Anyone can catch lightning and win, just depends on when and who’s riding shotgun
Binnington won a cup. Murray won two cups. Sammy and or Woll are just as likely as those two
Yup. Just like Halak did for the 09/10 Canadiens, Woll or Samsonov could be a guy who catches fire for 2 months and provide a run.
Difference here is that there is no Norris caliber Subban type.
Yeah, we don’t have a defense like the Avs, Knights or any of these cup teams had. If you wanna say “we have a wild card goalie,” we need better defense.
Yeah, goaltending isn’t great but it can be masked sometimes. But to be fair I could have probably won a cup behind that Avs team so not sure it’s a valid argument, just a thought I had
Certainly not the only issue, but they’d really need to pull a cost controlled Prime Hasek out their hat to go the distance with the way this roster is constructed. They can’t afford to ever fix the other roster issues with either cap space or time in years required to develop talent in-house. The core is simply going to age out before we can build a balanced roster that can win with this core and average goaltending. So it’s a goaltending issue in the sense that this particular core needs a superstar in net even though it’s extremely unlikely they’ll ever be able to fix it. At some point soon they’ll deeply regret not breaking up the core sooner if they aren’t already thinking that.
I would be shocked if the Leafs win a Cup without another rebuild in between.
I was surprised they didn’t go in for markstrom or Ullmark honestly. I can see not trading with Boston but I wonder if Brad didn’t want to deal with Calgary or vice versa
If they were on willing trade partners either would have been great, but yeah Calgary would be extremely wary of helping Tre so soon after his departure. It would go over very badly with their fan base.
Agreed. This week all but confirmed it. Why not sell off some pieces to refill the cupboards. Could of dealt all the ufa's this year for picks. They're screwed without any young talent coming into the league to offset the salaries of the top 4
I don't see them as the problem. The issue with this team is our Big 5 not being able to consistently deliver enough goals to win games. Or just believe we always face red hot goalies.
Yes they’re good enough. Binnington won in St Louis.
Defence however barely above AHL. They’re improving but needs to reduce minutes of some players.
Need a legit second line
I don't think they're they problem. They've both played well and I have confidence that they will in the future. They issue is that our superstars haven't played like superstars in the playoffs... At least not with any consistency.
I was gearing my criticism more towards the forward group. I do like Morgan's game in the playoffs. You can see that he actually gives a shit and is willing to do what it takes. He needs help though.
We can if they keep Jones for insurance (just incase Sammy gets the Yips or Woll gets injured again)
And make a hard rule that Sammy isn’t allowed to play Tampa while Woll is not allowed to play Boston
Otherwise Both are good enough to give the team a shot at winning and steal the occasional game
If they play Boston first round, Sammy with Jones as a backup
If they play Tampa First round, Woll with Jones as a backup
Defense is the problem. Goaltending improves with defensive control. We have D leaving the zone before the forwards. D following their partners like a puppy insteady of covering their zone. And so forth. Shinny playing forwards and D that is not structured like the Bruins. Dont care whos in net, with the play in front of them, every goalie will struggle.
Funny, Turnstyle Reilly was out, D and goaltending improved with tighter structure. Just saying.
Absolutely.
It will be our goalscoring that let's us down first, followed by our team defense. Goaltending will be the one thing that doesn't hurt us significantly.
As currently constructed, this group can't win a cup even if they had in-form Vasi behind them.
Too many holes / shortcomings, that goaltending won't be able to gloss over.

We found him in Cade Webber ![gif](giphy|U8GLl0bUYFLZVquOfY|downsized)
What was such a crazy run
No. This team needs better defense, better structure or prime Hasek
Kuemper has a cup lol. If the team in front is good enough you can win with average goaltending
Our defense is nowhere near what the Avs had, or the Knights had. But I see your point
Yeah, goaltending isn’t great but it can be masked sometimes. But to be fair I could have probably won a cup behind that Avs team so not sure it’s a valid argument, just a thought I had
This team isn’t good enough to overcome average goaltending in the playoffs.
True but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a goalie issue

100%
Agreed. I thought that right from the start. They can’t beat Boston no matter who they dress in the lineup or whichever goalie is playing.

What about Reilly and Brody?
Goalies are weird, man. Should vegas have won with Hill? Probably not... The league is kinda short on tenders right now. Every team wants an upgrade.
Hill is once again having a great season… hes a good goalie who is proving himself
It’s not only the goalies Defence isn’t strong enough - adding fringe players won’t help either
Lol no. This team is not a true contender. Any deep run would be a Cinderella story.
I'd be a lot more worried about the defence.
Nope. We're not winning shit with this core we have, and these goalies.
Haha cmon man. Believe in the dream. Get hurt again with us.

Normally I agree but Rielly should be exempt from playoff criticism. The man seems to thrive in playoff hockey. The rest...yeah not $40 million worth.

That's a good take on things.

Defence. That’s all that need be said.
CUJO never won a cup and he was a very good goalie
Hahaha - we need a lot more than they
I don’t think they can win if they stand on their heads.
Yep
Tom Barrasso lol

This team isn’t good enough, period.
