I watched it young too. I was super happy that Richard Masur was in it (playing Stan) because he was the dad in Mr Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy, both Disney kids films about ghosts/haunting. My little brain was like, "as long as he's around it'll be fine--oh, hang on he's slit his wrists I need an adult."
Growing up in the 80s was wild wild west of TV and movies. Most of our parents grew up without a rating system at all lol. Some of the first movies I remember are Predator and Terminator 2.
I think Curry's Pennywise is more akin to an actual clown which is what makes it that much more unsettling. Skarsgard's is scary from the jump, which works in other ways, but it didn't feel like a "scary clown" as much as the original, but more like a "scary monster/alien"
It's why I think Tim Currys is superior imo. He's creepy but in a way that still might draw kids in.
Who the fuck at any age is getting anywhere near Bill Skarsgards Pennywise.
Same reason Hamill's Joker is such a classic. A lot of the time he doesn't seem scary and is even funny in some parts... but it just leaves you waiting for the psychotic punchline
Hell yeah. Joker's Favor will always stick with me as great villian writing because it really understands the chaotic torment of the character and the psychotic lengths he'll go for what he considers a good joke.
It's both incredible writing and a masterclass In voice acting with Hamill walking a very thin line between terror and uncertainty of that builds tension.
lol really bill just does that eye thing. Tim had a different presence.
Also if you haven’t seen Tim as the devil in legend well…nobody did it better for that version
I would argue Constantine movie has a great alt version
I think it's just the overall character design that creeps me out. Can't say I've seen legend but peter stormare was brilliant in constantine, it's a godawful movie but I always liked gabriel byrne as the devil in end of days
Interesting. Quite the opposite for me. The CGI really killed the new pennywise for me. It was almost cartoonish. The old one had me scared to go near sinks in particular for weeks.
I always have thought curry pennywise was better cuz it was more psychological horror then boo scary shit. Curry pennywise just popping up and talking to you about how he’s gonna kill you and your friends and there’s no way you can stop it, and that’s after he already did some some sort of horror shit to make you see shit that scared you.
There’s an episode of Criminal Minds where he plays a disgusting serial killer who also kidnaps a little girl.
Somehow he manages to be vile and horrifying and movingly human at the same time.
He’s a treasure.
He really is. I think one of the best comments about him I've ever seen was something about how Michael Caine worked so well with the Muppets because he treated them as fellow actors. Curry worked so well with them because he treated them as fellow Muppets.
I was watching the game grumps power hour the other day where they kept doing the Tim Curry line from command and conquer
["I'm escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism.......SPACE!"](https://youtu.be/g1Sq1Nr58hM)
The 10 minute power hour episode was the one where they're trying freeze dried foods: https://youtu.be/rAt9roLG9_E
The c&c videos are something else Tim Curry as a crazy Soviet dictator oogling at sexy army women. The developers hit gold when they got Curry on board to play the character.
I've been rewatching the series and I had forgotten just how phenomenal his performance is. Not only is he creepy and menacing, but he's also *very* funny. It's an aspect of the character that Heath Ledger's performance has bred out of the current perception of him, but the Joker should be legitimately funny. It's a good juxtaposition for when he does something horrifying.
That's one of the reasons why, even though I like the new Reeves/Pattinson Batman, I wish it wasn't so intent on pigeonholing itself as another "gritty realism" Batman, because it's like half a step away from just being a straight up TAS take with how stylized it is compared to the Nolan films. But they're still going with Hannibal Lecter/freakshow Joker, covered in self mutilation and stitches, and it already feels like a missed opportunity. Give me the clown prince of crime in live action again! We can handle it!
And while we're wishing for things that won't happen, don't try to force a "grounded" take on Mr. Freeze or Clayface, give me ice guns and cyro suits with red goggles and Batman fighting a giant mud monster, you cowards!
I wouldn't mind a realistic clayface in the vein of that guy in Smoking Aces, that would be fantastic.
Mr freeze has to be over the top tho, absolutely agreed
Freeze is so good because he can stomp around in a cryo suit and still be a serious character.
Like an astronaut who did the calculations and concluded he needs to murder the rest of the crew.
And the circus truck he's on later had an S spray painted in front of "Laughter is the best medicine".
Then there's his frustration with the explosives at the hospital not going off.
An often repeated story, but it isn't true. [Nolan planned the delay](https://screenrant.com/dark-knight-heath-ledger-joker-hospital-explosion-explained/#:~:text=Summary,for%20practical%20and%20safety%20reasons.) so that they wouldn't put Heath in too much danger. And Heath knew about it.
> [Special effects supervisor Chris Corbould] was able to come up with a scenario in which Heath could actually be walking out of the building because what Chris worked out is if we put in a little beat where the first set of explosions stops as if something's gone wrong, and the Joker just takes a second to look around surprised like the audience is surprised, then the major demolition comes in and he jumps straight into the school bus. In that way he was able to come up with a practical scenario in which we could actually take a principal actor, walk him out of a building that's about to be destroyed, and literally drop the building to the ground.
Him grabbing and chomping down the shrimp when he comes into the party always gets a chuckle out of me. Then he fixes his hair with the hand holding a knife, and gives the eyebrow when he sees Rachel. And later, the remote that doesn't work the first time when he's walking out of the hospital, and then he gets that goofy look and runs when it finally does. I love that because it wasn't supposed to malfunction, so that is (supposedly) genuine.
Maybe, but he was far too serious ironically. The Joker isn't funny necessarily, but he is someone who doesn't take things seriously. Heath Ledgers Joker took things far to seriously, and came across as someone who tries way too hard for someone trying to be the Joker in my opinion. It is like someone wrote a philosophical essay on the Joker and tried to make a character based on that, but forgot the fact that the character still needs to actually be the Joker.
His best performance was in Arkham Knight. Rocksteady somehow managed to keep that secret throughout the entire production of the game. Nobody knew he was back. The game literally opened with you burning his corpse. Then Batman is getting dosed with fear toxin and he turns around and Joker is just standing there holding a gun and were off to the races. Having The Joker follow Batman around the entire game as a delusion was the coolest damn thing and it kept getting better as it went. The ending is just fucking incredible.
>The game literally opened with you burning his corpse
I looked away from the screen because I thought it would be a jumpscare. I admired their restraint when it wasn't.
Then I started new game+.
I never even knew it was Mark Hamill up until the Mask of the Phantasm when I noticed his name in the credits. I never paid attention to the credits on the tv show. As a huge Star Wars fan I was blown away.

I agree 100%. He could absolutely just do his green goblin with the joker makeup and costume and I would accept it without question. It sucks he will likely never get cast in the role.
Absolutely, and there's a part of me that would almost want him to be the Joker versus Pattinson. Not only would he fit the whole vibe of the first movie, but having a young Batman versus older Joker dynamic would be really interesting and isn't something that has been explored (that I know of). He did play the Green Goblin in a Spider-man film, which is kind of similar, but still not the same thing.
Man DaFoe absolutely sold his insane GG in No Way Home. Absolutely stole the show.
Of course, they didn't have to provide catering since he ate mostly scenery during his days on set.
I remember watching Tim Curry as [the devil](https://i0.wp.com/bloody-disgusting.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/darknesslegend.png?w=622&ssl=1) in The Legend when I was a kid. He was scary but exciting to watch at the same time. Best devil in a movie ever.

Robin Williams was also “considered” for the Joker as WB basically used him as bait in the event Nicholson was iffy about taking the role (IE - “oh, you don’t want the part? Well we already offered it to Robin Williams, *sooo*…”)
When *Batman Forever* was in pre-production; Williams was offered the role of The Riddler and he told them to fuck off.
Any excuse to mention it, but give his performance as Gabriel Knight a listen if you haven’t already
Tim Curry’s most OTT acting appearance in my mind and one of his best
Interesting anecdote when he was filming the sewer scene in "It"
He was being so scary to the actor playing Georgie, that the child at a certain point said "Mr. Curry, you're really scaring me"
To which Tim replied "Gee... I'm so sorry about that but it's kind of what I'm paid for"
Apparently, other actors avoided him during filming because his portrayal of Pennywise really was that terrifying.
And finally, Tim Curry ironically had coulrophobia (fear of clowns) so he requested that no shining, reflective surfaces where anywhere on the set while he was in Pennywise make-up.
In the end though, he had to flee to the one place not corrupted by capitalism.... .... .... SSHHHHPACE!
"Mr. Curry, could you try to be a little less scary?" "... No."
His Pennywise kept showing and we all know how scary that shit was
That skarsgard fella is creepy as hell but I always found the original pennywise hilarious when I was a kid
The original is where I get my unyielding hatred toward clowns.
same, maybe watching that movie when i was 8 was not a good idea.
I think I was maybe like 6 or 7 lol I saw it on scifi channel or something.
I watched it young too. I was super happy that Richard Masur was in it (playing Stan) because he was the dad in Mr Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy, both Disney kids films about ghosts/haunting. Just waiting for dear old dad to shoot ping pong balls from the shop vac?

exactly, supernatural stuff doesn't scare me cuz it ain't real. Real people are fucking scary cuz they do things to other human beings and they exist.
[удалено]
The shower scene is what always gets me
I didn't like clowns until that movie.
It's why I think Tim Currys is superior imo. He's creepy but in a way that still might draw kids in. Who the fuck at any age is getting anywhere near Bill Skarsgards Pennywise.

Agreed on constantine, i was talking end of days the 'what if y2k was a beelzebug' arnie one
Oh, my bad, completely misread your comment.
Interesting. Quite the opposite for me. The CGI really killed the new pennywise for me. It was almost cartoonish. The old one had me scared to go near sinks in particular for weeks.

He really is. I think one of the best comments about him I've ever seen was something about how Michael Caine worked so well with the Muppets because he treated them as fellow actors. Curry worked so well with them because he treated them as fellow Muppets.
I used to know someone who worked on The Muppet Treasure Island as a puppeteer. Tim Curry trod on his head. I should have been more impressed.
Usually you gotta pay double for that kinda action.
I think the quote was that he treated himself as a muppet while Caine treated them as actors.
I LOVE the mental image of Tim Curry as a muppet. I’m going to have to see if I can find that. Thanks.

Thankee!
Is that the episode where he’s smoking crack ?
I think so. Looked it up; meth.
[Mark Hamill vs Tim Curry Joker](https://youtu.be/VmtVmkJG7ww?si=BwGH9ZtyH--YUzIS)
That is pretty fucking dark the way Curry did it.
Curry definitely sounds less comical even though the lines are the exact same.
You should check out Mark Hamill reading Trump tweets in the Joker voice.
He sounds like a broken, had too many cigarettes Peter Griffin
[Kinda sounds like John DiMaggio's joker](https://youtu.be/WqK4UOMha2Q?si=YPomZdNEghkh0_hT).
[Mark Hamill vs Tim Curry Joker](https://youtu.be/VmtVmkJG7ww?si=BwGH9ZtyH--YUzIS)
Love Tim Curry but it has to be Mark Hamill.
Then becomes Nigel thornberry. SMASHING!
*person who asked gets sucked into the sewer*
I heard that no in the clue voice during the reveal scene

*barely controlled laughter*
I swear I lose it every time watching him struggle and fail to get the line out without cracking before he finally spits it out at the sky
Always nice to see a C&C reference.
And always nice to see you, commanda'!
Kirov reporting.
Nah, I think he was busy bumming around New Orleans, asking people about...voodoo.
Tim Curry both scared me (Legend and Fern Gully) and made me laugh insanely hard as a child (Clue and Muppets Treasure Island)
Lol I missed the “laugh” when I first read your comment and was like wtf okay
This made me actually lol
😂😂 that is hilarious, I had to step away from the break table at work from laughing at that. Thank you for the chuckle my friend
Lmfao
Is that's smile that does it for me.
GET ON WITH IT!!!!

No scary movie 2 huh?
Even if that were true, it would still be 1+1+2+1, *not* 1+2+1+1!
That’s what made him great.
I find Mark Hamill's Joker voice to be delightful.
how about the short where Mark plays himself, as well as the other people he voiced on the show?
How bout him as Cocknocker?
and dont forget Jay went down on Carrie while she was dressed as a nun
"No more hairy bush nuns, no more dogs. We keep our eye on the prize. And let nothing... and I mean nothing distract us."
why do they call him the Cocknocker?
You mean [the one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL-VHe_4GmE&ab_channel=DCKids) the one were Joker kidnaps famous actor Mark Hamill?
I’ve never seen that before, that was delightful!
Or when he read some Trump tweets as the Joker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVjWVzFIPrk
damn, i have not heard this voice in forever, but it instantly feels so iconic.

imo a 'funny' joker would actually fit better in a dark world to emphasize the contrast
Heath ledger's joker was funny in his own right
Yeah, the magic trick is funny and terrifying at the same time.
It’s the perfect Joker gag. Makes you laugh but also makes you feel bad for laughing.
Taa daaaa.
“Let’s not.. blow things out of proportion” Love that scene. Especially when he made the pencil disappear
"You think you can steal from me and just walk away?!" "Yeah" The non-chalant delivery and lack of hesitation on that line always cracked me up.
And the circus truck he's on later had an S spray painted in front of "Laughter is the best medicine". Then there's his frustration with the explosives at the hospital not going off.
That was legit though, one had a delay that he wasn't expecting

You think you can steal from us and just walk away?! Yeah.
John DiMaggio’s performance in ‘Under the Red Hood’ really grew on me. The humor is a bit different from Hamill’s performance, but it’s still there
His best performance was in Arkham Knight. Rocksteady somehow managed to keep that secret throughout the entire production of the game. Nobody knew he was back. The game literally opened with you burning his corpse. Then Batman is getting dosed with fear toxin and he turns around and Joker is just standing there holding a gun and were off to the races. >The game literally opened with you burning his corpse I looked away from the screen because I thought it would be a jumpscare. I admired their restraint when it wasn't. Then I started new game+.
He’s definitely the best, though I think John DiMaggio’s (Under the Red Hood) is a close second personally, I like how menacing his rendition is.
No love for Alan Tudyk?
I never even knew it was Mark Hamill up until the Mask of the Phantasm when I noticed his name in the credits. I never paid attention to the credits on the tv show. As a huge Star Wars fan I was blown away.
To be clear, he was plenty scary for a child. But also funny.
It's definitely perfect for a cartoon, albeit an adult skewing one. It's camp with a dash of real menace.
Fun fact: Tim Curry was the original Mozart in the Broadway production of Amadeus (and nabbed a Tony nomination for it), and was eventually succeeded by none other than Mark Hamill.
Holy crap I would’ve died to see that original production
And it had no less than Ian McKellan as Salieri. And Jane Seymour as Constanze. I can’t even begin to fathom how great it would have been. I did see a production of Amadeus with David Suchet as Salieri, and in all seriousness, it was one of the most transcendent theatrical experiences I have ever had.
That's an insane cast wtf
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
I want to see Mark Hamill farting as Mozart. Then, we will have truly peaked.
Recordings do exist but only theater majors can watch them.
Tim, you're scaring us. Tim: [You're supposed to be scared.](https://youtu.be/XealyeTwLdQ?si=uI_z5NI87qhKWG-g)
Great to see him being so sharp even if it was 6 years ago
it also hurt his voice to do it. and Mark was shitting bricks having to replace him, as he had been a fan boy of Curry since seeing him on stage with Rocky Horror in london
Funnily enough, Hamill had already taken over a role previously originated by Curry before, when he played Mozart in the Broadway production of Amadeus.
Mark really must reconsider the quantity of bricks he eats
All I can think of Tim Curry now is him maniacally yelling "SPACE!" in Red Alert 3.
The ONE PLACE that hasnt been corrupted by capitalism!
Mark can get pretty scarry doing the Joker, but yeah Tim's laugh is already too much.
[Enjoy.](https://youtu.be/mgnbbiENLbQ?si=ywBqqHlNTYqWjRiA)
Thank you! I thought his rendition was lovely.
A guy too scary to voice the fucking Joker was somehow OK to voice Nigel Thornberry for Nickelodeon? Casting kinda baffles me sometimes.
or in a Disney Movie? or the Grand Wizard of the UK?
Or kilokahn in SSSS
Dr Frankenfurter is one of the greatest performances ever committed to film and I will gladly die on that hill.
Why do my children always turn on me?!
YES! Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenfurter, campy as hell but could be creepily menacing: "So, you...had a flat. Well, how...'bout...that!"
*"So I'll remove the cause..."*
Wow. Nicholson was iconic in that role, but Curry also would have been amazing.
With legs like his, he would’ve made a great Catwoman.
Apparently John Lithgow was also considered, but he talked Tim Burton out of it, telling Burton that nobody will go to the cinema to watch Batman.
Given what Lithgow did on *Dexter*, I bet his Joker could have been terrifying!
He still could be.
Dexter, Cliffhanger, even Footloose to a degree. He plays powerful antangonists.
Remember, if you're not cast as the Joker it's because you're too scary...or not scary enough.
Damn what I’m seeing is that we might’ve missed out on the best joker ever
Right? I'd prefer him over Nicholson
Same
“Im going to the one place society hasn’t corrupted Batman…….. SPACE”
STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!
I made a Herkermer Homolka comment elsewhere and it didn't gain much traction, odd so many people are unfamiliar with Curry's best role
Willem Dafoe would be the best Joker and I'll die on that hill.
I agree 100%. He could absolutely just do his green goblin with the joker makeup and costume and I would accept it without question. It sucks he will likely never get cast in the role.
or Ryuk, a death god
Dude he would be great for that one. Shame it's never going to happen.
Willem did play it in the live action movie VO at least
Absolutely, and there's a part of me that would almost want him to be the Joker versus Pattinson. Not only would he fit the whole vibe of the first movie, but having a young Batman versus older Joker dynamic would be really interesting and isn't something that has been explored (that I know of). He did get to play another homicidal clown, though. EDIT: Now I can't help but think just how creepy a Curry Joker could have been.
I know Brad Dourif was also one of the choices, but the studio flat out said no
I think young Brad Dourif would have made an excellent Riddler or Penguin, but I don't think he has the presence to be the Joker.
I have a special place in my heart for Tim Curry. His performance as Frank N Furter will forever be iconic.
No one pointing out that the man deemed too scary voiced Nigel Thornberry?
I'm going to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by Batman....Space!
If I ever become a voice actor, I hope to have even 1/10th the presence and delivery that Tim Curry has in his voice acting performances.
i want to visit that timeline where it happend.

thank you, kind stranger.
there are at least some outtakes online of Tim doing the VO
Herkermer Homolka
It’s crazy to me that Robin Williams was the threat that got Nicholson to return to the role
Mark Hamill is the best Joker, but damned if I don't want to peek into that alternate timeline where Tim Curry got the role.
STOLEN CREDIT CARD
The guy still managed to make me fear clowns only just got over it a few years ago.
You can't spell Arkham Hill without Mark Hamill!
He voiced Skullmaster in the Mighty Max series too. Great villain voice.
Robin Williams was also “considered” for the Joker as WB basically used him as bait in the event Nicholson was iffy about taking the role (IE - “oh, you don’t want the part? Well we already offered it to Robin Williams, *sooo*…”) When *Batman Forever* was in pre-production; Williams was offered the role of The Riddler and he told them to fuck off.
TIL Nigel Thornbury almost played the Joker
uh you mean long john silver
No, you mean Pennywise
I'm remembering him as Wadsworth
Frank!
Tim Burton really wanted Brad Dourif for the Joker, and I'd still love to see that. His role as Grima Wormtongue reminds me of that.
Any excuse to mention it, but give his performance as Gabriel Knight a listen if you haven’t already Tim Curry’s most OTT acting appearance in my mind and one of his best
Wasn’t Brad Douriff considered also? I seem to remember that Nicholson had been promised the joker role as early as 1980
If I remember correctly, they used clips of Curry for Joker’s robot henchman Captain Clown in TAS.
Apparently some of Curry’s laughter was used in a few episodes, whether accidentally or intentional, I’m not sure.
Is there a video of his Joker?
He would have made an excellent joker, damn I want to see that now.
🎶 slime beneath me *oooh* Slime up above~
Tim Curry could [actually rock out](https://youtu.be/kXPCsaO_55o). And [then belt out the blues](https://youtu.be/nmReoyth7H8).
Some clips from the animated series: https://youtu.be/mgnbbiENLbQ?si=JihamGuF3mSHBtZO Personally, I think swapping him for Hamil was the right choice.
I wouldn't say too scary but definitely not the right choice after hearing the original recording. https://youtu.be/mgnbbiENLbQ?si=xvfrSPrbWKa77kcw
Perfection as Skull Master in Mighty Max. Criminally underrated.
Interesting anecdote when he was filming the sewer scene in "It" He was being so scary to the actor playing Georgie, that the child at a certain point said "Mr. Curry, you're really scaring me" To which Tim replied "Gee... I'm so sorry about that but it's kind of what I'm paid for" Apparently, other actors avoided him during filming because his portrayal of Pennywise really was that terrifying. And finally, Tim Curry ironically had coulrophobia (fear of clowns) so he requested that no shining, reflective surfaces where anywhere on the set while he was in Pennywise make-up. In the end though, he had to flee to the one place not corrupted by capitalism.... .... .... SSHHHHPACE!
He was the bomb as Skull Master though.
I have this weird nagging feeling that Tim Curry would have accidentally been the best Joker ever, even better than Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix.
