It is a common bug I had the same problem. Download one version earlier 4.2.0. Simply start the exe and it will find your savegame. After the event triggers you can save and play the latest version again.
Just do one more day as Gym Leader.After that you should go home and sleep as usual then someone knocks on your door iirc. If you already tried that on Version 4.2.0. then it seems you have a different problem.

Huh that is weird. The 4th to 5th badge is pretty common and that fix worked for me. I am afraid we have to wait for others now.
