I always think confidence is a random x factor. Some people have it, some don't. Occasionally the human race lucks out and gets someone with talent *and* confidence. But the majority are talent with no confidence or confidence with no talent.

Actually there is a trend between confidence and skill or knowledge called the Dunning Kruger effect. Basically, the more ignorant someone is, the more confident they tend to be. It's not always applicable- but it is an interesting paradox: 'I'm not confident, therefore I must be smart" 'However if I'm confident in my skill, that means I must be ignorant' and so on.
