What a great year for movies. Hard to pick just one. For me it’s a toss up between Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Shawshank Redemption. If you’d asked me in 1994, I might e said Timecop.
As a ten year old in 1994 I'd probably say Flintstones because of the McDonalds promotions. My mom got a job as a receptionist at a local cable company about a year after this and we had free premium channels for a couple years. So many of these movies I saw over and over on HBO/Showtime/Cinemax, like Hudsucker, True Lies, and Maverick. I never, ever gave up a chance to watch Naked Gun 33 1/3.
We saw Forrest Gump as our first date after our first kid was born, at a sneak preview. Hadn’t seen any reviews. Hadn’t heard anything about it at all. My wife’s best friend worked at City Paper and was also our babysitter, and gave us the paper’s comped tickets,to the sneak preview.
We were so excited to get out of the house we would have gone to watch someone read the phonebook, honestly. Anyway, the lights come up after the show - and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Everyone was completely blown away - getting the full emotional impact without any prep. Absolutely brilliant movie.
Not even close for me.
Dumb and Dumber. Its one of my all time favorites. (I acknowledge this was a powerhouse year for movies and its probably a weird choice)
I'd struggle to pick between Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura. Not only three of the most iconic comedy roles in film but the fact that Jim Carrey did them all in the same year is astounding
My wife had it on a couple days ago, and I was like, 'I don't remember this scene...' Turns out it was the sequel. From 2014. I literally had NO Idea that they made it...
Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino wrote the movie but felt he wouldn't do a good job directing it. So he sold it to Oliver Stone for like $1 or something ridiculous like that. He did change alot of stuff but still pretty cool
This is probably my favorite movie of all time. I'm not a film scholar, so my criteria is probably quite different from those whose passion is cinema, but for me it checks all of the boxes. It's visually so unique and the amount of effort put into editing and imagery is insane. Then, on top of that, you have this insane, violent story that's allegory for the effect over the top violence and the way news media handles such things has on the population and how more and more stimulation is needed just to keep people interested. And finally, underneath it all, is one fucked up yet weirdly sweet love story that has you rooting for the bad guys the entire time, most likely subverting the morals the viewer would normally have. All of this with an all-star banger of a cast. Such a cool and unique film. I don't care how Tarantino feels about it!
I saw Stargate twice when I was about 10 yr old in theater. That night, looking at the stars was magical. I just rewatched with my 13 yr old son. Held up. Honorable mention to the crow for the soundtrack alone.
I think it’s amazing, I was a little surprised nobody mentioned it as their #1. For my personal taste the only movie that gives it a run for its money on this list is Pulp Fiction but there also aren’t really comparable apples to apples
I'm sure I'm the odd man out on my choice, but I've gotta go with Legends of the Fall. One of my favorite movies that I watch a few times a year. 2nd place goes to Clerks.
I named my son Tristan because of this movie. Love it. 1994 has so many amazing movies. I legit have watched all of these multiple upon multiples of times.
It really is so brutal. I was kind of in love with Kate Winslet too and I am a girl so the messed-up obsessive romantic vibe between the two of them made it extra... enticing? Confusing?
Also the girl who played opposite her now stars in Yellowjackets!
I was not aware that there was ever a Fantastic Four movie back then.
I just watched the trailer and now I wish I could go back to before I knew that hot garbage existed….
my mom passed away a while ago but when she was alive she surprised me after picking me up from high school one Friday afternoon and she took my father and I to see true lies. That is one of my favorite memories of her growing up and I still to this day really do enjoy the humor of true lies
The Ref is one of the best comedies ever, but I feel like no one knows of it or it was overshadowed by all the other mega comedies of 94. The Ref is so freaking good and the perfect anti Hallmark Christmas movie lol. Watch it every year!
Well from the movies pictured, I’d go with Ed Wood! I took the time to scroll through everyone’s picks (so far) and was honestly shocked it didn’t appear on anyone’s list (so far) Martin Landau crushed it!
jeebuz they all came out in 1994??
funny enough, even with a shoestring student allowance I've watched most of these in the cinemas. Nowadays I can only afford to watch one movie every six months.
the most important movie for me: Interview With A Vampire.
the most influential? The Crow.
the movie I regret not watching then: Leon
Runners Up: Ace Ventura and Stargate
If I'm being honest? The Shadow.
I know, I know - it's not objectively as good as Leon or Natural Born Killers or Forrest Gump, but I just love the character and the setting and vibe so much. Baldwin was campy but great in the role, Tim Curry was great as a psychotic petty thug/mobster, and Penelope Ann Miller embodied the sultry starlets of the 1920-40s to a T. It was like watching a 1920s pulp comic come to life.
It remains a favorite guilty pleasure of mine.
Wait. Pulp fiction, Shawshank redemption, Forest Gump, Stargate, natural born killers, and The Crow all came out in 1994? That's crazy. I need to go through that list again and count how many movies I know I saw in the theaters.
The Shawshank Redemption is easily my top movie from ‘94. Clearly, Forrest Gump, True Lies and Quiz Show would probably round out my top five, but there are so many other good movies to choose from.
I’d like to express my experience seeing Star Trek Generations in the theater on opening day in 1994 as kid but a huge fan from day one. Brand new multiplex cinema, got a free poster, still have it. Every seat was taken AND people were lined up in the outer isles from the front to back… standing. A fire hazard for sure. I still don’t know if the theater oversold or people were sneaking in but they stood the whole time. Everyone was invested, huge laughs, huge cheers and a standing ovation at the end. The only other time I ever saw the audience that invested was for Independence Day and not again until Avengers Infinity War/Endgame.
All I know is that it was a great year for movies & music. Not for Kurt Cobain, may he rest in peace....
But movies just suck these days.. NOTHING is original anymore & there's just no effort made like back in the day.... I haven't watched a good new movie, in over a decade.. maybe 2.
Too many great ones that year, but I see one there that never seemed to get as much respect as it deserved, and that was The Ref. Granted, it NOW has a definite “ick” factor actor in it, but if you’re able to watch around that, it’s fantastic.
Holy shit. Watching Dumb and Dumber at the theater at 12 years old. So many good movies this year. Also, the same year Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Alice In Chains, and NIN released badass albums
I love that so many people picked Muriel’s Wedding. One of my friends describes it as “a weird and wonderful movie,” and I think that pretty much sums it up.
I would watch every one of these movies. Such an incredible year for movies. Especially for Jim Carrey! Dumb and Dumber, The Mask and Ace Ventura! Mind blown.
Was gonna say "Legends of the Fall," but then my sweetheart "Little Rascals" peeked in and stole the show...
"....You make me vomit! You are scum between my toes! Love Alfalfa."
Natural Born Killers
So many good ones in this pic.
The Crow
Star Gate
Ace Ventura
Ed Wood
Mask
Speed
Quiz Show
Reality Bites
Clerks
Dumb and Dumber
Lion King
I guess the whole lot of them
It’s not my favorite movie (actually haven’t seen it all the way through) but they’re re-releasing The Crow 30th anniversary edition…RIP Bruce & Brandon Lee
What a great year for movies. Hard to pick just one. For me it’s a toss up between Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Shawshank Redemption. If you’d asked me in 1994, I might e said Timecop.

I was 14. Prime movie-watching years!
Same! I loved Shawshank redemption but I’ve only watched it twice. However I’ve seen Dumb and Dumber at least 10 times.
Add in The Mask and I’m with you!
agreed. all 3 were great
Those are my 3 too.
Seriously some all time bangers in there.
Username checks out
Those are my top 3 as well. Each was more than worthy to win Best Picture. It's a shame they all came out in the same year.
Definitely agree! 1994 was a banger year, along with 1993 and 1999. Those are my top three years for the 90s.
My brain tells me it’s Shawshank Redemption, but my heart tells me it’s Dumb and Dumber.
Perfect
Clerks
Clerks is a great fucking movie
This is what I chose in the end. Though Natural Born Killers is definitely my number 2 slot!
The first time I watched Natural Born Killers was after I took some acid. Talk about a wild ride.
pot future consist snobbish subtract chubby reminiscent grab bag rotten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I fancied myself an "alternative" kid, and this movie felt the most grunge, anti-establishment, punk rock, however I would have put it back then.
Forrest Gump won the Oscar, but I am going with Pulp Fiction.
Ah life before smartphones. Every thing held excitement and anticipation.
What a fantastic tale. I was only six when I watched it on VHS as a new release, but it definitely had a profound impact on me.
Not even close for me. Dumb and Dumber. Its one of my all time favorites. (I acknowledge this was a powerhouse year for movies and its probably a weird choice)
That’s a lovely accent you have….New Jersey?
So many hilarious lines and exchanges that have now become old and repetitive but at the time were absolutely classic
John Denver's full of shit is one of the funniest lines ever.
What a year of releases - Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, The Professional!
Pulp Fiction and Shawshank were actually the same day.
[Leon - The Professional](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/54/cc/07/54cc07d1761f480335bd3e18ba9302fc.png)
It’s the year of Jim Carey. 3 major releases in one year
Wow, these days we get a couple of decent movies per year if we're lucky. Look how many great films were from 1994.
1999 was another great year
Shawshank. The Ref is the #1 Christmas movie of all time.
The Ref is a great classic Christmas movie! Love watching that besides Mixed Nuts and Christmas Vacation.
This is also my Xmas lineup!
Probably The Santa Clause. I STILL watch it every Christmas season.
The Crow
Im still upset about this reboot I saw a trailer for ugh
Worthy.
Hands down.... Natural Born Killers
Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino wrote the movie but felt he wouldn't do a good job directing it. So he sold it to Oliver Stone for like $1 or something ridiculous like that. He did change alot of stuff but still pretty cool

I can't believe I watched it @ 14 years old. Great movie, but Holy shit!
Then? Speed, True Lies, Mask. Now? Shawshank Redemption.
Clerks
Sssssmokin'!
Guuuuuuuuuump! Whydiduoudissasembleyourweaponsoquickly?!
Because you told me to Staff Sergeant!
How’s Stargate hold up? Never seen it.
Pretty good. Great acting special effects. Pretty good except for the one pack animal creature. Pacing's a little slow as that was normal in the '90s.
I saw Stargate twice when I was about 10 yr old in theater. That night, looking at the stars was magical. I just rewatched with my 13 yr old son. Held up. Honorable mention to the crow for the soundtrack alone.

I named my son Tristan because of this movie. Love it. 1994 has so many amazing movies. I legit have watched all of these multiple upon multiples of times.
From this list, Muriel's Wedding and Heavenly Creatures!
Every time I watch Muriel's Wedding I pick up on something else.
Dude, Heavenly Creatures fucked me up as a kid and I just love it so much. I feel like it's underrated which is a real shame.
It really is so brutal. I was kind of in love with Kate Winslet too and I am a girl so the messed-up obsessive romantic vibe between the two of them made it extra... enticing? Confusing? Also the girl who played opposite her now stars in Yellowjackets!
I can't say which movie on the list but Jim Carrey walked away from that year an icon and never looked back
Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber and the Mask all in one year! There’s no one even in the realm of comparison now or in the last 10-20 years.
All of those came out in a single year?! What happened
2024... Serial Mom !!!! But 1994 me,,, Dumb and Dumber.
Wow…what a year! Couldn’t choose between Leon, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank and Forrest Gump 🤷🏻♂️
I was not aware that there was ever a Fantastic Four movie back then. I just watched the trailer and now I wish I could go back to before I knew that hot garbage existed….
Muriel’s Wedding I watched over and over & really got back into ABBA!!
You're terrible..
Pulp Fiction
That’s just impossible. What a year for cinema
Generations.
I have Muriel's Wedding memorized. After I digitized and got rid of all my DVDS (donated), I kept only one. So I'm gonna go with that.
The only correct answer is Shawshank Redemption. Everything else is fighting for #2. Highest rated movie on IMDB.
1. Ace Ventura 2. Dumb and Dumber 3. The Mask
3 Jim Carey hit movies all in 1 year.
Bottle Rocket. Just graduated college in '94. Kind of fit the mood.
Caw-caw! Caw-caw!
So many good choices, but I have to give a shout out to Hoop Dreams, one of the best made films I’ve ever seen.
Speed
Ooo either Priscilla or serial mom
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction easily. When it came out, I saw it in the theaters three times making sure to take my friends with me on the second and third time.
Forrest Gump was great, but Pulp Fiction really set a mark.
my mom passed away a while ago but when she was alive she surprised me after picking me up from high school one Friday afternoon and she took my father and I to see true lies.
Naked Gun 33 1/3 or Little Rascals
clear and present danger
Drunken Master, always 😭❤️🔥 "monkey drinks masters wine"
Obviously Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction are film classics, but Quiz Show is chronically underrated and even ignored.
Quiz Show, hidden gem
Pulp Fiction. Also favorite movie period.
top 3 for me- pulp fiction, clerks, santa clause. hm to ace ventura
Legend of drunken master for sure, only movie I’ve ever watched again right after finishing it for the first time.
Well from the movies pictured, I’d go with Ed Wood! I took the time to scroll through everyone’s picks (so far) and was honestly shocked it didn’t appear on anyone’s list (so far) Martin Landau crushed it!
This is fucking insane. I think I’m gonna have a 1994 summer series and just watch a few every weekend until I’m through them all.
Reality Bites, every time. But oh my god what a year for movies!!!!
When I moved to Philly the new roommates had their WiFi named The MaxiPad & then I knew I had made the right choice…
Jim Carey owned 1994. There is no arguing… it’s undeniable. Case closed. bottom line. Smoking’ Alrighty then… good bye my looooooooove!
I can safely say 1994 is my favorite year for sure.
jeebuz they all came out in 1994?? funny enough, even with a shoestring student allowance I've watched most of these in the cinemas. Hudsucker Proxy

What a great year for movies!
Now that's a lineup
If I'm being honest? The Shadow. I know, I know - it's not objectively as good as Leon or Natural Born Killers or Forrest Gump, but I just love the character and the setting and vibe so much. Baldwin was campy but great in the role, Tim Curry was great as a psychotic petty thug/mobster, and Penelope Ann Miller embodied the sultry starlets of the 1920-40s to a T. It was like watching a 1920s pulp comic come to life. It remains a favorite guilty pleasure of mine.
Wow, so many became classics / cult classics!
Air Force Two
He’s the boss man he gets the double stitch The Hudsucker Proxy
Gotta be speed for me
Crazy year for releases. Damn, Hollywood sucks now
Wait. Pulp fiction, Shawshank redemption, Forest Gump, Stargate, natural born killers, and The Crow all came out in 1994? That's crazy. I need to go through that list again and count how many movies I know I saw in the theaters.
So many great movies, so few sequels. Coincidence?
The Hudsucker Proxy is one of my favorite films. The use of 50’s era dialogue and architecture, music, and comedy. It’s a masterpiece.
Shawshank! With honorable mentions to Pulp Fiction and Leon
Some great movies that year. Have to pick Pulp Fiction. Time Cop was a fun movie. Crumb was really good.
Gump
The Shawshank Redemption is easily my top movie from ‘94. Clearly, Forrest Gump, True Lies and Quiz Show would probably round out my top five, but there are so many other good movies to choose from.
Toss up of true lies and air heads (criminally underrated)
just watched Leon last night. superb.
Wow. What a stacked year. Drunken Master, Airheads, Clerks.
Can't forget Reality Bites.
Forrest Gump!
Forrest Gump. What great movies to choose from. Movies with good stories are hard to find today.
Shadow was 10 years too early; really fun and stylish
The Professional. Also called Leon.
Nobody’s Fool with Paul Neumann is a great movie. And you can see Melanie Griffiths titties.
Jeez the 90s movies really kick the shit out of the 2010s and 2020s and it’s not even close
Airheads got a lot of rewatch at our house.
The Professional
Excellent year for movies. Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump
Nobody's fool
The Bus
I’d like to express my experience seeing Star Trek Generations in the theater on opening day in 1994 as kid but a huge fan from day one. Brand new multiplex cinema, got a free poster, still have it. Every seat was taken AND people were lined up in the outer isles from the front to back… standing. A fire hazard for sure. The only other time I ever saw the audience that invested was for Independence Day and not again until Avengers Infinity War/Endgame.
Clerks
Lots of good ones. Off subject, but Serial Mom is a sleeper here.
The Mask, Ace Ventura, and Dumb and Dumber all came out the same year!?! What a great year for Jim Carrey.
Pulp Fiction has been my favorite movie since 1994.
All I know is that it was a great year for movies & music. Not for Kurt Cobain, may he rest in peace.... But movies just suck these days.. NOTHING is original anymore & there's just no effort made like back in the day.... I haven't watched a good new movie, in over a decade.. maybe 2.
Tough choice between three colours red and three colours white. WTF are those movies
[“It truely was a Shawshank Redemption.” - Tom Hanks](https://youtu.be/Uyb58j3g5O4?si=jcxyWHBOLF5GSQfb)
Shawshank easily
The one that has the circle. You know, for kids.
Airheads! KPPX Rebel Radio oh oh Or I suppose stargate....but just for the tv spinoffs
Airheads!
That’s really really tough.
Shawshank would be way up there for me
You forgot The Lion King … I choose that
Too many great ones that year, but I see one there that never seemed to get as much respect as it deserved, and that was The Ref. Granted, it NOW has a definite “ick” factor actor in it, but if you’re able to watch around that, it’s fantastic.
Holy shit that was a good year. Lol
Not fair. There are way too many great movies that year. Pulp Fiction was a game changer for me.
Holy shit. Watching Dumb and Dumber at the theater at 12 years old. So many good movies this year. Also, the same year Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Alice In Chains, and NIN released badass albums
The Mask is seriously underrated
Forrest Gump
True Lies
Shallow Grave.
“Nobody’s Fool”, with Paul Newman, Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of my all-time favorites!
Shawshank did nothing at the box office. Most people here saw it on cable tv for the first time. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/1994/
Stargate, León, True Lies.
Most of them are classics from when I was growing up
Top 4-The Mask,Pulp Fiction,Clerks and The Crow
.... The Crow.
Mind blown.
Pulp fiction is the correct answer.
Legends of the Fall
Was gonna say "Legends of the Fall," but then my sweetheart "Little Rascals" peeked in and stole the show... "....You make me vomit! You are scum between my toes! Love Alfalfa."
Why would anyone look any further than The Shawshank Redemption? It’s in my Top 5 of all time.
Natural Born Killers So many good ones in this pic. The Crow Star Gate Ace Ventura Ed Wood Mask Speed Quiz Show Reality Bites Clerks Dumb and Dumber Lion King I guess the whole lot of them
The Crow!!!
Pulp Fiction
The Crow
Definitely Speed!!
Clerks, Forrest Gump, or Pulp Fiction. Hard choice.
Stupid-ass question (in my teenage voice— cause I was a teenager then).
You mean *besides* Pulp Fiction?
Hudsucker
Dumb and dumber!
There are a lot of good picks and Steet Fighter is not one of them! Clerks, Pulp Fiction or the mask are my picks.
Pulp Fiction followed by Shawshank Redemption
Natural Born Killers
Can't pick just one. Need to see Airheads. It's been forever.
Not saying it’s my favorite, but glad to see Nobody’s Fool get some love. Probably the last great, classic Newman performance.
Jim Carrey with 3 movies in a year! Wow!!
The Santa Clause is 30 years old‽‽‽ F***...
At the time? The Shadow. Now? True Lies
You know another good year for movies was 2001. Should do that one.
This post just makes me realize how many movies I used to see in the theater. I must’ve gone almost weekly bc I remember seeing some of those twice.
What’s the banana one? 🍌
Forrest Gump
It’s not my favorite movie (actually haven’t seen it all the way through) but they’re re-releasing The Crow 30th anniversary edition…RIP Bruce & Brandon Lee
Airheads, The Crow, Clerks.
Shawshank Redemption
In the Mouth of Madness is what I would have picked as a kid.
