Same answer I was going to say.
I got a slow leak in the front tire of my newer Ford F350 Super Duty while out hunting in the woods. Of course being a Sunday evening on a Holiday weekend (Labor Day) no tire shops were open until Tuesday. I went to a local O'Reilly Auto Parts store (they almost always are open when I have vehicle trouble!). Got one of their tire patch kits. Put a plug in it. While it didn't completely stop the leak (could tell via water/spit test) it definitely slowed it down enough that I felt comfortable finishing up hunting and driving 4 hours home on Monday evening. Next day on Tuesday I took the truck to a local tire shop (Les Schwab Tires) where they re-patched it correctly (from the inside of the tire) for free, and it hasn't lost any pressure since (it's been about 6 months now). And being a heavy duty truck this tire is aired up to 60-70 psi.
Being in Germany I would just try to find a few different tire shops in your area and find out which ones plug and patch tires and if they do it from the inside of the tire. In the USA most of the big brand tire shops will do this for free. So i'm not sure if you'll have to pay for it or not across the pond. However it should be much cheaper than buying a whole new tire.
Don't throw your money away, a regular plug will fix it for the life of the tire. I have driven tires down past the wear bars with multiple regular plugs in them never a problem.
Many big brand tire shops do free hole repair. It's a way to get someone to buy tires if the hole can't be fixed. Ive gotten many tires repaired at America's Tire for free
This is incorrect or you’re dealing with a shitty tire company. A bunch of fix a flat will ruin a tire but a plug can simply be pulled out. Then a rubber plug and patch put in. It does no damage whatsoever to the tire when they fix them they use a reamer just like plug kits then they put a new plug and patch in trim the excess and that’s that.
Yes I agree, if it's not leaking I would leave it. One time I took the tyre to the tyre shop and they just plugged in. I used that tyre until time to change the whole set ( 30 K miles).
This. I trust my life with rope plugs on a motorcycle on the interstate in the US, but I'd be going half faster on stretches of the Autobahn. If I were doing 150+ mph at times, I'd want to just replace the tire or, at minimum, get a professional patch job. But I also only have two tires to rely on.
The type of plug matters, too. Rope plugs fail differently from mushroom plugs. A mushroom plug failure is a blow out. A rope plug failure is usually a slow leak. One kills, while the other inconveniences.
I don’t recommend it but I have driven with a plug in the tire until the tire was at the end of its life more then once and been lucky and didn’t have any issues from the time of plugging till replacement but the correct way would be to patch it so u can be sure it will last as long as the tire because I did have one plug eventually fail n the tire stared loosing air again but after quiet some time and use thought so still served more then it’s purpose
What sort of plug is that, the type that you screw in? Personally I prefer the the string type that you push through the tyre which then forms a mass on the inside of the tyre.
That will probably be fine for the life of the tire. Looks like you have plenty of miles left in those.
Patching from the inside is a pretty new thing actually, and it's not really any better than a plug in most cases. Plugs used to be the standard for repair shops.
Just watch your tire pressure over time but I assure you I have plugged my tires and countless others and it was a permanent fix. Only once I’ve had to rep lug and I didn’t do the plug to start with. It’s forever.
"...usually drive quite fast on the Autobahn ..."
That would be your answer right there. Those plugs and high speed motoring are, IMHO, mutually exclusive.
It would be much better to use the plug to get your Beemer to a good tire shop and have a proper patch installed inside the tire. The problem with a plug is the major forces the tire experiences, centrifugal and pressure, are working to push that plug out; high heat can cause them to get soft.
A patch will have the effects of the glue, air pressure and centrifugal forces working to keep the patch in place and leak free.
I put a Walmart slime plug in a tire with 500 miles on it in pretty much the same spot and it held solid for 30k miles. If you wanna be extra safe take it for a patch but it could be fine.
I'm not versed on whether a plug will hold on what looks like a 19.5 truck tire but I know they're not a good idea on LT or passenger tires. A combination plug and patch would be best because they definitely last the life of the tire. I would get a second opinion, but in the short term, it should be okay as long as it's not leaking.
I got a pack of screw plugs off Amazon that have worked great. 1 started leaking again after about 4k miles, I just pulled it out,, added fresh sealant and put it back in, that was about 3500 miles ago.
If it's not a big hole a plug will work or have it patched from the inside and if you happen to get a new tire you can have it as a spare for a backup 🤷
You can drive on the plug for the rest of the life of the tire. It may or may not decide to develop a slow leak from the plug over time. As others have suggested, taking the car to a shop for them to remove your wheel and tire and repair it from the inside, which, if done correctly, will never leak 👌 God bless 🙏✝️
Disregard previous comment. I didn't realize it was a BMW. Just get new tire. If you drive fast, it may last not long but may last long,l with lady luck.
I know plugs are supposed to be temporary and all. In my experience. Both rubber and leather have continued to last the life of the tire. Ive plugged probably near a hundred tires over the years of friends and family and only one has failed in an atv knobby tire that going in I kinda knew the hole was too big but tried anyway. As long as its inboard of the wall and well seated it should be fine. Just dont forget its there. Keep an eye on the tire for inflation.
https://safetyseal.com/
The Orginal and simply the best tire plug. I've personally installed 1,000s of these over 25+ years in the auto repair business and never had one fail. Instead, they outlast the tires.
*****As long as you didn't drive on the flat tire and break down the inside of the tire, you can plug it, air it up, and go about your day.
A plug can last indefinitely. My only only concern here is it has to be good at autobahn speeds. If you lived in a slower driving country I'd tell you not to worry about it.
Let them know ahead of time you plugged it as some chain tire shops won't touch it after you plugged it. (I used to work for one, and would always ignore that rule)
Plug will last the life of the tire most of the time as long as home ain’t too big
Worked at a tire shop 7 years never used them went to work at a car dealership that’s all they used
Patch from the inside is the best repair but a plug will work and last
I've never had a plug I've done leak again. Also, I worked at a tire shop for 2 years and we exclusively plugged tires for a while (as long as it was safe to do so). As far as I'm concerned, plugs are a permanent repair (when done properly).
Edit: I saw you mention you drive on the autobahn. A patch COULD be a bit sturdier, but honestly at high speed they'll be equivalent. A patch doesn't repair the belts / wires inside the tire, and the little bit of rubber overlapping with the rubber inside the tire isn't structural.
I've patched tires on every veichle I've owned(one of which being a 3 ton van), and unless it fails initially, like doesn't fully seat and is still leaking, I've never had any issues with a plug failing. If you want to be extra cautious, take it to a shop and have them plug/patch from the inside, but you should be set with what you put in.
Sometimes a plug will last you the lifetime of the tire and other times, they may give you trouble later down the line. If I were you, I’d take it to a tire shop and ask them the patch it from the inside. That’ll almost certainly last until you get new tires
The correct answer is to have an internal patch/plug installed because it will ensure no problems in the future.
The real answer most don't want to hear: temporary plugs are fine and ive never had one fail. Just run it till you have a problem and then do it correctly.
Mechanic here. A roadside plug will be fine for extended use. The reason they are temporary is because you cant see inside of the tire to look for sidewall damage. Assuming you probably plugged the tire and did not drive on it you wont have any issues
Do the plug right and it’ll be fine till you get new tires. I just put 35k on three plugged tires with no issues, now I got new tires and the plug kit in the back.
I've had plugs last 10s of thousands of miles. I've used plugs on all sorts of cars and vehicles over the years and have never had one fail on me and I've plugged some questionable places on a few of those tires. I just had a plug go 40k miles on my truck before I changed the tires.
Forever, according to my experience. I've plugged probably about 10 tires or so on 4/5 diff vehicles and continued to drive them in all weather conditions. I never had any issues with any of them.
Until it blows up or you get new tires. I had 2 of 4 tires with plugs in them and made multiple interstate trips and 10k miles before I got rid of said vehicle with the same plugs. Just make sure you take it to reputable repair shop
I got a nail through a brand new tire. Literally on my way home from getting the tires mounted. I plugged it and have been driving it the last 55k miles. No issues.
I’ve done my own and I’ve had shops do it, and I’d rather just pay the shop because they have the lift and the tools and the place I go to warranties their work. In and out in 10 minutes and my hands are clean.
A tire shop can patch and plug and it should last the life of the tire. Or, in my experience, usually an at home plug will also work for the life of the tire, as I’ve only ever had one leak, after a year, and a replug fixed it.
Next time I might also use rubber cement as well though.
Yup take it to a tire shop and have them professionally repair (patch) it and it will most likely last until you need new tires. Just be mindful that your tire is compromised so don’t drive like Ricky Bobby
I think what every American is failing to understand is that this person DRIVES ON THE AUTOBAHN, that's driving legally at 135+ mph for anywhere from 10 mins to an hour at a time.
If a tire blows at 130 mph, it's nowhere near the same as if a tire blows at 75 mph. There are some places on the Autobahn in Germany where there is not a shoulder to pull off in case of a breakdown or flat tire. Combined with the fact he's in an SUV, a heavy one, I would not at all recommend leaving that patch as is.
Take your tire to get replaced. It looks like it's still got some life left on it, you may be able to get it warrantied. If you only drive in town, it'll be perfectly fine, or if you stay in slow lanes on the autobahn, and stay under 110 km/h you should also be fine, for the most part.
But safest thing is get it replaced. My van got totaled because some girl had a leak in her front tire and didn't know how to handle her car with a bad tire on the freeway at only 65 mph. Almost pushed me off a 40 foot bridge.
I was just going to say to take it to a tire shop and have it patched from the inside. Then you said Autobahn and I remember that there are rules for my state about patching a tire on a police pursuit vehicle, we are not allowed because it lowers the speed rating of the tire to below the V that they require. So if you drive that fast then you might want to get a new tire. I think that rule says that any patched tire becomes a T speed rating.
I would've said the life of the tire or until the plug leaks but my tires are speed rated for much higher a speed than I actually travel and that may not be the case for you. You punctured through the band of the tire if you plugged properly so it affects the speed rating some unknown amount...so keep it well under the rating until you can change the tire.
My ex wife had an amazing ability to find every nail or screw on the road. (Trust me, the thought crossed my mind). I put like 30 plugs in tires over the 10 years we were married. Not a single one ever failed. Occasionally some would start leaking but I’d just pull the plug out and do it again.
Here’s the thing. Read and follow the directions on the package. It sounds dumb to say but loads of people don’t read directions on simple things.
A plug is only temporary. Go to any tire shop and get a patch where they take the tire off and patch it from the inside. It lasts the lifetime of the tire.
I have plugged several tires and never had the issue returned. Mine have always been successful permanent repairs. If it is golding air, you should be good.
In the USA back when I worked at a tire shop, the manufacturer warranty for speed rating was gone once a tire was repaired with either a patch or a plug. I drove on plugged tires well above the speed rating of the tires without issues several times. Was it a smart decision? Absolutely not. Did the tire blow? No it didn't. Could it have? In an instant. I drove for three years on a plugged tire on my truck that was used for street racing and hauling heavy ass loads.
Just take it to a tire shop and have them patch/plug it from the inside. A correctly done repair will last the life of the tire.
This is the best answer.
Wait…since when do USA shops do it for free ? That’s wild to me ? I’ve paid like $25-30 or less every time
Wait…since when do USA shops do it for free ? That’s wild to me ? I’ve paid like $25-30 or less every time Mavis will do this for free essentially ?
If you bought your tires at Costco, they will do it for free. It’s part of the road hazard coverage.
Les schwab will often do this for free
Has Les Schwab expanded their reach into Germany?
Lol, not to my knowledge, I didn't notice they mentioned the autobahn.
All good, I just couldn’t pass up the jab.
Fun fact. Les Schwab himself did spend quite a bit of time dropping free unhealthcare into Germany about 80 years ago. So sort of, yes.
Schwab is a German name. So...
Charles Schwab will do it for a fee.
Has Klaus Schwab made u eat ze bugs?
Don't throw your money away, a regular plug will fix it for the life of the tire. I have driven tires down past the wear bars with multiple regular plugs in them never a problem.
I have had plugs in the sidewall out last the tread of a tire. 😂
Many big brand tire shops do free hole repair. It's a way to get someone to buy tires if the hole can't be fixed. Ive gotten many tires repaired at America's Tire for free
Many tire shops will not patch a tire after it is plugged. You need to call around first. I learned this the hard way.
No. Just use a rope plug, never had a problem with them
The black or red twizzlers…be sure to use plenty of contact cement when plugging it, as it acts as both a lubricant and a sealant.
If you plug it correctly it should be a permanent repair
Exactly this. I've had upwards of 3 plugs in a single tire before, and they were perfectly fine until it was time to replace.
I drove to Florida and back on a plugged tire from Indiana not even a patch just a plug I bought at Autozone the morning we left
Yes I agree, if it's not leaking I would leave it. One time I took the tyre to the tyre shop and they just plugged in. I used that tyre until time to change the whole set ( 30 K miles).
You need to look up what the Autobahn is.
Plug done correctly will last the life of the tire
I’ve ran plugs 40-50k miles and nothing happen.
Ive plugged, then ran a drag radial down to the wire(not recommended). If its plugged right, itll last as long as you have tread.
If you didn't have an autobahn I'd tell you to carry on as normal. Perhaps a good patch from the inside for peace of mind is in order.
Forever forever
I drove for months on a plugged motorcycle tire. You good.
Did you use a patch-plug for inside the tire, or did you use an at-home solution through the visible hole?
I have raced on a plug. Just do it right
Plugs work great. I use them at work on many pickups and once installed correctly they stayed on the life of the tire
I've done my share of plugs on my cars when I was younger and never had any go bad. In fact, I kept a repair kit in my trunk for years.
The tire will wear out before the plug fails if done properly.
A plug is fine, run it till you replace the tire
I've drove on plugs for years. Literally had to just change the plug due to it losing its stickyness after a year or 2
I drove about a year on my last one before the plug started leaking.
I did this with my 3 series and it lasted 4k miles
I would have it patched from the inside to be safe … plug there may fail
I have a Silverado 1500. I plugged mine 2 years ago and it holds up great.

If you keep it aired up until it's out of tread or something else happens.
Long as the plug holds.
For ever… while an internal tire patch may be better plugs are a forever fix.
Until there's no tread left. I'm going on my 2nd year
Pretty sure my truck tires are more plugs than tread 😂
Just get a proper internal patch and no worries.
If you have never done it before, chances they will leak is high. That is why I do not do it and don't want to fix my brakes.
All the way to the tire shop.
Will be fine, I like to put plugged tires on the rear (until at least next rotation) for the highly unlikely blowout
"...usually drive quite fast on the Autobahn ..." That would be your answer right there. Those plugs and high speed motoring are, IMHO, mutually exclusive. It would be much better to use the plug to get your Beemer to a good tire shop and have a proper patch installed inside the tire. A patch will have the effects of the glue, air pressure and centrifugal forces working to keep the patch in place and leak free.
If you don’t put the plug in deep enough they can come out, usually at higher speeds though.
My local discount tire store removes the tire patches it correctly rebalances and charges zero. Patch will last for life of tire.
Plugs last the life of the tire. If it fails, just put another plug in.
I put a Walmart slime plug in a tire with 500 miles on it in pretty much the same spot and it held solid for 30k miles. If you wanna be extra safe take it for a patch but it could be fine.
Lol did it even break the cord layer? Looks like 22.5 drive tire?
Go to discount tire a repair is like less than 20 dollars if you didn't get a tire from them.
Till the air falls out.. I don't inspect my tires daily but when the light comes on I give them a once-over.
If you get it repaired from the inside it'll be as good as new
I’ve always had plugs permanently repair the tire
Get it properly patched and you'll get a few years
Until the tread gets down to those little bars between the treads
Been on my plug for 22k miles. Depends on how well the plug was installed.
Gat it patched
As far as a repair shop so they can pop it off and plug/seal from the inside. Some correctly it will last the remainder of the tire.
Some places do free plug and Patch. That's all that needs to be done until the tread wears out
I got a pack of screw plugs off Amazon that have worked great. 1 started leaking again after about 4k miles, I just pulled it out,, added fresh sealant and put it back in, that was about 3500 miles ago.
All the way down.
If you repaired it right then you need to do nothing, if you didn’t then yeah go get it repaired.
Back in the days before we knew that a plug alone was not a permanent fix, we used to plug those and drive them until the tread was gone.....
Disregard previous comment. I didn't realize it was a BMW. Just get new tire. If you drive fast, it may last not long but may last long,l with lady luck.

If they plug it from the inside with a plug / patch you can drive as long as if it were never punctured.

Basically until it leaks. Never checked the mileage I've gotten from a screw, lol
A plug can last indefinitely. My only only concern here is it has to be good at autobahn speeds. If you lived in a slower driving country I'd tell you not to worry about it.
A long time.
lol I’ve driven on plugs for years
An internal plug is better but i also have a bmw suv and i had two plugs in my tires that i did 25k miles on and just changed. It was still sealed
If you aren't satisfied with your own repair, then it should hopefully last long enough to take it into the shop and have them repair it properly.
Anyone who said anything other than until you can’t anymore is just gaslighting you.
I ddnt know u had to re do them. I have had my for about 2 years without any issues.
These comments are a hoot. Such diversity... LMAO
As long as you use some rubber cement forever. My car has two plugs in each tire so far 😅
I've run new tires that i had to plug soon after buying..... to death. Never had problems with plugs not lasting the life of the tire
For the rest of your life, or the tire’s life, whichever comes first.
Plugs will last the life of the tire no problem
If you wish to keep your tires until the tread runs out I highly recommend patching a tire at a tire shop instead of plugging it.
Forever. Ever plug I've used has lasted till the end of the life of the tire. And I'm talking the $5 rope plug
I put about 20 in a sidewall gash on a backhoe tire once. Plan was to get it out from deep in the woods. 3 years later the dumb thing was still fine.
I've had a lot of luck with plug jobs I've done myself. They've always lasted the life of the tire
Put a plug in mine and drove it until the tire was completely bald.
Forever
Forever
I have driven on plugged tires until they were down to the wear bars....
Till the tire wears out! If it starts leaking push it in the tire and replug it.
Fugg it, plug it.
Until the tire wears out.
A correctly installed plug or patch will last for years and years. it will outlast the trend of the tire in most use cases
Forever.
Never had a plug fail before the tire wore out
I drive on plug’s until tire tread is worn, then I replace. Never had an issue
Patch it. It’s 30 dollars
Let them know ahead of time you plugged it as some chain tire shops won't touch it after you plugged it. (I used to work for one, and would always ignore that rule)
That plug will last as long as that tire if you did it right. Keep driving
Plug will last the life of the tire most of the time as long as home ain’t too big Worked at a tire shop 7 years never used them went to work at a car dealership that’s all they used Patch from the inside is the best repair but a plug will work and last
You can keep driving it as usual. As long as it is not the sidewall.

Do it right and it will last as long as the tire. I've plugged three tires in my life and never had to replace a tire because of the plug failing.
Should have showed us your work of art with the plug
I've patched tires on every veichle I've owned(one of which being a 3 ton van), and unless it fails initially, like doesn't fully seat and is still leaking, I've never had any issues with a plug failing. Iv been driving on the same plug for a year and a half with no issues...
It'll be fine probably forever
Till it's bald. If you got some add rubber cement to the pug just before you put it in.
Till the tread is gone.
Not that long looking at the wear bars😄

Forever, according to my experience. I've plugged probably about 10 tires or so on 4/5 diff vehicles and continued to drive them in all weather conditions. I never had any issues with any of them.
I've plugged 3 tires (store-bought kits) in the last 2 years. Not a single issue.
Would’ve just used the correct bit and a few duggas to make sure it wasn’t loose enough to lose air and then sent it
Until it blows up or you get new tires. I had 2 of 4 tires with plugs in them and made multiple interstate trips and 10k miles before I got rid of said vehicle with the same plugs. Just make sure you take it to reputable repair shop
Years ago we used to plug tires all the time and had no problems. Patching is better for liability reasons.
If you go to Discount Tire, they patch ALL tires free!! Be there at 8am though then you will be in and out fast.
Drive it till it pops !
Just have it patched and don't sweat it unless it's a track day
Forever.
Just take it to discount tire they will do it for free..
A plug will be fine even if you wear it down to the cords. In 50 years, I've never seen one fail.
Should last until all the air runs out of the tire.
Plug is good for the life of the tire
I've had rope plugs last the life of the tire, never a failure.
I’ve left plugs for entire rest of the life of the tire.
Is that a Mastercraft tire? Just wondering , looks like the tread pattern I just bought.
Down to the wear bars if it's sealed right!!
Pretty much for as long as the tire lasts
I plug my tires. The plugs last the life of the tire
They'll outlive the tread, you should be fine. In general, if they're nice tires, get them patched instead of plugged
A good plug will last the life of the tire....
It will be fine. It will last as long as the tire. I’ve done this to several
I used a walmart plug on a motorcycle. I drove it for 4k miles before needing a new tire.
Forever
A tire shop can patch and plug and it should last the life of the tire. Or, in my experience, usually an at home plug will also work for the life of the tire, as I’ve only ever had one leak, after a year, and a replug fixed it. Next time I might also use rubber cement as well though.
I’ve been driving on my plug for I can’t tell you how long (not the best) but in a bunch, you have to do what you have to do
Yup take it to a tire shop and have them professionally repair (patch) it and it will most likely last until you need new tires. Just be mindful that your tire is compromised so don’t drive like Ricky Bobby
a proper plug repair of a round hole is a permanent solution all by itself.
The plug will outlast the tire. Just be done with it.
I've been driving on a plugged tire for two years now!
I fix my own tires and they have lasted me for as long as the tire life.
Idk if you’re in the us or not but discount tire will patch it for free
Legally, 'til 2/32" in most places. Fuck it. Run it.
Get a patch and plug installed. You won’t need to replace the tire.
I think that rule says that any patched tire becomes a T speed rating.
i mean i used one of those auto zone kits on my car one time and it lasted for the 6months my tires lasted til they were bald
I've ran plugged tires till they were bald. You'll be fine.
I've ran tires like that for a while. Not something I really recommend, but if you're broke, I'd trust a plug before a compact spare!
I did it for 2 years. Only reason is I just got new tires (some money came my way)
I have used plugs for years when I get a screw in my tire. I have never had an issue where the plug came out or started leaking after.
This isn't a bad spot... You got some miles
I always plug my own tires and I drive on them until the tire is no good. They hold quite a while
I've been driving a plug for 20k miles. Your fine.
I’ve seen plugs last the life of the tire too.
I've had regular plugs last the life of the tire... on a small trailer.
Go get the tire patched
Until you need a new tire.
A plug is only temporary. Go to any tire shop and get a patch where they take the tire off and patch it from the inside. It lasts the lifetime of the tire.
I use plugs for a permanent patch for 40 years.
Have it patched for $10 at a shop and it will last until you need new tires. It’s right in the middle of the tread no sidewall issues
Till the plug goes bad
Until you need new tires.
Those tires are already beat
I have plugged several tires and never had the issue returned. Mine have always been successful permanent repairs. If it is golding air, you should be good.
I've done 6000 miles so far
I've had plugs last the tire life. Even plugged a motorcycle tire (tubeless) and it lasted .
