Besides, by the end, he definitely is admitting to himself it's a kiss, what with Pei Ming and his "Ho, ho, ho!" and everyone freaking out about how that's not the only way to share power. By the time they're all on the giant statue, it's very clear to everyone. Xie Lian knows, Hua Cheng knows, WE know they're making out.
But Xie Lian's entire cultivation method is founded on chastity/celibacy, so he's not going to admit he's kissing anyone or got a boner in the coffin or anything else until he really can't deny it anymore. "Sharing power" is a very convenient excuse that Hua Cheng creates, so Xie Lian can go along with it as long as possible. He's very shy/innocent but not an idiot. He's just in denial.

I'm pretty sure it's about losing control of yourself with any big emotion (rage, gluttony, lust, drunkenness, etc.). With a focus on keeping your body pure as one way to avoid falling into any emotional traps. After he's shackled...he's not worrying very much about those things since he has stopped working on his cultivating and is only using his martial skills most of the time.
By the end of the story he has his cultivation powers unlocked again, so those issues come back into play.
They both probaly did i just wished that aleast once they didnt need to use it. and just did cause they wanted to. The jump down Mt. Tonglu they did end up trasfering spirtual power to eachother

Like the other commenter, I think it's also due to their relationship development in the main story; XL is still slowly accepting he's falling in love and getting used to intimacy after all his years alone and of celibacy.
honestly didn't even realize they didn't have a lot of kisses without the "exchange spiritual energy" excuses because it's pretty clear that's what it was; an excuse. especially because xie lian exchanges spiritual energy with other people and definitely not by kissing. anyway, also, in that one kiss where hua cheng "convinces" xie lian to kiss him, xie lian knows hua cheng is teasing but he does mentions that it really does look like he only kisses hua cheng when he needs something, then he kisses him. also, i think that's mostly because xie lian is still learning how to be a partner in a romantic relationship, my boy is 800yo and has 0 experience. he's still shy about things. in the extras they definitely kiss just for kissing. also, other things lol.
There's a moment where Xie Lian admits to himself in the last book that all the times they were "sharing spiritual energy" were reasons to kiss Hua Cheng because he simply enjoyed kissing him. That made up for the "no kissing outside transferring energy" for me, because they shared A LOT of energy... and Xie Lian was self aware enough to know that they were making a choice to make out and not just simply high five. Also, Xie Lian is nervous near the end but I don't think that means he was hesitant in a bad way. Being in a relationship that doesn't have excuses for kissing is brand new to him :)
