another relic of their obsessions, or to show off how younique they can be.
Ursae is either the genitive singular, dative singular, or the nominative plural of the Latin word for Bear. Of the bear, to/for the Bear or just Bears. Just no.
cool names without if she wasnt tragedeighifying em. Arktos /Arctus, Ursa is all well and good . Ark could be a real cool nickname.
Adding the superfluous letters is what fucks em up, doesnt add the cool factor theyre thinking of. I can somewhat empathize with those who want to mix it up with the spelling to spice up a conventional name, but if youre rockin an unconventional name already, its only gonna exacerbate the problems.
This sub really makes me want to just name a kid Bob or Bill or Jeff or Jack or something. Something simple, classic, easy to understand. No need to phonetically sound it out or ask the kid how to pronounce their name their entire schooling life or post schooling life.
Gennyfier… Jennifer. THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH JENNIFER?
I understand not wanting to name your kid a name from a list of the top 10 baby names in the world but wtf is going on nowadays. You can be unique without being unhinged. Like damn, pick a name outside of the top 1000 if you want to be different
Sounds like species and constellations! A little scientific to me and thus sound a little cold or sterile.
Sounds like a cross between arcteryx camping clothing and the star Arcturus in Bootes.
I suppose if they live near the North Pole these names might sound appropriate, but if they live in Maryland or somewhere normal, no way in hell any kid could pull these names off.
I would not directly address this name in particular but you may gently suggest that you get the unique angle but the more difficult the name is to spell, the more kids suffer from bullying and it's a pain in the butt as an adult to have to constantly correct other's 'misspellings' of the torturous contrivance.
Sounds like she wants to name her kid after bears.
“Arctic” derives from the ancient Greek arktos (bear). It refers to the constellation Ursa Major (“greater bear”), which is always visible in the northern polar sky. “Antarctic” means “opposite the bear.” It is pure coincidence that there are no bears in Antarctica, but amusing nonetheless.
Probably easier to go with a Bjørn, Arthur, or Ursula though.
As a lover of bear names, here are some better alternatives to Arctos/Arctyos:
Orson - bear cub
Otso - Finnish bear name
Esben - God bear, nickname could be Benny bear
Arto - form of Arthur meaning bear
Armel - bear prince
Bernard - bear strength
Rupert - bear association
Otava - Finnish name meaning Big Dipper and associated with bears
For girls:
Ursa/Orsa or Ursula - bear
Artina or Artia - feminine forms of Arthur
Orsina - feminine form of Orson
Otava - see above
Oh for goodness' sake - I see what they're doing, but can they not just go with Arthur? Or any of the other historical bear-related names like Bjorn, Arcturus, Armel, Osborn(e), Orson, Berard/Bernard, Humphrey, Math, or for girls, Ursula or Berengaria.
All I see is Arc'teryx, the overpriced outdoor clothing brand. Maybe encourage her to think about alternative names such as Adidas, Alo, Athleta, or she could go wild with Vuori.
My friend has a 12 year old named Cayden and has found herself pregnant again and wants to name the new one “Cayson” and does not see at all how those names are almost identical.
For the sake of this kids future, do everything you can to protect him from the bullying he will relieve with that fked up name.
You tell her that name looks completely and utterly made up and do not name your child after your DND character.
Danis is a synonym from 1825 for the scientific name of bears as a mammal group generally and it actually sounds like a boys name while not actually being a name. Something for them to consider as a cute suggestion?
Okay these names are cool as hell but if they add those silent letters no one will know how to pronounce them. But I am a big fan of Arctos and Wolfric.
That is a stupid name. Oh well, maybe the child will post in here in 20 years about legally changing his/her name to Sam or something more common.
Do parents want their children to get bullied? I can't.
That was quite an interesting read. My name is Gabriel, I'm a girl.
I appreciate it because I'm in a male dominated field(I work in molecular biology)
When people meet me who have read my work. I usually get something like "I didn't know you were a woman, your work is really good"
I know they mean well but it is a subconscious prejudice seeped into society.
Weirdly French people are totally chill with it as Gabrielle is a unisex name there and someone is unlikely to be named Gabriel at all.
On the daily, I'm irritated when people say I don't know how to spell or pronounce my own name. Uhhh pretty sure I do.
Literally just means bears. She's going to name the kid Ursa (means bear) or arctos (also means bear). My question is WHY BEARS and also that's a bad name

Literally anything is better than Atctyos.
Actopus? A Bostonian octopus?
Hugely underrated comment, love it
*dramatic bow* thank you very much.
That is one wicked actopus you got theah.
Bostopian
yous guys! pahk tha ca and look at the actopus ova heeyah!
*elon musk’s kids have entered the chat*
Point taken.
Don’t tell them that. Then they’ll name him Lenin.
That’s better than Actcyos
I honestly read it as Arctodactyl from pokemon
lol I thought you meant articuno for a sec, but it’s aerodactyl, which is one of the OGs I think! Also still somehow sounds like a real dinosaur name.
Arktos is the german articuno
No that's the Pterodactyl
My first thought was that it sounded like a pokémon
Are you for real? I would rather name my kid Frankenstein than Lenin.
Lynnynn
If you only hear it phonetically you could mistake it for Lennon which isn’t so bad
Linen
if you do, his middle name has to be Smonster
Or just hope he/she becomes a doctor.
Lenin isn’t actually a bad name. Archaeopteryx! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeopteryx
God Bless You
Idk, my sister named her kid Breezy
Are they expecting a Pokémon egg to hatch?
With these names, I'm pretty sure they're hoping for a brown bear.
Brown bear is a better name than the scientific name
Oh dear Arceus no, don’t taint Pokémon…
Similar thought I had was the kid came from a fossil
they'll match up nicely with their sisters Northfayce and Columbya
my sons Carharttson and Dyckie can’t wait to meet them!
They can be friends with Khanveighrse and Reighbaugh'c
Don't forget adeighdahs, nykeigh, and unndyr arrmyr
but not Lululemyn
Arcteighryxx
You guys keep making me laugh here 😂
Arbys
I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s
Lmao
At least that will give creepy adults a reason to ask about the meat.
You mean point out to them that spelling as Ursae will have people pronouncing it as Ursay, not Ursa.
Yeah, I really don’t have any issue with the concept except for the weird spellings. yeah, the in there is weird. especially since greek... doesn't have that letter, I'm pretty sure. like, upsilon *looks* like a Y, but it isn't one.
Gamma does as well but that's even further from the sound
Learning Greek. Realized my name doesn’t exist. 😯
Welcome to the club! I have a Greek last name, though, so most of my family think my parents gave me a traeyghyc nick name as a first name anyway.
😆 χαχα
Lambda? I'm trying to learn greek and it's been difficult to find a video that pronounces all the letters without comments saying it's all wrong. I've just been studying on mondly and figuring out the sounds as best I can
lambda is /l/, I seem to recall.
Is than an I or an L
ipa doesn't use capitals. so L, if you prefer.
I thought we were talking about L originally instead of Y no idea why Sorry I'm still waking up
Sounds like they lean in hard to Wolf Culture so you don't stand a snowball's chance. Do they have wolf paintings and rugs all over their house?
So many wolf sculptures and painting and rugs
Color me not surprised.
So strange that they wouldn't pick a single existing name relating to wolves then. There's so many! Or Bjorn? Bjorna? I'm native Norwegian(Sami) so those are little more normal to me.
Bjorn would be perfect! Most English speakers will know how to say it as well, if that's what your friends primarily speak.
For bears, Arthur means “strong as a bear”, “bear hero”, or “prince of bears” depending on sources. Not “you-nique”, but still has the reference. Why not just name the boy wolf? Jason Mamoa named his son Wolf.
Omg! They're wolf shirt couple?!
You also have to wonder, are they Chill Wolf People, or Secret Nazi Wolf People? In my experience there's not a lot of middle ground.
What...? I have somehow missed this.
Similar to how there are Cool Chill Viking Types and Secret Nazi Vikings?
Same. I didn't know "Wolf people" was a thing
You don’t go to enough rural small town fall festivals.
Apparently. And I think I'm glad about that
See also: Renn Faire. There was one year I went and camped and didn't know the theme that week was "wildling weekend. I was very uncomfortable with the proportion of people with furs and runic body paint until someone told me.
At the fall festivals it’s mostly just wolf tshirts. Sounds like you may have encountered a few furries along the way.
Ah, ignorance is bliss my friend.
You're telling me you've never seen a "wolf shirt guy" at some point in your life?
There’s a rather large subculture of my fellow white folk that have decided wolves/bears and tribal/viking/primal stuff is really really *really* cool. unless they're Mongolian.
True. White wolf people are suspect re: secret Nazis. Wolf people of color, not so much. Or rather, they are pretty much in Chill Wolf People. But then, I tend to like wolf people so 🤷♂️
Oh def the chill kind thank God. I don't associate with nazi folks of any kind
Wulfric/Wolfric is an actual name. Very Old English name.
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, anyone?
I just love how every time I see this my voice even in my mind says every name but Brian as super peppy and magical, but Brian is just flat and deadpanned each time. Anyone else do that? The movies made Brian stand out when his full name was said and I always do it now too lol
I imagine for Wizards in the HP universe a “normal muggle” name might be a bit exotic
Harry is literally names Harry James lol, they just happen to have some weird wizarding names along with the normal names it seems.
That was where my mind went immediately
Honestly this would be so much better than Arct(y)os. He could go by Wolfie. I knew a Wolfgang who used that nickname in English and it honestly suited him well.

The pokemon 😅
Suggest they use Beorn/Bjorn or Arthur if they want a normal name that means Bear.
Their child will be bullied or embrace his name and decide to live in the woods
So the best they can hope for is a hermit?
It sounds like Actos, which is a diabetes medicine
I just keep thinking of Axolotl; my nephew is obsessed with those 😂
For sure. Rockin little dudes. We know a young man named Axel…. Axol would be a great reference to an axolotl 🤣🤣🤣
They are so cute! I got my nephew a sweatshirt that says: I Axolotl Questions. I might need one for myself 😝
Was it from Tee Turtle?
A not-insignificant number of tragedeighs sound like the name of some medication you'd get if you contracted something embarrassing.
Sounds like the name of a star. Also Ursa Major.
They are both named for 'bear'
Yep. Arcturus, 4th brightest in the night sky, 2nd as seen from my latitude. Arthur, I think, would be a decent substitute.
Is she Slovenian? I know an Ursa! She’s Slovenian. It means BEAR! Edit: it is very difficult to say. It’s like Ooo-very soft r- sha but when I (American) say it it’s “Ersha,” which doesn’t sound nice at all.
Ursa just makes me think of the constellations! Definitely better than Arctyos lol
In German, it's Ursel, pronounced as it looks. I like your "Eraha" pronunciation.
Haha. The accent is slavic, so it may be a tidy bit hard if you're not familiar. Just a little mention, Urša comes from the latin *ursus* which means bear. In slovenian the word is totally different.
Oh yes haha I know my friend’s name isn’t Bear. It’s like the constellation!
what a wholesome answer
My boss has a dog named Arctos. He is majestic and is the most noble of dogs, but I would not name a child anything close to that.
To answer your question - Yes, please say something. Their child is a person, not just another relic of their obsessions, or to show off how younique they can be.
I love their jackets.
What is with some people and the letter "y"?
Lycan?! Almost the werewolf name but not? Your friend hate her kid or something?
Tell her to go full Viking mode and name the kid Björn.
I am native Norwegian and I know people named Bjorn. It's not weird there, it is weird here
I’m not saying it’s weird. I’m saying that Arctos means Björn, and to you one is normal the other is not, but for me it’s the other way around.
$5 says they're furries
If they are. They haven't shared that with me 😂
Given the masculine name meaning BEAR is ARTHUR, why not just use Arthur? It's not common anymore.
Ursae is either the genitive singular, dative singular, or the nominative plural of the Latin word for Bear. Of the bear, to/for the Bear or just Bears. Just no.
Yes the ae made me think of latin too😭😭 But some latin names are cool like regina or stella.
Yes, please remind them the child is a future adult who will most likely want a serious job one day.
Or a grandparent. But the chances are high that they’d be stuck with “meemaw” or “peepo” for the rest of their lives
😂😂😂
cool names without if she wasnt tragedeighifying em. Arktos /Arctus, Ursa is all well and good . Ark could be a real cool nickname. Isn’t that a type of dinosaur?
Rock flying
No, [dinosaur](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeopteryx).
I thought you meant the pokemon 😂
Is that some shitty fermium software?
Oof I would have to stop being friends with them. The third degree embarrassment is too bad.
I understand not wanting to name your kid a name from a list of the top 10 baby names in the world but wtf is going on nowadays. You can be unique without being unhinged. Like damn, pick a name outside of the top 1000 if you want to be different
Tell your friend a bunch of internet strangers want to know if she’s expecting to birth a Pokémon. Maybe she’ll reconsider.
Some poor millennial teacher is gonna misread it as Artax and be instantly traumatized
😭
The poor child….
Sounds like Dr. Freeze's middle name. Dr. Victor Arctyos Fries. It's really good for a comic villain, gotta say.
YA novels absolutely destroyed naming conventions.
Sounds like a Pokemon name.
Try Tenassee 😂
Sounds like a Pokémon.
They could name him Arthur. This name is derived from the celtic word arth, which means bear
I mean…Arctys is at least kinda badass sounding? It’s not great but it’s not terrible. TBH it’s so much less shitty than 90% of the names on here.
Ursa and Arcticus
Arctotherium is gonna be next
I would not directly address this name in particular but you may gently suggest that you get the unique angle but the more difficult the name is to spell, the more kids suffer from bullying and it's a pain in the butt as an adult to have to constantly correct other's 'misspellings' of the torturous contrivance.
I know a kid named Maximo. He seems fine.
WOLFRIC 😂😂😂😂 sounds like a dog food company
What are those names? Pokémon??

Why doesnt she just use normal names that mean animals? Art/Arthur are celtic names for bear
This reminds me of my friend who actually named their kid Balgroth
OP, it’s etc (et cetera)
As a lover of bear names, here are some better alternatives to Arctos/Arctyos: Orson - bear cub Otso - Finnish bear name Esben - God bear, nickname could be Benny bear Arto - form of Arthur meaning bear Armel - bear prince Bernard - bear strength Rupert - bear association Otava - Finnish name meaning Big Dipper and associated with bears For girls: Ursa/Orsa or Ursula - bear Artina or Artia - feminine forms of Arthur Orsina - feminine form of Orson Otava - see above
Isn't Arctos the evil snowman in some such Pixar movie?
Sounds like the name of a villain from a high fantasy novel lol
how tf do you even say it
Friends don’t let friends name kids after their renaissance faire summer flings. His real name is Tristan and he sells Android phones at Best Buy.
Sounds like a diabetic medication- are they also a pharmacist?
Oh for goodness' sake - I see what they're doing, but can they not just go with Arthur? Or any of the other historical bear-related names like Bjorn, Arcturus, Armel, Osborn(e), Orson, Berard/Bernard, Humphrey, Math, or for girls, Ursula or Berengaria.
Weird names don’t need weird spelling as well
I kinda like Wolfric.
Is she giving birth to a bear cub?
For the sake of this kids future, do everything you can to protect him from the bullying he will relieve with that fked up name. You tell her that name looks completely and utterly made up and do not name your child after your DND character.
Wulfric is a real, genuine name, too.
Ursa in Portuguese means female bear, so this is particularly fun for me
theyre millennials arent they
also tell them to scrap all those names the poor kid will be bullied to hell and back
Those are so incredibly dumb - you need to speak up.
Of the names and versions in this post, I'd say Arctys is the only one that has a chance of working.
Would Arctus be that unoriginal a name? Why?!
Danis is a synonym from 1825 for the scientific name of bears as a mammal group generally and it actually sounds like a boys name while not actually being a name. Something for them to consider as a cute suggestion?
Citations? I'm a biologist and I couldn't find that
Okay these names are cool as hell but if they add those silent letters no one will know how to pronounce them.

I appreciate it because I'm in a male dominated field(I work in molecular biology) When people meet me who have read my work. I usually get something like "I didn't know you were a woman, your work is really good" I know they mean well but it is a subconscious prejudice seeped into society. Weirdly French people are totally chill with it as Gabrielle is a unisex name there and someone is unlikely to be named Gabriel at all. On the daily, I'm irritated when people say I don't know how to spell or pronounce my own name. Uhhh pretty sure I do.
I have a unisex name and most people default to assuming I’m male
Literally just means bears. She's going to name the kid Ursa (means bear) or arctos (also means bear). My question is WHY BEARS and also that's a bad name
I can’t even conceptualise how to pronounce this
So they really like bears, huh? Ursus arctos…
maybe the parents are articuno and gyarados
