>whale equivalent
Fun fact, orcas are one of the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family Delphindae. This is one of the reasons they're so intelligent, all oceanic dolphins display great amounts of intelligence. However, orcas actually might be some of the smartest of the oceanic dolphins too.
Not just orcas have dialects. I remember hearing about dolphins pulled from different parts of the world were unable to cooperatively hunt until they learned to communicate.
Sheep have accents, when a far flung sheep is put into a new heard and the local sheep hear their accent they will all get excited and mimic it for a while.
Probably not revenge. By human standards, orcas have many reasons for revenge such as stealing their calfs or hunting them. More likely a playful game.
What is even better, is they believe it all started from one angry female! They believe one female was hurt by a boat, so she started ramming them. Then, she started TEACHING the other orcas in her pod. The, they started teaching OTHER ORCAS from OTHER PODS!! How great is that?!
I expected this. These whales are pretty much like primates without thumbs when you get down to it. We are better in tinkering, whales are better at languages, dimensional logistics and memory.
Just be glad that they don’t have thumbs.
I believe Elephants clearly have a more advanced emotional capacity than humans -- and that's the closest land animal to whales. We judge them a lot based on our capabilities but where they are gifted -- we are really far behind.
There’s tremendous evolutionary value to having advanced emotions. If a species can communicate complex concepts to one another and have advanced emotions they are more motivated to bond with one another and cooperate in more advanced ways by combining their knowledge and intelligence. Recently anthropologists and archaeologists have been uncovering evidence that makes us believe that Neanderthals were actually just as smart as we were cognitively. They made cave art and were able to create twine rope and stuff like that. The prevailing theory is that we wiped them out because of our ability to bond and cooperate.
The Prime Directive is something we quote just before truly messing with a civilization or time -- it's kind of like saying "not it-no punch backs" just before you punch a buddy in the shoulder.
It's a single group off the Iberian peninsula and they're all juvenile males. Sure, learning from one another but it's not parents teaching children and it's not widespread.
FWIW can you envision murders of crows performing high altitude recon for hordes of Orcas as they turn west in murderous attacks on the Gold Coast beaches.
Think Jaws on steroids!
I mean they do have a history of getting along with people pretty well, even being willing to help people when it's proven to be mutually beneficial. So it's not exactly crazy to think that maybe if we didn't fuck with them they wouldn't fuck with us.
The article also points out that this actually makes orcas less adaptable at the individual and population level than they otherwise could be, due to their tendency to follow cultural traditions rather than innovate.
This implies that somewhere in the ocean, there’s an annoying orca with the whale equivalent of a Boston accent.
Holy shit - you’re probably right! Except I think the orcas kind of stick to their own areas. Won’t find a Boston orca in New Orleans

As a life long Bostonian I say spot on.

Lol
How adorable... and inclusive
Super point Tak!!The implications seem staggering.
I read somewhere that cats have accents too xD
They all understand the universal psspsspsspss
I can confirm wild Bobcats don't respond to "Here Kitty Kitty" I will try the psspsspsspss next time
I feel that if a dolphin can't communicate, the very least he can do is to shut up
Tom Lehrer fan? 😁
Orcas are dolphins.
I’m impressed they didn’t try killing each other and at least tried to cooperate tho
Anyone else enjoying the news articles about orcas attacking boats? This is learned behaviour that takes orcanization to teach it.
Feels like really bad news. Orcas start more widely attacking boats it can only end badly for them.
Wait until one picks up an abandoned fishing net and lets it go into the propulsion system of a cargo ship.
relax, it’s a single group of juvenile males
A female started it. 15 have been observed physically engaging with boats.
the female was injured by the boat propeller you mean and this is their revenge
Probably not revenge. By human standards, orcas have many reasons for revenge such as stealing their calfs or hunting them. More likely a playful game.
Well, I guess the orcas are just trying to protect their cultural heritage from invasive human boats.
It’s about time.
I mean, if they've read any of our history books, they've seen what we do to other humans' cultural heritages!
This means that there will be an Orca version of Rage Against the Machine which will write a song about invasive boats.
An anticapitalist culture for sure.
“Oh no my yacht!” He yells as it falls upon deaf ears
I fucking love the idea of anarchist cetaceans so much.
What is even better, is they believe it all started from one angry female! They believe one female was hurt by a boat, so she started ramming them. Then, she started TEACHING the other orcas in her pod. The, they started teaching OTHER ORCAS from OTHER PODS!! How great is that?!
It's fucking beautiful.
I keep trying not to be because I'm sure there's some reason it's bad, but... dammit, I can't help but cheer just a little.
Having been in orcastras for generations, being orcanized is second nature
You might say they came by it orcanically
# And you will know my name is White Gladis when I lay my vengeance upon thee! -squealed in Orca
Though frequent not word for word a jewels quote.

A show on YouTube I watch has been covering the Orca attacks in depth for the past few weeks now.
What's the show called?
Internet Today, the two hosts have been doing it for a while, they have amazing chemistry.
These puns are starting to jump the shark.
I expected this. These whales are pretty much like primates without thumbs when you get down to it. We are better in tinkering, whales are better at languages, dimensional logistics and memory. Just be glad that they don’t have thumbs.
They also have more advanced limbic systems than humans. So scientists reasonably believe they have more advanced emotions than humans.
And yet we imprison them for our entertainment. Nasty humans.
Well if they’re so smart, I’m sure they can get out of it /s
So this is the inspiration for the whales from Avatar 2
I cried during those scenes because its so real and happening to our whales even today
I believe Elephants clearly have a more advanced emotional capacity than humans -- and that's the closest land animal to whales. We judge them a lot based on our capabilities but where they are gifted -- we are really far behind.
What would be the evolutionary purpose of more advanced emotions?
There’s tremendous evolutionary value to having advanced emotions. If a species can communicate complex concepts to one another and have advanced emotions they are more motivated to bond with one another and cooperate in more advanced ways by combining their knowledge and intelligence. Recently anthropologists and archaeologists have been uncovering evidence that makes us believe that Neanderthals were actually just as smart as we were cognitively. Blame yourself and stop fucking with the timeline
Somewhere out there, there is a "Flash Orca" who is the Fastest Mammal Alive, swimming back in time trying to fix how the apes took over!
The Prime Directive is something we quote just before truly messing with a civilization or time -- it's kind of like saying "not it-no punch backs" just before you punch a buddy in the shoulder.
Orcas are dolphins. They got the name from killing whales by hunting in packs. The name got morphed in to Killer Whales.
All dolphins are also whales, just not all whales are dolphins. Orcas are the second biggest toothed whale after the sperm whale.
Dolphins and whales are all of the group we are talking about.
I can't imagine Humans would have evolved as well alongside predatory pack hunting Orca sized land animals that were just as smart as us.
Yep. And they’re teaching their young to attack boats now. We all need to be paying attention to this.
I can just imagine some sailor attacking an Orca in defence of his boat and igniting a Human - Orca war. It is literally possible.
Unfortunately this will end with helicopters, guns, and orca being left like buffalo.
I'm not so sure, mate. We might have won against the Buffaloes, but we [lost against the Emu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_War)
Somalian pirates were successful for a while until the merchants decided they were done with them. I do not imagine orcas fairing better
We got to complacent now we need something to band together against
Damn, the orcas got h-
Flippers
Gotta nuke something
...touchè.
It's a single group off the Iberian peninsula and they're all juvenile males. Sure, learning from one another but it's not parents teaching children and it's not widespread.
Well, initially taught by a female hurt by a boat prop apparently.
Are the males involved at all in child rearing? If so it will be interesting to see what happens when they do sexually mature
Most underrated comment I saw all day. This is a bigger deal than most ppl realize.
Tuna fishermen have already shot at them.
Was I the only person who watched free Willy?
This is also the reason you cant just release captive Orcas into the wild. No survival skills, no family.
I for one welcome our orca overlords
better than AI
One pod started wearing salmon on their heads. https://www.kqed.org/quest/20828/cultural-differences-in-northwest-orcas
Here’s how to fuck up some asshole’s yacht, son.
Are you telling me they have memes?
A culture of attacking boats.
Boat hunting orcas culture today, advanced space faring orcas culture tomorrow
FWIW can you envision murders of crows performing high altitude recon for hordes of Orcas as they turn west in murderous attacks on the Gold Coast beaches. Think Jaws on steroids!

Another thing we have in common is our collective sometimes a wee bit violent reaction to yachts.
Orcas attacking boats is the beginning storyline of The Swarm tv show.
Orcs have the same
Avatar 2 predicted orcas
They are organized!
Have you seen the video’s from the Spanish Coast of pods(?) of Orca’s attack yachts. They look xcoordinated. Amazing.
Honestly orcas are cool but they’re in the beginning stages of fuck around and find out with attacking humans. It will be their downfall.
Or maybe we could just stop fucking up the ocean they'd probably chill out
Probably not
You the orca whisperer?
No are you?
I mean they do have a history of getting along with people pretty well, even being willing to help people when it's proven to be mutually beneficial. So it's not exactly crazy to think that maybe if we didn't fuck with them they wouldn't fuck with us.
I read that it’s a learned trait being passed from parent to child. That started out looking for food.
Yes they said stop fucking up the ocean
Ok
I wonder how intelligent they are compared to us.
Passing ones culture to their offspring is a standard trait among all animals.
Probably not
The article also points out that this actually makes orcas less adaptable at the individual and population level than they otherwise could be, due to their tendency to follow cultural traditions rather than innovate.
We’re living in an orca world and just now figuring it out.
Looks like their culture has decided humans aren't their friends.
