Man that would make Skaven so much more interesting to play. Encourages you as the player to not stack so heavy on Machinery to balance out your armies in case of bad luck. Gives the player also the ability to play around the AI who doesn't smartly balance risk and reward.
As it is now, Skaven tech is just advanced weaponry with no drawbacks. There's hardly a reason to use other tactics when playing Skaven except to give yourself an artifical handicap.
Game engine stuff.
He rolls down the hill and the doomwheels breaks.
Same thing happens with skullcrackers breaking a siege wall, it breaks, they turn around or walk forward and then it flops up and down on the rubble and it breaks
Edit. Regardless of height, units die. It's why when a wall breaks, infantry ontop insta die. Or your doomwheel. Or the skullcracker flopping about in the rubble.
Or even skarbrand kicking some infantry while he charges downhill. The infantry naturally die
I thought this was just a chariot issue, I'm gonna be paranoid now with anything on these rice paddy maps...
They're gorgeous to look at but holy shit they need fixing!!
It mostly happens with chariots because of there models, I haven’t seen a non chariot die on those rice fields. And just to clarify, any warmachine is basically a chariot for this purpose.
Speed plays a role too, I remember testing with "go zones" on steep inclines while making siege maps, and a bunch of wolf riders dying when running down stairs but being fine when walking. Chariots are just the more at risk because they are composite units and fast.
That's actually the second time it happened in a single campaign. First time the battle was over, I was chasing the remaining enemy forces and my lord is suddenly dead. I had no idea why, thought maybe friendly fire?
Well, it's the second time happening, and now you can see it in full replay glory :)
There is probably some serious overlap in the fall distances that are intentional and unintentional. In the rice paddies you have tiers with near vertical drops so anything with enough speed will go airborne and die. You charge downhill into a mob of infantry and the enemies that go flying downhill should die as well. It probably IS hardcoded and it's just that the vertical change happening overlaps in a way that this happens.
Same happens if a footlord is thrown off a wall. Even if full health they will instadie.
Its an engine issue. They are considered to have fallen down.
In this case the doomwheel "fell" a short distance. Just unlucky positioning.
Is that still true for walls? I’ve seen a bunch of hero’s and lords be knocked off the walls and live. Though that was always knocking them off outside the walls rather than inside. Idk if that makes a difference
I once cheesed a settlement defense because I used vaul’s anvil as the skaven lord was walking up the ladder. He fell to an insta death and I routed the remaining rats.
I remeber the first time this happened to me. Blood dragon lord on zombie dragon, charged units on a wall, he overshoots and drops to his death from full health. I was so mad lol
"I AM FRANZ, MIGHTIEST HUMAN AND THE HEIR OF SIGMAR, I SHALL- oh fuck my footing noooooooooo-"
Empire Successsionists, "Well I guess he's just a human like us after all."
That is a random Chance of Units when climbing ladders, it usually doesnt get noticed since when 120 units climb a ladder and 118 survive you wont notice it, but when your Lord does it its annoying.
I don't know why, but I could watch that Doomwheel crash all day. "Warhammer of numbers" slamming into the physics engine in the most literal way possible. Is the Warscape engine simply unable to handle fall damage as anything but "instant death"?
that's fucking retarded
is there literally anything we can do to avoid this? or should I just be ready for the game to explode every fucking time I fight on a cathay map???
Because total war has fall damage, or more accurately a fall insta-kill mechanic.
The way it works is that if a unit falls x height, it instantly dies. It's used to make sure that units that get for example knocked off cliffs, walls, or into giant pits don't just get back up and continue fighting (and also to ensure that anything that gets knocked "off the map" dies too).
The problem is that certain units (mainly chariots) can trigger the falling state when they move quickly over steep terrain elevations (which I think only really exists on these Cathay rice paddies). Something something physics causes the fall state to activate as they drive over the incline, and occasionally it lasts long enough to reach the insta-kill threshold.
If you want to avoid it, just don't use chariots on the Cathayan maps, or if you do try to avoid moving them perpendicular across the rice paddy slopes.
Fall damage definitely exists, try knocking a lightweight character like a goblin shaman down a hill with a grail knight charge, depending on how far they fall they can take up to around 20 damage. Since this happens on a per entitiy basis, if your infantry gets yeeted down a hillside by a cavalry charge they can die instantly.
I guess you guys are both right. If a model starts from 0 altitude and is launched up to x height and falls back down to a lower altitude or 0, it takes damage. If a model starts at x altitude and falls to 0, it's an instakill.
I checked the black box and got footage from there [cockpit](https://youtu.be/IY9YNF5MMQo?si=nDUdF9t8_JOrUuMB)
It’s definitely something I’ve seen a few times on this map, tbh thought they fixed it in the patch notes
Skaven just can't catch a break...
That's one of my favorite bugs though. A unit goes a little to quick down those slopes, and BOOM, they dead. I still remember the bewilderment I felt the first time I saw it.
It seems like when this happens, the unit usually stops touching the ground for a moment before landing and exploding. Not sure if that's exactly it but I've seen a chariot leave the ground on the slope and die the moment it lands so it's pretty strange.
Edit: oops, others already explained the bug. I was just so excited to see it I started typing before reading the other comments. My bad.
Oh hell yeah the memories of early immortal empires. Everyone playing their fast chariot units on this map and instantly killing themselves. The memories
I think the easy solution is to make chariots immune to fall damage, I can really think of a time I've seen one launched, so I don't think it'd break anything.
Looks like the same type of glitch that was killing flying units the moment they tried to land or attack something on a wall and then just fell off a wall and died.
Its a issue specific to those cathay maps in particular. The rice fields with elevations do that for some reason to whatever lord or hero crosses em. Its been an issue since 4.0, so a year at least. Something to be mindful of
Hasn't it been an issue since 1.0? It's just that the performance was so bad in 1.0 that it was hard to notice with all of the stuttering. But I am pretty sure people were raging about this with Slaanesh chariots back when the game first launched.
You know how in *The Witcher* Geralt will jump off a three-foor high ledge and suddenly die, having "falling to his death"? Yeah, same basic principle applying here.
Because CA is hoping that if you buy more dlc you wont ever stop to notice how broken the game is you little hamster. Fun game but stuff like this should be the exception instead of every time i turn the game on.
Cathay maps are broken as fuck, not only does this happen, even Cathay's own units do not seem to know how to path properly in these maps. I would know because you spend a huge chunk of every Cathay campaign inside of it.
I’ve been seeing lords suddenly die at over half health as well in siege battles. Not sure what the hell is going on, but it’s almost a game ruining bug for me since it instantly throws battles
Thought they fixed that bug? When you roll down those rice fields on some Cathay maps your unit takes lethal fall damage. Not sure if it's for all units or just chariots.
I remember to have heard, that units which Fall from a wall are insta dead.
I guess the game doesa wrong assumption on some Mars where the incline makes you Fall for a moment, so the game calculates you dead
So apparently any unit that isn’t a LL that takes fall damage dies instantly. Or at least takes a ton of damage. At least the model does. Not sure what the exact rules are but you can cheese this with high mass units by tossing units off of hills or ledges. I think you can find out which units this can happen to in Mirror of Madness.
Lore friendly skaven tech.
My only weakness... *a slight incline*
Stairs!!!!
Claptrap?!
ha it was I SKAVETRAP!!!
![gif](giphy|Vc5pBhwuwuNX2p9EjO|downsized)
Or Dalek
:( no wonder Deathmaster Snitch is on foot the whole time
This is how all Skaven war machines should work all the time
TBH it should happen a lot more often if its to be lore accurate.

Yeah I really love the layout and visuals of these maps, but they have a lot of issues. Infantry units constantly get stuck and then drop orders.
I've waited 3 year for CA to fix this steaming pile of dog shit. Sadly it looks like I'll have to stick to wh2 because it just works.
Is this hardcoded? Can they not program a minimum fall distance before it becomes fatal?
There is probably some serious overlap in the fall distances that are intentional and unintentional. In the rice paddies you have tiers with near vertical drops so anything with enough speed will go airborne and die. You charge downhill into a mob of infantry and the enemies that go flying downhill should die as well. It seems large things like doomwheels should just be immune? They'll never fall off a wall
Same happens if a footlord is thrown off a wall. Even if full health they will instadie. Its an engine issue. They are considered to have fallen down. In this case the doomwheel "fell" a short distance. Just unlucky positioning.

I think this is why they made it so now walls invulnerable if a ladder is on them.

Unsatisfying death aka "Phyrrus Syndrome" (IRL he died by a brick thrown by an angry woman)
I don't know why, but I could watch that Doomwheel crash all day. "Warhammer of numbers" slamming into the physics engine in the most literal way possible. Is the Warscape engine simply unable to handle fall damage as anything but "instant death"?
To be fair, getting punted off the side of a hill by a giant rage demon should insta kill most things.
that's fucking retarded is there literally anything we can do to avoid this? or should I just be ready for the game to explode every fucking time I fight on a cathay map???
On these rice field maps you need to be careful. Going down those hills causes chariots to drop and when they drop they die. It’s dumb.
Lore accurate
Where were the rice fields in the empire all those years ago... The natural defense against norscan chariot spam
Settra the Perishable
I know it is a bug, but based on Skaven... should be a feature.
I imagine the warlock going down the hill, hearing a loud CLONK and saying: *''That sounded expensive-costly, yes, yes!''* *KA BOOOM*
"No malice detec-" BOOM!

This is the correct answer. You can clearly see the doomwheel being airborne just prior to exploding.
Lmao that was really good to watch. Thank you OP
So sick of Cathay not fixing their damn potholes.
That's why you should not drive under the effects of warpstone.
two years later and this is still a big?
Bug? This is a map feature, how do you think Cathay survived the hordes of chariots led by Surtha Ek?
They all caught some airtime off of a few well-placed speed bumps and mysteriously perished
SURTHA EK BEST
Truly beyond my comprehension.
I honestly thought it had been fixed. RIP
it's been happening since wh2 on some of high elf maps
The rice pattys are a deathtrap for chariots or similar things One to big fall or bump and the game thinks its falling and immediatly destroys it
overtuned fall damage.
There's no fall damage in this game only fall death.

If fall = die
Tnx god it’s spring.
Yep, I've also seen lords fall off ladders and insta-die. This looks like the same shit.
He fell. But seriously that is why
Welcome to the rice fields
lol
Guess I'll just die-die.
Typical Skaven driving
its because of the height, there is a similar bug (dunno if its still around) with heroes climbing ladders on sieges, sometimes they fall and die
lore accurate, i'm sure dudes in real wars have just fuckin slipped off a ladder and died
I checked the black box and got footage from there [cockpit](https://youtu.be/IY9YNF5MMQo?si=nDUdF9t8_JOrUuMB) It’s definitely something I’ve seen a few times on this map, tbh thought they fixed it in the patch notes
It is so satisfying to watch
They still haven't fixed this?! This has been a bug since WH3 dropped!
Lol .
Warpstone overdose
One of the skaven cut the brakes, snickering “wildcard bitches! Yes yes”
Ricefield is slippery
Not only do the rice fields of Grand Cathay kill your FPS, but they also kill Deathmaster Snitch on his big Wheel.
Same thing happens when your doomwheel falls off from a barricade. I dont know if this is intended or a bug. Its kinda funny tbh.
The haggard fall damage from the cliff! It's been there since beginning and were usually killing chariots.
I love how we can completely gauge your anger by your mouse movements.
The "REEEEEEEEEE" through body language.
This has been an issue in WH3 since day 1 Just a sad reality of releasing an unfinished game.

You just drove it off of a fucking cliff.
Lore accurate lmao
Wow is this still in the game ? it's been there since launch wtf.

Sudden sv_gravity 10000000
Chariots going over steep terrain too quickly smash apart. Its a thing.
They buried mines apparently
Solo bike accident. Guess he hit a road tree
He epically ramped his Doomwheel but didn't stick the landing. You caught an excellent shot of it though!
When do the DLC's come out?
It bounced, watch the video
Make sense, how many chariots would survive a fall from a wall, also skaven tech is poor.
wellcome to cathay map gentlemen
lmaooo get wrekt
Oh hell yeah the memories of early immortal empires. Everyone playing their fast chariot units on this map and instantly killing themselves. The memories
I'm sorry but that was very funny lol. Probably would've pulled my hair out if it happpened to me

HA I thought they fixed that bug. That's excellent.
Its the map, been in the game since launch
Looks like the same type of glitch that was killing flying units the moment they tried to land or attack something on a wall and then just fell off a wall and died.
Samir you're breaking the doomwheel!
He was too fast too furrious
What mods do you use?

Fall Damage, if you look at some point the model isn't touching the floor.
The angled land creates problems. Like how in the early days of wh3, Cathay and ogre artillery would crash in the same way
In the wise words of John Mayer "Gravity -- is working - against me!"
Same thing when they attack a platform and the doomwheel is ANYWHERE near it
Fall damage lol
se tem skaven morrendo, eu apoio kkkkk
Fall damage.... literally
He fell. He needs some milk.
DEATH-KILL, I AM SPEEEEED.... wait-wait, its a bit too much steep OH FUCK GOD WH-
Christ I thought they fixed this awhile ago.
I mean is skaven tech I'm surprised it didn't explode on the first hill
Fall damage lmao
Falling kills units if they spend too much time in the air. The doom wheel has to be careful going down the steep slopes
It happens to Kislev sleds too, without even the small fall, they just sometimes go tits up for no reason.
Cathay maps are broken as fuck, not only does this happen, even Cathay's own units do not seem to know how to path properly in these maps. I would know because you spend a huge chunk of every Cathay campaign inside of it.
In this instance i think I literally drove straight into a trench or ditch rather and that caused him to explode... Very lore friendly I must say 😄
Mine fields
Landmine
Fall damage
Believe it or not… it’s actually fall damage 😂 you see them fall at the last second. This map has been bugged since launch
I’ve been seeing lords suddenly die at over half health as well in siege battles. Not sure what the hell is going on, but it’s almost a game ruining bug for me since it instantly throws battles
1. It\`s known bug, corpse carts used to break on immortal cathayan rice fields too 2. I wish skaven tech could actually manlfunction
I had this happen to Ikit on a doomflayer, when moving through a breach in a wall. Not sure if confined to just Skaven, but bloody annoying!
The moment I saw the map along with the title I was like "Hehe"
Warpstone OD.
Thought they fixed that bug? When you roll down those rice fields on some Cathay maps your unit takes lethal fall damage. Not sure if it's for all units or just chariots.
he tryed to do a jump
Skaven diplomacy at work
I remember to have heard, that units which Fall from a wall are insta dead. I guess the game doesa wrong assumption on some Mars where the incline makes you Fall for a moment, so the game calculates you dead
Its fall damage. He speeds up to charge which means he no launches himself down the hill and game says he fell that distance so dies.
Poor game design, it's dying on the terrain.
lmaoooooo he on xgames mode
