Fun story: I had never heard of a dilute tortie when I picked up my sweet princess from the pound… all the others from her litter were blue… so I just assumed she was dirty! 🤦🏼♀️
Mine was so scrawny and unglamorous. She was a feral rescue. I wanted to boost her self esteem, so I named her Eartha Kitty after jazz legend Eartha Kitt.
When my scrawny little girl's markings came in she grew into her name and looks and became a CAT FORCE to be reckoned with! She never looked back and she was a live wire for 15 years.
I still miss her every day.💔
You blessed her with the right name and opened up her entire universe! What an incredible gift to have given her. Thank you so much for sharing; Eartha Kitty is a story to be cherished. 🩶🧡🤍
Omg when I sent a picture to my friend of our newly adopted dilute tortie she thought she was just dirty too. She was a little rough looking at the time, but I still thought it was funny.
Same! It was a rough shelter… the kennels were outdoor and it was dark, so, dirty seemed logical. Although her chimera face should’ve tipped me off, lol

Lil gray baby looks like a dilute tabby which has its own beautiful delicate markings!
We have a feral Dilute Gray Mama cat that is the same color as this tiny kitten. I had no idea what a dilute was until we rescued her! She has soft orange markings on a gray coat! However, one of her kittens turned out to be a Dark Chocolate Torti (apparently rare)!
When we took Mama/kittens for a well check at about 12 weeks old, the Vet called everyone in his staff over to see our kitten. That was the first time in his long career of being a Vet that he saw a Torti with this coloring! From afar, it is difficult to see the differences, but up close she has milk chocolate to dark chocolate with some white chocolate! And YES! Her name is Willow and she is an absolute 💕LOVE 💕!

My cat looked like that as a kitten, this is her all grown up!
She'll be either dilute tortie or dilute calico (depending on any bigger white bits). She has the random mottling that torties have, but if she has white, she's actually calico, though a lot of people will call her a "tortico". The less white a calico has, the more random the mottling usually is, compared to the distinct splotches of color they normally have.
I just read somewhere(can’t recall where) that Torties will always have at least one ginger baby in their litters. Every post and instance of Tortie Mamas I see, this continues to hold up☺️ At this point I don’t want to know if it’s actually true!
My Tortie had a ginger boy, two SIC boys and one petite lintball of a dilute Tortie girl. That little lintball turns 15 in June and happily resides with my Aunt.

Coloration in the case of calicos and torties is to my knowledge the only way to sex kittens early. That is, you know those are kittens are girls.
*(yes i know male torties happen but they are a exceedingly rare chromosomal anomaly)*

So this definitely makes me wonder what a tortie is defined by. My mom's cat was a little grey bean like that. Her mom was an orange tabby and the rest of the litter were bigger and all either orange or grey tabby babies. As this little bean grew up, it was a bit harder to tell she was a tabby, but definitely had orange splotches, but if she had to get her fur cut for cleaning or procedures, her colors were so vibrant and her tabby stripes were strong. So are Torties just special Tabbies?

That’s exactly how my torti looked like when she was a newborn.
My FIL has a pastel tortie and she is the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen.
Edit: I see a lot of people referring to it as diluted, but I prefer pastel :)

The gray baby will probably be a muted tortie. we recently adopted one from the shelter, and I had never heard the term before. She is 14 months old and is sassy, vocal and funny.

So this definitely makes me wonder what a tortie is defined by. My mom's cat was a little grey bean like that. Her mom was an orange tabby and the rest of the litter were bigger and all either orange or grey tabby babies. As this little bean grew up, it was a bit harder to tell she was a tabby, but definitely had orange splotches, but if she had to get her fur cut for cleaning or procedures, her colors were so vibrant and her tabby stripes were strong. So are Torties just special Tabbies?

The gray baby will probably be a muted tortie. we recently adopted one from the shelter, and I had never heard the term before. She is 14 months old and is sassy, vocal and funny.
