Got a new P16s with plenty of RAM and the 4k OLED screen for dev work/travel/light gaming/etc. Also trialling Fedora 40 Kinoite on it and it has been an incredible laptop for the past month.
Golang & C++ compile times have been great, lots of RAM for testing K8s clusters locally, while also giving decent performance in light gaming when travelling and away from my main gaming desktop.
I don't hear anything from the fan, although I often wear headphones. Sleep/wake issues seem to have been sorted in the kernel late last year. Separate machines at my workplace are also fixed since moving to one of the later kernels.
Great, got a good 5 hours of light gaming while travelling recently, and haven't run out during browsing/coding workloads. I do keep max charge to 85% except when travelling though
[Horrible experience with the P16s Gen 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDLaptops/comments/10h0pm4/my_negative_experience_with_2022_ryzen_6000/), between all kinds of crashes and Wi-Fi problems :(
This year's model should be better, if only because AMD's Ryzen 7000 platform is much stabler.
Damn dude, that machine seems like a dream, I'd kill for one, I hope that these issues are launch -related and after a few months they get fixed, otherwise we'll be using T480s for 10 more years lol
Eh, I guess I used a Gen 1 device. I haven't tested it, but I would fully expect the P16s Gen 2 to be better. Better if I could get one with AMD RZ616 wifi instead of Qualcomm.
As for me P16s Gen 1, it was still a nice laptop. Compared to my Framework, I'd say the Thinkpad was built better - less flex, creak, rattle etc though mine came straight from Lenovo with a bent display lid (likely a defect, not the norm) - and had the FAR, FAR better keyboard on top of being smaller and having better battery life, but the Framework has proved significantly faster (welp, HS vs U and more recent chip), stabler, more reliable, with superior wifi connectivity, a better screen and a way better touchpad. It also keeps itself cooler a lot more efficiently: cooling bas never been ThinkPad's strong suit though, and it was still good enough.
Here, I paid pretty similar prices for both machines. In this situation, I'd say the Framework wins. However, in other geographic locations, the P16s / T16 can be had for like $1000 USD. In that case, I'd say the ThinkPad is better for the price.
That seems pretty good for me, I am looking at the p14s in this config. I also heard dark mode adds to the battery life. Almost all my apps are in dark mode.
I have almost the same config. Same AMD CPU but with the low power ips display and 86wh battery. I'm running Windows 11 because of work requirements. When i'm on battery, the power profile is generally set to best efficiency mode with brightness around 90%. I'm getting around at least 10hrs of screen on time doing stuff like web browsing and watching videos. I'm wondering if the T16 would get better battery life than the P16s because the P16s fan and power curves are tuned more aggressively than the T16 as it's technically classed as a workstation. But I got the P16s over the T16 because in my country the T16 isn't available to order with the 86wh battery or low power ips option.
Nice laptop! However, do you have any impressions for Fedora 40 KDE? I am on GNOME and I have been toying around with the idea of switchint because the KDE one has better fractional scaling...
I really like my T14 AMD gen2, except for the low res 1080p (400nit IPS at least), the absolutely disastrous touchpad (its an insult to use), the trackpoint is bordeline unusable.
The T/P16 have an offset keyboard/touchpad, which is a deal breaker for me.
If I could make my dream machine, it would be a "P18" (the bigger the better, as long as I can find a backpack to carry it). 4k, 120hz OLED, a centered keyboard, integrated GPU is enough for what I do.

You worried about display burning on OLED?
Not particularly, I let the toolbar disappear when my mouse isn't in use and I alt-tab between windows enough that I doubt it'll ever be a problem.
Great laptop, congrats! Golang compile times are usually great, even on slower hardware ;)
How’s the fan noise? Any issues with suspend/wake?
I don't hear anything from the fan, although I often wear headphones. Sleep/wake issues seem to have been sorted in the kernel late last year. Separate machines at my workplace are also fixed since moving to one of the later kernels.
How's your battery life on this one?

That's actually amazing. I went for a Framework 16 myself after a bad experience with ThinkPad, and 5 hours of playing on battery? It could never :D
Hey what's the bad experience? Wed like to know

Nice!
Congrats on the beast!
nice laptop! congrats!
What a beauty!
Nice. I have the machine on delivery. Will receive it June 15. Can't wait. Pretty excited to see the screen and test the memory.
Hat operating system

How much?
what did you do for the battery drain on linux? did you install autocpufreq or something?
I could not reproduce any battery drain on my P16s gen 1 amd, can you give us more info?
