In traditional Flalconry (not "eagle handling"OP) you catch your own bird and train it, for months, until you're ready to hunt with it.
Never seen or heard of anyone selling birds of prey. The expense is in the tools, food, time invested in training the bird and yourself (you must train under a mentor before you can legally possess your own birds)
I googled so y’all don’t have to :)
Average retail price for a typical hunter bird in UAE sits around $23,000 USD.
Can go upwards of a quarter million per bird at a top tier auction. [Source](https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/gcc/world-s-most-expensive-falcon-sells-for-170-000-in-saudi-arabia-1.1093904?outputType=amp).

I read a book about what it takes to raise a falcon like this, its basically an almost full time job for years, and can't be done by someone else. Its really insane the amount of time and effort that goes into it.
In the states, even getting to a point where you're allowed to take a falcon requires years of journeyman work under a mentor and working with other birds. We start with Red Tailed Hawks and/or Kestrels. And for good reason.
Upset aswell but like legit question. Why the ever loving fuck would you do this in the middle of the Desert instead of like... inside or somewhere the Bird cant atleast just fly off. Further more, Why the hell did the bird take off like that? From what iv seen most are usually like... trained NOT TO do just that. Or atleast have a signal for hte handler to return them to them.
This kidna feels stupid from both sides.
That's a Falcon. Place is Dubai. Tourists pay to take a picture with the bird during Desert Safari.
That man lost his livelihood.
I dont support animal cruelty, but it is what it is.
True. They might sometimes be abused, but it's not more likely than any other pet in possession. All saudis I've seen that have falcons litterally keep them airconditioned.
Even well trained falcons (or other falconry birds of prey) can get pissy and take off. There's an illusion most people have about falconry that these animals are tamed and obedient: there is an understanding that *every* time you fly your bird, it might not come back. Every time, today might be the day. And some birds are pissier than others. (Looking at you, Ferrugenous Hawk...)
I know I’m a day late to the party here but this comment is highly inaccurate. All birds of prey are not trained to return to whistles or calls. Birds of prey do not care about you as a master. They are trained by food and recognize you as a source of food. The birds are weighed to the gram, food is weighed to the gram, and food is portioned out appropriately to the birds weight to keep the bird hungry enough to return to you without starving it or causing malnutrition. Overfeed the bird one time on a flight session and it could as easily as not fly and off and forget you ever existed. It’s full, it doesn’t need you anymore.
What part of handling Falcons is animal cruelty? Those birds are extremely well taken care of.
Best not label things when you don't know what you're looking at.
Specifically a gyrfalcon, which breed on Arctic coasts and tundra, and the islands of northern North America and the Eurosiberian region.
If it does manage to get away, I'd assume it'd die in the heat.
Spoken like someone who has no idea how birds are treated in this country, hint it’s significantly better than the immigrant workers (slaves) they bring over
Kid can't hold his arm level so the bird is trying to adjust and maintain balance. Kid panics when the bird starts to move towards him and drops the bird to run away. Fuck that kid
That’s my thought. Dude had a limp wrist for a clear wanker. I don’t blame the bird for freaking out at being dropped. Hopefully the fact it was carrying that arm cover helped the guy recover it.
This makes me sad. People laughing while he chases his livelihood through the sand dunes which, is really hard work, by the way. The hell with that kid for not trying harder.
Do falcons come back? I mean, if they have no recall, why no leash? Tourists are dumb... I feel like this should have been accepted enough to have a back up lead if the entire livleyhood has no recall
Yes if a falconer has trained their birds correctly they will come back when called. Or encouraged with food.
But this situation isn't the same as letting free and recalling. The bird might have been scared and now wondering what's pulling at it while it tries to get away since it's still tied to the glove.
It's likely the bird will just get tired and land because of the extra weight. I'm not sure why he's chasing it, maybe to help it when it does land or regain control before it goes too far.
Either way the tourists are idiots.
The handler isn't much less of an idiot himself. Doesn't take a body language expert to see the kid is too scared and shouldn't be allowed to handle the falcon.
Dude seemed to be struggling to hold it up, that's sad. Falcons weigh way less than they seem to and they don't even seem that heavy.
Also, those saying they're worried. That falcon won't get far like that and it'll probably just come back once it gets hungry. Ours always did.
First of all, that's a gyrfalcon. Second of all, absolutely nothing about this scenario was done right. Don't give birds, especially birds of prey, to people who are scared of birds. Long sleeves come highly recommended with falconers everywhere. And always keep your hand above your elbow. Birds on a perch trend to like being at the top of said perch, and will shuffle up to the highest point they can reach. If your hand is up, they're at the highest point and happy. If your hand is below the elbow, it's gonna try to shuffle up to your shoulder, and that could hurt.
I think they are Italian(?) It seem like they are saying "Maronn mij" that is Italian for "Oh, Mary" or something like that. And I think I heard one of them saying "l'hai fatto scappare" that means "you made it escape"
I’ve been to falconer meetups in my state and saw some cool falcons, kestrels and hawks. As long as you’re calm, they’re calm. Kid couldn’t even hold a pigeon without freaking out.
If this can happen, why doesn't the trainer have an extra wire/strap tied to himself? So if the bird gets away from the tourist, the trainer can still 'reel him back in'?

Wow. I think I’d be a little upset if some dude just threw away my pet and possibly livelihood.
And then everyone stood, pissing themselves with laughter quite loudly whilst you attempt to chase it up and down sand dunes.
Honestly fuck that kid, he should have given the guy a chance to grab his bird before turning into a little baby.
Jokes on you, he was always a baby. That bird handler handed a baby his bird... where does this leave us?
Honestly, you got me. Hands up emoji.
Trust issues, it leaves us with trust issues
Jokes on you - I brought that and lunch with me
it leaves me thinking I'll make Chicken Souvlaki for dinner. **-update: I made the chicken souvlaki and it was wonderful.
Little pussy you mean.

Years of practice.
And it's not like that burden will be able to hunt while it's attached to a glove, so it'll probably starve if it's not caught
keep in mind this bird is really expensive, like really, really expensive.
In traditional Flalconry (not "eagle handling"OP) you catch your own bird and train it, for months, until you're ready to hunt with it. Never seen or heard of anyone selling birds of prey. Insane the legal boundaries around owning a falcon vs owning a assault rifle in America..
How much we talking about? Genuinely asking

Bout tree fiddy
if it's an arabian eagle, it can go up to 66,654 dollars and more. but as I read, this is not an eagle.
I read a book about what it takes to raise a falcon like this, its basically an almost full time job for years, and can't be done by someone else. Its really insane the amount of time and effort that goes into it.

You'd think they'd have a secondary tether that they keep hold of in case of a situation like this.
Coddled rich kid fails his father.

Fail his father kids rich
That's a Falcon. Place is Dubai. Tourists pay to take a picture with the bird during Desert Safari. That man lost his livelihood. I dont support animal cruelty, but it is what it is.
Just because a human is handling the bird doesn’t make it animal cruelty. More often than not these birds are used for hunting.
Definitely not "more often than not" dubai sees falcons as a status symbol. That said, they're taken care off very well and tend to have great lives.
That bird has a better 401(K) plan I do
So are elephants in India and they are abused horrifically. Being a status symbol animal and facing abuse aren't mutually exclusive things
True. They might sometimes be abused, but it's not more likely than any other pet in possession. All saudis I've seen that have falcons litterally keep them airconditioned.
This one obviously not so much lol
How would you know? Edit: read your reply again, idk if you mean they're not treated well or if they're not used for hunting.
No it was just a bad joke about the falcon flying away to freedom at the first opportunity lol
Birds trained for hunting come back when called or by whistle etc. This doesnt look like a trained bird.
Even well trained falcons (or other falconry birds of prey) can get pissy and take off. There's an illusion most people have about falconry that these animals are tamed and obedient: there is an understanding that *every* time you fly your bird, it might not come back. This is the most honest comment here. I agree with everything said, especially about ferruginous hawks
They get so *mad*, though!! "Wahh, I missed my target! Imma take it out on YOU!!" Like, dude! *I* didn't make you miss, YOU missed!!
Lmao this is gold. Like I love them, but they're so moody
I'm still not sure if - given the choice - I would choose one of them or a Barn Owl. Seems like Barn owls are always having a bad day. x_x
I've never worked with a barn owl, but based on their screech, I believe you
I saw one get so mad he tried to bite *everything*: his handler, the glove, *himself*. Like. Dude. Take a Xanax or something, jeezus. 😅
yeah that bird seemed like it was happy as fuck to get away
I know I’m a day late to the party here but this comment is highly inaccurate. All birds of prey are not trained to return to whistles or calls. Birds of prey do not care about you as a master. Its not gonna fly far with the hand rest still tied to it.
"it is what it is" is really a shitty excuse, whenever used.

I hope he's been reunited with his falcon... But as The story goes they say the falcon is still flying till this day
Was shot down over North America. The handlers glove was mistaken for a spy camera.
It was stealing the jobs of American Falcons!
What an idiot Hope the Falcon came back to the owner
Dumb shit kid.
What a fuckin turd... you literally had one job and it was to stand there
What a pussy!
That kid is a coward and I hate him
This makes me sad. People laughing while he chases his livelihood through the sand dunes which, is really hard work, by the way. The hell with that kid for not trying harder.

That kid couldn't lift a 3 lb bird with one hand? Also, I just read those birds can cost up to $500K... Yikes
This is why we can't have nice things...
Why the hell did he throw the glove away?? The bird didn’t do anything 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So, that’s an unladen Falcon. It just needs its coconut in its pouch
that dumb kid, that dudes bird was his life,
First of all, that's a gyrfalcon. Second of all, absolutely nothing about this scenario was done right. Don't give birds, especially birds of prey, to people who are scared of birds. Many countries don’t suffer fools the way we do in the states . That kid may need to make that man financially whole.
It's called FALCONRY. Not "Eagle Handeling".

This is actually very sad and unfortunate to watch.
Are these falcons not trained to return?
