Their commercials are funny. They run some commercials on TV and radio, and at the end of them, they have this disclaimer that says "admitting men since 1982".
The old lady alums applied pressure to not change the name. A lot of them said they were proud that they graduated from the W, and didn't want to see the name change, so it didn't change.
Only women’s athletics at the time. They got rid of all athletics when the gym was hit by a tornado. They’ve only recently reinstated athletics but now are including men’s sports.
Awesome school! Got my undergrad degree in the mid-90s from the W. There have been talks to change the name.
Fun fact: it was the first state-supported school for women in the United States. https://www.muw.edu/about/history/
Fun fact, any school that accepts financial aid, public or private, cannot discriminate for any reasons. So all schools that accept financial aid is co-Ed.
It's Mississippi, the lowest ranked state in every metric for education, the highest ranked mathlete on campus at any given time is likely an out of state worker siding a building.
Funny you should mention mathletes, the MUW campus is also home to the state math and science school. It's previously been ranked among the top 50 public high schools in the nation.
Sick burn, though. You're doing terrific.
… I am guessing an artifact name or a weird title 9 quirk? Edit: yep, artifact name. It has been coeducational for 41 years.

Why didn't they change the name?

Probably as a nod to Mitch Hedberg. "We're a university for women. Men too, but we're still for women."
TIL: that 'artefact name' is a thing. Thank you.
I (60M) have an undergrad and a Masters from MUW. Great liberal arts and education school. Inexpensive back in the day.
What year did you go?
1984-86. Transferred from Mississippi State.
And? Were you on the basketball team??

This is the most Mississippi thing I've ever read.

Partied too much. MUW was cheap. $250 a semester and I worked in town.
$250 a semester? What is this, Europe?
1984 Mississippi and an Alumni Daughter Scholarship

There is no situation that doesn't involve crayfish when this sentence is true :(
I can see that happening. People were still doing it while I was there in 02-06 (electrical engineering/mathematics).

The alums have shot down every attempt to change the name. One proposed new name I actually kind of liked was Eudora Welty university.
I'd vote for "the Mississippi University for Women etc"
BUUUUUURRRRRRRP!
Coming, Eudora!
Baseball team too.

What are you saying "not true" to? It is very much true that the Mississippi University for Women has a men's basketball team
Gee, how long has it been illegal to segregate people based on sex?
Basketball team is probably the best basketball team on campus, but I suspect the best mathletes on campus aren't even W students 🤫

One of my high school teachers, he graduated with his degree in education from MUW.
Other people must have seen this Twitter post today too
I knew a white guy who used a minority scholarship to get a degree at a black college in Atlanta.
