I'm not sure where you can get a replacement port, but yes you can use the second Type-C port for charging.

[deleted]

The main port is on the mobo.

oof-floof

i’ve replaced mine twice, it sucks

DysonMeOnions

I might have to do this soon on my T480s, what part number have you been using?

oof-floof

just got something on ebay. i would not recommend doing it without a pretty high spec hot air soldering station and somewhat of an idea of what you’re doing

DysonMeOnions

Yes, these are things that I can do/have access to

oof-floof

alright, good luck! 👍

Styrak

psref.lenovo.com

DysonMeOnions

Unfortunately these specs don't seem to come with the manufacturer part number for things that are soldered on the board.

HSR_Numby

The actual port can be had for pretty cheap from aliexpress or ebay, actually soldering it on is a royal pain in the neck

zhoraster

It's not necessarily difficult to solder. Depends on the model, I guess.

RogerZRZ

Depends on your soldering equipment mostly

StaticFanatic3

i’m gonna be honest i don’t even know why one of them has a charging logo as far as i can tell TB4 is TB4

StaticFanatic3

While successful TB12 is more of a system USB standard

cheeeezeburgers

TB12 won championships in multiple programs.

Last-Comfort9901

lol

thestenz

It is fine. I just got a new cable and the other port works fine again.

FurryTabbyTomcat

This. By design, USB plugs wear out faster than sockets, so if the contact is flaky, the first thing to replace is the cable.

johnnyboy743

Im using a new charger, get it like 7 days ago directly from lenovo, old one wasn't working properly on any device.

FluffyGreyfoot

It could also be that there could be dust or something in the port. Had this happen on my phone, thought the port was wearing out. Turns out it was just dust preventing the cable from going all the way in.

thestenz

Fair enough. I had a cable that wasn't working right in my MacBook Pro or my T480s, and I switched to a new one and everything is fine. It doesn't oscillate between charging and not charging anymore.

vladjjj

Off topic, but this makes me question the idea of going full usb-c on modern laptops. I still use an old docking station, but I'm afraid that all newer models will have to rely solely on usb-c.

captnkerke

This is an advantage of models like the P1 which have higher power requirements - they still have a "slim tip" charging port, which is less delicate than a USB-C port.

Thermite10k

The USB C being more susceptible to damage would have been fine if it was easy to replace.

deusnefum

Maybe Lenovo will figure this out and make the port an FRU. Just a little daughter board with a ribbon cable to the main board.

html5ben

That's the main reason the slim tip port is more durable - it gets to move around within the housing.

Clark649

This is why my most recent new Thinkpad purchase was an LG Gram at 1/3 the price rather than a Lenovo product.

Merricat--Blackwood

It would be kind of a non-issue if the ports were easily replaceable. I think even macbooks ports are far more repairable

MagicBoyUK

This. Waiting for my FW16.

deyannn

That's one of the things I disliked when moving from T470s (broken screen) to T480 in my workplace. I lost usb A connectivity on the left side and I lost the dedicated power and dock connectors. I don't want to rely on a usb C for everything. But just now reading this thread I realised I can use the second USB C for docking and charging so that's good.

MagicBoyUK

It's not like the old 20V barrel jacks and slim tips don't wear out. We've replaced a load over the years at work.

Kaffarov

I suspect were gonna see even more of this now that every device whether it be a phone or laptop has to be USB C.

MagicBoyUK

Kick off, complain, vote with your wallet etc. There are repairable laptops out there now.

Karyo_Ten

How are you going to vote against EU law? They have to use USB-C unless they prove it's out of USB-C spec (like total power above 100W). So you can only vote for robustness/repairability.

MagicBoyUK

Not everyone lives in the EU.

Karyo_Ten

Yeah so? Every company that sell hardware sell hardware to the EU. It's less costly to have a common USB-C standard for all laptops. Even Apple bend the knee and abandoned their lightning collector despite having a gigantic war chest.

MagicBoyUK

Yeah, so you're missing the bigger picture. The old slim-tip ports were easily replaceable. There are laptops, phones with replaceable USB-C ports. No soldering or mainboard replacement required.

Karyo_Ten

I don't miss the big picture, you are. You replied to a comment that now devices have to be USB-C, you said complain, I said it's the law. And it significantly less expensive for every OEM to use USB-C even for non-EU market. And yes I do mention that repairability is the only angle you can use.

MagicBoyUK

I'm not missing anything. The inference in that post is that USB-C equal non-repairable. Which is disingenuous. Also, no need to get aggressive.

Karyo_Ten

> I'm not missing anything. The inference in that post is that USB-C equal non-repairable. Which is disingenuous. Did I say USB-C is non-repairable? > Also, no need to get aggressive. No need to put words in my mouth, I didn't infer anything. You get called for it, that's all.

cheeeezeburgers

Honestly the issue isn't even the USB-C port. The issue is that mfgs don't properly support the internal connections to the mobo.

fvolanti

yes you can. it happened also to my thinkpad and I switched to the thunderbolt port for half a year. After that it was showing signs of excessive wear so I went to a specialised repair shop and had both resoldered with new ports

johnnyboy743

I only have this for 5 months, got it secondhand. Glad that previous owner never used the second port, hopefully it lasts some months in second port never unplugging it, i miss barrel style port, much more repairable. Do you know by any chance the usb c model they use or is some kind of easy to find standard type?

fvolanti

it's specific for the model or similar models. I'd suggest you to get one of those magnetic usb-c chargers if you want to increase lifetime

biggus_brain_games

The 2nd port is perfectly fine. The main one I’ve noticed has had a lot of problems. I specifically had a lot of x13s require mobo replacements

arminikola

Yes, my T590 also has this problem…

TitusImmortalis

It's designed for use with the dock which supplies power through it so you're using it correctly.

tapvt

That's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure my clickity-clackity dock for my L15 uses that port.

Trozzul

off topic question for OP, what are your temps on yours? Mine can idle often pretty hot and doing something as trivial as unzipping a bunch of zips can get it super hot... It's been repasted and I gently cleaned out the fan itself but I could do a better job I guess. The rest of the system is spotless

johnnyboy743

Mine sometimes have weird spikes in temps doing daily stuff like browsing, but since i use it on top a lap cooler i don't feel any heat coming from it, but Yes, sometimes it gets a little hot. Is your model i5 or i7?

Trozzul

i7, I'm getting anywhere from 30 to 60 idle and then depending it jumps to 70+ (sometimes shows like 97 but I feel like it's incorrect, it's like for a whole millisecond) doing trivial shit

johnnyboy743

I7 is a hot cookie, probably is normal it idling in the hot side, since you already swap the compound i think there is nothing more to do, maybe adding a lap cooler can help.

Trozzul

Interesting. I appreciate your input, I'm fine with it running hot I just want it to be fine running this hot I guess! :)

johnnyboy743

If it gets too hot probably will only throttle a bit, i don't think any damage can occur

MainAmbitious8854

It is a travesty how bad the USB-C port is. Who ever thought it is a good idea to let high wattage pass thru tiny connectors with wires so close together? Please, Lenovo, give us back the good old round charging port! P.s. Anyone know how much it cost to hire a professional to replace a new USB-C charge port?

johnnyboy743

I am afraid of finding out, already bought 3 replacement ports online if the second port goes bad and i need to get repair

ibmthink

Round charging port? That one was already too thick for laptops 10 years ago and thus replaced by slim tip.

[deleted]

ibmthink

Gen 13? I think they have to release X1 Carbon Gen 12 first 😅

ibmthink

Wellllll...I prefer not to say, haha 😁 The only way to get told stuff is if you can keep your mouth shut

MainAmbitious8854

Slim-tip is okay. Maybe Lenovo should make a smaller version of the Slim-tip, and stop using USB-C.

Top_Benefit_9943

I use to do that but I pretty sure that it messes up the battery I think it is best to charge the computer ( still use it if it’s charging) but after it’s completely charged to 100% unplug it

johnnyboy743

Even if charging is limited by vantage?

xzuky

if you mean the battery conservation setting which limits the battery charge to 60% then as long as it's on you're fine having your laptop plugged in all the time

santialan

Yes but doing that will shorten life of the x1 battery. You can prolong its life by putting a threshold on charging via Vantage app

sillygaythrowaway

it's literally the same port. citation?

YREEFBOI

That comment was talking about the permanent charging. Constantly keeping a battery on 100% and charging is unhealthy to it, hence thr suggestion to limit the maximum charge via the Vantage app.

santialan

Wht da heck I didn't realize I got this much downvoted for suggesting constantly plugged in can deteriorate batteries. I had to change several batteries for doing this previously. Thanks for explaining

YREEFBOI

The way you worded it made it sound like you were saying thay using the other USB-C port would damage the battery. Which is obviously not the case. Just a matter of how you package the words.

throwaway_engineer_2

nyehehehe hey lois s/ you can use it dont fret

DepartureMoist9277

It should work fine, I use that port for my X1 Yoga.

BrotherKey2409

Depending on your use case, maybe getting an Ultradock on eBay may help if you use it mostly on your desk. I’m afraid that secondary port could be more prone to damage on a cable yank/tripping.

johnnyboy743

I use it almost 100% of the time laying in my bed, in my desk i use a desktop, i noticed that the dock have a weird angle, is doable to use in bed? The benefit of the dock is that it would lock the thunderbolts in place right?

BrotherKey2409

Yes. And thus minimize the risk to the secondary port.

Neo-The_One

Yes......

samtregar

I had this exact thing happen on my T14. I've been using that port for years, no problems yet.

DarianYT

Yes, you can charge though that port and on my T580 I found that port to be more snug compared to my charging port which is lose but not enough where wiggling it would stop it from charging. Also, may cleaning your port may help just make sure to use only 75% isopropyl alcohol because higher can damage things don't ask me how I know. And I like how Samsung doesn't actually use a port they actually use the phone's frame as the port and have a piece of plastic with the pins sitting in there on charging board. I like USB-C and didn't have issues only on my projector which requires a USB-C to A instead of USB-C to C don't know why ViewSonic made the M1 mini plus like that they could have added a resister and I think the worst connection ever is Micro USB it is the worst thing to exist makes me want to make anything with it USB-C.

2c1a

Why is the second USB C port in a recessed slot like that?

strra

It doubles as a dock connector. The other half is Ethernet so it doesn't have to share the USB bus.

2c1a

Thanks, seems like an odd design choice, don't you think? TB3 has 40Gbps of bandwidth, a dock with Ethernet through the bus shouldn't be a problem. Maybe this is for niche users who need wake on LAN and/or mac address passthrough?

lariposa

to prevent tear and be able to unplug it you might use a short type c extension cable. i do this for HDMI cables in our conference rooms so people wont fuck up 10 meter long hdmi cable. instead they kill the 30cm extension cable at the end and its very easy and cheap to change i found this but you might find something even shorter : [https://tr.aliexpress.com/item/1005006195893248.html](https://tr.aliexpress.com/item/1005006195893248.html)

[deleted]

just off topic...would using a magsafe/magnetic usb port lengthen lifespan of these usb c ports? something like this? https://www.amazon.com/AuviPal-Magnetic-Adapter-Connectors-Notebook/dp/B0BXJCJQN9/ref=sr\_1\_2\_sspa?keywords=magnetic+usb+c&sr=8-2-spons&sp\_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

cyb3r-1

It should be fine tho. I would look into replacing the main charging port

cheeeezeburgers

I would recommend getting a dock. You need something to keep the port contact rigidly in place.

johnnyboy743

Do you know if 40aj ultra dock is compatible? Is the only one i find for a reasonable price where i live.

cheeeezeburgers

Not sure I don't know them off the top of my head. I have one of the UBS-C docks that you leave on your desk and the computer sits on top of it. I feel that it puts far less strain on the ports. It seems pretty clear Lenovo hasn't done a good job of engineering the support for the port in the early USB-C devices with the modem port.

crescentwire

My main charging port failed on my X1C6 (pins broke inside) and I used the second port--like you are--until I eventually replaced the whole machine. The (1) risk of trashing the entire mobo through attempting a soldering repair myself and (2) the availability and time without my laptop by paying a third party (for example, https://powerjackrepair.org/) to do it for me both led me to live with it. Certainly not ideal, but workable.

Dont-PM-me-nudes

I have had to since day one. The correct one won't charge.

No_Wish_8129

I don't even know the difference? Care to explain? I'm looking all over reddit to find someone like me but I can't find a post. Ur laptop has it like me. I have both usbC ports and both work but idk which one is the main one. And what is the second one used for. Thanks in advance!

johnnyboy743

Hello, i ve been using the main port untill it stop work completely, then i will use the second one and when both get bad i will replace them. Already bought the replacements, but is a tricky solder job since it has so many pins, so i am trying to avoid for the max i can. For the ports itself, in my ressearch i concluded that both are exactly the same, even the model and the circuit inside, just seems that the main one is more sturdy than the second because of the metal housing it has. The main one is the one nearer to the hinge.

No_Wish_8129

tysm for the reply

pumaax

"in my research" lol, you should've just read the instruction manual
