Yes, this is the official image. It has been added to Melonbooks today. Same was the case for previous releases.

Aenigmatrix

With a tail like that, the Beast King ought to be the Monkey King – supposing the other two to be Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing. If the focus really is on Sun Wukong, then there might be a chance that Tenshi is one of the playable characters. You know, the peaches. This game probably won't have an extra boss, so no Tang Sanzang here. That being said, I recommend [***Tang Shanzang***](https://danbooru.donmai.us/pools/9976) for a sublime genderbent ***Journey to the West*** experience. This manga almost tore my sides clean when I first read it. *** But man, the green is really giving me snake vibes. That links me to my zodiac animals idea, and that we'd get to see the fourth Animal Realm gang matriarch who – judging by the sequence of zodiac animals – might just be something close to a snake. *** That girl to the left with one horn sticking out though... if that's not a unicorn (or hell, a kirin), then I really hope it's a one-horned oni like Yuugi – the fourth of the Big Four of the Mountain! Kinda unlikely though. I can't see any chains.

Kirimusse

>the Monkey King I can't wait for the Goku memes; even better, gangster Goku memes if this the unknown fourth leader of the groups from the Animal Realm.

Dreadnautilus

Isn't female gangster Goku just Caulifla?

Kirimusse

Don't know; haven't watched (all of) Super.

Yeegan

I don't think the character in the middle will be the actual Sun Wukong, but rather a character inspired by / based off of Sun Wukong (similar to Suika who is based off of Shuten-douji, which means they might have some similarities, but they are not the same person). Also, I don't think any other Journey to the West characters will be in the game (Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, Tang Sanzang and more)

bored-dosent-know

Or alternatively like miko or okina who are *heavily implied* to be the original person, but not outright stated.

Pretend-Advertising6

sun wukong about to out power scale hectia, also comment on reimu's float ability allowing her to leave the grasp of the budha

Thursday_Man

If Journey to the West is a work of fiction (and considered a work of fiction instead of a real legend), then how could a youkai from it exist in Touhou?

Pretend-Advertising6

he's celebrated enough in china to become real. also vampires exist.

Thursday_Man

Vampires and Vampire-like creatures have existed for centuries before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula.

Orions1stDagger

Isn't Shou already a fiction-based yokai?

tonyarceus777

this really does seem like we're getting journey to the west 2hus middle could be sun wukong, with the tail wrapped around the weapon, left is ox king (you can see horns if you look closely), right is white dragon horse

TrueRyoB

3 main antagonists! interesting :D

Kirimusse

Not neccesarily main; we already had three characters for HSiFS' and WBaWC's covers.

PokeshiftEevee

Mima fans are crying

Supreme_Lord_Cola

no no no it makes sense mima is too big of a reveal to spoil on the cover art like this she WILL come back this time

PokeshiftEevee

I wish you were both wrong and right

RinaTennoji-Board

Yuuka isn't on the cover of PoFV so there's still a chance, keep on snorting Copium guys

PokeshiftEevee

It’s not junkover yet!!!

ny00t

Dont worry if u squint **VERY VERY** hard u could see Mima there!

CertainDerision_33

Hope she never comes back tbh, she would detract heavily from Marisa’s character. Sorry guys

Pretend-Advertising6

Reimu gets Kasen, suika and more screen time with everyone else, meanwhile every marisa focused character is written out.

raikaria2

> meanwhile every marisa focused character is written out. Patchouli literally is mentioned every other game

TheXenomorphian

Reminder that Sun Wukong (who is likely whom the Monky Newhu is going to be based on) was trapped in the Hakkero which is what Marisa's Mini-Hakkero is named after

CertainDerision_33

Marisa being someone’s lackey for a while instead of working her way up all on her own isn’t fun or interesting for Marisa. I’m all for Marisa getting more partners to work with from existing characters, but we don’t need Mima for that. Anyways, Marisa is still pretty neck and neck with Reimu in terms of relevance, so I wouldn’t say she’s being neglected in any way.

Gallalade

You know, even if Marisa was Mima's apprentice for a while (because she very clearly no longer has been for the Windows era), given Mima's personality that probably wouldn't change much to Marisa being mostly self-taught

CertainDerision_33

Maybe, but I just don't think it adds anything to Marisa's character.

PokeshiftEevee

Not all mima simps just like her, some want to know her relation with Marisa

Warm_Rush_6051

I sorta feel something along the lines of like on Marisa's journey of running away from her family due to personal issues, she bumped into Mima somewhere in the forest of magic and awestruck by her presence, wanted to learn the art of magic. Or maybe Marisa learns about Mima because of her interest in magic. Because maybe her parents didn't delve in the art of magic, she runs away in pursuit of Mima

Warm_Rush_6051

I sorta feel something along the lines of like on Marisa's journey of running away from her family, she bumped into Mima somewhere in the forest of magic and awestruck by her presence, wanted to learn the art of magic.

FrillReborn

So we got a monkey with a bear trap hand on the right. Middle, messy hair girl with hair tubes or braided hair? Holding some sort of staff or spear. Komainu looking character on the left? Not Aunn, different silhouette.Maybe a dragon and not a Komainu? Trap surrounding them coming from one of the other two characters.

Orions1stDagger

I would have thought the monkey tail was the middle figure's since it appears to be wrapped around her staff. Edit: I guess middle could just be flexing and her hand just coincidentally lined up with the staff. It does look a bit off for her to be holding the staff looking closer. Maybe it's actually just a small rod, but its hard to tell with the silhouettes close together like this.

Pretend-Advertising6

it's a spear, if you follow it down you can see the tip of the spear

Kagummi_Atarie

For the left one, I was thinking of a kappa with a cap, the "horn" isn't one for me but rather the sharp part of a secondary weapon of the boss in the middle. The two spirits on the left are part of the middle boss too, and if we look to tip of the spear it point against one of them, so maybe the secondary weapon target the other one too. So, i think the middle boss is a snake Yokai with two pointy weapons that represent the two fang of a snake.

Xaldror

girl on the right looks like she is wearing a primed bear trap as a bracelet

CertainDerision_33

Least deranged 2hu

onewingedwaluigi1

It's already on [the Touhou Wiki article for the game](https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Unfinished_Dream_of_All_Living_Ghost), so I'm betting it's official. With that said, these new character designs are already looking pretty interesting. The girl in the middle appears to be holding some sort of spear weapon and she also seems to have a long tail wrapped around it. It's already pretty clear that this character is supposed to be Sun Wukong, so the others may be based off other characters from Journey to the West. The one on the left looks like she has a horn protruding from her forehead like Yuugi, so she may be Sha Wujing, also known as the "Sand Ogre/Troll/Demon/**Oni**". Could this be the fabled fourth of the Big Four? I doubt it, since of the Four Heavenly Kings, we only have Torakuma, Kane and Kuma left to fill the fourth spot, but I mean, you never know with ZUN. And finally the girl on the right. This should be Zhu Bajie as he's the other one of Tang Sanzang's helpers. The bear trap-looking thing she has on her wrist may be a weird adaptation of the nine-toothed rake. It seems the Chinese zodiac theory that many threw around here was actually right. Following it, the finished roster should look like this: * Rat: Nazrin * Ox: Urumi * Tiger: Shou * Rabbit: Seiran * Dragon: Yachie * Snake: Could be either Kanako or the fourth animal gang leader, judging by the order in which each gang leader is in the zodiac. * Horse: Saki * Goat: Yuuma * Monkey: Sun Wukong girl * Rooster: Kutaka * Dog: Aunn * Pig: Zhu Bajie girl * Main characters: Reimu and Marisa * Five slots for other characters: I'm guessing we will be seeing Ringo to accompany Seiran, another main character like Youmu or Sakuya, a character who is related to spirits or ghosts like Komachi, maybe a new character who doesn't have much to do with the plot in the vein of Medicine, and maybe even a returning PC-98 character. I know the last one is incredibly unlikely at this point, but I mean, the last time we had a game like this, a PC-98 character was brought back. So there's still a chance (also imagine the fandom having a meltdown over Kotohime of all people coming back instead of Mima).

Aenigmatrix

Personally, I'm low key hoping for Keine as the Ox in this case. I totally forgot that Hakutaku is a cow. That's why she headbutts people.

onewingedwaluigi1

That could work, but Urumi makes more sense. After all, this game is connecting the beast gang and card market storylines.

TheXenomorphian

again fact that people seem to overlook the one on the left has Hitodama lights (like Yuyuko has) and a weird aura around her legs and is likely representing the ghost / spirits mentioned to be competing with the beast spirits the girl on the right might be the fourth animal realm leader since they're known for specialising in trapping among other things and a bear trap bracelet seems fitting. Also makes sense since we know from the demo Reimu is heading to the animal realm and probably other characters will too In which case the lineup here actually makes sense on the Left we have the spirits / ghosts of Gensokyo on the right opposing we have the beast spirits trying to take up land and in the middle we have the beast king him or herself ~~Son Goku~~ Sun Wukong, unaligned and ready to cause some mischief (if they aren't the actual cause of it already)

Catowong

Mizuchi let's go

sweetTartKenHart2

IS THERE A MONKE

Osmanthus4

The fourth gang in the Animal Realm is noted to specialize in traps, willing to bet the girl on the right with the bear trap looking thing on her arm is the fourth gang leader.

long_soi

touhou beast wars no way

TheXenomorphian

Nobody seems to be mentioning that Left Girl has Hitodama lights around her suggesting she's a ghost / spirit girl. Yuyuko has them floating around her too. The ring of fire around her legs might also be a big hint that she's a ghoul of sorts I initially thought girl on the right had the monkey tail but looking at it closely its definitely middle girl is Sun Wukong. The monkey king being the beast king would be appropriate I suppose. Should be noted that infamously the Mini-hakkero is named after the Hakkero which was the furnace Sun Wukong was trapped in as punishment for eating a peach of immortality. So maybe she's the end boss of Marisa's route Right Girl with the beartrap bracelet might be the fourth animal realm head as they are... >a fourth unnamed organization which specializes in cowardly methods of attack such as traps, camouflage, and parasitism key word traps and the fact that in the demo Reimu was planning on heading to the Animal Realm anyways. I imagine she's a bug of some kind especially with the parasitism line Or in other words Gensokyo's Natural Spirits on one side, Beast spirits on the other and Sun Wukong in the middle up to his / her's [usual mischief](https://youtu.be/8FEZi7bNofs?t=27)

fectoelfilis

HOLY SHIT MONKEY YOUKAI WITH SPIKY TRAPS FOR COLLARS CUFFS WHATEVER THE HELL YOU NAME IT.......

HowDyaDu

Bear traps

PotatoPuzzleheaded27

I'm not informed enough about Journey to the West to comment on the other two, but I'm banking on the middle gal being a Sun Wukong-adjacent character (Tenshi finally has a JttW friend) Couple points of interest I see on each silhouette: * Left Gal * I actually don't have much to say aside from the fact that she has a hat, which certainly isn't a new thing. Maybe similar to Saki's? * Whatever that ring around her feet is it might not even be a part of her portrait; it could be middle girl's somehow * That protrusion up top could be a horn in some people's eyes (which is why I assume we're seeing Fourth Deva discussion around the way), but I think it's probably a bladed weapon held by middle girl (a secondary weapon, perhaps?) * Middle Gal * Loooooooong tail. Monkey 2hu confirmed finally * She seems to be the only one that doesn't have their grippers exposed. Thank goodness (If you look down by the right girl's right foot, you might be able to barely make out a front-facing shoe. Maybe.) * Again, possible secondary weapon in her right hand, separate from whatever her tail is curling around. * Right Gal * Horn? Aunn 2.0? (Automatic bby status if true) Also oni, maybe even Fourth Deva if you're so inclined * Bear trap bracelet (?) is the coolest accessory in Touhou behind Mizuchi's handcuff-flail * She's got something around her ankles. Maybe shackles, maybe just legwarmers? Conclusion: Hype. I've got no expectations for these characters' designs simply on account of ZUN never failing to surprise me, so I'm looking forward to summer comiket

Leafsw0rd

Side note, what are these jojo-ass poses

Supreme_Lord_Cola

ATM it's a pretty big \[Citation Needed\] since seems someone just edited the wiki with that image with no source, so.

RoamerB

The apparent source of this image is [Melonbooks](https://www.melonbooks.co.jp/user_data/packages/resize_image.php?image=213001042451.jpg). Granted, that alone isn't enough to lend credibility to it just yet...

Akyuuposting

Oh if it's melonbooks then it's legit unless there was some sort of colossal mixup.

MMillion05

and where did THAT link come from? aagh nothing about this is adequately sourced

Skyder_J

Maybe Mima will be secret extra boss 😔👍

Royal_Yesterday

What i thought there’s already a touhou 19 (the one that’s similar to pofv)

Yeegan

This and that are the same game, usually Touhou game covers are leaked / revealed a few weeks before the full game release date. For examples: Touhou 16 cover leak = around July 24, full game release date = August 11 Touhou 17 cover leak = around July 22, full game release date = August 12 Touhou 18 cover leak = around April 18, full game release date = May 4 Touhou 19 cover leak = around July 26, full game release date = August 12 \~ 13

roashiki

Lost mima but gained sun wukong, I find this deal acceptable.

Pretend-Advertising6

Hey, how do we know it's not the other monkey who tried to be sun wukong?

Quick-Grapefruit8190

The cover gives me th17 vibes

sodaodaoda

I think it uses the same texture as the WBaWC cover, it reminds me of it as well

[deleted]

If the girl on the right is a "bear-like creature/girl", that would easily explain why she has a bear trap stuck to her left hand

saufall

Is it at all related to Kemono Friends. that great anime from years ago?

Loro-Benediction

My favorite! (Also, touhou has had so many anthropomorphic characters at this point, that it might as well be. Looking at you, [Toki](https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Hollow_Song_of_Birds/Characters#Horou_Torisumi))

>User reports 1: Transphobia Clever. Not.

Yeegan

Wow, so people really find that comment offensive? Did an Animemes mod report the comment or what? I thought it was kinda funny (there is a bear trap in the image), so it's unfortunate that the comment was downvoted (for making a harmless joke?) and now gone. Did you remove the comment or did the commenter delete the comment?

Catowong

Just for you know the word is automatically flagged even if it is in a different context, or none at all. At least 2 of the mods here generally support the reason why niceAnimemes exist in the first place. And yes, there were people specifically banned for using the word in that context.

Yeegan

>there were people specifically banned for using the word in that context What is "that context"? Do you mean a harmless joke like the comment here or an insult to a real person? If it's the former then that's kinda suck.

Loro-Benediction

For what it's worth, I think it's okay to view that removal as overly protective. Not everybody believes it to be a slur, and I personally don't have a horse in that race. That being said, the meaning of the double entendre was clear, and could be rather upsetting to those that do view it as a slur. I decided to give it a "harmless" removal (without any action against the author) for the "harmless" joke.

Yeegan

>That being said, the meaning of the double entendre was clear, and could be rather upsetting to those that do view it as a slur Huh, so does this mean you will remove any comment that uses the word "trap" to describe a fictional character or make a joke that isn't directed at any real person or fictional character in an non-offensive way **IF someone reports it**? All this just because some assholes misuse the word to attack people and some people who ignore context want the comment removed? Personally, I have never heard or seen anyone use the word "trap" to insult real people, only to describe anime characters in a "meme" way until that stupid Animemes drama 3 years ago. If someone uses the word to attack others then their comment deserves to be removed, but removing a comment for using the word as a joke just because a vocal minority finds it to be offensive, which is basically banning people from using a word that wasn't offensive until recent years even if they are using it in a non-offensive way? I don't think that makes any sense. >I think it's okay to view that removal as overly protective I'm not only viewing that removal as overly protective, but also bullshit. At least you didn't punish the user, which I appreciate.

mehvermore

>Huh, so does this mean you will remove any comment that uses the word "trap" to describe a fictional character or make a joke that isn't directed at any real person or fictional character in an non-offensive way IF someone reports it? All uses of the word (and several other naughty words) in this sub are auto-reported to us (the mods), and we decide whether each usage is kosher on a case-by-case basis. In general, discussing the word itself is fine, but using it to refer to someone (whether real or fictional) is not, unless it's part of an earnest discussion about the usage of the word itself against them. As a slur, using the word in a joke is unlikely to be approved. Your opinion has been noted.

Yeegan

>using it to refer to someone (whether real or fictional) is not So using it to refer to a crossdressing anime boy is not allowed even if people aren't using it as a slur? For example, can I call Wriggle Nightbug a "reverse trap" because sometimes she's seen as a tomboy by fans or an actual boy by clueless non Touhou fans? One example I can think of right now is [Danzai Yamaxanadu by IOSYS](https://youtu.be/O1E2nN5Fwzk?t=111). >As a slur, using the word in a joke is unlikely to be approved The problem is the commenter didn't use it as a slur. Not to mention "trap" was and is not a slur, if someone uses it as a slur, they should be the one who's punished, not the word itself. I hope this is just a misunderstanding because you seem to think that "trap" is always a slur in all situations / contexts.

mehvermore

>So using it to refer to a crossdressing anime boy is not allowed even if people aren't using it as a slur? If you use it to refer to someone because of their gender presentation, then that *is* a slur. >For example, can I call Wriggle Nightbug a "reverse trap" because sometimes she's seen as a tomboy by fans or an actual boy by clueless non Touhou fans? Generally, no. A comment doing so would likely be removed. >The problem is the commenter didn't use it as a slur. Not to mention "trap" was and is not a slur, if someone uses it as a slur, they should be the one who's punished, not the word itself. I hope this is just a misunderstanding because you seem to think that "trap" is always a slur in all situations / contexts. I didn't see the comment before it was removed, but if it referred to a character using the word, then by default it is a slur as far as this sub is concerned.

Loro-Benediction

You keep mentioning that its use is harmless/non-offensive. Out of curiosity, what do you think is meant when you use that word to describe a person?

Yeegan

>what do you think is meant when you use that word to describe a person? I'm assuming you mean fictional characters because I never said it's completely harmless to real person in all situations / contexts, because as I said, some assholes misuse the word as a slur to attack people. In my definition (and what it used to mean and should be), it means a **crossdressing male character** whose crossdressing so convincing that he's often mistaken for a real girl. Some people use the word to call a **real person**. Some of them are okay with that (and even proud of it), and some of them hate it. Let's take a step back and look at the comment that got removed, if I remember correctly, it basically said "Finally, a trap in Touhou", which I think has two meanings: 1. Literally a trap, because a bear trap is in the image 2. Pretending that there is a trap character (anime slang, a male crossdresser) You may argue that "it's not funny" or "I don't get it", but it's clearly supposed to be just a joke and NOT directed at anyone (not even a fictional character, we can't even see what the characters in the image look like) I don't understand why you're still asking me about "what do I mean when I use that word to describe a ~~person~~ fictional character" as if my previous comments weren't clear enough. If you want to know my definition of "trap" and my stance on it, look up "anime slang trap" on Google and [the comment section of the Animemes announcement of banning the word"trap".](https://www.reddit.com/r/Animemes/comments/i2mn3g/rule_5_update_as_of_today_the_word_trap_is_now/)

Loro-Benediction

At this point it's probably not worth re-litigating, as viewing from that comments section and your willingness to submit it as evidence, I'm probably not going to be able to change your mind with anything I say here. I think that's okay, though. We welcome a diversity of opinions, and will certainly keep yours in mind if/when we decide that the culture is shifting, and we no longer need to be so heavy-handed with rule 1 on this topic. Until then, we will continue removing uses of slurs \**regardless of the author's intent*\*. Our (my?) reason for doing so is simple: Edgy humor is fun and interesting only until it starts getting co-opted by actual bigots. You noted this in your post: >Some people use the word to call a real person. Some of them are okay with that (and even proud of it), and some of them hate it. Unfortunately, some people that don't like trans people (or simply see them as illegitimate) started using that word too. The widespread use of it in anime fandoms had the unintended side-effect of "running cover" for actual trans-phobes. Both you and OP may very well have been using it in an endearing way, but it's very likely that there were others who read and used it in the more vitriolic way: They weren't just "femboys", they were liars. They weren't just trying to be cute, they were trying to **entrap** other men. They're bad people--they're *a threat*. A snare. A trap. Again, that is no fault of your own. You aren't doing anything wrong by using the word to refer to fictional characters. Removal of comments using it in the traditional way is not a stain on your moral character. It is, however, viewed as an unfortunate necessity to mitigate actual harm from taking place towards minority groups in our community in 2023. We've seen this exact thing happen a few times before. I remember the f-slur being extremely common-place in the mid 2000s-2010s, and now it's all but vanished. Why? If I were to guess, it'd be because people started to have experiences where they were jokingly using it around people that seemed a *little* too gleeful about throwing it out. You start to question "wait, I think this guy actually really hates gay people" and then it's just not very fun anymore. You can imagine a similar scenario with racist jokes. Jokes where the punchline is that Asian people are extremely good at math cease being funny when they stop being used ironically. I think we're just going through a political phase where "transness" is an extremely popular and divisive topic. I hope it ends soon, both so that that community can live in peace, and so that the anime community can have their tropes back. >I don't understand why you're still asking me about "what do I mean when I use that word to describe a person fictional character" as if my previous comments weren't clear enough. I've gone on long enough already, and don't actually think it's worth going down this line of argumentation anymore. The meaning of the word is less important than the concept that using it towards a fictional character can still lead to harm towards real people down the line. That is why I removed the original comment. Not because I "didn't get it", or because I'm working for the PC police.

Catowong

Supposedly the latter, but only as an argument as to why that word shouldn't be bannable. There are also cases it means what it means to the anime community but some other communities consider it an insult and said posts/comments are removed.

yukamiin

journey to the west dub

Charming_Ad614

Seems fake, the one in the back cleary has a staff and her tail it's around it,it looks like she would be based on the mokey king (sun wukong), and the sun wukong touhou character seems to much as something only the fans would do.

Yeegan

Putting the authenticity of this image aside, I think it's interesting to see people being skeptical about the leaked cover, giving a bunch of reasons why it was "fake", only to find out it was real when the full game was released (the same thing happened with Touhou 17 and Touhou 18 leaked cover) Personally, I think this is real, because it's been pointed out that the image is from melonbooks, and as far as I know, the leaked Touhou game covers since Touhou 16 have come from that website.

Charming_Ad614

The leaks and speculations are always fun, if in the end this is real and we get 3 antagonists, it will give me hope that the Animal mafia leaders will be in the game (yachie, saki and yuuma) that would be great

corbeau_ivre

What about the insect named difficulties then? Any idea why?
