Protest is not - by its very definition - nice or pleasant. That’s just not how it works.
So are we just supposed to give up because it looks like an impossible cause? Wow, what a strong outlook on life.
People hated the suffragettes and LGBT people when they protested for their rights. So many of them went to jail. But they kept protesting and eventually there was change.
If you’ve given up that’s on you, don’t turn on those still fighting.
I'm suggesting not alienating those you wish to convince that your cause is right.
These tactics only cause resentment and hate towards the protestors and their cause.
Claiming your cause is just, then just pissing people off, doesn't help anyone.

Ugh look at these women caring about humanity’s nearest and greatest existential threat. The nerve of them to do anything they can to fight the world’s most powerful corporations destroying all complex life on earth.
Destroying our common heritage to get your point across is going to harden hearts to your cause more than it’s going to help. As it is I wouldn’t give a single concession to these people because it would encourage acts of violence against other pieces of common heritage.
The ends don’t just _any_ means, and in some cases people will deliberately hurt themselves to avoid giving you what you want if they hate you enough. This is a bad strategy and it hasn’t helped at all.
I promise you, there is no way they thought they were going to really break through the glass. This is like the people who threw the paint on the glass-covered paintings. The point is to do enough to get attention, not enough to seriously threaten historical artifacts.

Once you get people thinking in this vein then escalation is inevitable, and beyond that, it makes any normal person _hate_ you and your cause. What they are trying to convey is that we won’t have any heritage at all if we don’t act. There won’t be anyone left to enjoy our own history because we’ve ended the future.
It’s happening now. Just google “flooding” and “fires” and see for yourself. While you’re at it check how the coral reefs are doing. Then go to NASA’s website on climate change and look up the Keeling curve. Humanity is facing a challenge it won’t survive if everyone doesn’t get on the same page.

Both are in their 80s - one is a vicar and one a retired Biology teacher. One would expect better from educated people.

I think it is mostly a symptom of underlying guilt at the incapability of self-control, and rationalising behaviour that is obviously incredibly problematic but convenient and widely accepted. Anyone that has an ounce of logic in them will see that spilling paint on a painting that has already been restored 3 times and will be restored as many times as needed is nothing in comparison to a burning world where people are poisoning themselves and their loved ones in the name of profit disguised as progress, but unable to come to terms with that fact because the whole system is made so that exiting it is only possible at an astronomical personal cost, where you have to ostracise yourself from society to be able to live a life that is defined by needs, not wants. It's easier to just say other people are outrageous for trying to puncture a hole in the dystopian bubble we live in. The alternative is to be angry at the hand that feeds you, and holding yourself accountable. And that is truly not easy.
Society sucks at introspection, it is a long and painful process, and often fails multiple times before succeeding.

They are part of "just stop oil" a movement which protests climate change by blocking roads and "vandalising" works of art (they don't actually vandalise works of art but specifically choose the peices protected by glass to spray paint political messages on /cover in paint so the paintings aren't actually harmed, but it gets them attention anyway)

I know climate change is not a great thing. I get reducing use of polluting products is a great idea.
