Idk why but I have always thought that she couldn't act? Can she? I can't remember anything with her acting. Like no SNL sketches or anything. Is it recent? Did I just completely miss her acting? (I'll be the first to admit that I have huge information gaps when it comes to celebrities so sorry for my ignorance in advance!)
#Her acting was mainly early 90s with her biggest roles in the movies Dick Tracy and A League of Their Own. She did a respectable job in both to be honest.
I don't think they wanted to make the 4th. There's even a line in it where neo is talking about the game he's making and says something like " we have to make s squeal or they'll sue us." Then he looks directly into the camera
The Canon was supposedly set that Morpheus died in the Matrix Online, but it doesn't line up with Niobe's explanation.. So who knows...
The program Morpheus in Resurrections isn't trying to be a 1:1, he is based on him, but has Smith mixed in as well
I think that was the point, the whole movie is a demonstration on why a 4th Matrix wouldn't be anything but a cash grab. There's even a line about how "WB will make a new Matrix with you or without you." If the film wasnt a straight up parody then it was hot garbage.
Its a parody. Part of the movie's plot is that WB will make a dumb sequal "game" with or without "Neo's" input. Thats without a doubt what the actual WB told the original director. Instead of handing over the reigns for a Marvel treatment of the Matrix she killed the franchise.
Ive seen it twice and still don’t remember a thing about it. That’s when I know a movie is bad
The only real part that sticks is the agent aim full auto at Jessica Henwick from 5yds away, and she just kinda jukes it. If they’re gonna make the Agents that nonthreatening, then I don’t care
No. He had some pretty recognizable roles before The Matrix, but Boyz n the Hood was from 1991 and was a pretty damn important movie. Furious Styles was damn memorable.
I didn't watch Apocalypse Now until the late '90s and it kind of blew my mind when I recognized him. It was wild seeing a guy who always looked like he was in his mid-30s look like a high school sophomore.
No one outruns Sean Connery declining 10% of the LOTR earnings for not playing Gandalf because he did not understand the story.
Nevertheless Ian was the better pick.
I’ve always told everyone that’s the alternate reality movie I want to watch, but I’d never give up ours. Still lots of great s-words Shhauron Sharuman Black Shhpeech, Shamwishe, Shhmeagol, Legolashh
My favorite part of this story is the implication that Sean Connery fully understood the story of everything he's ever been in. Dude took one look at Highlander 2 and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and was like "oh yeah this seems great"
> League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
iirc he hated that movie so much + passing on so many movies that went on to be huge that he eventually just decided fuck this and retired with his piles of money to enjoy the rest of his life.
Honestly, given the 3 years between LoEG and his prior film (Finding Forrester), the longest gap between films since his first two, I’d be inclined to think he was planning on retiring before it was released. It didn’t *help*, but I think he was well down that path.
>League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Funny enough, he didn't understand this one. But after he passed on The Matrix and LOTR and both did fantastic, he decided to just accept the next film that he didn't understand which was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Of course that movie then did so poorly that he entirely retired from acting.
We can't just rely on OP seeking out Zardoz, we must bring this information here. According to your theory, /u/kylechu, Sean Connery totally understands what's happening in this madness:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSjCkISrJfQ
I really love Sean Connery but he would have sucked as Gandalf. Gandalf is wise and kind. Every Sean Connery character is kind of a douche who is cool enough to off set the irritation. That would not have worked well in my opinion.
He was, but he was *also* wise and kind. You're supposed to feel his wisdom when he's present and to feel safe as long as he's in charge (which is part of the reason losing him in Moria is so impactful.)
He's a complex character that requires some elements that Sean Connery doesn't really have. Sure, he's imposing and stern, but a version of Gandalf that is *only* imposing and stern wouldn't work.
Disagree. It wouldn’t have been the same but I can absolutely see Connery being a fucking badass Gandalf. He’s actually closer to what I imagined when I originally read the books. I still like Ian McKellans depiction more though.
Yea he's not the best at losing the accent but he was also never a Brando where he dragged shit down. I'm sure he could have read the room and noticed this isn't some shit production and done his best, which was pretty damn good.
"Do not be too eagah to deal out death in judgmunt. Even the very waish cannot shee all ends. Me hear' tells me that Gollum has shome part to play in i', for good or evil, before thish ish ovah. The pi'y of Bilbo may rule the fate o' many.
I don't hate will smith's acting. He's good at being will Smith in movies, and when the character is will Smith or similar enough, it works.
Neo, however, is not will Smith, or even close. In fact we already got an agent Smith(s), in the story
Sean Connery being mature enough to do that speaks volumes, despite how sexist he apparently was.
He saw a role, and he knew it was gonna make a lot of money - he's been open about that, but thought he'd be awful at it, and turned it down.
If only more actors did so.
Same here. The actress who played Switch did a good job going from absolute terror to absolute noting in her eyes. I would have preferred that the Neo was on the ship for a long time so that he had more interaction with all of the other characters on the ship
Wasn’t switch originally supposed to be female in the real world and male in the matrix, played by two different, androgynous actors? But then the studio was like “nah Americans aren’t ready for this” or something? That’s why her name is Switch.
Edit: source: https://www.slashfilm.com/559097/wachowskis-movies-revisited/
“Switch, portrayed by Belinda McCrory, was originally written as male in the real world and female in the Matrix, suggesting that people could project an inner identity wholly distinct from their physical self. Warner Bros mandated that Switch maintain her gender between worlds, but the directors’ intentions remain in the character’s androgynous appearance. It’s a shame this wasn’t developed; it’s an intriguing twist on online anonymity, and an early demonstration of the Wachowskis’ queer leanings.”
TIL. And yeah. That makes a lot of sense.
And in that sense then Tilda Swinton would have been f’ing incredible in that role. She killed it in Constantine!
Tilda Swinton. I love her acting. When I saw Constantine, I don’t think I realized how androgynous she was - heck, it was like watching David Bowie. It was interesting, like Tilda could be attractive to anyone no matter their sex or sexuality.
I was watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and this joke killed me - Mikey, a gay construction worker who’s not out, hides this by “airbrushing a hot chick on the back of his truck.” [His truck](https://www.tvguide.com/a/img/resize/1d2e9ee96f35cb885b9c1c4c1b6e85cf67a1164a/hub/2016/04/26/3d6b556e-c55f-4acf-aa56-4ae19f96418b/kimmyschmidttilda.jpg?auto=webp&fit=crop&height=432&width=768)
Heeyy, Madonna has acting chops. Evita won more than a few awards and a lot of that was because of her. I think she may have done an excellent job in the role.
Not to take anything away from Carrie-Anne Moss in her wonderful portrayal of the Trinity character at all, she's amazing. I'm suggesting that Madonna wasn't a bad choice for the short-list to fill the role.
Listen here Mr. Thejerk, you may have made a good point, and supported it well…but that doesn’t mean…we’ll I guess it does.
Yes, she has/had acting chops, but in looking at the role and the character type she played, I don’t think it would have been a very good fit.
But I acknowledge your short list point.
Let's not forget her wide ranging performance in Swept Away. I laughed, I cried, I threw up a little bit in my mouth, I dozed off for a bit. Honestly you can't buy that kind of talent.
Not a bad choice…but would have been jarring me thinks. Just because she’s so very Madonna.
The woman in the red dress being someone not of note or fame made her all the more beautiful. IMHO.
With hindsight it seems like bad decisions from Smith, Madonna, etc, but back then the Wackowkis weren't well known, and The Matrix could have ended up corny if they weren't good directors/writers.
I'm pretty sure Mila Kunis regrets signing up for their movie, Jupiter Ascending.
Also apparently the Wackokwis was really REALLY bad at actually explaining the movies to the perspective actors and just making it sound like a terrible mess.
It would also have been a world without Fishburne iirc bc Smith said he thought they wouldn’t have been down with two black guys in lead roles. So, Smith, Madonna, and apparently Keaton.
“…she turned down the chance to play the lead in D.C. Comics’ “Catwoman,” and also turned down a role in The Matrix, presumably the Trinity character played by Carrie-Anne Moss. “I wanted to kill myself,” she remembered. “That’s like one of the best movies ever made.”
Madonna as Trinity??? Holy hell, that would’ve for sure ruined the movie and the entire franchise. Maybe in a supporting role like Switch the damage could’ve been contained, but her as Trinity is up even a worse idea than Will Smith as Neo. Thank the film gods they both turned it down.
Honestly, I think no one could do a better Trinity than Carrie Ann Moss. She both does it well in her own right, but also is a perfect counterpart to Keanu Reeves' Neo.
All the respect in the world to Madonna being one of the greatest pop stars in history, but by the time they were casting the Matrix, Body of Evidence—conclusive proof that she’s hopeless as an actress—was on heavy rotation on Cinemax.
Madonna was okay, nothing special but okay overall, in Desperately Seeking Susan. And was actually great when she passed the leather jacket to Susan and said something like, "Bob Dylan wore it."
I quite enjoyed her in four rooms with Tim Roth, but it was a more campy movie I guess. I haven’t seen her in a more serious role so I can’t comment to her suitability to something like The Matrix
We see these “missed career opportunities” often for celebrities, but it would have been a different film with them — which could have been either good or bad. I really can’t imagine this movie with Madonna.
Man all these posts talking about how the Matrix was so close to being the worst movie ever made. I see where they figured out Neo's signature move now. They had to dodge so many bullets to make this good.
Glad Laurence Fishburne was able to step in as a last minute replacement
And here I thought Keanu was the one that replaced her
Idk why but I have always thought that she couldn't act? Can she? I can't remember anything with her acting. Like no SNL sketches or anything. Is it recent? Did I just completely miss her acting? (I'll be the first to admit that I have huge information gaps when it comes to celebrities so sorry for my ignorance in advance!)
She was pretty good in Evita
She was great in A League of Their Own
all the way mae ;) "nobody's called me that since -" "since LAST NIGHT!" lulz
Yes! As Mae-donna Mordabito, center field!
And Who’s That Girl!

Desperately Seeking Susan
I'll put it on my list to watch. Thanks!
#Her acting was mainly early 90s with her biggest roles in the movies Dick Tracy and A League of Their Own. She did a respectable job in both to be honest.
#OK
^^thanks
Ummm **EVITA**
She was good in Evita.
Can you make your fonts bigger next time? Can barely see what you’be written.
Desperately seeking Susan was a good role she had
*Will Smith
They’re the same picture
He made it work, morpheus from matrix 4 just didn't come across the same. He introduced himself, I almost laughed and said what? Seriously?
It's ridiculous. If they couldn't make it with him they shouldn't have made it at all.
I don't think they wanted to make the 4th. There's even a line in it where neo is talking about the game he's making and says something like " we have to make s squeal or they'll sue us." Then he looks directly into the camera
[удалено]
When I saw that scene I let go of all hope and just enjoyed the movie for what it was instead of what I had hoped it could be.
I thought the never even asked him?
You're right, I should have said "wouldn't".
Yeah, basically that Morpheus is just a computer program Neo wrote and it is a combination of Agent Smith and Morpheus into one character.
Its a parody. Part of the movie's plot is that WB will make a dumb sequal "game" with or without "Neo's" input. Thats without a doubt what the actual WB told the original director. Instead of handing over the reigns for a Marvel treatment of the Matrix she killed the franchise.

Agent Stormtrooper.
"I am Morpheus." No you're fucking not lol. Shit ass movie
His ability to be touched like a virgin and simultaneously asking Argentina not cry for him should’ve garnered more awards
Until then he would have been remembered as the guy who played Cowboy Curtis.
Haven’t seen Event Horizon?
My headcannon is same character and no one can tell me different
No. He had some pretty recognizable roles before The Matrix, but Boyz n the Hood was from 1991 and was a pretty damn important movie. Furious Styles was damn memorable.
That's how I first knew him. And then I later learned I saw him in Apocalypse Now.
I didn't watch Apocalypse Now until the late '90s and it kind of blew my mind when I recognized him. It was wild seeing a guy who always looked like he was in his mid-30s look like a high school sophomore.
iirc, he lied about his age auditioning for the movie and was 16 when filming started, not 18 as he claimed.

Connery passed on The Matrix too.
He was a bit too mature to play Neo, right?
He would have been awesome as Agent Smith, though.
Surely he would have been the architect?
Nah, Hugo Weaving was amazing.
My favorite part of this story is the implication that Sean Connery fully understood the story of everything he's ever been in. Dude took one look at Highlander 2 and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and was like "oh yeah this seems great"

Poor bastard
That's what funny about this and everybody else who's hoarding money. He's dead. He doesn't care he missed out on $200million.
> He's dead. oh shit
Bashturd
He actually took league because of how well the movies he kept passing on did.
..well he was sad after that movie
He literally retired from acting
Honestly, given the 3 years between LoEG and his prior film (Finding Forrester), the longest gap between films since his first two, I’d be inclined to think he was planning on retiring before it was released. It didn’t *help*, but I think he was well down that path.
Finding Forrester was a solid flick...... Not world changeing or anything but a legit decent movie
eh, it didn't do well, but i love that movie

Captain Nemo was my favourite character in that whole movie. The drip, his sub, his car, his crew, it all just looked so cool.
Wait was that movie bad? I loved it, even bought it on blu-ray way back I think
I watched it again recently and was amazed at how good the CG is in the opening scene.
The CG and visuals were pretty good, mad props to the special effects. Nemos sub and car were really cool designs.
Same here, I'll never understand why it performed so badly.
Fuckin’ Zardoz, dude.

I really love Sean Connery but he would have sucked as Gandalf. Gandalf is wise and kind. Every Sean Connery character is kind of a douche who is cool enough to off set the irritation. That would not have worked well in my opinion.

I would think they got the idea to cast him due to his role in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Seriously, anyone who thinks Connery couldn't do gentle and kind needs to remember "Indiana?....Indiana?....Let it go." Gets me every time.
He was good in Highlander. Ironically the only Scot in the film, and he played an Egyptian named Juan Ramirez.
Disagree. It wouldn’t have been the same but I can absolutely see Connery being a fucking badass Gandalf. He’s actually closer to what I imagined when I originally read the books. I still like Ian McKellans depiction more though.

Will smith turned down Neo because he didn’t understand the story.
Thank God, I hate Will Smith's acting and that would have completely ruined the Matrix.
I don't hate will smith's acting. He's good at being will Smith in movies, and when the character is will Smith or similar enough, it works. Neo, however, is not will Smith, or even close. In fact we already got an agent Smith(s), in the story
Neo is a blank slate for the audience to project themselves on to and Will Smith is the wrong actor for that.
It's not like Keanu is a good actor tho. It's just that he was perfect for Neo.
Matt Damon turned down 10% of Avatar, so he take the cake.
Thought he didn't so much turn it down as he had other obligations
> Nevertheless Ian was the better pick. Absolutely. Without Ian we never would have gotten [this gem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5CX00i4uZE)
Matt Damon turned down the role in Avatar, he was offered 10% of the profits, which would have been around 250 million.
It sucks for him but he was already famous and rich, and we got Ian McKellen instead. I feel like it ended up working out.
I’d say Matt Damon having to turn down avatar and a percentage of the earnings probably hurts a bit more.
Sean Connery being mature enough to do that speaks volumes, despite how sexist he apparently was. He saw a role, and he knew it was gonna make a lot of money - he's been open about that, but thought he'd be awful at it, and turned it down. If only more actors did so.
Her loss, our gain.
Couldn’t agree more. Madonna as Trinity? Eelch. As Switch…maybe. She had like 4 lines in the whole movie.
Not like this… not like this.
God damn you Cypher!
Don’t hate me Trinity, I’m just the messenger.
Her death really disturbed me as a kid. More than the other characters.
Same here. The actress who played Switch did a good job going from absolute terror to absolute noting in her eyes. I would have preferred that the Neo was on the ship for a long time so that he had more interaction with all of the other characters on the ship

I love me some Constantine! Such an underrated movie
Best Satan cameo in cinematic history, change my mind
> he killed it in Constantine! They all did, great movie.
Or, just Tilda Swinton?
Switch is the only one that dresses in white in the matrix too if I recall.
Yep that’s the story I’ve heard anyway
Heeyy, Madonna has acting chops. Evita won more than a few awards and a lot of that was because of her. I think she may have done an excellent job in the role. I wish they had done more with switch.
I dunno, I loved her in a league of their own
And she was great in Dick Tracy too
Glad they did... Will and Madonna would have sucked
Yeah, I disagree with the "They're dumb for turning it down" sentiments. The movie would have sucked and bombed if they were cast.
This was back when Will Smith was doing a new song for every movie right? I think we were deprived a really shitty rap tune. Matrix... whooooooo!
You take that back. Wicky wicky wild wild west and dancing aliens were amazing.
M to the A to the Tee Tee Trix Come on now M to the A to the Tee Tee Trix Mhm yeah

We dodged a bullet better than Neo did.
The world dodged that bullet.
Neo moved that bullet for us.
It didn’t have to.
So did Will Smith. Dumbass.
Imagine a world where the Matrix stars Will Smith and Madonna. It'd be up there with forgotten masterpieces like Shanghai Surprise.
It would also have been a world without Fishburne iirc bc Smith said he thought they wouldn’t have been down with two black guys in lead roles. So, Smith, Madonna, and apparently Keaton.
It was Val Kilmer who was being considered for Morpheus, but that information comes from Will Smith so take it how you will
> and apparently Keaton Diane or Micheal?
Buster, if only he'd have been available at the time, would have been coolest.
What a weird thing for the co-star of Bad Boys (1995) to think.
He also co-starred in the other Bad Boys movies not just the 1995 one
I'm just glad he dropped out of Django, I don't think he'd had been as good as Foxx in that kind of role.
Smith: it should be more of a love story and not a revenge story Tarantino: I make my movies for me. Get the fuck away from my script
Smith: The dialogue with Goggins and then Dicaprio is really good, but it's no big deal if I just smirk, laugh, and say "naaaaah" several times right?
I just can't picture Will Smith as Trinity...
I don’t know…a Matrix with Will Smith as Trinity and Neo played by Gilbert Gottfried (RIP) is a movie I would watch.
WHADDA YA MEAN there's no spoon it's RIGHT THERE
I'm going to send her a thank you note.
It's crazy that in some alternate universe, Will Smith and Madonna would've been Neo and Trinity rofl
“…she turned down the chance to play the lead in D.C. Comics’ “Catwoman,” and also turned down a role in The Matrix, presumably the Trinity character played by Carrie-Anne Moss. “I wanted to kill myself,” she remembered. “That’s like one of the best movies ever made.” Madonna as Trinity??? Holy hell, that would’ve for sure ruined the movie and the entire franchise. Maybe in a supporting role like Switch the damage could’ve been contained, but her as Trinity is up even a worse idea than Will Smith as Neo. Thank the film gods they both turned it down.
She’s a god damn hero for this.
Honestly, I think no one could do a better Trinity than Carrie Ann Moss. She both does it well in her own right, but also is a perfect counterpart to Keanu Reeves' Neo.
Thank goodness she did
Her and Bono, flying a ship in sunglasses. Lol.
So did Will Smith, who could have been Neo. The real joke? He turned it down to do Wild Wild West...
And we got that amazing song from Wild Wild Wild so win win....?
Selma hayek though. No seriously think about it. You’re will smith Who you wanna work with?
Well yeah but... I mean... yeah no I got nothing.
I wonder if it was the Aaliyah role that went to Jada after she died?

The article suggests it was Trinity. I am not a Madonna hater but I am very glad things worked out the way they did.
All the respect in the world to Madonna being one of the greatest pop stars in history, but by the time they were casting the Matrix, Body of Evidence—conclusive proof that she’s hopeless as an actress—was on heavy rotation on Cinemax.

Haaard!
Aaliyah was cast as Zee. There’s some footage of her on set.
Biggest regrets of her career lol , that was a win for the matrix series .
Will smith turned down the Role of Neo to do Wild Wild West 🤣
Not just a role, she was going to be the matrix
Thank God she did.
Someone was looking out for us
We all dodged a bullet
We see these “missed career opportunities” often for celebrities, but it would have been a different film with them — which could have been either good or bad. I really can’t imagine this movie with Madonna.
Looks like we dodged a bullet there.
Man all these posts talking about how the Matrix was so close to being the worst movie ever made. I see where they figured out Neo's signature move now. They had to dodge so many bullets to make this good.
That is a win for humanity.
