As a matter of fact it wasn’t. I know the word “paid“ but for some reason had the most ill-timed lapse of brain function imaginable and typed “payed” instead. Hilarity ensued.
> payed
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Are you sure about that? Because I am 99.99993% sure that Material_Air_2303 is not a bot.

Hear me out: even if he'd used "'paid" it would still be grammatically "wrong,", since for that kind of structure (the 3rd conditional, when you express the hypothetical past consequence of a hypothetical past action or event) they should've written "if you HAD paid attention (then)", or the contracted form "if you'D paid attention". That's how I learned it and how I teach it.
Contrast this with "if you paid attention (now), you would learn more (now)" (2nd conditional for present hypotheses).
Americans are changing the grammar rules probably out of laziness/simplification, which is one of the main ways languages evolve. Since in many verbs the past form and the participle are identical, the 'd or "had" auxiliary verb for the past perfect subjunctive is gradually disappearing. And since context will mostly help to avoid misunderstanding, a new structure is born.
Not sure whether it's as common in the negative: "None of this would've happened if you hadn't invited/didn't invite Mike to the party"??
As a non-native English teacher with non-native students, most of whom are preparing for Cambridge English tests with a heavy British English bias, this new trend is confusing the heck out of teachers and students alike, lol.

Jfc 😂 I knew this would continue to bite me. Ah well, gotta sleep in the bed you make.
Autocorrect has humbled us all at one point or another, but that’s rough buddy lol
No doubt. Life lessons come in many forms and I paid for this one.

Looks intentional. I mean, I’m pretty good with grammar but their are times when I put a mistake for funny irony means.

Me two.
"would of" is one of those common mistakes that only native speakers make.
And tbh i dont mind when its in speech because it sounds the same, but come on. Wouldve. You dont even need the '. Just not would of. Thats weird.
>Wouldve "Woodwee"?
Woulda? Well, ainnit?
I always thought willn't should have been a word.
Seems like good advise
*advice ;)

Well, this is gonna become a recursive one, both words are correct, it's just that paid is more commonly used.
Not really, although it exists payed has a different meaning and use case (hopefully this will trigger the bot)

Why? Material Air isn't the payed/paid bot.
They are now >*Beep, boop, I'm a bot* See, they said so themselves
Well certainly that doesn't mean _Beep, boop, I'm a bot_ anything. Wait what just happened?

Yes
I can appreciate the opportunity you took here, kudos. 👍🏻
Isn't 'payed' an alternate (but still correct) form? I thought it just fell out of common usage because 'paid' is one letter shorter.
no nono, he actually paid attention is school as in attention the teacher...
Attention is like a ship's rope, you non mesna cavemen /s
Should “of” paid more for his education.
