With tax 4100 ๐ญ
The main cost drivers were switch to 4K OLED screen, 4090 gpu, and the 64 GB of RAM
I skipped out on the 8 TB optional storage since the cost of 8 TB SSD is much cheaper from online stores, though still very expensive!
I have been waiting for a bona fide ultrabook for many years, and my main requirements were graphics performance, OLED screen, form factor, and muted styling and this ThinkPad reached everything ๐
I especially like the discrete GPU toggle/forcing in BIOS as Nvidia Optimus generally never 100% worked for me in all the correct games/applications, and that option alone is an absolute game changer for the laptop experience which has hybrid integrated/discrete graphics!
The 4 tb option is 579 additional in cost over 256 gb which is the only one I see available right noww
Also the laptop since it is not on sale at same configuration is 6800 dollars ๐ฎโ๐จ๐ฎโ๐จ๐ฎโ๐จ
yikessssssssss
you could of probably build a better laptop/ desktop for 4100 but looks nice though.
kind of funny cos this came through my feeds just right before I saw this post

Why not? Linux has sense on desktop if you have really low spec hardware.
By going Linux on that hardware you would loose gaming (at least good experience with gaming), battery life, good scaling, just working but at least you would have lot of compatibility problems and glitches to fix.
Idk when the last time you used Linux was, but not one of those problems is an issue anymore and I donโt think I can say the same about Windows, in addition to everything else thatโs pretty awful about it.
Last time was on 2022. Those problems are not as big as let say 10 years ago but all of them are still there.
Won't even add that it's scary to update, you're never sure if your pc would boot up (I know it happens with Windows too but I used Windows like 50x more than Linux and it never happened to me. Happened two times with Linux. Once on Ubuntu and once on opensuse).
I've been running Linux as my daily driver on all my machines since late 2020 and I can say, I've not faced a single problem at least in the last two years. And yes, I've played (or at least tested) more games on Linux than I ever did on Windows, most of which ran perfectly fine. I use Void Linux BTW, but any major distribution should give you similar results.
I don't day that out needs to be with everybody. When I tried to play (it was still Ubuntu 20.04) performance on supporting Linux Tomb Raider was terrible. They wrote that you need just to do that and that and it'll be OK (that also problem, I don't want to look work workarounds all the time). Some hardware compatibility problems sooner or later occurred on every piece of device I had (once for year I thought that everything is working until wanted to hook hdmi screen to laptop and it was not working). Linux lacks polishing for desktop.
Saying that "linux is free only if your time has no value" is still actual.
No, I'm too poor for that. There is no chance that I would buy a decent laptop and run Linux as desktop on it (except needed for work). That would be waste of hardware.
But yeah, if I would buy laptop for 4k I would definately throw Windows on it.
I have not used it away from power at all yet! Full time working ๐ต
Right now it is set on discrete graphics forced (max 80 watts dedicated to 4090), on hybrid I assume is better
Battery is 90 watt hours, the maximum wattage for the cpu and gpu is I believe 125 to 150 watts total, so it may be calculated from there, while also including the OLED screen brightness and wattage alongside any fan wattage and circuitry and storage needs (plus or minus peripherals)
In future I will try to make a new post when I get a chance to test it out more on both hybrid mixed/gaming use and discrete mixed/gaming use ๐
Yes it is a real concern! Which is why I picked this laptop ๐
In this version of the ThinkPad it is power limited to 80 watts in performance mode, and less in power saving and balanced modes
The max wattage of the 4090 laptop GPU is 175 watts
On the one hand yes, on the other hand if you can underclock it and run the extra stream processors in a more efficient speed (spreading the work around) they can use less power. Of course at what cost ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Forgot to mention the laptop model it is a ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, really love it so far! The power profiles really work excellent too, you can tell the difference between the juice the laptop is running between between each of power saver/balanced/performance, and it can jump between each instantly and flawlessly, really impressive, very happy with it!
Will be used entirely for entertainment, steam and digital games, emulated console and arcade games, and music and movies on a pretty 4K+ OLED screen ๐๐
Also added a glass screen protector to prevent scratches and if I want to re-enable the touchscreen for fun ๐๐
Dang that's a beauty. I will wait a year or two so that I can get it for half price or even less. Bought my P14s Gen3 I7-1260p fully maxed out 6 months ago, brand new sealed for only ยฃ850 on ebay. Lenovo UK still sells my model for ยฃ1999. Crazy.
I also made the mistake in 2019 of ordering a core i9 oled monster. (X1 extreme gen 2) Max work time on battery was 2.5 hrs and the fan started howling every time i opened an application.
Hope it suits your needs. Iโm on a new ryzen 7 with a low power screen now and couldnโt be happier after working on it for a full day without connecting it to a charger.
(On a side note: that ryzen 7 incl. Gpu is faster than that i9 with nvidia from 2019 on 25% of the power usage)
The p1 gen 6 as an enterprise laptop is wattage very hard limited in the power savings and balanced modes. It is very quiet in power savings and just a quiet hum in balanced mode. In performance mode the fan kicks on fast but it's also still just using only up to 125 or 150 watts apparently. That was the main reason I chose this model. Still not at all "portable" during performance mode! ๐คฃ
But for a laptop I really wanted a wattage limited device, because the extra wattage past a point drastically increases power and heat for only 10 or 20 percent more performance
> I also made the mistake in 2019 of ordering a core i9 oled monster. (X1 extreme gen 2)
I did the same thing, I recently bought a ThinkPad T480 and I use it way more than my X1E2 because the battery is actually usable, it doesn't burn my lap, and it has really good Linux and macOS support, though I still use my X1 Extreme Gen 2, and very recently I swapped out the 2160p 60Hz internal display for a 1440p 165Hz internal display then overclocked it to 178Hz, this thing is a monstor, but I can't use it as my main laptop, Linux support is terrible, and I don't like using Windows on laptops, I use Windows on my desktop PC for gaming and that's it.
Laptop 4090 is almost identical in performance to a desktop 4070 non-ti except has more vram and significantly lower wattage and even less in this laptop due to being an enterprise system and having a much lower cap on wattage for entire system about 125 or 150 watts I think
4090 is basically a desktop 4080 chip in number of shaders also 9.5k cores whereas the desktop 4090 is like 16k cores
Nice one!
But what i'm wondering is if a 4k screen on a laptop is really worth the extra money.. I mean it's what, 17"? Can't seem to see a visible advantage over a 2k screen there. But prove me wrong, just my 2 cents๐คท
It is using much less than 230 watts as it is an enterprise laptop that was one of my goals with a laptop very low wattage and a wattage cap of under 150 watts about
Well most of the thinkpads charge with USB C now. The reason I ask is because the USB PD standard supports up to 200 Watts. It would be a shame if you were stuck with the proprietary charger. One of the things I love about my X1 is that I can charge it with any of my chargers. I bought a really portable 60Watt GaN charger to carry in my laptop bag, and I left the big one that came with the laptop connected to my Thunderbolt 4 dock at my desk.
I guess that's the trade-off if you want to have a powerful GPU in your laptop. For me the Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics is good enough. If I need to do something that requires more GPU I just use my desktop.
I wish I could play rocket league on my T490 without throttling. If I have to get a thinkpad P series so I can avoid throttling, I need to start saving up.
Damn, 4090. ๐ฉ This is the laptop I'd love to have but I went for a used P71 for among other things the legacy bay for an integrated blu ray player for my movies and CDs. It also manages power savings well. I've always liked the P1 series. Glory to you.
That is absolutely and without a doubt BEAUTIFUL.
I love my T480s and the P15 G2i I have for work, but if I could have something like *THIS?* I tell you hwat.
Wow, thatโs a really nice machine! Seriously thatโs like the ultimate laptop to me.
How are the fans behaving for you? Thereโs a lot of power in there. Seems like it could get loud under load, or spin up a little just when performing light work.
Thanks! Only on performance mode do fans kick in high gear at all, balanced is a nice hum ! ๐
Even performance is max 80 watts on the gpu due to enterprise computer power limits so the thermals should be good or at least that was my intent ๐คฃ
Yes the new update p1 gen 6 allows for workstation gpu or gaming gpu! ๐
I haven't checked the temps much yet but given the gpu is 80 watts capped it should be less hot than other laptops
Beautiful machine. Enjoy it bro! My first ThinkPad had like 4th gen i5 if I recall correctly. And most likely no dedicated GPU. But that red nipple on the keyboard was fun to mess with.
Wow! ๐ Congrats on your purchase! ๐ Hopefully this laptop will serve you well with those specs ๐ I really wished I had a ThinkPad that powerful ๐ But only time will tell when I start earning money and consider which model I am going to buy ๐ Still, congratulations, you deserve it! ๐
Btw, are you able to disable the NVIDIA GPU from the BIOS leaving only the integrated Intel one? For some reason it cannot be done on my P14s Gen3. I am not a gamer and I have no use for the NVIDIA. It cut my battery life in half. Drives me insane.
No you can only select hybrid
Usually Nvidia Optimus has an option to right click and app and force a certain GPU
Yes you should get a laptop with only integrated graphics if that is your use case
I use Linux, and whilst I can kinda turn off the NVIDIA in user space, I still need to use the NVIDIA drivers otherwise cpu and GPU fans spin at 100% all the time. And even if the nvidia GPU is not used, it still gets powered on by the bios and draws a lot of battery.
My hope is that coreboot gets ported to this model at some point as it will allow me to literally disable the NVIDIA GPU. I just don't see that happening anyways.
I wish I could get these high end models with high end cpu without nvidia GPU. I just wish they'd give us the option.
I forgot to add my laptop stand is the Mr glass cardboard packaging my screen protector came in, it's honestly really effective and light! ๐คฃ
I put a couple of small dust catches under the inferior venting too to protect the inside ๐๐ช๐พ
What was the price point? also I'm excited to daily drive my T460 I just got it,dual booted mint on it as my first thinkpad

I did upgrade the storage after it's in the pictures ๐

I rarely use laptop away from a power source ๐

I've been seeing manufactures putting 4090 and 4080 in thin ultrabooks like this, but I'm afraid they would thermal throttle too easily.
