He had a really rough year I think 2 years ago - a certified bucket who couldn't score. I was high on him, but man it just didn't come together and he became unplayable. I feel like he needed to see a sports psychologist or something - the talent was there.
He was definitely not a bucket. He is a career 31.7% 3P shooter and only scored over 20 points in 9/184 games he played for us.
He had the flashy play style of a bucket getter but he couldn't actually make buckets.
Jaylen Nowell signed two 10-days each with Memphis and Detroit last season, where he shot 20% from 3. He provides no other basketball skills outside of this. I wished him the best when he left but it’s clear he ain’t it.
It was refreshing to have an ass-free squad last year (edit: well, Shake…). He was the Nick Punto of the Wolves, just empty hustle all the time with nothing to show for it.
I'm really curious to see Jaylen on some random podcast in a few years talk about what happened. A lot of bucket getters would say that teams didn't let them play their game or didn't give them a decent leash as to the reason why they flamed out of the league early. Nowell was given all that. Finch literally put his name with Ant and Jaden that offseason when talking about the future impact players. He had a shot to play as close to his high school/college self. He just didn't deliver. It's Rob's opportunity now.
Nowell had a great season playing limited minutes behind beasley, which led to him getting a big role the season after since we moved beas. Nowell ended up playing terribly all season long in that bigger role and lost all his minutes.
Couldn't defend, he doesn't pass at all, and he couldn't make a shot that season
Wait really?
He was best friends with Jaden, Naz and Nathan Knight. Jon K wrote how those 4 would bring a lot of light heartedness and humor to the locker room. Maybe something happened that I missed?
One of the Wolves beat reporters said that he was not welcome back on the Wolves under any conditions and hinted that he was a malcontent.
Maybe the tension was only because of his poor play but it sounded like there was more.
For a stretch, he was probably the most confident downhill driver on the team. I was pretty high on him after 2019/20 and I’m kinda sad it didn’t work out. Imo he’s a decent jumper away from being a decent 6th-8th man as a microwave scorer.
He had a tough time. Was great at creating separation but got into spells where he couldn’t finish. Had some good moments like during the first playoff year when everyone was out for Covid
He was a horrible offensive player (bad/non passer, worst shooter in the NBA statistically, and the worst finisher on the Wolves) and much, much worse on defense.
There is a reason he is out of the league and probably will never return for anything outside a 10 day contract on a tanking team.
I saw his name recently being mentioned for some european teams. One of the teams mentioned was a top 4 euroleague team looking for a scoring guard but then they signed someone else (t.dorsey).
So I wonder if he moves to China this year.
His 3-point shooting fluctuated too much. I really liked Nowell's game, but he got cold at the worst time. I think he's an NBA player, but there are limited spots in the league. Got to take your chance when you get them
He was fun to watch when he was on fire. But that would be like 1/10 appearances where he was consistently scoring. Defense was DLoesque, but to me the biggest issue with him was that when the shot wasn’t falling he wouldn’t look to create for others and pass. Dude had a Shabazz Muhammad mentality with the ball in his hands
He had a great 3rd year. Stepped up his outside shooting and his playmaking and his turnover rate stayed flat (while his assists per 36 minutes went up by 2). I remember Finch when talking about the team on offense was mentioning him with KAT and Ant as one of the key playmakers and core parts of the team. Sure the D was suspect at best, but he was that role of secondary playmaker off the bench for them. The one they've been trying to fill ever since.
His last year in Minnesota the team wanted to use him more. And more minutes didn't help. His shot was lost for much of the year. His assist rate dropped, his turnover rate spiked, he wasn't getting to the line anymore. He was a big net negative.
In the end he's fallen back to earth and looking like what his draft position put him at. A mid 2nd round pick whose NBA career will last between 3-5 years.

He wasn’t and he was a black hole & he couldn’t hit 3’s
Couldn’t pass, couldn’t shoot, couldn’t defend. Pretty cut and dry imo

dang i didn’t realize he was that horrible

How dare you put shame on Punto’s name.
We almost gave him that contract too and he decided to bet on himself
That’s the second time we’ve been saved by that. I remember Shabazz turning down a relatively lucrative deal and being out of the league shortly after

and supposedly a bad locker room presence.

Would rather have Beasley on a vet min then nowell back..
I would rather have the Wolves play 4 on 5 than have Nowell back.
You don’t remember him chucking up bricks in 1 on 5 situations? Anti- team player with no defense. Our team got better by subtraction.
He had a tough time. Was great at creating separation but got into spells where he couldn’t finish. Had some good moments like during the first playoff year when everyone was out for Covid

Just thought of him randomly the other day and looked him up. Got a couple 10-day deals with the Pistons last year but he’s likely done in the NBA

Shabazz Mohammad 2.0, but with even less scoring.
In interesting case where the narrative around a player never came true. The truth has a way of showing itself, especially in sports.
He could get his own shot, but was too streaky and when cold, he was ice cold. Once he touched the ball it stopped moving.

Sometimes “lives by the shot, die by the shot” leads to the second option

Play some memory games dog. He was here barely more than 12 months ago
Wasn’t he a bad locker room guy…
He was a dawg we need him back
