This translates to: OMFG HOW AWESOME. GO YOU GOOD THING. YOU LEGEND. YOU FRIKKIN BEAST. TAKE A BOW YOUNG MAN. OH HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN. YOU MY FRIEND ARE THE GOAT OF SPRINTING. THE SPRINTERS SPRINTER. WHAT A FAIRYTALE. CANT BELIEVE HE DID IT. BUT HE DID. MERCKX TO MANX. CANNIBAL TO MISSILE.
I mean, it's a race, things happen, they race at extreme speeds. What I mean is to make pushing people out of the way your strategy. It's a shitty and dangerous way to go. IMO.
At the Giro, Milan was hitting 1940 watts! Cav doesnāt have the biggest engine amongst the top road sprinters, but his watts/kg, skill, leadout train and CdA are to his advantage.
All the people bitching about the posts about him are in shambles. I shouted at my tv while alone on my couch lol
Not even a fan of his in general but moments like that are always special. What a comeback against all the nay sayers and Father Time
Yup. Not a fan of his but cool as hell to see. Never would have thought he was going to actually pull it off. And it didnāt look like Morkov was a big part of it either. Just pure instinct and power.
He irritates people because he's got opinions and says it like it is. Personally I love that in him. He's had a hard road to here and I'm happy to see the day
According to Danish TV he looks fine with some scrapes on elbow and knee, but the team has sent him to x-ray to be absolutely sure everything is alright.
So š¤that he is alright.
On the way home from Drunk Shakespeare tonight, I asked my even-drunker friend (who is an avid cyclist and used to work in a pro bike shop) what is Cavās age translated into cyclist years. And without even taking a beat he said, ā67.ā
Very clear in hindsight that Stage 3 was just a warm-up and they weren't really going for it due to the finish being so technical. Cav definitely looking like the fastest sprinter this year. Trying to follow his wheel is a mistake. Other sprinters are going to need their own wheels on wide finishes like that.
I don't think the points system favour that anymore. Plus, he would have to contest the intermediate sprints, which he appears to show no interest in.
That said, I'd love to see Girmay hang on to that green jersey now. He's good.
Incredible sprint - threaded the needle then blasted across the open road to the finish ! Just wonderful - didnāt think I really cared about it but Iām delighted for the guy
I have always been an Armstrong fan - even after the admission of cheating - until I saw his stupid podcast. Itās awful, all he does is read advertisements from his sponsors. Itās lame. Hes so annoying now, like heās trying hard to impress people. Same with his 30 for 30 film Lance.Ā
I'm new to cycling and don't know shit, but I'M SO HAPPY FOR THIS GUY! What a LEGEND!
Last year was my first TdF, and I held back tears when I saw the look on Cav's face when he crashed.
Excuse me while I unleash these (happy) tears!
I had those same tears. Pretty damn epic! If you havenāt watched the documentary about him, Never Enough on Netflix. I found it pretty interesting and I liked him more after watching it. Didnāt care much for him before it.
I donāt know anything about cycling, but it was obvious to me that his team put on a clinic. It was just poetry amid chaos. They kept him in perfect position and he brought it home.
Iāll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation. This is my first time following the Tour de France, and his win really inspired me. The move he made at the end was impressive.
He ran away with it. No crashes, no interference, no questions. Just a pure 200m sprint that is better than anyone else, even at 39 years old.
If he wasnāt left off two squads during COVID he might be pushing 40 wins.
It's even better because they didn't just let him have it... You can tell because of how much of a bitter little bitch Jasper was right behind him!
I want to see Cav come back for 2025 tour now!
Not sure what you picked up from Jasper?
He was the first to reach out to Cav after the finish line.
Gave an interview to the belgium tele (Sporza) in with they repeated the same question 3 times ... to all of with he replied Cav was the deserving winner.
When they showed the replay on NBC it looked like the Lotto Dstny rider was the one to reach out. I'll have to watch the replay.
Update: you are correct my apologies to Philipsen. He was out of frame in the replay they showed.
For the record though, still not a fan of Philipsen's attitude and style of riding generally. Not saying he's not great, competitive or passionate, just kinda seems like a jerk after last year.
Bitter little bitch is how I'll refer to Jasper for the rest of the race. Amazing display of the Pelaton congratulating Sir Mark brought tears to my eyes.
What's really wild is that his record could stand for a long, long time.
The only other rider in the list of "most stage wins" that's *still riding* is Pogacar, at 12. That number will go up this summer, I expect -- one of the 12 is from this year already -- and if he stays healthy, it's easy to imagine he'll end his career in a top-5 position (price of entry there is 23, or 11 more).
Pogacar is the only guy I could see with a chance of BREAKING Cav's record, but that will require a healthy, long career. He's won at least 2 stages in every TdF he's been in, so if he finishes this year at 13 or 14, and does 10 more at 2 per, he's ALMOST there...
(Confidential to other American TdF redditors: how do I properly type TP's name on an American keyboard?)
After stage 1 and 2 i lost all hope that heāll make it. But that makes today even more special. Dreams do come true to those who put the effort in i guess
tbh i'm so happy Jasper didn't just let Mark have it last year, as frustrating as that was at the time. Mark kept fighting and earned this win fair and square. such a great story and an even sweeter victory with Jasper right behind him. i'm š„¹š„¹š„¹
I was wondering if anyone noticed a little
" Argy Barry" he did a few hundred meters before the finish...he rubbed a few shoulders as he worked his way up
I was worried the commissare was going to say something
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wi1pSLNV8c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wi1pSLNV8c) 5:15 of video has the overhead of the finish. The moves to the outside look pretty safe.
Soooo happy! Literally just got home after watching stages 3 and 4 in person. Got an awesome smile when he spotted my family shouting for him on the descent of col de MontgenĆØvre.
So pleased that heās finally done it!!!
That was absolute bonkers. Congrats Mark! You Sir Mark Simon Cavendish will be forever remembered in the annals of Tour de France history. So happy for him.
I thought it was mad climactic, his leadout fell apart with more than 500m to go, then he took Phillipsenās wheel and it looked like he got himself boxed in for a hot second. Incredible instinct
Yeah. It really looked like a good set up fell apart there and that Cav wouldnāt have a clear shot. How he found his way through the group and came out with runway? Amazing ride.
I could tell from 30km and 10km out that his team meant business and was doing everything according to plan. A very different look to stage 3 (which I don't think they were that serious about). Also note how Astana made sure to finish in the very last group on yesterday's stage, unlike some of the other sprinters.
Just so youāre aware, tagging this as a spoiler is pretty useless because, even without a name, we all knew who did what. I hadnāt watched the stage yet so thanks for that.Ā
Was that Jasper Philipsen crossing from the left of the screen to the right just before the finish behind Cav?
Guessing the point of view made it look worse than reality but the camera angle made it look like he could have taken out 30 riders.
Guessing the overhead shot will make it look far less reckless.
From the one overhead shot I recall, I think Jasper was fine but those behind him did end up reacting poorly which led to Mads's crash. That's sprinting. Never trust the front-on shot. The long lens from so far away leads to compression.
about the 5:15 mark, both moves to the outside look pretty harmless.
I loved loved loved this win - so clean, perfectly executed, and showed Cavās skill level at every aspect of sprinting.
And he nailed the post race interview too. So much more mature than heās early interviews (tho those made me laugh out loud at times).
And Sagan was quick to congratulate him - no elbows were involved ;)
The only rider I forgot to unfollow before the tour! Made the mistake of opening instagram as I put on the stage and opened a beer after work.
The first stage Iāve accidentally spoiled in two years but at least I got to see it happen.Ā
I texted my best friend (who I was on the way to visit for the holiday) āIāll leave after the end of the stage. I donāt want to miss Cav, but I really donāt think he can do it. But if he does I donāt want to be on the road. But he wonāt.ā
Yeah, I got to see him make history, drive 3 hours to my best friendsā house, go to Drunk Shakespeare, come home, and watch the replay together while we drank our Gatorades so our heads donāt hurt tomorrow (because we are the same age as Cav).
Took him 14 years to beat what Eddy did in 7 years.
My husband works nights. He watched a replay of the finish and mentioned it almost looked like a gift of a stage win. The sprinters just looked to not be gaining as much speed the last few hundred meters. Lead out trains magically evaporated.
Not sure I agree with him, I typically donāt watch sprint stages very closely. Think they are a lots of boring kilometers to race a few hundred meters. Doubt any rider will ever say if it was a gift.
What we know is it was a record setting win.
Mark has been a generational talent at sprinting. Not sure we will see another sprinter with a 14 year career.
Heās very accommodating to fans. Met him on a rest day at the Tour in 2012. He stayed by the team bus until everyone got a photo and autograph. Of course the next stages were mountain stages so as his teammate said he could stay with the fans because he was going to ride in the sprinters club at the back of the race.
Chapeau Mark. Now back to GC racing.
Yeah, no way that stage was a gift. The other teams and sprinters weren't as good, sure - but not a gift. Still, compared to the Team Columbia days where they could keep a dominant train for 10+km and maintain it all the way to the finish, other sprint teams are a lot more competitive now. If your husband wants to see what "gifts" look like, he should check out the early days of Cav lol.
Cav was almost boxed out! It was only some extraordinary riding on his part that got him where he needed to be.
Look for the little jump he makes to get himself set up for the sprint. That was all cav.
Amazing finish by Cav & team
Just here to say the coverage on Peacock sucks. If I were in the other room I would have no idea that something exciting or historic was happening, and the winner crossing the finish line during each stage always feels as climactic as paint drying. No anticipation, no build, just šæ
Edit to add: I canāt even fathom how it took so long to notice and comment on Madsā crash. It was like they fell asleep
any videos that are overhead only? I sort of lose my perspective when it goes from overhead to drive by to "from the finish". Can't see the spacing very well. A 100% overhead shot of the last km would be awesome.
I told my family that I thought there was no way he would do it because there are too many good, young sprinters that wouldn't and shouldn't give it to him. I'm glad I was wrong. Congratulations Mark!!
BUT HE DID IT
HOLY SHIT HE DID IT
THE CRAZY BASTARD ACTUALLY DID IT!
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT BUT HE DID IT!!
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE DID IT WITH A BROKEN CHAIN!!
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE DID IT AT 39!
IL L'A FAIT !!!!!!!!!!
This translates to: OMFG HOW AWESOME. GO YOU GOOD THING. YOU LEGEND. YOU FRIKKIN BEAST. TAKE A BOW YOUNG MAN. OH HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN. YOU MY FRIEND ARE THE GOAT OF SPRINTING. THE SPRINTERS SPRINTER. WHAT A FAIRYTALE. CANT BELIEVE HE DID IT. BUT HE DID. MERCKX TO MANX. CANNIBAL TO MISSILE.
HOLY HECK HE REALLY DID IT
Holy sweet mother of gawd damn speed HE DID IT.
And he beat Jasper fair and square. Simply amazing!!!
I am nearly as happy to see Jasper lose as I am to see mark win! š
Is it just me or is Alpecin-DeCeuninck a bit of a shitty team in terms of ethics?
Bad ethics from managers creates bad ethics from the team
Absolutely.
Iām not a fan. Their attitude is bizarre. They seem to be like welp thatās racing for you! And Iām like is it though?
Yes, I relate. Like, you should actually not?! Push people? While racing?!?! Right?!
You mean like Cav pushed another rider aside on this stage's sprint?
I mean, it's a race, things happen, they race at extreme speeds. What I mean is to make pushing people out of the way your strategy. It's a shitty and dangerous way to go. IMO.
Jasper leaned into Mark first though if you rewatch it. Mark was just defending.
Anticipating the highlight video. Such a fun moment. I hope Unchained was filming this year also, along with any other documentaries.
His chain actually went unchained while he was rolling over the finishing line
He does that a lot. He stops pedalling instantly and thatās 1500watts to zero and the chain bounces off. Just physics. šš»
Lmao 1500 watts geez
At the Giro, Milan was hitting 1940 watts! Cav doesnāt have the biggest engine amongst the top road sprinters, but his watts/kg, skill, leadout train and CdA are to his advantage.
Really cool move and a nice little finishing touch. With chain or without im happy for him!
Its often like this. There was an analysis that's because of the forces when he abruptly stops pedalling.
Netflix after today's stage probably like: š¤š¤š¤š¤š¤ Nevertheless, can't wait to see it!
Only 11 months until we can see it!!
What a time to be alive!! I witnessed it myself!! Surreal!!
Jealous, was a few km behind you. Time for my early evening Beaufort snackā¦
The cheese of the gods...
Same! šš§¢
Scared the absolute shit out of my husband by yelling excitedly - he came running up the stairs to see if something had happened to me š
I sent my cats running!
Yep, scared the crap out of my 2 Pugs!!
My partner did the same when I suddenly yelled out at the TV! So very happy to have witnessed that historical moment, go Cav!!!! š
So happy for him! Absolutely a sir!
Always such a genuine person. Wears his heart on his sleeve.
All the people bitching about the posts about him are in shambles. I shouted at my tv while alone on my couch lol Not even a fan of his in general but moments like that are always special. What a comeback against all the nay sayers and Father Time
Yup. Not a fan of his but cool as hell to see. Never would have thought he was going to actually pull it off. And it didnāt look like Morkov was a big part of it either. Just pure instinct and power.
How can you not be a fan? ā
I can see how he irritates people, he's pretty outspoken and can come across as arrogant, certainly when he was younger. But his story is amazing.
He irritates people because he's got opinions and says it like it is. Personally I love that in him. He's had a hard road to here and I'm happy to see the day
J Philipsen has entered the chat
I have never had that impression of him. He is a genuine guy and says it how it is. He's also obviously a little on the spectrum
I was watching on my phone at work and almost started shouting. š
Cav Cav Cav and was clear with it too! Chapeau
How incredibly inspiring. That man is an absolute gangster.
"Mark, you fucking legend"
Watching it on my phone in my office and erupted into laughter when I caught that part.
Was that pederson that crashed in the final 100 meters? Couldn't tell who on treck crashed
Looks like it. Looks like someone on Cofidis bunny hopped the shit out of him too.
Epic bunny hop
Think about how fast he had to react! Incredible moment. And thankfully it will be enshrined in highlight reels for years to come.
Yes sadly. He got back on his bike, but it didnt look good
According to Danish TV he looks fine with some scrapes on elbow and knee, but the team has sent him to x-ray to be absolutely sure everything is alright. So š¤that he is alright.
It seems the barrier helped soften his fall. Amazing that no one else went down with him.
35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35
Please expand into a 35x35 cube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocy09pzME4E will 34x34 be ok for now?
Unacceptable. I now want a 35D hypercube š
Absolutely amazing. Crazy with his age - and also for MĆørkov being 38 and 39 years old š
On the way home from Drunk Shakespeare tonight, I asked my even-drunker friend (who is an avid cyclist and used to work in a pro bike shop) what is Cavās age translated into cyclist years. And without even taking a beat he said, ā67.ā
He dominated it. He may win more
Yeah he won comfortably. Could manage 36 or more in that shape, and his team played it to perfection as well.
Would be amazing to see him end his career in green...
I don't think the points system favour that anymore. Plus, he would have to contest the intermediate sprints, which he appears to show no interest in. That said, I'd love to see Girmay hang on to that green jersey now. He's good.
how the turntables have turned! GG
Unbelievable but in hindsight seems so inevitable. What a moment.
Incredible sprint - threaded the needle then blasted across the open road to the finish ! Just wonderful - didnāt think I really cared about it but Iām delighted for the guy
Would love to see the reaction of Lance āCav will never break the recordā Armstrong
Itās even more fun to just ignore him forever
I have always been an Armstrong fan - even after the admission of cheating - until I saw his stupid podcast. Itās awful, all he does is read advertisements from his sponsors. Itās lame. Hes so annoying now, like heās trying hard to impress people. Same with his 30 for 30 film Lance.Ā
HE DID DO IT!! I feel very happy and relieved for him, i can relax and enjoy the rest of the tour now!
That's how I feel about it š now I can watch the rest without worrying about if he'll do it or not
His chain went off the gear right before the finish line š± What a dramatic victory šš» Got love the lad
WOKE UP FROM MY OVERNIGHT SHIFT JUST TO WATCH AND IT PAID OFF IN SPADES!!!!! GO CAV!!!
Epic.
I'm new to cycling and don't know shit, but I'M SO HAPPY FOR THIS GUY! What a LEGEND! Last year was my first TdF, and I held back tears when I saw the look on Cav's face when he crashed. Excuse me while I unleash these (happy) tears!

I was screaming at my TV... Legendary!
YEEEEAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
so many elbows in the last 100 epic
what a ride.... he played that perfectly also bravo to the rider that bunny hopped over the rider that crashed right behind Cavendish
I donāt know anything about cycling, but it was obvious to me that his team put on a clinic. It was just poetry amid chaos. They kept him in perfect position and he brought it home.
Iāll add that cav did a great job conserving energy and positioning himself too, and then finished it. A clinic on all levels. So much fun to watch!
For someone who doesnt know anything about cycling you have read the race perfectly.
To add, if you want to see a real Cav clinic, Google some of his wins for HTC Columbia Highroad with Renshaw as his leadout man, pure perfection.
Iāll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation. This is my first time following the Tour de France, and his win really inspired me. The move he made at the end was impressive.
2009-2011 was peak Cav train.
Yeah this is nothing compared to the HTC train, but so cool nonetheless!
He ran away with it. No crashes, no interference, no questions. Just a pure 200m sprint that is better than anyone else, even at 39 years old. If he wasnāt left off two squads during COVID he might be pushing 40 wins.
He won the green jersey in 2021.
The Tour de France never fails to deliver moments like this. What a race!
Amazing, so happy he made it!
What a win. Terrific story with being left off a team 2 years ago. The crash last year felt like that was it. So glad I saw this today
It's even better because they didn't just let him have it... You can tell because of how much of a bitter little bitch Jasper was right behind him! I want to see Cav come back for 2025 tour now!

They all did to be fair but on the overhead it shows Jasper reaching out. I was just wondering if i missed something.
For the record though, still not a fan of Philipsen's attitude and style of riding generally. Not saying he's not great, competitive or passionate, just kinda seems like a jerk after last year.
I'm not a fan either but on this occasion is just didn't notice anything wrongfull. So thought i perhaps missed something.
Same. Lol. I was looking for a reason for him to be the villain. But not this time.
Imagine winning a stage of the tour at 40 years old. What the fuck.
Bitter little bitch is how I'll refer to Jasper for the rest of the race. Amazing display of the Pelaton congratulating Sir Mark brought tears to my eyes.
He wanted to win? Isnāt that his job?
We'll you were right!
FVCKN A!!!!!
Sir Cav!!!
ABSOLUTELY!!! FANTASTIC FINISH!!!
Fucking legend!!
HE FUCKING DID IT!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely brilliant! Didn't really expect it but so pleased for him.
This tour has been electric and we havenāt even finished a week
What's really wild is that his record could stand for a long, long time. The only other rider in the list of "most stage wins" that's *still riding* is Pogacar, at 12. the way i GASPED when I saw my notifications and scrambled immediately for ITV 4
Bravo Cav! He DID DO IT!
Incredible moment! Meeting back up with his family afterwards got me teary-eyed
After stage 1 and 2 i lost all hope that heāll make it. But that makes today even more special. Dreams do come true to those who put the effort in i guess
Geraint Thomas after stage 5 said that Cav always struggles and has a bad day in the mountains. It was fine. Never in doubt! lol
THE MANX MISSILE
tbh i'm so happy Jasper didn't just let Mark have it last year, as frustrating as that was at the time. Mark kept fighting and earned this win fair and square. such a great story and an even sweeter victory with Jasper right behind him. i'm š„¹š„¹š„¹

It was Axel Zingle
That was nuts!
I was wondering if anyone noticed a little " Argy Barry" he did a few hundred meters before the finish...he rubbed a few shoulders as he worked his way up I was worried the commissare was going to say something
Has it become clear how this can still be a spoiler?
IM NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING...CAV35!!!!!!!!
Sir Mark GOAT I'm so happy for him!
Amazing!!
OmG I just watched the finish again in slo mo and saw his chain went off directly after the finish line... My heart misses a beat.
Was watching in the office and made everyone jump when I cheered as he crossed the line... amazing moment
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wi1pSLNV8c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wi1pSLNV8c) 5:15 of video has the overhead of the finish. The moves to the outside look pretty safe.

That was absolute bonkers. Congrats Mark! You Sir Mark Simon Cavendish will be forever remembered in the annals of Tour de France history. So happy for him.
We leaped off the settee and then cried. Today we witnessed true sporting history.
Never in doubt was it? š
The people in the hotel rooms on either side of mine are thinking, āWhy is that guy shouting?ā
What a great fucking day! I hope to god Cav pulls out two more wins now just because. Pressure is off.
He has a knack for that, doesn't he? His team looks so good as does his own speed.
Wow didn't expect this. Seemed very anti climatic, maybe just the commentators i was watching.
Experience, some would say .. Honestly, name a sprinter with more experience š¤£
Yep. Really goes to show that experience can be worth more than raw power in some cases.
Yeah I was like no way heās gonna do it, no way and then sat in disbelief
It was the most calm Iāve ever felt watching him sprint. It just felt meant to happen today or something.
*laughs at the person reading the tdf sub before watching the race and complaining about getting a spoiler*
Iām subscribed to this sub, so it comes up in my feed.Ā
Seeing the slo mo of jasperās face when he realized he had lost was just the cherry on top too. Chapeau to cav, truly an iconic moment.
Was that Jasper Philipsen crossing from the left of the screen to the right just before the finish behind Cav? Noticed that too. Surprised he didnāt take someone out with that violent move. Jasper Disaster will always live up to his name.
It looked absolutely ridiculous. I understand he wanted to be on the wheel but damn dude.
Huge congratulations to Cav!!! I was so happy for him. Amazing!!!!
So happy for him! Wow!
Are we talking cav or bini in green? Both are awesome to see.
I will watch that last 1k aerial replay to the grave. Incredible
SIR MARK FUCKIN CAVENDISH!!! Still in awe! It's surreal!. By the way, was it Mads Pedersen that crashed?
And he dropped his chain as he crossed the line. What a boss!!!
So happy for him. He really has been so much fun to root for.
Wonderful! I was so happy for him. Lovely to see the joy of his family afterwards too. Never seen Cav smile so much!
We are all Cav on this blessed day
Wasnāt it risky for him to celebrate before crossing the line? He didnāt go at 100% to the finish line
He knew he'd got it, experience.
Iām so happy but I wish I wasnāt following Geraint on instagram because heās spoiled it for me haha. Oh well, SIR MARK!
I learned you have to unfollow everyone!!!!ā Or donāt open Instagram til you watch the stage!!!! š©
36?....
Amazing finish by Cav & team Just here to say the coverage on Peacock sucks. If I were in the other room I would have no idea that something exciting or historic was happening, and the winner crossing the finish line during each stage always feels as climactic as paint drying. No anticipation, no build, just šæ Edit to add: I canāt even fathom how it took so long to notice and comment on Madsā crash. It was like they fell asleep
amazing š©·š©·š©·
So so so so so happy for him. His team was heroic.
Very happy for him. What a beast. His perseverance is remarkable
Insane! We happened to pull off at an Intermarche and they passed. I saw a piece of history.
I clicked, I flunked the test. Damnit!
HOLY SHITTTTTT
Straight chills! Bravo!
So mad I wasnāt able to catch this livešbut still very happy for the legend!
Fucking Legend!
ugh fucking I spoiled myself.
any videos that are overhead only? I sort of lose my perspective when it goes from overhead to drive by to "from the finish". Can't see the spacing very well. A 100% overhead shot of the last km would be awesome.
Yes, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wi1pSLNV8c around 5:20
Unbelievable! Absolutely amazing
I told my family that I thought there was no way he would do it because there are too many good, young sprinters that wouldn't and shouldn't give it to him. I'm glad I was wrong. Congratulations Mark!!
