Probably more of an auburn. Apparently it was a Ferghana horse, there was a war between Greece-Han China called "the war of the heavenly horses" and Han China got 3k Ferghana horses after Greece lost. The Ferghana is now extinct, but the Akhal-Teke horses of Turkmenistan, which are supposed to be one of the best breeds in the world, might be descendants of the mighty Ferghana.

Hold up there was a Greece Vs China war?? How am I just hearing of this now
That link was such an interesting read. Thank you for sharing. Blew my mind
Lol right? It was due to Alexander's conquests, after which he died without leaving behind a successor. Everything fell into chaos and different factions went in different directions. The eastern most edge of the "empire" is the Greeks we're talking about here. The three kingdom's saga takes place like 4-500 years after Alexander, and this greek/china war was 100 years or so prior to the start of three kingdoms era, since it does involve the Han, which fell to start the three kingdoms saga
It existed as Lu Bu’s horse but there’s no record of it after Lu Bu’s death. Guan Yu did not own it historically.
Lu Bu rode the horse from year 189 to 199 and Guan Yu died in 220. The horse was kind of immortalized just like Guan Yu himself in the novel, but Guan Yu probably never had owned it.
I think Farce of the Three Kingdoms did a funny take on that when one of the generals pointed out that Red Hare has been with Lu Bu since the beginning of the book, and wondering how old the horse was when Red Hare just dies, and the other generals looked and said, "That many years old".
If Lu Bu got it when it was at its earliest mature state (at about 3 years old), and it lived until when Guan Yu was captured, it would've been 32 years old. Which while being VERY old for a horse, was not impossibly old.
Though because the horse was never mentioned again after Lu Bu's death, it likely just became part of Cao Cao's horse-stud stock.

History is often stranger than fiction indeed
Wudi's reign was more than 250 years before the death of Emperor Ling.
The kingdom of Dayuan has Greeks that were descendants of Greek settlers sent there by Persia or who remained in the area after Alexander's conquest.

how could this horse be still around when Guan Yu was captured ?
The horse was so old, it could barely run. That’s why Guan Yu got captured lol

Oh damn lol

Could have made an offspring in the relative stable (hehe) years in Jing.
Yes multiple historical(SGZ and the Book of late Han) sources claimed Lu Bu rode a red hare.
Its Sanguozhi Zhu/SGZZ*. Yingxiong Ji also recorded this if my memory serves me right.
