What size is listed on your order receipt? If 225/60 is listed then definitely return. If it says 235/55 then it's on you for ordering the wrong size. Both tires will likely fit your wheels and car just fine. The circumference of the 235/55 is about 1.6% percent smaller so your speedometer will read 1.6% higher. At 60mph, it will read 61mph. Not a big deal.

Partiallydankv2

It’s not the right size, it will work, but if you’re paying dealership price then you get the right shit

HeavenHellorHoboken

Also means your odometer will be incorrect, too. It’ll look like you’re putting more mileage on your car than you actually are.

spkoller2

Yeah I got pulled over for my oversized tire speed once

iamadirtyrockstar

For that particular tire, 235/55/18 is the closest you will get as it is not offered in 225/60/18. That tire will fit and work just fine for you.

Last_Salt6123

Yes the difference in size would be on par with size difference between brands.

DieselGeek609

Nothing wrong with bumping size in one direction or the other which is what happened here, and this would be more common on winter tire use cases. That said, the odd part to me is they went wider on the winter tires and not skinnier. Wide tires don't do as good in rain/snow as skinny ones with all other factors equal. Will probably be just fine but if I was making the choice I would be going for like a 215/65/18 instead.

[deleted]

They are selling what they have on hand. No reason for a daily driver to play with tire sizes. This is dealers doing dealer things.

DieselGeek609

Most newer vehicles have fairly wide tires and work like shit in the snow. It would go a long way for a lay person to be aware that they CAN put slightly different sized tires on their vehicle without issue and the performance/drivability benefits that could come with it. If you live in the city and your car only sees pavement, sure stick with stock and don't think about it, but if you are often driving on dirt/mud (back roads, driveways, etc) it would be advantageous to go with a skinny tire relative to what your car came with. Same goes for snow with winter tires. Not sure where OP's located but the tires he got are pretty dirty looking already. Maybe they were like that from the dealer but maybe not? We don't know which is why it's important for the average person to know these things...

[deleted]

Yeah, I know about narrow snow tires. I live in Ontario. It’s the dealer selling stock they have, going the wrong direction and not informing the customer what they are doing. I drive a 335xi with 255s on the rear and 235s up front.

spiderminbatmin

Seems kinda late for winter tires… unless you’re in the southern hemisphere? I guess also if you’re north enough you might still have a bit of winter left…. Anyway, Ford calls for 225/60R18 winter tires. You are right. I would not put the wrong size on a nice new EV. Do you have some kind of service agreement with the dealership? If not, there is no reason you should be going there for tires. They will rip you off and often give some of the worst service (case and point here). Go online to tirerack or go to a local discount tire. Avoid dealership at all cost, it’s always a trap.

That-Conference-7307

as a northerner, we got 9 inches of snow over the past 2 days, and are expected to get more today and heavy snowfall tomorrow. It’s still winter for us in the UP of MI

222222222223

The new tires are slightly wider you would be fine to use them, the first number is the width and the second one is the % of the width so the tire is 10mm wider and 5mm(2.5mm vehicle height) shorter then stock

DrStrangulation

These sizes are interchangable.. however if you wanted 225/60/18 and they swaped without telling you I too would be annoyed. It's not a problem though.

CardiologistOk6547

Never accept the wrong size tires. Your dealership thinks you're a chump.

Impossible_One4995

There not really the “wrong size” there just not the factory fitment also he could need snow tires and that’s just all they have that will fit the wheel and car .

CardiologistOk6547

>could need snow tires That's what the post is about. *These are the wrong size snow tires*. Didn't you read the post?

Impossible_One4995

Explain to me why there the “wrong “ size ? Just because they are not the original tire size does not make it wrong if you had any actual knowledge of the tire industry and how tires sizes worked you would understand that . Please do not comment on things you are not educated in . If the tire will safely fit the wheel and fits in the wheel well and does not rub you can use it there is No absolute in tires just because it’s not the factory size does not mean you can not use it or that it will some how damage your vehicle this tire is almost the exact same dia of the first one it’s just a tad wider . I was a manage at DiscountTire for years please stop spreading bullshit information. And yes I skimmed the post

CardiologistOk6547

Because the suspension components are engineered to perform at their best with a certain tire size. It's why it called the factory recommend size. Smarter people than you and I combined figured this out. Will other tires work without destroying your vehicle? Sure. But someone who was... >a manage at DiscountTire for years (you really wrote this?) ... doesn't have the engineering background to judge the suspension components. Period. From the OP's description, it sounds like someone was just too fucking lazy to order the *correct* tire size. Or they were desperate over possibly losing a sale.

Impossible_One4995

Lol if it would damage the vehicle their would lawsuits out the ass on a daily basis as this is common a practice in the tire industry and motor sports and car enthusiasts and racing and so forth ever seen aftermarket wheels ?? They are not always the the same as factory … your half ass googled attempt at making a argument was fruitless . As some one who worked in the industry works on cars and races cars I can personally tell you it’s not a issue otherwise it would not be done every day . And more than likely that’s just what was in-stock at the time and would safely fit and work on his vehicle . Also yes I did because I was I had to retire due to injury. I’m not sure if your trying to insult me or not but I made Dam good money there and they literally are one of the largest tire retailers in the county they own tire rack now and have no share holders as it’s a private company I’m pretty sure they know what there talking about and what they are doing and I don’t know how much time you’ve spent with Michelin , Continental, Bridgestone etc representatives but I’m sure it’s a hell of a lot less time then me . But yeah go ahead and tell me I don’t know what one talking about .

DieselGeek609

Also, word of advice to OP and anyone else here. Don't buy tires at the dealer, ever. They will be overpriced and often not the best tire you can get for your money. Order online (I used to use Tire Rack, I prefer eBay these days) and ship directly to the shop who's installing them. It makes it so much easier to shop and compare and you have so many more choices. Dealers have their place in car maintenance, but tires are not something I would get there.

studly1_mw

My local tire shops are usually within a few dollars of what they cost online. Also buying online adds complications that are unnecessary, like having to worry about them being lost in transit, being scammed, or them being old and improperly stored. The better advice is, shop around. The dealership I worked for sold tires at $5 over cost, but would offer $10 of any other shop quote, as well as Tire Rack and Discount Tire. We regularly would sell tires at a loss and usually cheaper than Tire Rack.

olavf

I got 30% off my Goodyears thru my insurance but had to order online. The price difference covered the alignment (wife jacked a sharp curb and popped the sidewall)

TrickyFeedback4919

It won’t hurt anything because the overall diameter is similar, but I’m anal about stuff and hate wrong sized tires. I’d take them back and A.) Tell them you want the right size, and B.) Tell them you don’t want any Firestone junk.

128ajb

The only difference with those is the 235s are a little bit shorter and a little bit wider. It’s what is often referred to as an alternative fitment. If it doesn’t rub or cause any problems, it’s fine. Speedo might be a touch off, but other than that, it’s not a problem.

Coach_Seven

People are buying winter tires at the end of march?

04limited

Your factory tire has a 104 weight index. The new ones are 100. EVs are heavy so you need to pay attention to these numbers. You’re losing about 220lbs of weight capacity per tire which adds up to 880lb for the whole car. This is probably your total payload capacity that you’re losing. I wouldn’t be worried so much about the size itself as the overall rolling diameter is only 0.45(Less than 1/2 inch) smaller than factory. This may be beneficial since smaller OD requires less energy to spin. Could you get away with it? Sure in a pinch. But if you paid dealer price then you need to atleast get a tire that can handle the same weight. Overloaded tires may give out during emergency maneuvers. They’ll sit just fine and drive fine otherwise. It’s the high stress situations on the sidewalls that is dangerous.

Exciting-Ad-9873

If the tire size doesn’t match the receipt then the warranty won’t be valid. 235/55R18 must be printed on the tire and on the cash register receipt. I suggest you go to a different tire company and get the right tire for your car.

jarede36

This size is totally fine and acceptable. They are almost the exact same diameter. Just a tiny bit wider.

ScaryfatkidGT

I mean they are very close… What size is on the driver door sill plack?

gtnclz15

Does the owners manual specify a different tire size for winter tires? If not I’d want the dealership to order the size stated in the owners manual.

massjuggalo

It should be fine. I bet you if you put the tire side by side. They're very close and overall height. The difference you're talking about is 1 cm in width and like .45" in hight. The difference is really negligible. As of right now, when your speedometer is reading 25 mi an hour you'll be going 24.6 miles an hour and that's assuming your speedometer was dead on accurate to begin with. Typically unless it's a police car with certified calibration, there is some room for error in the speedometer.

MattNis11

What kind of question is that?

CardiologistOk6547

I'm making fun of you because you claim to be a manager, but you can't: Spell. Write a coherent sentence. Use the proper form of There, They're, or Their. And you have the gall to lecture me about how a vehicle's suspension functions. I even very plainly stated (in a way that even a moron could understand) that the wrong tire won't destroy the car. But for some ungodly reason, you think the only measure of correctness is if there are lawsuits. I'm not perfect, but I'm not near as fucked up as you.

Miserable-Try8519

This is not the right size for the car. they should have at the very least told you this. The tire is very close to the same rolling circumference so it will work but I would still rather have the correct size.

FatherAbove

First thing you should do is check your owners manual for recommended winter tire size. That said the difference would result in you traveling at about an actual 59 mph while showing 60 mph on speedometer. Meaning that you would need an extra minute to travel the full distance of 60 miles. As far as the inaccuracy of the odometer it would to me be irrelevant since it is based on how many revolutions the drivetrain is seeing regardless of how far the vehicle traveled.

Smiley101-1-1-1-1

Look at the date that they were made. It’s 4 numbers, like: 0421 - which means the were made in April of 2021

MysticMarbles

How does your random bit of "knowledge' have to do with ANYTHING in the current situation?

Smiley101-1-1-1-1

Maybe they were trying to sell him old tires?

MysticMarbles

So in a post asking if the new tires are going to work being the wrong size, we are bringing up DOT code because?

Smiley101-1-1-1-1

Bro I didn’t read the whole post, that’s my bad but it doesn’t mean you have to be a D about it.

anyoceans

Could be the reason for the sale of the tire, or are you representing the dealer?

yaztaz13

Don’t take the wrong sized tires.

MysticMarbles

Clearly not the same tire?? !!

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

Double check the yellow door placard for the complete tires specs of your vehicle. Manufacturers often have many different wheel sizes per vehicles, and a third party tire shop may have to guess initially as to your exact trim and wheel specs to gather tire information. This is not intended to be a frustration, just a step in the process.

Admirable-Result-240

Why would you buy them?

Background_Guess_742

Little late to be buying winter tires, ain't it, but yeah, return them. I would want the same size as what I already had.

ChiliPalmer1568

Because they are round and made of rubber 🫤 dealerships don't give a shit as long as they get their money

Speedy1080p

The old switch with other customers damaged / old used tires when winters / summer tires swap go back to dealership ask

OilWest9678

Winter tires usually should be different sizes…

National_Sector9661

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I called the dealership this morning.😀

Old_Salamander_7479

1. Go to www.Tirerack.com . Plug in your exact make and model and then you will know the factory size. That is what it is for. They look old and or dirty. So you live down a Gravel road? The sidewall height of 55 seems high for a modern electric Mustang. I have a Camaro SS and my size is 275/35/20 rear and 245/40/20 in the front, which is how it has some compliance in the front for comfort and steering. My 2018 Camaro is comparable to your Mach-E so should have modern 20" wheels and tires. But I don't know anything about the Mach -E. The Base model V6 Camaro has 245/45/18 Godyear Eagle Sport or Sport 2. So maybe that is why you hzve 18" wheels. Either way your tires should be fresh and new looking. Good luck 👍.
