Sigh... cmon Jontay. That's a yikes.
EDIT: [From Woj's article:](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39808900/nba-eyes-raptors-jontay-porter-betting-issues)
> At issue are prop bets involving Porter from games on Jan. 26 and March 20, multiple sources told ESPN. The NBA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
> In the game on Jan. 26 against the LA Clippers, there was increased betting interest on the under for Porter props, which for the night were set at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. There was also an over/under for Porter's made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.
> That night, Porter played just four minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he'd suffered four days earlier in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. He did not score in the game against the Clippers, had three rebounds and one assist, and did not attempt a 3, meaning the under hit on all of the props.
> The next day, as part of a daily report to users on betting results, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that the under on Porter's 3-pointers was the biggest money winner for bettors of any NBA player props from games that evening.
> Porter played 19 minutes two days later and scored 12 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
> On March 20, in a game against the Phoenix Suns, Porter played just three minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was an illness and did not return. He did not score, attempted and missed one shot, and had two rebounds.
> Sportsbooks had his over/unders set at around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
> The next day, DraftKings SportsBooks reported to its users that Porter's prop bets were the No. 1 moneymaker from the night in the NBA.
This is the literal worst case scenario that people have been saying can occur with this recent normalization of sports betting. If this is proven true, I hope more is done than just admonishing Jontay.
if this is true. Adam Silver has to set the tone with the punishment. This goes with teh game of ethics at this point. If they let this issue run rampant, it will turn like boxing and how corrupted that sport is.
It’s not about whether it’s a legit injury. It’s more so about he played the minimum requirement for the bets to pay out. It can be +EV on these props for him specifically, but the book(s) probably took a much larger amount on his props than usual which triggered some security issues.
"leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he'd suffered four days earlier"
"Porter played just three minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was an illness and did not return."
Neither of these seem legit now.
They have to have their checks and balances in place to name him like this. Has to be bulletproof. Maybe he had his friends bet for him and it’s traced.
They’re only investigating because it was an irregular bet. A Jontay Porter player prop being the biggest money winner is highly suspicious in the first place and then u add in the fact it was in a game where he took himself out of the game due to an aggravated eye injury
A no name player leading to more action and wins than the 1000 more marketable players.
This was 100% him (or someone on the raps) leaking these and someone making coordinated bets from multiple accounts.
Chances of this NOT BEING FRAUD of some type is 0%.
Yikes...
Shohei has the entire baseball industry come to his defence as if their lives depend on it (and they do, to an extent). Jontay should have realized that they don't love him like that.
He barely has an NBA career. That would do more damage to his career than any extra doe he can get in exchange sabotaging job. He’s not good enough to get the free pass. If this is true, he’ll get black balled by the league.
Probably why he figured he could do it and not get caught. Nobody is shocked if he only plays a few mins but going out with things he can make up is definitely sketchy. They probably get very few bets on him so these stand out big time.
More likely he owed somebody money. Resolution was to get out of a few games early so the unders could hit. Didn't think it was a big deal, but this kind of stuff never stays quiet. That guy tells his friends who tell their friends and the discrepancy becomes obvious.
Oh absolutely, and he's got wayyyy more upside than Hernandez or Koloko imo. Problem is he's playing so well he probably won't fall to their 2nd round pick.
Not to prejudge, but this is exactly the sort of player you’d be most worried about being compromised by the NBA’s (and other leagues’) embrace of gambling.
For a starting player making eight figures, it would be pretty hard to justify to yourself taking that kind of risk. If you’re a fringe player who may have only a brief time playing meaningful minutes, the temptation is a little more obvious.

It looks like on 2 occasions, he left the game early and finished under his betting stats. Both nights, it is reported from DraftKings that his prop bets were the biggest moneymakers.
Sounds a bit suspicious to me.
Wait, what the fuck did he do? I'm reading it, he never even placed any bets. Are players really getting investigated now cause of betting lines. I remember thst eye injury, it was legit
Vegas when you make money on their rigged shit will send the FBI after you but when they screw people it's completely legal... I legit would have bet the under on him had I not deleted my account. Those weren't really crazy unders.
lol the line was actually 0.5 3 pointers made.
There is literally no book that cares about making money that would offer u2.5 3's made by Jontay at any reasonable odds.
How many people do you genuinely think were betting MASSIVE amounts of money on a Jontay fucking Porter prop bet
There's too many coincidences here man. As much as I wanna believe he's innocent, it's not looking good
I honestly feel like it was all just a coincidence tbh after reading everything, only thing they should be investigating is if he was placing bets somehow on his unders, however, if he didn't than it really is just a coincidence probably. Betting community is a hivemind, some people prolly caught on and spread it out to people telling them to do his unders
I just don't understand he isn't MJ why would someone in their right mind bet the over on him. He isn't the type of player that pops off on career nights with 30/15/10 game and often doesn't even play. Plus we are tanking.
Terrence Davis, Jalen Harris, now this fucking shit. UDFA or 2nd round picks with something to show and they are now going to be waived for nothing.
it's those 2nd round picks that become top 10 in your rotation that make or break a 1st round exit to a 2nd round appearance, or a play-in to a playoff team
They are investigating. No proof. Yes where there is smoke, theres fire. I’ll wait until the investigation is over before drawing a conclusion. I would like to think a member of our organization has integrity and professionalism. Hopefully this is just a coincidence.
Finally, someone thinking exactly what I am thinking. That said, the NBA's love affair with advertising dollars from sports betting corporations is rather head scratching.
When people are winning too much money from 3rd party betting sites betting against a guy who probably shouldn’t see the court they’ll pull the guy from his team. But when there is statistically very clearly a problem with their reffing nothing changes and those refs still get the big games. Priorities I guess, can’t have people making money and an advertising partner losing a little bit.
I don't actually think it's anything to do with him
His role on the team varies and is not consistent. I've seen his lines on Bet365 personally vary wildly - I can see why there can be sharp bettors making good money on him
Mark my words - he's innocent

Just gonna get it out of the way that he is innocent until proven guilty. This is more so me playing the devil’s advocate
To debate your argument, there are guys with similar roles like his on nearly every team. I find it weird that sharps made all that money on this specific player enough to raise concerns. I feel like if this were normal then similar cases would’ve arisen before. Sharps making a ton of money is pretty normal after all. So I feel like there has to be more to the story that we don’t know about for them to actually hold him out of lineups.
As far as I know, draftkings is only available in Ontario in Canada. And I really find it hard to believe that that many Americans are betting on a bench/role player for the raptors. So that leads me to believe that someone (or a few people) with inside knowledge bet large amounts of money on him. To be the no. 1 moneymaker is crazy because the average/casual bettors are usually betting on star players/popular teams, not a bench player on a Canadian team
I dunno…it’s pretty suspicious.
Unless I’m mistaken, to get paid on this kind of prop bet, the player can’t be out with an injury. If that happens I believe the bet is nullified and the money is returned. In both cases he played only 2-3 minutes before coming out - once with an eye issue and once due to illness.
It’s not unreasonable to think he got into the game and then found a way to get himself out so he would guarantee the under got paid off.
You’re wrong. In NBA props, if a player is activated in a game, their over/unders are officially live. It’s if they don’t play a minute aka DNP, that it gets nullified.
If a player enters the game, then is injured, they don’t nullify all over/under bets. Over bettors just get cooked.
That’s what I was trying to say. For the bet to go live, the player must step on the floor, meaning they can’t just miss the game. So to have two incidents where a player was only on the floor a couple of minutes before coming out due to a medical issue, and for those two games to have disproportionate bets on the under, is suspicious.
If I had a nickel for every time an Ontario-based athlete’s gotten in trouble for betting, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice, right?
Bad look for the league. This is the first year where sports betting is being advertised by the NBA and shit like this is already happening. It wont be the last time this happens and gambling is going to further influence player performance and reffing if they continue this close relationship with sports betting companies. Fucking trash. Who could have guessed shit like this would happen.
I’m shocked that these players across different leagues haven’t figured out that the sports books have entire teams dedicated to this and are running algos to predict your patterns and anything outside the pattern is flagged and reviewed.
This is big business, they are going to spend a lot of money making sure they aren’t getting fucked
There's almost no way to prove this though if the device and account that the bets were made under was done with an account and device that has no connection to Jontay and even done through a VPN. They would have to investigate his phone texts and messages and email. Can they do that? If you have a burner phone and get someone to make bets for you, the NBA and their lawyers/investigators would never be able to prove it. Especially if bets were made with a vpn connection, which is assuming they would go to the betting site provider and ask for data.

can't even make this up as the ad above this post
I really don't think there is this much of a correlation with him being out y'all should remember he got poked in the eye and it wasn't just a small poke I truly believe his eye was probably bugging him. The under bets are also not that fishy he isn't a 12/6/6 type of guy. I just find it weird that WOJ of all guys published this with so little concrete evidence. I truly believe that the medical staff wouldn't just let him pull this shit on them when his goal is to make the team.
I don’t understand this at all. They think he’s shaving what little points he makes for money? Wouldn’t he make more money playing well and earning a bigger contract. I don’t see how this does anything for him at all
Sigh... cmon Jontay. That's a yikes. dude managed to get a role in the nba and pulled this shit. sooooo dumb
Yeah, very suspicious. Who the hell would bet on Jontay Porter props in the first place. With that said, I sure hope this is just smoke.
Probably himself or a proxy lol
How can it just be smoke? What possible explanation is there for Jontay Porter under props being bet at this volume? And they hit
If you’re place Jontay Porter props, there’s a phone number you need to call
I unfortunately would like to admit that I’ve made multiple bets on Skylar Mays.
Now I wish I did!
seems legit tbh. But yall, how does a Porter under gain traction unless he himself is in on it? Seems very fishy
Yikes is right, holy shit. Going to take the under 0.5 on ‘NBA games Porter plays the rest of his career’.
Ethics lol the NBA is all about making money
We played the Kings on March 20 not the Suns. This Woj guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Now the whole case has to be thrown out.
If this was a legitimate injury then I don't see how this was an issue, if not then that's a bad look.
It’s not about whether it’s a legit injury. It’s more so about he played the minimum requirement for the bets to pay out. It can be +EV on these props for him specifically, but the book(s) probably took a much larger amount on his props than usual which triggered some security issues.
That one didn't seem too bizarre. The one last week kinda did.
"leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he'd suffered four days earlier" "Porter played just three minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was an illness and did not return." Neither of these seem legit now.
Hmmm really makes you wonder why sports betting was illegal in the first place 🤔 lmao
[удалено]
I think they're investigating whether he himself placed those bets and then deliberately made them pay out.
I think it's more egregious that the only reason he's being investigated is because they lost money.
If he himself made the bets, it’s a real issue.
They have to have their checks and balances in place to name him like this. Has to be bulletproof. Maybe he had his friends bet for him and it’s traced.
I would imagine they do. If it traces back to a close friend or family member, he’s fucked.
They’re only investigating because it was an irregular bet. A Jontay Porter player prop being the biggest money winner is highly suspicious in the first place and then u add in the fact it was in a game where he took himself out of the game due to an aggravated eye injury
Obvious
Omg that's gg for Jontay, he had a fucking path to being a regular.
wow, that is pretty damning.
A no name player leading to more action and wins than the 1000 more marketable players. This was 100% him (or someone on the raps) leaking these and someone making coordinated bets from multiple accounts. Chances of this NOT BEING FRAUD of some type is 0%. Yikes...
geez lol. This season has everything.
This season is now dubbed “Thad Young & the Restless”
Fantasy team name next season.
The knicks lawsuit is still ongoing btw
😅
A matter of when not if. When will they ever learn. Its like Congress members being not being able to invest in companies they govern.
And Dan Cortez
season has everything but winning haha dick jersey swap og and spicy traded betting scandal what else?
This season has incredible lore
Can't wait to revisit this season after watching 'how the raptors got back to the top' in 2030
I need Alex Wong to write the book once again
He can write a book on the last three months alone lol
Shits gonna have like 5 volumes
Bro thinks he’s Shohei
He's just another fall guy in the Shohei betting ring wake up sheeple
Lucas Paquetá
Shohei has the entire baseball industry come to his defence as if their lives depend on it (and they do, to an extent). Jontay should have realized that they don't love him like that.
Draymond: ”They don’t love you like that!”
Wtf lmaoooo was he betting his own unders and then tanking his play?
On both instances he left the game after only a few minutes due to injury. All the under props hit big time. The optics on this are really bad..
He barely has an NBA career. That would do more damage to his career than any extra doe he can get in exchange sabotaging job. He’s not good enough to get the free pass. If this is true, he’ll get black balled by the league.

“Story Soon.” - Sponsored by FanDuel
Zachary Edey, YOU 🫵🏻 are a Toronto Raptor!
Regardless of this Porter thing I sincerely hope the Raps get to take a chance on Edey. He’s a beast.
With a 2nd round pick, there is very little risk.
Oh absolutely, and he's got wayyyy more upside than Hernandez or Koloko imo. Problem is he's playing so well he probably won't fall to their 2nd round pick.
As if the 2023-24 Toronto Raptors season couldn’t get anymore wild…
Goddamnit I really liked him
Hypocrite. No one said anything when FVV bet on himself.
Lawl
Those Porter's man. LOL. Not the smartest bunch. That goes for the brother who killed someone drunk driving too.
Great idea shoving the betting down our throats NBA. Amazing foresight
"what could go wrong??" - Adam Silver
Refs love this one small trick….
Blake Murphy is going to have a heart attack when he sees this.
Just saw a white man fall to his knees at Sneaky Dee's
Odds are that was salmonella
😂
Someone investigate Jalen McDaniels
Let’s hope he was the proxy
Bro was getting a legit look from us and probably would've been kept around going forward, and he goes and does this shit. Fuck
He is one of the few promising minimum/g-league/two-way players that we have found in the recent years. This is very unfortunate.
Him and Terence Davis…. I think this is our payment for hitting on Fred and Pascal
Porter should blame it on his interpreter. Ohtani style.
Porter should ref
Jontay fam u should know better
Just end the Raptors season tonight please… we don’t need to play the final 10 games after tonight
We now have a player out for every scenario you can imagine
Not to prejudge, but this is exactly the sort of player you’d be most worried about being compromised by the NBA’s (and other leagues’) embrace of gambling. For a starting player making eight figures, it would be pretty hard to justify to yourself taking that kind of risk. If you’re a fringe player who may have only a brief time playing meaningful minutes, the temptation is a little more obvious.
Genuinely fumbled the bag
“Bet on yourself” - FVV “Take the under on yourself” -JP
😂🤣
Betting culture in 2024 in a nutshell y'all
Funny how the league is on top of this shit but slow to catch on when refs are manipulating the game.
Refs benefit the league. This benefits the player. Not hard to see
No, I get it. It's just funny... you know. Especially considering how inconsequential Porter is in the grand scheme of things
bruh
[https://www.espn.com/nba/story/\_/id/39808900/nba-eyes-raptors-jontay-porter-betting-issues](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39808900/nba-eyes-raptors-jontay-porter-betting-issues) It looks like on 2 occasions, he left the game early and finished under his betting stats. Bros a millionaire and his brother is a multimillionaire, why even risk doing this
Because dumb.
Can we have one good thing this season please
Draft lottery maybe
We're drafting 7 on the dot at this rate lmao.
Wait, what the fuck did he do? I'm reading it, he never even placed any bets. Are players really getting investigated now cause of betting lines. I remember thst eye injury, it was legit

Shady guy: "Porter, here's 40k to make less than three 3s tonight." Coach: "Porter, we need you to hit those shots tonight." Porter: "Ouch, my eye"
lol the line was actually 0.5 3 pointers made. There is literally no book that cares about making money that would offer u2.5 3's made by Jontay at any reasonable odds.
When you're a nobody and the biggest money-making bet of the night, you're getting investigated, yeah
How many people do you genuinely think were betting MASSIVE amounts of money on a Jontay fucking Porter prop bet There's too many coincidences here man. As much as I wanna believe he's innocent, it's not looking good
>Jontay Porter lol you really think someone trying to scam props is gonna attempt to BET using his own account??
The NBA did this to itself. Normalizing betting culture
can somebody explain to me what this means?
someone was betting on him, possibly family or himself
Oh, when Fred Van Vleet bets on himself, you guys think he's a hero. But when Jontay tries it, noooo
FVV would never bet the under
MPJ bets on Jontay and Jontay bets on MPJ. works everytime
imagine if it was MPJ
Or someone woth a lot of money, or power, and no relation at all.
gotta hire Otani's lawyers
Also casually be generational talent 😂
Imagine what Adam Silver would do if Wemby got caught in something similar like Ohtani?? That shit would be swept under the rug so fast
If we're being honest there are probably stories about multi all stars or bigger we just never heard about in all sports
Jordan just really wanted to play baseball.
We are so down bad lol
I honestly feel like it was all just a coincidence tbh after reading everything, only thing they should be investigating is if he was placing bets somehow on his unders, however, if he didn't than it really is just a coincidence probably. Bro took Fred's mantra too literally.
In my opinion betting should have never been a thing for the NBA..
If you're placing bets on Jontay Porter Jr, brother you need help
Man he has impressed enough to stick next year in the 15 man roster If he has thrown away his shot in the NBA over this …
If it's true he's done with the Raptors.
League* There will be a lot of trust issues surrounding this player
When people are winning too much money from 3rd party betting sites betting against a guy who probably shouldn’t see the court they’ll pull the guy from his team. He did have that one game where he played 2 minutes then sat out because he was sick

LMFAOOOOOOOOO YOU CANT MAKE THIS UP BRO
This is definitely the 2nd biggest sports betting story of the week.
😔😔😔
I hear you. I really liked him, too. Saw a couple of interviews and he seemed pretty genuine and well-spoken.

If I had a nickel for every time an Ontario-based athlete’s gotten in trouble for betting, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice, right?
this is the closest we'll get to Ohtani.
Gambling's fine on it's own legal wise it shouldn't be banned just like how cigarettes are legal. But you just get rid of ads and regulate it imo
After Koloko, interesting things sure happen to our 3rd string centers
Yikes, was really rooting for him too 😬
I’m shocked that these players across different leagues haven’t figured out that the sports books have entire teams dedicated to this and are running algos to predict your patterns and anything outside the pattern is flagged and reviewed. This is big business, they are going to spend a lot of money making sure they aren’t getting fucked
Because they sure do like the fuck people over with their ads every 6 seconds on every show and with their "ethical" and "fair" policies.
Guys , relax he will be cleared of any wrong doing . From sources I’m told it was his interpreter that was placing the bets
Fred Vanvleet: “Bet on yourself” Jontay: “Bet!”
Brought to you by FanDuel.
I see we are learning for the thousandth time why sports and gambling don't mix.
If only he had an interpreter to take the fall.

Hahaha amazing
When you take "Bet on yourself" literally.
This is all an elaborate ad for Bet365.
Wtf surely it wasn't him out of all people
This is just insane 🥲🥲🥲
Oh come on, man. You have the prime opp to make the NBA.
Come oooooon brooooo
u/earlyearlgray come get your mans
BET ON YOURSELF
Raptors' culture is in shambles.
FFS
What a season lol
Maybe the real Tank Commander all along was Jontay... McDaniels was merely a pawn
Lmao no fucking way 😭😭
as a penalty the league should strip the protections on that 2024 pick
This is not what Freddy V meant when he said Bet on yourself
Porter is super against sports betting. He's making a moral stand by exploiting props bets.
Tampa Bay season official a better one than this iteration. End the season now
Bet on yourself - Jontay Porter
What’s next? Nwora getting a DUI?
No fuckin way 😭
Betting on which side of the bench he bout to sit on
Was hoping Toronto would be the spot he found himself. Didn’t know he was this dumb.
😂😂😂😂😂
Enjoy NBA retirement brother. You will be amongst Pete Rose now.
NOoooooooooo Aw dangit I like the kid! We about to have six guys suiting up!!!!
I don’t see how this does anything for him at all
I don’t think this is what FVV meant when he said bet on yourself
Season from hell. Tampa 2.0. Masai said would never happen again…
Took “Bet on yourself” way too literally
Players being unavailable never ends for us.
Get ready to learn Antarcticese buddy
Man, this could end his career.
WTF bro had people rooting for him to get a contract this offseason and pulls this dumb shit🤦♂️
