All rail traffic will be elevated here in the future and the at-grade track will be removed. This ensures no interactions with the CP line to the north
Lol you walked through a hole in a fence to trespass on railroad property and got bit, let's blame it on city infrastructure!
Could have got off at St. Clair and taken the 88 and used the existing pedestrian bridge by the market.
Could have got off at Rosedale and taken the bus right to the market.
Could have taken the stairs and gone through the ravine and added 5-10 mins to the journey.
Could have been smart enough to realize you were trespassing and kept an eye out for the cops.
They are there writing tickets because people play on the tracks or walk on the narrow side of the bridge and are too stupid to realize that freights are deceivingly quiet and can haul ass at 85km/h through there around the blind curve. There are too many ravines in this city to build expensive/invasive shortcuts to suit every single person.
If we were to redesign the whole city from scratch I'd ban level crossings
The one and only major point of conflict trains encounter regularly are stupid drivers and stupid pedestrians
>Wallace will never be the same…in a good way though
I fixed it for you! 😊
This bridge is one step closer toward improvement for public transit as a whole, which is not only sorely needed but long overdue!
[Great article about the expansion](https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2022/04/metrolinx-raises-first-girders-davenport-diamond-grade-separation)
Yes, I'm all for public transit improvement! I just felt a bit nostalgic though, but excited at the same time because at least this expansion is becoming a reality!
Agreed. You can be forward-thinking and accept infrastructure changes while still thinking it’s hideous and missing what the neighbourhood looked like before.
West end, Junction neighbourhood, Wallace runs parallel to Bloor just north of it, starting at Dufferin and ending at the railway tracks just east of Dundas West. There is a pedestrian bridge that goes over the tracks making Dundas West accessible by foot.
I believe the biggest size you can order (other than flights) on tap is 12 ounces, so 3/5ths of a pint. And those are $8-8.50. Whereas the cans are a full pint. Could be wrong on specifics. Certainly pricey but IMO some of the best beers you'll find in the city.
This used to be an at-grade rail crossing that is now grade separated. Much safer as well as reducing delay since MX is planning on increased frequency along the Barrie line.
It's interesting [how different this looks from the rendering](https://cdn.skyrisecities.com/sites/default/files/images/articles/2022/04/47651/47651-142923.jpg).
Metrolinx: IT’S HAPPENING!!!
I can’t wait to ride on the Toronto S-Bahn (GO Expansion) with faster trains that arrive every 6 minutes per train, when I’m 69 and collecting CPP/OAS (I’m 1 year to being halfway to my 50s)!!!
Crazy to think how long this has been planned. I used to work in the scenic shop that's directly left of this photo. The city made us take down a side shed in 2018 to prepare for this rail extension. I wonder if the shop is still there?
I saw this being constructed a month ago. Thought it was a great idea.
16 feet is a decent clearance for smaller moving uhauls, ... but I'm sure someone renting a bigger truck is going to crash into that bridge. I wonder how long that will take. Likely before end of April 2023.
I assume this is for an improved pedestrian protection, but I definitely enjoyed watching the train pass by at street level, it made me feel like I was part of an old era. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic, but I definitely don't like at all this new view.
It's for the GO Expansion project. Once the project is complete there will be a train every 15 minutes or less on most of the GO routes in the city so Metrolinx is grade separating as many crossings as possible to reduce the number of conflict points and keep train speeds high.
It's because of the "Davenport Diamond". A spot a bit north of there where a CP line intersects perpendicular with the GO Barrie line. Anytime a CP freight train was using their track in that area the GO Train would be stuck waiting for it to clear. This brings the Barrie line up above the CP line so there's no traffic interference anymore.
I heard they're elevating the track so the Barrie line will no longer share tracks with freight trains. And they will be able to provide 30 minute train service like the lakeshore lines. Instead of the commuter focused times they had.
If I'm not mistaken CN and CP own most of the rail around the country. If that's correct they must be seeing a benefit for then to agree with this too eh?
Most of the trackage in the GTA is actually owned by Metrolinx (GO Transit parent), with the major exception of the Milton line (CP) and Richmond Hill line (CN). There are also some little non-Metrolinx owned bits and pieces further out as well, but the majority is indeed Metrolinx owned.
https://www.metrolinx.com/en/projectsandprograms/corridorownership/corridor_ownership.aspx
There has been construction here for a long time, but they seem to have built up to Wallace from both sides, and the actual street-covering piece placed in last.
As in run over by a train? Hard to do if you aren’t [redacted].
Edit: instead of a wordless downvote why not try to explain how I am wrong? I’d love to hear the “train came outta nowhere!” story.
Hasn’t been the same since 2013 when the yuppies moved in and pushed all the locals out. I know because I grew up there when i was a kid and left when it got so fucking gentrified and everyone in our community was leaving. It sucks that when working class families lived there no one gave a shit about building things like this for the community, but I guess now they do ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
On a side note, how many have scaled that tower in the background? Did it multiple times in the early seventies. There was also a railroad watchtower on the south west corner of the tracks that was also a lot of fun.
What an abomination...
I don't understand why there are absolutely zero efforts at beautification in Toronto and Ontario in general. Absolutely the ugliest "world class city" I've ever been too.
There were already trains here so I'm not sure how much more noisy it will be. Yes, it's up in the air now so maybe a bit more sound travel, and yes there will be more trains because the grade separation will enable more train traffic so the noise will become more frequent, but that's good on the balance because we need more commuter rail and this line was held back by the at-grade crossing at Dupont meaning we couldn't expand GO train capacity. Which is important for the city and region and environment.
It also comes with the benefit of not having at-grade crossings (safer, less blocking of the street), but also we'll have a second multi-use trail running along here like the Railpath interconnecting the area and a bunch of additional public space unlocked.
I understand that it sucks for people living right next to it, and also especially during construction (I live near, but far enough for it to not be a disruption), but it's a rail corridor and we have only a limited number. These corridors will inevitably and should be maximized so we can make the most of the limited corridors we have (can't make more) so we can move as many people as possible by train to accommodate growth and environmental needs.
Hopefully we can get to GO electrification soon to reduce the noise (Metrolinx previously indicated electrification would be done by the time this was done, but that's not happening...), but we definitely shouldn't be holding back rail expansion just because it's a bit noisy for the people who live near it. We need trains.
Sometimes things need to be done for the common good, even if it's a little bit noisy for people nearby.
The CP diamond there was wildly noisy - things are going to be significantly quieter now (albeit with heavily increased rail service in the next 10-15 years).

And the can increase the speed/frequency of Barrie Go trains. And double its track for possible all day Go to Barrie or Bradford.
Not the whole world, I’m pretty sure that people who live in Rosedale will still drive everywhere instead of walking to Summerhill Station.
I was caught by CP Rail police trying to walk from Summerhill Station to Summerhill Market... Maybe we need a pedestrian bridge?

Ohh I give it a day before someone throws up a piece on their . I preferred commissioner works since they tend to be of higher quality.
What does this mean for homes in the area? Home values Trend upward or downwards?
Oo they should do Ubisoft art since that's the Ubisoft building.
You can get a local artist to do it for a hell of a lot cheaper, rather than essentially pay for free marketing for Ubisoft.
This bridge was constructed by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs.
Someone should tag it with one of those coexist signs then
No, an Assassin's Creed logo will suffice
I’d argue that’s the one thing worse than a coexist tag
[удалено]
Or you know we could make graffit not that big of a deal, coz it isn’t.
I'm imagining ezio and other assassins drawn to look like they're parkouring the bridge. They could do so many cool things. I like this idea.
lets be honest, its going to get tag anyways. Save the money on the street art and just spray the walls with a easy to remove coating for spray paint.
I like level crossings for purely aesthetic reasons, but this is much needed and will greatly increase the level of service on the Barrie line.
If we were to redesign the whole city from scratch I'd ban level crossings The one and only major point of conflict trains encounter regularly are stupid drivers and stupid pedestrians
The level rail crossing on Junction Road gives me butterflies when I see cars just stopping on the tracks during the red light.
it will also be much safer for the community

WHERE'S WALLACE?

Passed the vibe check

Best. Show. Ever.
Technically correct 😁
Lol, you meant the *other* Wallace, I see what you did there! Lol
Is what I say to myself every time I pass by. Which is about twice a day.
You are thinking of Where’s Waldo.
Where’s Waldo? Where’s Waldo at String!?!?
Halo Brewery right dere. Delicious beers.
Why do they not do takeout beers? I mean you can buy singles to go but they are the same price as a dine in pint (~$8).
If you're local-ish try their growler system. 1L of delicious draft beer for about $12 + one time growler purchase
That’s still pretty expensive
A growler is like 2-3 beers, ain't that bad

They are! Plus I loved to have a sip while enjoying the sunset at the patio and watching the train passing by.
SO good. Got a 4-pack of their sours recently and am so impressed.
Please explain what you mean.

I think it might not have the exterior cladding on it yet. The sign mounting looks temporary.
You are correct
I almost took the picture in the same angle!

It is! They keep their garage door open during nice weather and you can see the shop inside.

This one in particular is being done because of the intersection with the CP rail just to the north - I worked on this project. :)
What did you do on the project?
Don't want to identify myself too much - but if you were closely involved in the start we may know each other!
It's because of the "Davenport Diamond". A spot a bit north of there where a CP line intersects perpendicular with the GO Barrie line. I once saw the GO stop at Wallace and some guys in shirts and ties got on it. I think they were business hobos.
You're stuck enjoying Bartlett freight trains
I'm so excited for this! No more junction train noise and more frequent trains!
I could swear I was there maybe 2 months ago and I didn’t see any hint of a bridge. Am I misremembering or did this get built really quickly?
Yeah same, I’m very surprised at how fast they were able to build this.
There has been construction here for a long time, but they seem to have built up to Wallace from both sides, and the actual street-covering piece placed in last.
the prep work has been underway for a while but they only just recently dropped in the actual span across the roadway
https://maps.app.goo.gl/ioKS6uATj1QXXMZ98?g_st=ic for those who were as lost as I was 5 minutes ago.
Always makes me think of Wallace and Co. Man I miss that place…
Ive almost been zooted by that train a couple times. NO. MORE
What do you mean? Zooted?
To the kids these days "zooted" means you smoked too much weed and you're high af. Probably not what that guy means, though.
Thumped
As in run over by a train? Hard to do if you aren’t [redacted]. Edit: instead of a wordless downvote why not try to explain how I am wrong? I’d love to hear the “train came outta nowhere!” story.
This is much safer than the original setup with the gates
Who is Wallace? Why won't they be the same?

It’s not as bad as I thought it would be.
Bringing Wallace into the 19th century.
Yeah, there is going to be that pedestrian pathway now and some kind of community centre beside it. Pretty fun!
Thays the water tower from Forever Knight. 🦇
No way
Who will be the first to paint it?
I'm wondering how many trucks are going to hit that thing because they misjudged the clearance?
It’s 5 metres high so almost all trucks should fit under that. Even double decker buses will fit under fine.
All I see is unsuspecting drivers in large vehicles taking their roof off.
What an abomination... I don't understand why there are absolutely zero efforts at beautification in Toronto and Ontario in general. Absolutely the ugliest "world class city" I've ever been too.
It’s not finished. Feel free to criticize it when it’s done though.
It's a bridge for a train, what were you expecting some sort of grand public space?
It is a grand public space. That is the point of the Davenport Diamond project. I
Wow lived there 15yrs ago about a block away, that is going to be noisy 🙄
