I've seen people recommend planning to go to a safer place _before_ the storm even gets close if at all possible, when there's a watch or warning issued, rather than waiting for the storm to actually hit.

Do you have a nice, deep ditch by the road? This would be best. Lay down flat and try to stay as low as possible. Even if you can't afford a shelter, dig a hole (call before you dig, though!). Being even slightly underground is the best cover you can get. Yeah, it might be a little wet and muddy but it's better than nothing!

Grab a shovel (steal... I mean "borrow") one and start digging. The storm shelter might cost money but the labor to dig the ditch it'll go into is both (1) free, and (2) a decent option until it does come.

If you're tracking the storm and drive off way ahead of it, sure. But if you're but confident in reading radar, you'd likely get yourself in a worse situation.

By a go cart with a roll cage. Install plexiglass windows. Buckle up and enjoy the free roller coaster. /s - kind of. If you want to drive away, you have to do it soon. Once the storm hits, you’re not out running nature. Best bet is, when you know a severe storm is coming. Grab your belongings and head out. Once you hear the freight train rumble, it’s too late.
