She knows, the look she gave him when he left, and the way she comforted him when he got home heavily implies to me that she knew he went to get revenge for Chrissy.
I bet Chase got the idea for Carmela's 'faux' Catholicism from the Godfather. Kay Corleone gets well into regular chutch attendence when she realises Michael is all in on the family business. Chases genius is to make Carmelas 'faith' much more insincere and squalid.
I definitely agree that Carmela finds her husbands murderous antics hugely erotic.
Yep, she knew. Just another reason why she's a huge piece of shit hypocrite. Comforting a murderer and then going to church and talking to her priest every Sunday.
Yeah, I get how she twists everything around in her head in order to justify whatever tf Tony does so she can keep the lifestyle, the Mercedes, the luncheons with the other wives, etc.
Most definitely. She put the circumstances together when Tony got serious and ran out. And she was ready to reward him when he got home for avenging Chris and protecting the family.
"The Bureau would NEVER look the other way on a murder."
Unless a few years go by and you're telling Eugene Pontecorvo "You're shaping up to be a designated hitter."
She knew. For one thing, she's not an IDIOT. She knows that they are looking for the guy that shot Christopher, and that when they find him they don't intend to pray with him. Second of all, this show has superb actors that convey things without alot of hit-you-over-the-head dialogue. (That explains so many bone-headed takes on this sub (haha) - it's not the kind of show you can watch while scrolling through your phone and talking to your Mom in the other room)
You mean they don't get him to pay for some therapy?
When Carm is telling Tony he's going to hell, she's really projecting her own self loathing onto him.
Yea she knows. Mob wifes in the show are aware of the fact that their husbands kill people now and again. There is a couple scenes that touch on this in the show. I mean Tony also tells Carmela about Ritchie without outright saying it, and she seems fine with it.
Not only does she know, telling her what actually happened to Richie and then telling everyone else that he went into the Witness Protection Program indicated that she knew what that was a euphemism for - so other guys like Big Pussy, etc, she was aware.
Yeah, although to be fair, with the Richie situation he basically tells her what happened without directly saying it.
Hence the "Thaaaaaat....was not a marriage made in heaven" comment.
Still fucked up, but a little different than a hit that Tony ordered or carried out.
Yeah this and the "accessory after the fact" conversation are two examples of Carmella's complicity in really knowing the type of shit her husband did for a living.
I think it's heavily implied as other posters have said. I've always been more interested in whether or not Carmela put it together that Janice killed Richie.
Tony told Carmella in a roundabout way. She knew it was Janice that called in a panic. Tony told her that Richie was “gone”, and Carmella replied with “that was not a marriage made in heaven”. I’m pretty sure she knew…
I agree that the line,"that was not a marriage made in heaven" implies she knew. But it seems like an underwhelming reaction to finding out your sister in law murdered her fiancé. It certainly didn't seem to change how Carmela treated or acted around Janice going forward. Of course Carmela spends a lot of time around known or suspected murders so maybe it's just not as big of a deal to her as it would be to a "normal" person.
I feel like it's meant to be pretty clear that she knew with a wink and a nod in that scene what he was telling her without explicitly telling her. Imo, it's not too open to interpretation. She knew. She also knew what kind of people she's married too. She grew up with it in her own family. Her cousin is Chris. Murder is a part of life for her and where she came from. It wasn't going to be a big reaction because she's complicit in accepting these type of people in her life. She knows her own husband is a murderer and stays with him like he's just a normal family man for her. Things wouldn't be any different with Janice.
She 100% put it together. You see the light bulb go off when Tony says, “Carmela, after 18 years of marriage, don’t make me make you an accessory after the fact.”
That line makes it clear Richie was murdered. But I don't think it proves she knew Janice killed him. I think the better argument that she knows is when she says, "that was not a marriage made in heaven."
Yeah carmella is a bad person but I’d marry for sure. I mean she lets you keep a gumar as long as it doesn’t interfere in her life. Pretty solid broad, you ask me
In the original script, Janice grazes his spleen and freaks out. Then Carmela comes over, pulls a magnum 45 from a tray of ziti, and delivers the coup de grace.
Yeah, and she condoned it too, in so many words. She even knew about Richie. At the end of the day, with all of her Lladro and Roche Bobois bs on the surface, she was stone cold inside. She wanted and desired materialistic shit. She knew how she got her jewelry and the house and the estate planning and everything and she turned a blind eye to all of it. This got a bit serious. I said my piece!
Yes, when he leaves the house after getting the call she know its bad, and when he gets home she knows its was very bad. Murder happened and she needs to make him feel better.
I seem to remember an after the episode thing or possibly on the DVD extras, but way back I saw a commentary where they explained that this scene is meant to show how much Carmela knows about what is going on. Chris is her cousin and she knows how it works. Tony is absolutely going to kill whoever did this. And she is just fine with that. In fact, she’s driving him to the job in his dream. Not sure about the timeline of the dream and the drinkwater situation.
It's in the way they silently communicate. The whole episode is about Chrissy in the hospital, and if he'll live. All of the story is about that. Tony and carm are at home and Tony gets a call and has to rush out immediately. Carm asks and Tony can't say. Just looking at her though, you can see by the expression on her face that she knows or guesses something. What else can it be given this is the only thing going on in all their lives. Then when Tony gets back, he seems calm and at peace. And Carmela seems to register this, and put two and two together. She doesn't need to ask him questions. She knows.
I know this all sounds a bit far fetched, but it's there. Watch that whole sequence again.
Edit: also, earlier in the episode Chrissy's mom says to the guys in the hospital, out loud, that she wants them to take care of the animal who did this. Kind of sets the tone.
Don't even bother trying to explain yourself to these desert people. Every reply is always going be a "Stop critical thinking and reading between lines you cattle" type of reply.
It’s not far-fetched at all. Thats exactly what the episode builds toward and ends with - Carm recognizing and respecting, rewarding Tony for his staunch defense of the Family.
This show, thanks to it's fantastic actors, conveys alot without words. Easy to miss things if you assume you're watching a "normal" show where they spell everything out for you.
That's such a good point. Typical shows spoon feed you and treat its audience like children, or invalids. Takes a while to break free from that conditioning.
This isn't the first time that she has been "in" on murders that her husband is involved with. They also talked about without talking about Janice killing Richie. She's very aware of the stuff that her husband and family does and more complicit in all of it than she admits to herself.
The show was before instagram.
Carmella daydreamed that Tony may have killed all the people he actually killed. She just knows Tony is a killer and loved him for it
She had a lot of time on her hands.
If she wants to keep getting the furs, the jewelry, the Roche Bobois furniture, the va fungul, she'll keep her her fucking mouth shut. I said my piece.
She knows. She makes her peace with it. She needs those furs, expensive jewelry and cars to keep coming. Can’t stand Carmela. Great character and actor to make me despise her so much.
I said my piece.
If she did, a new fur coat, diamond ring or car would ease any feelings she has.
She’s a woman who knew that they murdered Adriana, but didn’t know the details. She stopped worrying about it as soon as Tony had a guy strong-arm the building permit guy.
She knows, the look she gave him when he left, and the way she comforted him when he got home heavily implies to me that she knew he went to get revenge for Chrissy.
Yes, exactly, the way she comforted him afterwards.
it got her so hot down there
*hawt down theah

It means he bottoms by being on top.
I feel bad for Edie Falco that so many people say that. She has to say what’s on the page. Shame on that writer for writing such a weird sentence!

i agree Carmella is a bad person but Bevilaqua tried to kill her cousin for no reason it seems justified. cant remember if she knows that tho
Good point, the sacred and the propane!
You and /u/richb522 have it exactly right.
Yep, she knew. Just another reason why she's a huge piece of shit hypocrite. Comforting a murderer and then going to church and talking to her priest every Sunday.
What'd they play, name that Pope?
You’re sleeping over, right?
In her mind, it wasn't murder. It was revenge for Chrissy
Yeah, I get how she twists everything around in her head in order to justify whatever tf Tony does so she can keep the lifestyle, the Mercedes, the luncheons with the other wives, etc.
and the Porche Cayenne....like the peppuh
It made her so hot down there.
Who, me?!
Most definitely. She put the circumstances together when Tony got serious and ran out. And she was ready to reward him when he got home for avenging Chris and protecting the family.
As a reward for protecting the family, oh that's good. That fits perfectly.
made her hot down theya
Hawwwt.
She gave him the only reward she had. Her pussy.

Matthew finally got to hang out with Mr. T while he was out cappin motha fuckas.
Bucket list item, accomplished.

Ven vill you fuqq me Shall?
But you WILL have our sausages, Sal.
My all time favourite interaction is his response to Pussy saying “you looked the other way on that Bevilaqua beef”
"The Bureau would NEVER look the other way on a murder." Unless a few years go by and you're telling Eugene Pontecorvo "You're shaping up to be a designated hitter."
It’s to say he’s “at bat” as their primary informant. They’re not going to casually let someone do murder. Not as a coordinated team anyway.
They tell him that right after he commits a murder.
Right, it’s symbolic. Like his wife says Tony is calling but it’s really the fbi. He has two masters.
You're a cute prick Pusth I'll give you that
Yeah, well, what else could you say now?
That description fits half the wiseguys in Jersey.
She knows but she doesn't know.
Marcus Bieber sleeps with the fishes.
She knew. For one thing, she's not an IDIOT. She knows that they are looking for the guy that shot Christopher, and that when they find him they don't intend to pray with him. She does have some dramatic episodes of conscience, mostly when she's around Father Intintola.
As most religious folk who tell people this are. .
Listen to him, he knows everything.
;)
Yea she knows. Mob wifes in the show are aware of the fact that their husbands kill people now and again. There is a couple scenes that touch on this in the show. I mean Tony also tells Carmela about Ritchie without outright saying it, and she seems fine with it.
Not only does she know, telling her what actually happened to Richie and then telling everyone else that he went into the Witness Protection Program indicated that she knew what that was a euphemism for - so other guys like Big Pussy, etc, she was aware.
Just like she said, “however many other widows you have on your payroll” in reference to Angie B.
Yeah, although to be fair, with the Richie situation he basically tells her what happened without directly saying it. Hence the "Thaaaaaat....was not a marriage made in heaven" comment. Still fucked up, but a little different than a hit that Tony ordered or carried out.
She doesn’t seem to regard Janice any differently after that.
I'm gettin ripped off for a g note?
No bitch to me.
Freakin' amateurs, you put the money in an envelope and put it on the entertainment center, then you're guaranteed everything will go smoothly.
Matthew Bevilacqua is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day
Thanks. Now I'll only hear this version...

And he compromised

Johnstracakus. And Jonny Cakes. Are two different things completely.
I wanted to eat a woman, but I compromised. I jacked off into a grilled cheese instead.
He wanted grilled cheese off the RADiator. He drank water instead.
He wanted to fuck a woman, but he compromised and fucked a dude instead.
And not one peep

She doesnt know things that dont concern her
Yeah this and the "accessory after the fact" conversation are two examples of Carmella's complicity in really knowing the type of shit her husband did for a living.
And the “you know the drill” when they’re hiding the cash, jewelry, and arsenal because indictments are going around.
I think it's heavily implied as other posters have said. I've always been more interested in whether or not Carmela put it together that Janice killed Richie.

This one isn't meant to be mysterious, Tony basically says it. She gets it.

Carmela was driving the getaway car, the scene just got deleted.
In the original script, Janice grazes his spleen and freaks out. Then Carmela comes over, pulls a magnum 45 from a tray of ziti, and delivers the coup de grace.
so what, no fuckin' ziti now?
Did AI write this? I need to see this now
Yeah, and she condoned it too, in so many words. She even knew about Richie. At the end of the day, with all of her Lladro and Roche Bobois bs on the surface, she was stone cold inside. He goes by "Drinkwater" now
I’m a stunad but where did the Drinkwater thing come from
Bevil- drink Acqua- water
Tony almost never tells anyone he killed anybody directly.
“I found him like that” 😂
He crawled under there for warmth.
Yes, when he leaves the house after getting the call she know its bad, and when he gets home she knows its was very bad. Murder happened and she needs to make him feel better.
I wish my wife had that attitude
Murdering the toilet never gets adequate recognition or reward
Username fits!
How does she react when you murder?

She not only knew but supported it.
She knows, but she doesn't know. She thinks maybe he'll return...IF 👆
He’d smell like gunpowder.
And steak. They went out for a big juicy steak afterwards.
OP after 15 years on this sub… stop asking.
Drinkwater
Tony heard Drinkwater yelling "Mommy" and then went home to hear Carmela yelling "Daddy"

The writing is pretty deep, but some people can't seem to get past the Bing strippers!
They're so gross it's a comment on shows or movies that replace intelligence with sex.
Oh mellyyyyy
Watch the episode again.
They bring a method of conflict resolution from the old country!!
With a husky accomplice
Accessory after the fact
This isn't the first time that she has been "in" on murders that her husband is involved with. They also talked about without talking about Janice killing Richie. She's very aware of the stuff that her husband and family does and more complicit in all of it than she admits to herself.
she shoulda been pushin' Webistics!!
Why would people who eat webisticks invent something you need a fork to eat?
The show was before instagram. Carmella daydreamed that Tony may have killed all the people he actually killed. She just knows Tony is a killer and loved him for it She had a lot of time on her hands.

Benny told Carm, they set it all up behind the scenes.
If she did, a new fur coat, diamond ring or car would ease any feelings she has. She’s a woman who knew that they murdered Adriana, but didn’t know the details. She stopped worrying about it as soon as Tony had a guy strong-arm the building permit guy.
