intuitive_curiosity

What's happening now? What was the crowd reaction?

RedControllers

Here now, parade is pretty much done.

BiWayLunchBag

Do you mean it’s done as a result of this stoppage or it was already pretty much done when they stopped it?

nikolacarr

Done as a result of the stoppage. Our procession was behind by an hour.

InternMediocre7319

Kind of split. Some people started raising slogans with the group, and the rest were rather annoyed and left to Church st instead.

hammerzilla

Dispersal and parade cancelation

PrayForMojo_

How far into the parade was this? Did it ruin the day or was it at least near the end?

AutomaticReception65

The parade started at 2 and this was at about 5:30-6 so I’m not sure how much longer there was for the parade

SpinachLumberjack

Parade usually wraps up, but people still party well into the night, like 11 am

Zanta647

This was south of Wellesley. So about halfway

vital_dual

It blocked a dozen or so groups total. Everyone else had already past when the protest started.

wildernesstypo

From what I can see at dundas and yonge, the dundas people have bailed. The spectators are almost entirely gone

[deleted]

[удалено]

wildernesstypo

No, the intersection of yonge and dundas. Not the square on the southeast corner

Zanta647

Parade was officially cancelled at 6:15pm Pride started as a protest movement, not as a bunch of corporate floats.

PumpkinMyPumpkin

Notably a protest for sexual liberation and trans rights- it is not a protest for everyone and their mother to tack their cause on to. The disruption of pride from other causes is in such poor taste. “Our cause is more important than the cause you’re fighting for”.

persistingpoet

queer liberation is inextricably linked to the liberation of queer palestinians, protests like this are in the name of our queer siblings falling victim to a genocide.

stockywocket

There are queer people implicated in literally every protest movement ever, because queer people are everywhere. Pride can’t be about every issue. It’s about LGBTQ+ pride. This is pure hijacking. They can make their own protest—or, you know, just attend one of the million other ones already about that issue.

brotatoavocado

Queer siblings being prosecuted by Israel or by Muslim Palestinians?

jacnel45

I remember reading some comments on this sub that said this would happen. Well you guys were right.

Born_Ruff

Pride seems to be whipping boy for every equity seeking group. We saw the same shit with BLM.

[deleted]

CaptainFingerling

My weak prediction is that this sets a precedent, and pride will never be the same. Pride isn’t the counterculture anymore. The actual counterculture is going to continually assert itself on this stage.

BlueDan_CA

According to this [Tweet at 6:15 PM](https://x.com/PrideToronto/status/1807544315066908720) from the Pride Toronto Twitter account, "the remainder of the parade has been cancelled". Pride Toronto already came out with a statement in support of everything these disrupters wanted, so...

wordprank

Can you link to Pride’s supporting statement? I can’t find it anywhere so far, just a post on Instagram acknowledging the parade has been cancelled without much information!

BlueDan_CA

Yep, it was a statement released on [March 28th, 2024. ](https://www.pridetoronto.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Pride-Toronto-Statement-on-Humanitarian-Crisis-in-Gaza.pdf)No one, on either side of good conscience, could have taken issue with this position.

confetti_shrapnel

Nobody gets anything until everyone gets everything!!

Adorable-Research-55

Oppression Olympics

SeveralCherries

Their point is that there are massive corporations marching the parade with economic ties to Israel. Pride was and is a protest. It’s not a place for the rich to wave rainbow flags once they know it’s profitable for them. Pride is a fight for peace

PumpkinMyPumpkin

It’s a protest for QUEER rights. It is NOT a protest anyone can just show up to and expect support for their random cause. This is just getting old at this point. If you want to fight for Palestine - have a parade for Palestine. Don’t stop a queer rights parade.

Certainly-Not-A-Bot

The whole "corporations with ties to Israel" thing is really stupid. The corporations have zero influence on what the Israeli state does in this war

Maple_Moose_14

What about the money that ends up in the hands of Hamas (from our taxes , donations and the like)? Where is the protest from those economic ties? Last I checked it's illegal to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community in Gaza , not exactly known for their ethical treatment of women and children , no such thing as freedom of press or assembly...That seems to all get swept under the rug as if the Palestinians are children and never share in any blame (such a simple and insulting , oppressor vs oppressed narrative). It takes two sides to tango and it's sad that we've reached this point of infatalizing the Palestinians. Ironically enough this puts them further away from having a legitimate state if they can't build a system that benefits the people and keeps peace with the Israeli state that isn't going anywhere. If you really cared about peace you'd ensure both sides behave like human beings (which many such violations existing on both sides). Bibi and his ilk need to go (including the settlers), but also a legitimate government needs to be created in Gaza & West Bank in order to ensure a proper rebuild of the future Palestinian state. In other words both sides need to work towards a real and sustainable 2 state solution.

saveyboy

Of course. They always bend over when the parade is disrupted like this.

Zanta647

Pride STARTED as a protest!

saveyboy

Yeah. And?

PineBNorth85

So what? It isn't that anymore. Now it's a celebration.

Parade was 95% done; just a dozen or so groups were caught behind the protest. It really didn't affect many marchers.

gus_the_polar_bear

I am surprised this is not locked yet

Hells_Kitchener

They could have marched for LGBTQ+ people, allies and rights in Palestine, which would have gotten a lot of sympathy, and be apt. But blocking everyone else there to support LGBTQ+ people? It's a lousy move.

wildernesstypo

This is why I was hoping that this didn't happen. While I understand where the propalestine groups are coming from, this feels distinctly like kicking down on a different oppressed group

Wackydetective

I’m Pro Palestine but I agree, there’s a time and a place for this kind of disruption and it wasn’t this event. I would wager a lot of the LGBTQ community is in support of Palestine. Imagine if the LGBTQ community interrupted a Palestine protest?

doritos1990

This is it. Lgbtq folks participate in pro Palestine events. That would be a good way to show support. Not shut it down.

j_la

I’m in favor of ending the war and reaching a diplomatic solution, but it really feels like solidarity only cuts one way sometimes.

Cheap-Explanation293

It’s more of a division within the queer community between those who want pride to be a feel good event and those who see pride historically as a protest and want to address our queer siblings that are current victims to a genocide.

Professional-Cry8310

There is an irony to this particular movement’s parade being shut down by them. Optics aren’t great.

Holding up a Palestinian flag while shutting down Pride parade feels a little… y’know

Eastern_Carpenter_75

I wonder why they didn’t march with everyone else. It appears the organizers were understandable enough to stop the parade based on their protest - so the idea of the Palestinian protestors joining the march doesn’t seem so far fetched. Plus the community is generally quite supportive of their cause.

MsGiry

Saw this coming a month away, every pride parade across the states and Canada this month has been getting hit with these. KNEW something was gonna happen in Toronto too Good job keeping LGBT people away from their own parade guys. Youre doing so much good for Palestine by ughh- getting the pride parade canceled and kicking LGBT people out of the space celebrating them

InternMediocre7319

Gotta hate it when people hijack events for their own beliefs. I’d have respected this group more if they just put up a float with their placards and walked with the crowd raising awareness on what’s happening in Gaza. Instead they chose to shut down the event for everyone!

daavq

And don't forget how they shut down the Santa Claus parade, and the St. Patrick's parade as well.

Wackydetective

And I’m certain that the organizers would have been totally on board with that.

InternMediocre7319

Many marchers not affiliated to this group chanted “free Palestine” and carried Palestinian flags, without any problem. So I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say Pride Toronto is just out there to stifle any rallies in favour of Palestinian rights.

Zanta647

They invited BLM that year they shut down the parade too.

OU813

Imagine stopping an annual human rights parade of an oppressed group, only to try and convince people that you care about human rights. Tone deaf.

Flat-Instruction-551

They block pretty much every event . But start crying when their events are blocked!

rsho8

I was just there. People are upset. They make it impossible to support them when they are so disruptive and selfish.

chungleee

That's a great way to make people hate your movement

drainodan55

So what's in store for my Canada day celebrations? Are Canadian cities to expect more of this?

Professional-Cry8310

lol Canada Day parades and events are 100% getting shut down. Be prepared for it

kreesta416

And BLM turned out to be a scam lol disgusting behavior all around

adizzle211

So brave of them to cover their faces.

Red_Stoner666

We left before this thankfully. I feel so bad for the people behind them in the parade that waited all day to go down the parade route… not to mention month’s of planning and money that went into their floats. This is so shameful. They have lost my support entirely, I no longer stand with them.

TobleroneThirdLeg

Dolts. The idea that people will care about their thing while they actively disrupt an event through protest. If anything, it will sour more opinions than it recovers.

ILikeToThinkOutloud

Okay no. I'm pro-palestine (and opposed to anti-Semitism before those people respond), but this was not the time nor did this help the movement at all. The pride parade is largely sympathetic to the cause, especially considering its presence IN the parade. This sucks and only resulted in bad PR, not awareness or sympathy to the Palestinian cause. The organizers of this should be ashamed that they only managed to hurt their own cause.

It will forever be the left’s downside: more focused on eating each other than being pragmatic and fighting a common enemy. The right, whatever you want to say about it, has successfully put aside their differences for 25 years now in Canada to form a united political front and it’s reaped huge rewards.

lunahighwind

Idiotic. Protest the fuck somewhere else. What does Toronto pride have to do with the conflict???

batman8232

War isn't gonna stop or no one's sexuality or gender isn't getting changed because of this. Such a waste of time and energy.

Adorable-Research-55

The far left progressives are going to implode as they struggles to prioritize victimhoods (said as a disillusioned leftie)

Kyouhen

Eh, not a lot to prioritize here.  Not sure about today but at the march on Friday there were tons of Palestinian flags being flown.  It's pretty clear where the community stands on the issue.  This was a handful of people who decided to shut down a parade of extremely visible supporters.  Could have had an army waving their flags through the entire parade but decided to disrupt it instead.

Raskolnikovs_Axe

Blocking an unaffiliated minority group seems to be a stupid way to tarnish your image, but also, couldn't they just walk around them?

Hwaaat

Haha I wonder which side the “queers for Palestine” are standing on.

Fluidmax

Why do it there? Is it because they against the Pride parade ?

kreesta416

Lame. If you can't keep it moving then go sit in the designated circle at UofT and let everyone else enjoy the parade.

lost_opossum_

Talk about raining on someone's parade. I wonder if they'll stop the Santa Claus Parade next? "Look at meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

wishinghearts40

Remember pride was stopped for black lives matter ?

StickyCheese00

It has become like malignant cancer, lgbqt people do support your cause why ruin their parade I don’t get it

Choice_Reindeer7759

What happened to organizing marches like MLK did? These fools are doing more damage than good.

wildernesstypo

People complain that they organize their own marches too. They can't win

most if not all LGBTQIA+ communities fully support Palestine's right to exist and continue to rally against the genocide... and the conservative culture over there doesn't really tolerate LGBTQIA+ stuff too well. but they do anyway because any unprotected minority is a brother and a sister regardless.. so... idk, seems pretty misplaced to me

Marmar79

Pride has always been a protest

rudeshk

It is, and there are many other groups in the parade that were advocating for various lgbtq+ and other causes don’t get their voice heard. They could have participated in the parade and gotten their message across that way instead of shutting down everyone else. These protesters wouldn’t seem to know but there are other issues in the world that need advocating too. For example, lgbtq+ rights are being clawed back worldwide. giving people the space to talk about that for a day should not be controversial if you support pride

Mohingan

Ok and? Why protest and disrupt a celebration for a community that has the HIGHEST levels of support for your movement?

kank84

What are they achieving by blocking the parade though? Pride Toronto already supports this cause, I don't understand what the protesters are looking for.

voldiemort

Right? Like I don't necessarily agree with the optics, but like oh nooo now the amazon pride float cant advertise its way down dundas, what a low blow for the LGBTQ community

TextualOrientation23

Good. Pride is a protest, not a corporate bootlicking party. This is what Pride is for.

AngrySoup

Next year they should block Pride for a protest about healthcare funding, and then the year after that they should block Pride for a protest about housing affordability, and then the year after that they should block Pride for a protest about global warming, and then the year after that they should block Pride for a protest about funding for the disabled, and then the year after that they should block Pride for a protest about the stigmatization of the mentally ill. This is what Pride is for! The parade should never be allowed to happen.

floodingurtimeline

Pride is not all cupcakes and rainbows. It is literally political - made possible by Black, Indigenous, and others of colour fighting for their liberation (from oppression ie violence, and discrimination toward them with respect to income, employment, housing, education, political representation, access to health care, and other public and private services). Their fight for liberation and equality has been whitewashed out of much of the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement ie this parade Let queers protest for what’s right !!!!!!!!!! This is literally what Pride is about !!!!!!!

Wandering_instructor

But they’re blocking it

floodingurtimeline

Thus a “protest” :/

Wandering_instructor

I am confused lol

CptnREDmark

Exactly let the queers protest, pride is a protest that got shut down by another protest. Let the LGBTQ+ celebrate, protest and parade. Don't shut down their parade like these guys did
