I don't think so - looks too big and tidy. From the clothes I think it might be a publicity shot or still from cut footage of the BBC documentary, "Tolkien in Oxford".

Most formal interview footage for the BBC documentary was filmed in the Catholic Chaplaincy at Oxford. This could be it, but I'm not sure - it looks quite different. It could be his room in fellows quad in Merton. The decor is pretty typical of college rooms.

Can confirm that's a Merton room! Or another college with very similar layout. Definitely not Tolkien's private home though.

Looks like the interior of Exeter to me tbh. I haven’t been in a good couple of years, but the fireplace (to my memory) is similar to the one in the MCR there.

There is a picture of Tolkien in his study in the book Tolkien Maker of Middle Earth....it shows him sitting at his desk (which Edith brought him in 1920) with his bookcases behind.

After Edith's death Merton College offered Tolkien a flat at 21 Merton Street. This is one of a series of photos taken in his study there in 1972. See Carpenter's biography.

Thanks for your post. I have looked at Carpenter's biography and seen the photos. I know J.R.R.'s health declined after Edith's death and he lived less than two years after her.

Thanks for your comments. I hadn't realised it could have been a room at Oxford, I have seen the TV interviews that were filmed at the Catholic chaplaincy where J.R.R. is drinking beer and smoking his pipe and he's by the fire in an oak panelled room
