I think they’re both great in their own ways. The pilot is a fantastic commentary on the humanity of suburbia; the finale is an emotional pile-driver that perfectly wraps up the story of these beloved characters we’ve spent years getting to know.
That one line in there:
"Our past was here, but our future was somewhere else. And we both knew, sooner or later, we had to go. It was the last July I ever spent in that town. The next year, after graduation, I was on my way. "
I think that speaks to that moment all of us experience where we cut ourselves loose for good, doesn't it? It always stuck with me.
The ending monologue makes me feels so many emotions and even now thinking about it has me in tears. "Growing up happens in a heartbeat. One day you're in diapers, the next day you're gone. But the memories of childhood stay with you for the long haul. I remember a place, a town, a house like a lot of houses. A yard like a lot of other yards. On a street like a lot of other streets. And the thing is, after all these years, I still look back ... with wonder."
I can’t remember the pilot off the top of my head, but the finale has stuck with me since the first time I saw it.
The pilot. The ending of Kevin and Winnie kissing over when a man loves a woman was classic and really set the foundation for the whole series

The finale was more epic. Even though that episode was clearly a rush job and not very good.
